One ace lady Christine Truman MBE is one of the UK’s most successful women’s tennis players, reaching both the semi-finals and final of Wimbledon before the age of twenty. I pop over to her home in Aldeburgh to volley some questions at her. Christine, a tall elegant lady who still has the look of a winner about her, welcomes me warmly and stepping inside, it is evident that tennis is still very much part of her life. A stack of tennis rackets is propped up in the hallway, trophies line up with the cook books in the kitchen and I can hear the tennis on in the background. A cheer goes up as a searing cross court volley wins the point and for a moment she hesitates before taking me through to the conservatory. She 4

comes from a large sporting family and was number five of six children. “In the summer we would fashion a tennis court in the garden and play against one another. It was terribly competitive, but this sibling rivalry held me in good stead later in life as it made me very determined to win.” One year the family spent the summer in Thorpeness and the children were signed up to the local tennis tournaments. “I think I was eleven when I first competed

I am very proud to be President this year as they are celebrating their 125th anniversary.” Christine’s own career as a player took off when her talent was recognised by Dan Maskell, a professional LTA coach at the time, and she was allowed time out from school to train. in 1956, at the age of just fifteen, she won the junior title at Wimbledon and became British Junior Champion. “This was a pivotal moment in my career as the following year, much to everyone’s surprise, I made it through to the Wimbledon semifinals.” This really was an incredible achievement, not only because of her young age but because she was unseeded – she even got a telegram of congratulations from Winston Churchill. In 1958, Christine caused another sensation by defeating Gibson, the reigning Wimbledon champion, to win the Wightman

Cup and bring it back to the UK after 21 years. “Between the ages of 16 to 21 I ate, slept and lived tennis. It was an incredibly exciting time as I got to tour the world, visiting South Africa, Australia, Europe and the US.” In 1960, with the confidence of youth and a string of titles to her name, Christine once again reached the Wimbledon semi-finals and the following year made it all the way to the final, sadly losing to fellow Brit, Angela Mortimer. Christine was an exciting player to watch, that childhood competitiveness driving her to the net for an attacking game and her height giving her a hard, winning serve. Although the pace of her game may have now slowed, she is still coaching juniors across Suffolk and continues to be an inspiration to many young women players to this day. What an ace lady! OK – you get the point! It’s holiday season and for anyone taking time off then thoughts are surely turning towards your perfect summer capsule wardrobe. With hand luggage getting smaller and smaller, it is even more important to fine tune those choices and only take the essentials, so here are a few handy tips as to what to pack. Firstly, a sturdy but stylish shoulder bag that is small enough to stuff in the overhead locker, but large enough to double up as a beach bag and fit in all your clobber. Next, your travelling outfit. Keep it simple, keep it cool and keep it chic – think hareem pants, fitted t-shirt, light jacket or jumper and trainers. This is such a versatile outfit as you can swap the trainers for heels, add a sparkly top and you’re straight out to dinner. Kick off the heels, slide on your flip flops, pop on a bikini and kaftan and it’s time to hit the beach. Now all you are missing is a couple of cool linen dresses for days out, a sarong – I never travel without one – a pair of shorts, a straw hat and sunnies and you are all set. Maybe squeeze in a maxi, a few floaty tops, jeans just in case – oh bother this, I’m checking in a bag and going for gold! Tucked behind a swathe of mature trees on the outskirts of Eye, a traditional Suffolk longhouse has been sympathetically extended and stylishly refurbished by interior designer Catherine Haddon, whose sumptuous fabrics and vintage finds perfectly complement its period features. I am greeted at the door by Catherine and her spaniel Molly and immediately whisked through to the large family kitchen where Catherine is busy reassembling some cushion covers whilst simultaneously arranging a large display of fragrant stocks. Magically, a coffee soon appears and as the cushions are plumped and the spicy scent of the stocks fills the air, Catherine tells me of the journey that led her to Suffolk. She trained in London as an interior designer and back in the day, worked for Nina Campbell and Joanna Wood, two of the world’s most influential and respected designers. “It was great fun as we were

involved in some very prestigious projects. In the 80s I helped open the Pimlico Shop for Joanna which sold a mixture of new designer products and antiques, and I would spend weekends hunting for treasure at places like Bermondsey Market and Christies auction rooms.” After working alongside top designers and learning her craft as both a designer and a seamstress, Catherine opened a curtain shop in Clapham with her sister called ‘Well Hung’ and finally moving to Suffolk in 2000. Catherine originally relocated to Saxmundham, where she continued to work as an interior designer and was also busy 19

being a mum to her two children. She moved to the farmhouse in Eye nine years ago, it being the family home of her partner David whose father had purchased it for the princely sum of £6000 in 1954! “Having four children between us we did need to think about the layout of the property and how it would work for us all as a family. We doubled the size of the sitting room and added two bedrooms and a bathroom. I have also refitted the kitchen and added the French windows to the terrace so that the room feels much brighter.” As we take a look around it is obvious that Catherine has also applied her deftness of touch to all of the rooms as they are beautifully styled, with rich textiles, heavy curtains and unusual antique finds. The kitchen is the heart of the home and I love the huge granite topped island that lends itself to 20

the varying needs of family life. The units are painted in French Grey and Hague Blue and the mismatched sideboards and cabinets display an assortment of china jugs, pretty bowls and candles. The kitchen table is perfectly positioned in front of the French windows that open to a sheltered terrace at the rear. “This patio catches the evening sun, so we tend to gather here to catch up at the end of the day or just relax with a drink before supper.” To other end of the kitchen, open studwork leads through to a snug, which is in the older part of the property, and in here deep sofas are gathered around a wood-burner set within an inglenook fireplace. The dining room boasts another impressive fireplace and this room has gorgeous exposed beams to the walls and ceiling and a parquet floor that Catherine believes came from an old

Victorian schoolhouse “This room comes alive at Christmas as we keep the fire well stoked so it offers guests a lovely warm welcome.” The sitting room is wonderfully light and spacious and has been almost doubled in size by the recent extension. “By extending this room and adding on the little reading room to the side we have created an incredibly versatile space which means we can all be together or we can tuck ourselves away if we fancy it.” Catherine also had the foresight to add a pair of French windows that open out to the garden, allowing them to bring the outside in and flood the room with natural light. Upstairs, uneven floorboards, low doorways and a wealth of beams add such a wonderful feeling of history, and the bedrooms have been stylishly decorated with chalky whites and dressed with pretty

French linens. Antique wooden chairs grace the corners, gilt framed botanical prints adorn the walls and beds are piled high with goose down pillows and cushions. They are an oasis of calm and you can imagine retreating to your room to read in the armchair by the window and watch as the dappled sunlight slowly retreats across lawn below. All of the rooms have an elegance and seemingly effortless style that bring the features of the old farmhouse alive and Catherine’s clever use of texture and colour perfectly showcase her talents as an interior designer. Be a name in our frame

This charity’s popular volunteer recruitment drive – that sees people add themselves to novelty frames such as the one pictured – has been relaunched after great success last year. The drive aims to get people helping out at any one of the 32 East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) shops across the region. A wildflower meadow is a rare thing of untamed beauty; an oasis for flora and fauna alike. They take years to become fully established and require vision, patience and enthusiasm – something that luckily, Nick Cook has by the wheelbarrow-load. Nick and his partner Matthew live at the Old Rectory, Athelington; a handsome Victorian property where scented roses clamber up walls, benches beneath towering pine trees offer views of gently sweeping lawns and a magnificent Portuguese laurel frames the entrance to a shady woodland walkway and fills the air with its heady fragrance. And, tucked in amongst a swathe of mature trees and edged by a small stream, there is also a small meadow that Nick has spent the last three years tirelessly restoring. “When we bought the house, this field was already designated an Area of Special Scientific Interest as it has never been cultivated.

It had been used as a pony paddock, but I could immediately see the potential for reinstating the pasture and creating a wildflower meadow.” Today, bathed in the golden glow of the late summer sun, the grasses shimmer and sway and butterflies flit and flutter from one flower to another, stocking up on sweet nectar before nightfall. Nick takes me to down through the orchard for a closer inspection and as we wander the mown pathways, he talks me through the process of creating this wild sanctuary. “We sowed the wild seed mix in April 2015 and once this germinated it was a case of keeping on top of the weeds. I think I hand pulled over 31

a hundred bags of weeds that first summer. You manage the meadow like a traditional hay field, so it needs to be cut and cleared for hay in July and then grazed by sheep from September through to about December. Sheep crop the grass very short which allows the perennial flowers more of a chance to push through and become established the following spring.” Creating a wildflower meadow is obviously hard work and any romantic notions I might have had of just scattering a few seeds from a wicker trug and then enjoying swathes of flowers a few weeks later are soon floating off on the gentle summer breeze. Nick however knew what he was taking on. At Barton Grange, their previous property, which is just a mile away as the crow flies, he created a four-acre wildflower meadow from an area of land that was 32

formerly just agricultural land; an ambiguous project that was a little ‘trial and error’ in the beginning but ultimately resulted in the most wonderful wildflower meadow. “It was a huge success story and we used to open the meadow to the public to inspire people to create their own wild areas; small pockets where our native species can flourish and thrive.” With the meadow at Athelington now in its third summer, Nick has once again thrown open the garden gate and at the time of writing is looking forward to welcoming visitors in July, before it is cut for hay. Nick buys a bespoke wildflower mix from Emorsgate Seeds of Norfolk (Walnes Seeds in Earl Soham now offer a wildflower mix as well) and as we explore the meadow he points out the different species. Oxeye daisies nod in unison, their pretty white

flowers all turned towards the sun as if in worship; the purple crowns of Common knapweed are just beginning to bloom and the burnished gold flowers of yellow rattle are woven in around the grasses. “This is an excellent plant as it suppresses the coarse grasses and helps the perennials get established,” explains Nick as he brushes his hand through their tangled net of stems. We also spot the frothy yellow of Lady’s bedstraw, the distinctive Birdsfoot trefoil, a creeping carpet of violet Selfheal and the delicate cream umbrellas of Burnet saxifrage. Nick also shows me a tiny Bee orchid that has found its place in the sunlight and finally his ‘pièce de résistance’ – the gorgeous Pyramid orchid. These spikes of vibrant pink are dotted throughout the meadow and they are a

relatively rare native species that has flourished since Nick started managing it. As an interior designer, Nick’s creative flair has certainly played an important part in the visual conception of this project, but maybe it is his roots that have reconnected him with the land. Originally a farmer’s son from Hampshire, he has an inherent understanding and deep appreciation of the natural world. His meadow is a haven for wildlife, attracting thousands of different insects, and perhaps if we take inspiration from Nick’s passion and plant our own small patch of wild beauty, together we can create a tapestry across the Suffolk countryside that will become a lasting legacy for the future. www.wildflowermeadow.org.uk

Megan Rose Clark’s watercolour paintings of pots all lined up in a row have a simplicity and symmetry that is incredibly pleasing to the eye. They make you lean forward to take a closer look and the intricacies of the hand painted detail are just exquisite. Megan’s work first caught our eye at a recent Makers Market in Framlingham. Her crisp colour palette, unique subject matter and clever composition is original and interesting and has a lovely lightness of touch. She has only been exhibiting this style of work for less than a year but has been delighted by the positive response; she has already had a solo exhibition at Applaud Coffee in St Peter’s Street, Ipswich and has work hanging in the new design and interiors shop, George Juniper in Peasenhall. I pay a visit to Megan’s studio at her home in Ipswich to discover a little more about her potty imagination!

After school, Megan did her Art Foundation at Suffolk New College and then went on to study Performance and Visual Art at Brighton for three years. Since graduating in 2015, she has divided her time between her art and being an extra on various film productions, the latest being the new fantasy adventure adaptation of Dumbo, directed by Tim Burton. As much as I would love to find out more, I stick to the script and learn that her brother is currently gaining a reputation as a skate artist with a political message to impart and that her uncle was formerly the head of Fine Art

at Norwich School of Art. Megan, herself however, seems genuinely surprised by her success. Meganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s studio reflects not only her art, but also herself as it is neat, stylish and composed. Pretty pots of varying sizes line the window sill and larger vases filled with dried flower heads are arranged with effortless style on top of the work unit, where jars and baskets line the shelves in perfect order. At her desk, Megan is working on another line-up and is happy to paint as we chat, carefully mixing her watercolours and then steadily applying very fine lines to create the spikes of a fern peeking out of one of the pots. Her paintings are hand drawn with such amazing precision and accuracy and I love the fact that they are all so unique. She

admits that this is because she paints from her imagination, simply deciding on a colour tone and then letting her brushstrokes follow her mindâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eye; a succulent in this pot, a single stem in that one. There is an illustrative quality to Meganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work and she often uses gold foil or ink to delicately emboss an elaborate pattern onto the pots, giving them a lustre and an opulence that complements the natural simplicity of the plants. She paints pots, vases and bottles of all shapes and sizes and the carefully considered spacing between them allows the whole painting room to breathe. As well as her watercolours, Megan also hand embroiders her designs onto cotton linen, which she stretches across circular wooden frames, or onto velvet to create beautiful wall

hangings. Once again, the workmanship and attention to detail is quite incredible; the tiny stitches managing to depict every single leaf. There is such youthfulness to Meganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work, the colours are fresh and bright, and they have an uplifting quality that is hard to define. And, although they are all quite similar, this familiarity is somehow very reassuring. They draw you in and invite you to study the intricate detail of each pot, the shape and form of the plants; wispy grasses, prickly cacti, symmetrical succulents, the tiny buds on a single flower, the veins on the underside of a leaf or the fragility of a dried seed head. They are quite beautiful and there is a calmness to be found in the neat and exact nature of her art.

At just twenty-five, Megan it still exploring her creative options and like any young artist who is just getting established is aware that life is about juggling the bank balance with the pursuit of your passion and she has a busy summer planned. As well as her work as an extra and the various markets that she regularly attends, Megan is also working on a performance art piece that will be revealed later this year and is exhibiting at Art on the Prom in Felixstowe on the 2nd September. These are exciting times and I for one am looking forward to seeing more of her paintings and her mix and match painted pots. Take your pick Picking flowers from your garden is a pleasure you can enjoy all year round. But in the summer, when the garden is abundant, treating yourself to a few bits in the house is a seasonal delight. We ask florist Brigitte Girling of Moss & Stone Floral Design for her top picks. 42

“Nothing can compete with the delicious heady scent of a blousy rose, sweet honeysuckle and zingy mint freshly picked from the garden and arranged in a small posy for your kitchen table. Don’t be scared of picking flowers, as for some, such as Roses, Dahlias and many annuals, it encourages them to produce blooms for you to enjoy throughout the season. I also love the beauty of those that only appear for a week or two, such as lilac, peonies and poppies, as these are arguably more wonderful simply because of their brief transitory nature. Some of the best annuals for cut flowers are phlox creme brûlée, sweetpeas, cosmos, cornflowers, calendula, cerinthe and larkspur. Remember your herbs: mint, rosemary and sage, as they are so deliciously fragrant, and for foliage, shrubs such as choisya, philadelphus, acer, pittosporum, spirea and viburnum, give a real depth to your arrangement.

The easiest way to enjoy your garden flowers is to pick a few with a touch of foliage and place them in a simple jug. Simply think about how flowers grow in the garden and try to replicate nature. Place similar flowers together, but all at slightly different heights and angles to create a garden feel and add a few twisty stems of clematis or jasmine to give a sense of movement. If you want to have a go at arranging your flowers in a more considered way, find a suitable container, scrunch some chicken wire inside and add water – avoid using floral foam as it is not biodegradable and does not allow you to achieve such a loose natural look. Then think about creating an outline shape with a few bits of foliage and fill in with flowers. There are no rules, just enjoy the process and the prettiness you create – you really can’t go wrong.” www.mossandstone.co.uk 43

Blooming marvellous July can be a challenging month as the weather still has the capacity to surprise us! Make sure that tall plants and climbers are well supported otherwise you could come home to battered borders and broken stems. If we are blessed with sunshine, then the best time to water is at dusk when the water droplets are less likely to heat up and damage the foliage. Keep your secateurs handy and feel free to cut back hardy geraniums, delphiniums and penstemon to encourage second flowering and continue to deadhead roses and sweet peas for lasting blooms. As the summer rolls on and we enter August it is all about keeping your pots, plants and vegetables watered – don’t forget to also keep the bird bath topped up and to put out dishes for any nocturnal visitors such as

hedgehogs. If you have fruit cages or nets, check daily to make sure you don’t have any unwanted guests – it is amazing how much damage one hungry blackbird can do – and if you do get a glut of soft fruits, freeze on trays for a coupe of hours before bagging up and keeping for use later in the year. Dew-soaked lawns and misty mornings herald the countdown to autumn and the beautifully mellow month of September. This is a good time to check for gaps in your planting and to fill with autumn-flowering favourites such as sedum and showy chrysanthemums, and to plant new perennials that will pop up next summer and surprise you. If you have the space, it is also the ideal time to order new trees and shrubs, but wait until the ground has had a goodsoaking before you attempt to plant them.

Lucinda and Crispin Clay of Munchy Seeds have been handroasting tasty treats and nutritious nibbles in Suffolk for over twenty years, so it makes perfect sense to drop in at their factory in Leiston at around snack time. Lucinda aka ‘Mrs Munchy’ is there to greet me, a vivacious, energetic New Zealander who has me buttoned up in a white coat and stuffed into a blue hairnet before I can say ‘Omega Sprinkles’! As we take a tour of the factory we chat about how she ended up in Suffolk and where the idea for the business came from. “Growing up in New Zealand, seeds were very much part of the average family diet. My gran used to toast her seeds in a savoury sauce and as kids, my brothers, sister and I loved to sprinkle them over white bread and butter as a treat.” It was when Lucinda returned home after eight years travelling the

world selling potato peelers – now there is a story for another issue – that she and her mum decided to try and sell ‘Granny’s seeds’ at a local flea market. They were an instant success and her parents have been roasting their Munchy Seeds in New Zealand for over thirty years. Lucinda met Crispin whilst they were travelling around Australia and after falling for his English charm and promise of a home by the sea, in 1998 they both returned to Suffolk. Needing a job, Lucinda decided to see if she could sell her Munchy Seeds here and took a stall at a food fair at

Once again, these delicious wholesome snacks were a hit and within six months both she and Crispin were knee deep in roasted seeds. “In those early days it was great fun but also incredibly hard work. We would regularly be up all-night roasting and hand-filling tubs to take to a show early the next morning. It was madness, but because we were doing it together we just treated it as one big adventure.” Within the first few years they were lucky to win a large contract with a health food company called ‘The Food Doctor’. “We had a great three or four years and then one day in 2006 they pulled the plug. It was a massive knock as it made up half our orders so we had to trim the business right back.”

themselves and in 2007 they rebranded Munchy Seeds with the funky fun packaging that is instantly recognisable today. “We went back on the road, this time with two small children in tow! By reengaging with our customers, we soon realised how important the health benefits of our seeds were. They all wanted healthy nutritious snacks and as all our toasted seeds are gluten, wheat and yeast free and contain no artificial colourings or preservatives we knew we were in the right place at the right time.” Today, ten years later, the business is thriving; Crispin and Lucinda employ sixteen crew and Munchy Seeds are stocked by Sainsburys, Co-Op, Lakeland and various farm shops across the UK.

It may have been a harsh lesson, but it forced Crispin and Lucinda to reinvent

include pumpkin, hemp, linseed, sunflower, sesame, rapeseed and amaranth, are still mixed by hand and basted in granny’s secret sauce before the other dry ingredients are added. Each batch is then roasted lightly for just under an hour to lock in all the flavours “In the last few years we have invested in some serious machinery which weighs the seeds and automatically dispenses them into the tubs. Although we could hand-fill a 1000 tubs a day, this has saved so much time and has allowed us to move into supplying the larger catering companies, which we see as one of our biggest growth areas. The snack packs are also really popular we sold 1.6 million in 2017 – and so this year we bought our own packing machine, which again means we can scale production to meet demand.”

Finally, we reach the packing station and there, laid out on the shelves are tubs and tubs of Munchy Seeds. On goes the kettle and we settle down to some serious snacking. Lucinda cracks opens the Choccy Apricot whilst I indulge in the new Salted Caramel before moving on to a sprinkling of Honey Seeds topped off with a few Sesame Sprinkles. They are all delicious and are not only for snacking, as Lucinda tells me they are wonderful tossed in a fresh green salad, whizzed up in a breakfast smoothie or scattered over some creamy yoghurt, but for now they are going down a treat. www.munchyseeds.co.uk

Citrus white sangria sparkler

Summer is not summer until you have sipped a few cocktails and Sangria is always a popular choice. This fabulous white wine version is light and refreshing and ridiculously quaffable! It is so easy to make and is perfect for parties as you can prepare it ahead and just leave to chill. Feel free to play with the sweetness to suit your own tastes and if you must, then you can always swap the sparkling wine for soda water and leave out the vodka â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but that might just spoil all the fun!

Ingredients: 1 pink grapefruit 2 lemons 2 limes A good handful of fresh mint leaves 2 measures of vodka 2 tablespoons of simple syrup or agave nectar 1 bottle of dry white wine such as Pinot Grigio or Riesling 1 bottle of chilled sparkling Vino Verde or Prosecco Ice to serve

Method Slice the grapefruit and then cut into quarters. Slice the lemon and limes. Pop all the ingredients except the sparkling Vino Verde or Prosecco into a large pitcher. Stir and then leave to chill in the fridge until the guests arrive. When you are ready, add the sparkling wine and then serve over plenty of ice and top with a few sprigs of fresh mint. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s get the party started.

Coastal connections Sometimes it can be hard to motivate certain people to go for a walk, and no, for once it is not reluctant teenagers. This time it is the dads and it would appear that they have a certain aversion to walking away from a pub, especially one that they have just arrived at, serves an excellent local pint and offers outstanding views across the River Deben. Fear not, this gentle stroll gently circles around the back of the pub and will return us safely to the shores of the river and the terrace of The Ramsholt Arms within the hour. I can remember the first time I visited this iconic Suffolk pub; it felt as if I had discovered a secret that was known only to ancient mariners and salty sea dogs, washed up river with a story to tell. 62

Now, The Ramsholt Arms is one of most popular pubs along the riverside, but there is still a little magic to be found here and the setting sun â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the myriad of pinks, oranges and gold reflecting off the water â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is as timeless and beautiful as ever. All of this, and the fact that the pub serves a mean fish and chips, make it an easy choice for our family walk this issue. Park at the pub and then walk back up the hill until you see a bridleway sign to the left, just before a red brick wall. Head through the trees and follow the path as it emerges and leads up past a couple of cottages which have enviable views across meadowland to the river. Bear left after the second cottage until you come to a lane then turn left and head up towards the

picturesque All Saints Church. Take a moment to admire this most idyllic of settings before following the bridleway to the right which leads along the edge of farmland, meeting a farm track at the top where you turn left towards Ramsholt Lodge Farm. At the end of this straight track you drop down to the left and pass ‘Simpers of Suffolk’ – a family business that grows and harvests mussels and oysters from the river, which must literally run past the bottom of their garden!

meadows to another gate at the far side which sits just to the right of a woodland area. In the summer this is easy going but beware – in the winter it can get very boggy, so wellies are a must. Once you have passed through the second gate head up the bank and you will see the river stretching out below. Depending on the tide, either turn left and stick to the higher path or kick off your shoes and socks and have a paddle along the shoreline – great for kids and dogs alike.

This sandy track loops back to the church, and here you need to take then bridleway to the right and head down towards the river which can be seen shimmering through the trees. Where the path divides, take the righthand fork and pass through a wooden gate. Again, bear right until you see the path leading across the water

Having worked up a thirst, what better way to take in the view than with a crisp white wine and that much needed, much talked about first pint whilst carefully perusing the menu, before all ordering the same thing – you guessed it – fish and chips. 63
