who’s about

who’s about

For folk’s sake For the past seven years, folk from the east have taken over the ancient parklands of Glemham Hall to create a world that is a glorious celebration of music, folklore and mythical beasts. We track down founders, John and Becky Marshall-Potter, to find out why FolkEast has sparked the imagination of musicians and visitors alike. John and Becky met on stage back in 1987, when he was the stage manager for a production of ‘Twelfth Night’ and she was playing the role of Viola, and they have been on and off it ever since. John had been working the festival scene for years, mainly as part of the sound production and technical crews and has stories to tell of Led Zeppelin playing Knebworth in 1979, the early days of the free festivals 4

and Glastonbury, and the fire that nearly destroyed Alexandria Palace back in 1980. It was a life spent on the road but when he met Becky they decided to settle in Suffolk. “We had fond memories of The Albion Fairs; small weekend festivals held across East Anglia. They were full of creativity and spectacle, and to a certain extent we have tried to capture some of this magic within the heart of FolkEast.”

Living near Halesworth, Becky and John became involved with the organisation of ‘Gig in the Park’; a 3-day music festival that finally went out with a bang in 2012. This was the same year they put on the first FolkEast, originally held at Somerleyton Hall before moving to Glemham.“We knew how to run festivals so setting up our own seemed the next logical step. There is something very special about opening the gate to an empty meadow and then creating a unique society within it for just one weekend.” They couldn’t have found a more wonderful setting and the wrapped oak tree has become an iconic symbol for the countdown to the start of the festival. FolkEast has quickly gained a reputation for being well-run and professional, and many leading folk legends have played the main stage. But it also has a quirky underbelly where Treacle Mines and knitted bicycles

exist alongside the Jackalope, a mythical beast that stalks the festival and was last seen heading in the direction of Long Sufferingham! “We have a brilliant team and every year we get together at the pub to throw around ideas. People love having this creative freedom so when Juan said he wanted to make a willow creature that was a cross between a Suffolk jack rabbit and a Peruvian antelope we were delighted.” New for 2019 is an interactive children’s trail, performances by Made2Measure, High Tide and Wonderful Beast, and a focus on ancient crafts. The line-up sees folk-rock pioneer Richard Thompson, Cara Dillon and Karine Polwart all taking to the Sunset Stage, and although John and Becky may not be sharing their limelight, you can rest assured they will be in the wings, quietly overseeing another fabulous year of folk. 16th-18th August www.folkeast.co.uk

Owned by Stewart and Louise McKenzie, The Greyhound in Pettistree is a hidden gem. Tucked away in what is a tiny, but gorgeous village on the outskirts of Wickham Market, the pub itself has become known far beyond the village boundary. Recommended in Sawdays Great British Pub Guide, 500 as one of the best places to eat & drink, and mentioned in The Telegraph recently as a summer pub to visit, this is a pub that won’t disappoint if you’re looking for a warm welcome, good food, a fine selection of malt whisky and of course, a lovely garden with the village church as the backdrop.

Never content to stand still, Vernon has now introduced terrace dining on Fridays from 4-8pm, with a new Stable Kitchen and Outside Bar while Chui’sDay takes a short summer break. Each week chefs will deliver a tantalising menu from the courtyard and garden terrace alongside a selection of drinks from the bar.

You can always expect the warmest of welcomes from chefs/ proprietors Jon, Lorna & their team at The Dennington Queen, and delicious, seasonal food too. This stunning village pub has a glorious interior, but come the summer, the place to be is outside. The front and rear outdoor spaces have been transformed this year, creating a lovely environment for al fresco drinking or dining. The front garden overlooks the church, and the terrace to the rear comes as a real surprise. With colourful seating and benches in the garden overlooking the duck pond, there is no better place to enjoy an early evening refreshment… 14

The Sail Loft When it comes to seaside venues, you’d struggle to find a better spot than at The Sail Loft in Southwold. Just a few strides from the beach, its outdoor seating area has stunning views over the marshes to the harbour and Walberswick beyond and if it gets chilly, the full-length windows inside allow you to enjoy the view until dark. Chef/proprietor Jonathan is renowned for his fabulous global flavours and the atmosphere is always relaxed. Our recommendation – go when the sun is setting as there is no better spot in Southwold from which to enjoy it, ideally accompanied by a chilled glass of Prosecco.

about interiors

about interiors

A fictional character Nestled within a wooded grove on the edge of Aldeburgh, local author William Blyghton has created a tranquil and restful home where he has been able to find solace after the death of his first wife and also the inspiration to write his novels, ‘The Suffolk Trilogy’ which explore loss, loneliness and the rediscovery of love. Aldeburgh is no stranger to beautiful homes, but Box House is all the more special for being tucked away out of sight, and as you step through the arched wooden gateway you feel as if you have entered a hidden world. A gravel pathway leads past neatly edged lawns and established beds and at one point the low branch of a tree invites you to bow, as if in reverence to this wonderful family home. Huge ceramic urns are carefully positioned throughout the borders and tall grasses sway gently in the breeze. Old fashioned roses ramble up the clapperboards, terracotta pots overflow with geranium, lavender and agapanthus. 18

William has lived here since 2008, although his love affair with Aldeburgh dates back more than forty years, as he and his family were regular summer visitors. “There is something about living at the edge that I have always found very appealing. I like the feeling of not being hemmed in, and the ebb and flow of the sea is a constant reminder of the rhythm of life and the hidden forces of nature.” When William and his wife purchased the property, it was a simple 1960s-style bungalow, but with great vision and creative flair they transformed it into a calm 19

about interiors

about interiors

oasis, one she was thankfully able to enjoy before she passed away. You can still see the original structure, but the property has been cleverly extended to create a wonderful single-storey home where the rooms flow effortlessly from one to the other. A lovely light-filled garden room has been added to one end, with large sash windows, French doors that open out to the garden and a vaulted ceiling with large skylights that flood the room with natural light. Deep sofas invite you pause and collect your thoughts or to sink down into conversation with friends and family, sideboards are overflowing with framed memories of generations past and stacks of paintings are lined up ready to take their turn on the walls.

20

To the other end, a master bedroom complete with a neatly ordered dressing room and spacious bathroom, was added to balance the symmetry of the house. The bedroom is shaded by a magnificent red oak tree and feels cool and quiet; a peaceful place of rest and reflection. At the front William also added a large entrance hall, which immediately gives you a feeling of light and space, and once again the walls are hung with a wonderful array of art, including an exquisitely painted botanical print by his late wife. On a table, the aerial roots of an orchid intertwine around ceramic bowls filled with an assorted collection of pebbles and shells – treasures brought back from long walks along the beach – and in a corner a stack of battered panamas tell the tale of summers spent outside in the garden.

The galley kitchen is still warmed by a faithful Aga and above the worktops wooden shelves are lined with Kilner jars, casserole dishes and saucepans. From here you go through to a central sitting room with an open fire, more comfortable sofas, a coffee table piled high with books and walls lined with bookcases – the perfect place to find yourself on a wet winter’s afternoon! William also has a study where he goes to write and, sat at his desk, he has a wonderful view out across the garden. He worked as an economist in London and when he retired and moved to Suffolk was content with the occasional consultancy project. However, after the death of his wife he turned to writing as way of trying to both express and understand his grief. His first book, ‘The House by the Marsh’ is set in Suffolk and is semi-autobiographical as the main character is also dealing with the loss

of a loved one. “I felt I needed to try and engage with this enormous tumult of emotion and creating a fictional character to tell my story allowed me to express myself without feeling self-conscious. I could draw on my own personal experience but also delve into my imagination to weave a fictional tale about grief, love and hope.” William is now happily remarried and has recently completed the third novel of his trilogy. They are all set in Suffolk and explore the adventures of men and woman in their later years, all told with a great humour and compassion that shines through in the real-life character that is William Blyghton. ‘The Suffolk Trilogy’: ‘The House by the Marsh’, ‘Abraham Soar’ and ‘Noah: An Old Fool’ (out in the autumn) are available from Amazon. www.williamblyghton.com 21

about town

Framlingham Horse Show celebrates its 125th birthday With Framlingham Castle as its backdrop, Framlingham Horse Show is a lovely annual event to attend in July, but when it first started out, 125 years ago, it was in Worlingworth, a few miles from Framlingham. Various gentlemen resident in the village held a show of cart colts, which was so popular that it was repeated in the following year. At the first Show, held at the Swan Inn, there were 35 entries and the first prize was £1 plus a new collar and dutfin! The Association’s first annual show in Framlingham was held on Friday, 26th July 1884 and was followed by a public dinner at the Crown Hotel. It had the remarkable entry of 212, with Class 1 for Suffolk Mare with Foal at Foot having 27 entries. The show has continued to hold a variety of classes for light horses, including in-hand, ridden show classes, driving and jumping competitions, while maintaining classes for Suffolk horses. This year’s show takes place on Saturday, 20th July and you can find more information on the event and its history at www.framlinghamhorseshow.co.uk 28

The school is now a public drop-off centre for a variety of items: Bread Bin Bags, Toothbrushes and Toothpaste Tubes, Baby Food Pouches, Pringles® containers and any foil Crisp Packets. There are recycling bins at school and these can be accessed at any time of the day. In addition to helping the environment, it is also a way of raising money for various charities chosen by the pupils. The school now has an Eco-Council known as ‘The Green Guardians’ and they help to maintain the collection points, meeting regularly to discuss ways that the whole school and the wider community can be involved in exciting environmental projects. Pitch up. Pitch in.

When Easton Farm Park first opened in 1974 it was one of only two educational farms in the UK that were open to the public. Since then, generations of school children have passed through the gates for a first-hand farming experience, so we catch up with owner Fi Siddall to see what the future holds. It is a glorious summer’s day when I visit, so while I wait for Fi, who is overseeing the final stages of a new entrance building, I take a stroll around the farm. Like many of us, this cluster of Victorian farm buildings holds cherished memories of visits, both as a child and as a parent, and I am filled with a wonderful sense of familiarity and nostalgia. On the surface not much has changed over the years; naughty Shetland ponies lazily rub their tails on the stable door, pigs push their mud encrusted noses through the fence in search of food, kid 30

goats scamper up and down planks and an assortment of ducks cool off in makeshift ponds created from old water troughs and cast iron feeders. Out on the lawn two goats strut towards the shade of tree, then flop down to chew the cud and down by the river a single swan dips its head below the duck weed. On my way back to meet Fi, I pass the hatchery and can’t resist the temptation to nip inside. In one of the pens, chicks huddle under a heat lamp, tiny bundles of fluff that 31

about the land

are barely a day old and exhausted after pecking their way to freedom, whilst next door their three-week old counterparts are already puffing up their feathers and scraping back the sawdust with great aplomb. In a neighbouring stable, the walls are lined with straw bales in readiness for the next group of children who will have the opportunity to hug a bunny or cradle a chick, their endless energy and chatter finally stilled in anticipation of the warm bundle that will be gently placed in their laps. One of the young helpers on the farm tells me that there is a new litter of rabbits down at Pet’s Corner; enough said so we go to investigate. There, tucked in the corner of the enclosure, a nest of young kits squirm under the straw and as we stand and watch I suddenly feel that childish wonder at the miracle of new life. 32

about the land

I finally arrive at the Barmy Barn Café where Fi has already ordered coffee and we reminisce about the fact that this used to be the turkey shed and you had to stand on tiptoe to peer through the hatches in the walls to see the chicks that were being reared in time for Christmas. Fi took over the running of the park in 2001, following in her mother, Jill Kerr’s footsteps who had managed it for more than twenty years. Since then, Fi has worked hard to maintain the balance of visitors enjoying an authentic farming experience while ensuring the farm offers more than just pigs and chickens! The children can still enjoy the thrill of holding out a flat palm and allowing the goats to greedily snuffle up the feed pellets or to have their first pony ride or bottle feed a lamb, but these days they can also come to a Magical Unicorn

weekend or a Dinosaur, Superhero or Space Day. There is now a fantastic outdoor play area, complete with zip wire and inflatable air cushion, and from this summer there will also be a new campsite so visitors can ‘pitch up’ and ‘pitch in’ at the farm. Last year Fi commissioned two ‘Cow Sheds’, unique glamping pods in the shape of a cow that could sleep a family of four, and these proved so popular she decided to create a camping area in one of the meadows. It is a beautiful setting with room for 70 pitches, only 20 with electric hook-ups as Fi wants guests to enjoy a slower pace of life, one away from phones and tablets, where families can gather around their firepit at night and share the experiences of the day. Within the new building there will be a gift shop, toilets, shower blocks and an outdoor kitchen

where campers can chat over the washing up while the children kick a ball about. For thousands of visitors a year, the farm park really is a place to escape and enjoy the simpler pleasures of rural life, so having the opportunity to stay overnight will be a dream come true. Generations of children have experienced the delight of stroking the soft muzzle of a majestic Suffolk Punch, the thrill of being pulled behind a tractor in a barrel and the total lovability of newly born donkey foal, and it is heartening to know that new memories are still being made here every day. www.eastonfarmpark.co.uk

Having owned a fashion PR company in London for fifteen years, Sam Denny-Hobson, founder of luxury brand Homespun, certainly knows one end of a cashmere cardigan from the other. I meet her at New Street Market in Woodbridge, an interiors and fashion emporium that she opened in June and has been the talk of the town ever since. Sam has lived in Suffolk for sixteen years, leaving London in search of fresh air and freedom. When she first moved back, she worked as a casting director for well-known brands within the fashion industry, but after moving to Woodbridge in 2013, she saw an opportunity to create a line of luxury cashmere. “It really was thought up over the kitchen table. Madness really as I had small kids and we were building a house, but I wanted to design clothes that fitted my lifestyle. I wasn’t interested in throwaway fashion and wanted to create beautiful pieces that you could wear every

36

day.” Homespun was initially a wholesale business, with Sam’s classic designs being supplied to luxury London fashion stores, but in 2014 she opened a boutique on the Market Hill in Woodbridge, and it wasn’t long before her brand had a loyal following in Suffolk as well. The cashmere is of the highest quality as Sam sources it directly from Mongolia where she sponsors a family of nomadic goat herders. The herders still use traditional methods, hand combing the goats in the spring, a time when they 37

would naturally be losing their coats, meaning the process is as ethically responsible as possible. “When I set up the company, I camped with the herders amongst the dramatic landscape of the vast steppes. It was quite an experience as they live in these felted yurts called gers, which are beautiful but quite basic.” Sam sends her designs to a friend who runs a factory in Ulaanbaatar, and the range of both men and women’s knitwear are produced using only the longest natural fibres, which is why the cashmere is so soft and durable. “It is a luxury product, but this is sustainable fashion and our jumpers and cardigans are machine washable which means they will last for years.”

38

As well as her luxury cashmere, Sam designs pretty cotton dresses, shirts and sleepwear that are block-printed by two family-owned companies in Jaipur, India and has just received the first batch of her new range of jeans from Shanghai. “I live in jeans and these are so comfortable. We have three styles – slim, boyfriend and wide leg – and I love them all! We also have some beautiful T-shirts made from the finest cotton that complete the look.” At Homespun, she also showcases a hand-picked selection of renowned designs, such as Margaret Howell’s wonderful contemporary pieces and the Parisian brand Soeur, which hang side-by-side with local craftspeople sourced throughout Norfolk and Suffolk. These include stylish bags by Doe Leather, Alde Custom Clothing jeans, Eiladh Allan Jewellery and tailored men’s clothing by Workhouse.

Homespun now has a new home within New Street Market, which is in the Bull Ride, an impressive building built in the 1800s to stable the coach horses for the Bull Hotel. Sam bought it last year and has created a wonderful lifestyle emporium that combines fashion, interiors, flowers and a café, all under the one roof. “I am also planning to open a spa so you can come and really indulge yourself. A spot of shopping, a treatment and then lunch. How perfect is that!” At the huge arched doorway, buckets of fresh blooms, exotic ferns and trays of potted succulents by Greenroom tempt you inside, along one side, beautiful ceramics, baskets, blankets and other tasteful homewares sourced by Pascale cause you to linger before finally pulling up a chair and enjoying a coffee and a pastry at the New Street Canteen run by Mark Sholl, who owns Leo’s Deli in Framlingham.

While we chat, a steady stream of visitors make their way through the shop, some regulars in search of their morning caffeine, others new to this exciting new shopping experience. “The response has been overwhelming. Having a café and deli on site means people will wander through to meet friends for lunch or find a corner to catch up on emails, and then leave with a gift, a bunch of flowers and maybe a treat for themselves.” On that note, I finish my coffee, buy some pink candles for a friend’s birthday, a cactus for my daughter’s collection and a rather fabulous dress that will see me through the summer – well I am a dedicated follower of fashion! Yeah butt! No butt! British weather has always been a popular topic of debate, and in recent times with good reason. Take this year. Suffolk had the driest January since 1910 and Easter was an absolute scorcher, with temperatures of 24C causing the Easter Bunny to rethink its chocolate egg strategy! In May there were cracks in the land to rival the salt flats of Bolivia and then in June torrential rainfall, flash floods and burst rivers wreaked havoc across the country.

42

Historically, East Anglia receives less rain than other parts of the UK and, with the heatwave of last year still burning in our minds, it is wise to be prepared. Watering over the summer months is an integral part of the gardening year and vital for healthy plants and abundant beds and borders. However, with climate change peeking over the garden fence, if you are wanting a ‘greener’ green garden, now is the time to invest in some old-fashioned water butts.

Rainwater is better for the plants as it doesn’t contain chlorine and, if we have another dry summer and there is a hosepipe ban, having a water butt could make all the difference. Rainwater can easily be collected from the roofs of homes, garages, greenhouses and other outbuildings if they have gutters and a drainpipe that can be fixed up to a container. Even in dry areas such as Suffolk, approx. 24,000 litres per year could be harvested from the roofs of an average household, with the rain collected during the wetter months being stored and then used throughout the summer. So, whatever the size of your garden, investing in a rain harvesting system is a simple way of doing your bit for the environment… no butts about it!

In full swing July is the month of long warm days and balmy evenings. The garden is in full swing and is fit to bursting with an abundance of glorious flowers that fill the night air with a heady cocktail of delicious fragrances. Agapanthus, Roses, Sweet peas, Honeysuckle and Day Lilies are at their best, and in the veg patch you can enjoy a feast of tomatoes, beans, lettuce and spring onions followed by strawberries; ripe and warmed by the sun. Come August and these show-stopping perennials begin to fade, and blowsy dahlias, sunflowers and other hot-coloured blooms take centre stage. To keep borders tidy, cut back any faded and tired looking foliage as this will encourage new growth

Tales from the potting shed 44

July Deadhead perennials Harvest fruit and veg Mulch, mulch, mulch

and keep deadheading roses to prolong flowering. Water in the evenings, ideally with collected rainwater, and make sure pots, ponds and bird baths are kept topped up. As September rolls in with its dew-drenched mornings and misty evenings, you can feel the garden pause. Growth slows and you can now prune climbing and rambling roses, cut back annuals and divide herbaceous perennials. Bring any tender treasures into the greenhouse and find time to plant spring bulbs, especially daffodils as these prefer a bed of warm soil. Get harvesting in the veg plot as now is the time to pick, freeze and store.

ACTIONING LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY Barker Gotelee Solicitors is here to offer practical legal advice to help you and your family.

A. The Barker Gotelee Private Client Team is experienced in dealing with similar situations.

Q. I’m worried about my mum. Since my dad passed away, she’s struggled to manage. He had always taken care of all the household finances and, while I’ve tried to help, it’s been difficult.

When you were appointed Lasting Power of Attorney, you should have received some paperwork. In order to action the LPA, you will need to make contact with the solicitor who sent the letter.

As an example, when I wanted to change Mum’s energy supplier, the utilities company said that they couldn’t take instruction from me and needed to speak to her, as the bill payer. She hates speaking on the phone and finds things like that upsetting.

It’s likely that your solicitor will then suggest meeting so you can explain why you would like it actioned. They will then also advise what LPAs you have – whether it is purely financial, or if you have health and welfare too. This would then enable you to make decisions over her future medical care.

Dad told me that they had arranged for me to have Power of Attorney over their financial affairs, which, I assume, will enable me to deal with things like that, but I don’t know how to go about using it.

With regards to the finances, the first step will be to send certified copies of the Lasting Power of Attorney status to each of the third parties that your mother is involved with, including energy companies, insurance firms and the council. Of course, it will also be necessary to inform the bank.

Your solicitor should be able to manage it all on your behalf. Whilst actioning an LPA may seem like a big step, it’s important to start the process early so you feel prepared and able to best support your mother. DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION FOR OUR PRIVATE CLIENT TEAM? From inheritance tax, Wills and trusts to powers of attorney and care fee planning, our specialists are here to help. Stirring things up

48

Now I am more than a little partial to a slice of toast thickly spread with bittersweet marmalade, and what would a scone be without a dollop of strawberry jam? So, I am looking forward to seeing Louise Miller and Liz Hubert, founders of Betty & Miller and masters of the perfect preserve. Firm friends, running buddies and now business partners, Louise and Liz are based at Crowfield, tucked in the shadow of an old windmill with glorious views over the Suffolk countryside. It is a lovely spot and as we don our obligatory blue hairnets, they give me a potted history of how they came to be here. Louise is the founder of The Suffolk Pate Company, which she set up in 2009 and ran from her garage before being offered kitchen space here at Crowfield by Jenny Gibbons, who was the owner the jam company, Fruits of Suffolk. Liz was already working part-time for Jenny, and together they shared the early starts for weekend

Farmers’ Markets and running stands at food fairs and festivals. Whilst out training for the marathon, Liz and Louise passed the time chatting about how you could merge the two businesses and so, when Jenny said she was thinking of retiring, they happily took up the baton. Betty & Miller – named after their pet running names for each other, often used when tears and tantrums were threatening to spoil a gentle 16-mile jog! – was founded in April 2017 and incorporates The Suffolk Pate Company and Fruits of Suffolk, which has now been rebranded as Preserves of Suffolk. 49

about food

Today, Liz and Louise are making jam, so we move through to the kitchen where six huge stainless pans are filled with partially softened fruit. Louise sets them to boil while Liz carefully measures out the sugar and powder pectin, which is then poured over the fruit, strawberry first, then raspberry and finally the blackcurrant. Trays of glass jars are popped in the oven to be sterilized and, although we are chatting, I get the sense that both girls are very aware of the precise timings. As the fruit starts to come to the boil they get to stirring, sometimes two pans at a time, and as one leaves to go and fetch more jars, the other instinctively takes over. The jams smell amazing, especially the raspberry which has turned a fabulously vibrant pink. The strawberry has an intensely sweet smell and froths and foams, while the blackcurrant glistens, the small spherical fruit like black jewels. 50

The strawberry jam comes off the heat first and Louise explains that you need to keep stirring to ensure all the foam is dispersed. Liz takes out a tray of hot jars and replaces it with another, this time laden with red and white chequered lids, and now the raspberry is ready. While she gets stirring, Louise gets pouring, filling each jar with well-practised accuracy. The lids come out and more jars go in. The lids are twisted on and the jars upended to make sure they are properly sealed. Liz is now pouring, and Louise is back to stirring as the blackcurrant needs a few more minutes. There is a wonderful rhythm to the work stir, pour, twist, stir, pour, twist – and they admit they normally have the music on, especially on Fridays when you will often hear Dolly being belted out. Now that’s what I call a jam session!

Their Preserves of Suffolk brand produces a wide range of jams and chutneys, and Liz and Louise source the fruit from local producers including Grange Farm, Hasketon, High House Fruit Farm, Sudbourne and D.C. Williamsons, wholesalers based on the Suffolk/Essex border. One of the only ingredients they cannot get locally are the Seville marmalade oranges These arrive in bulk just after Christmas, so January sees the whole family frantically juicing and prepping over a ton of oranges, which are then frozen, ready for batch cooking throughout the year. The savoury pates are made to order as they have a short sell by date, and the meat is again sourced locally; chicken livers from Diaper, venison from Truly Traceable and duck from Gressingham, while the blue cheese is from

Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses and the fresh herbs are from Wards of Debenham. Looking along the stacked shelves at the orders ready to go out to local farm shops, cafes and East of England Coop stores, it is obvious that I am not only one with a penchant for a traditionally made preserve, whose deliciously sweet taste summons up memories of watching your mum making jam after an afternoon spent strawberry picking. Walking back to the car with a treasured pot of warm raspberry preserve in my bag, I hear the music being turned up and I drive away leaving Louise and Liz to pump up the jam. www.bettyandmiller.co.uk

We celebrate Suffolk’s culinary roots this summer The Unruly Pig brings home the bacon Chef Dave Wall from the Unruly Pig in Bromeswell, has won the prestigious Pub Restaurant Chef Award at the Craft Guild of Chefs Awards 2019. The other finalists in the category were Leigh Evans, Methuen Arms, Butcombe Brewery and Robert Taylor, The Compasses Inn. This is the second year Dave has been shortlisted and represents a huge achievement.

54

“I’m absolutely thrilled and honoured to have won the Pub Restaurant Chef Award! I didn’t think I had a chance up against such brilliant competition, so I’m blown away to have joined a very esteemed list of winners for the award,” commented Dave Wall. Former winners have included the likes of TV Chef Tom Kerridge as well as other Michelin starred chefs. Owner Brendan Padfield said:“Dave’s an absolute star, he’s an outstanding chef and we’re all very proud. It’s a great accolade for the whole team.”

Game on! Lynn and Steve Tricker of Truly Traceable recently reached the final 3 in the Game Champion Category at the Countryside Alliance awards from an initial 18,000 nominations! Bakewell Tart Sweet shortcrust pastry with a thick layer of raspberry jam and a fluffy frangipane topping makes Bakewell Tart a firm favourite for summer picnics. Ingredients 200g plain flour 2 tbsp icing sugar 100g unsalted butter - chilled and diced 1 large free-range egg - beaten 1 tbsp milk For the filling: 150g unsalted butter 150g golden caster sugar 3 large free-range eggs - beaten 150g ground almonds Grated zest of 1 unwaxed lemon 4 tbsp raspberry jam 2 tbsp flaked almonds 56

Method To make the shortcrust pastry, sift the flour, icing sugar and a pinch of salt into a large bowl. Rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the beaten egg and milk and lightly bring together to form a soft dough – be careful not to overwork it. Chill, wrapped in cling film, for 30 minutes. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to line a 23cm fluted, loose-bottomed tart tin. Trim the excess and prick all over with a fork and chill for another 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan160°C/gas 4, along with a baking sheet.

MY

Line the pastry case with baking paper and fill with baking beans. Place on the pre-heated baking sheet and bake blind for 15 minutes, then remove the beans and paper and return to the oven to cook for a further 5 minutes to dry out the base. To make the filling, beat the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Beat in the eggs a little at a time, then fold in the ground almonds and lemon zest. Spread the base of the pastry case generously with jam, then spoon over the filling mixture and scatter with the almonds. Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden, well risen and just set in the centre. Leave to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then lift onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Dust with icing sugar just before you slice and serve.

The Cider and Song Festival is a wonderful celebration of all things apple, taking place at the Museum of East Anglian Life, Stowmarket from the 18th-19th October.

For your chance of winning this fabulous prize, please answer the following question correctly:

It kicks off on the Friday evening with live music, a cider bar and tutored cider tastings, and then on the Saturday there is a full day of family-friendly fun. You can have a go at pressing your own apples, take part in apple identification with Orchards East, join the music workshops or even try your hand at archery. The fun carries on right through to the evening when there will be more live music, all washed down with a fine selection of ciders.

Q: Where is the Cider and Song Festival held?

(Held in collaboration with the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust)

round & about

round & about

All by myself It’s 7am and time for the aboutfram walk. The kids are nowhere to be seen, neither is Sarah, Kerry or anyone else for that matter. They are scattered to the four winds; interrailing with friends, school trip to Normandy, work experience, in bed, a Greek island, Madagascar …. Excuses. Excuses. At least the dogs seem keen! I decide to keep it local and start in Brandeston, at the footpath that runs along the side of the school playing field and a rape field, pungent after last night’s rain. This leads you down over two small foot bridges before crossing the River Deben, slow and languid at this early hour. I go through the gate and into a meadow where the dogs chase through the dew-drenched

62

grass, and then bear right and go through another gate, where the footpath runs along the edge of a field and out onto a lane. I turn left and at the brow of the hill, I pick up the footpath and turn right down a farm track towards a pretty red brick cottage and an old barn that is just beginning to have new life blown through its rafters. Just before the pond I turn left and head down to a footbridge, where the path cuts a strip through the ripening wheat and then right, hugging the field’s boundary. It is a still morning, the silence only broken by the occasional cry of a buzzard and the flap of panicking pigeons. Ancient oaks line the

path ahead and for a moment time stands still. I can see no houses, no overhead wires, no sounds of the daily commute. The dogs sit and wait. PING. Illusion shattered. I’ve got a text! I turn right and head up the hill towards a gloriously unexpected treat – a wildflower meadow in full bloom. It is simply spectacular: poppies, oxeye daisies, the happy hum of bees already hard at work – it makes me want to return with a floaty dress and bottle of Timotei. At the lane I go left and then right, walking along the road to Cretingham. The Bell is shut – note to self to repeat at a more convivial hour – so I carry on down past the church and then turn right and along the driveway to Kingfishers Country Park. A few golfers are already in full swing and breakfast would

be a great option as they are open from 7.30am, but sadly I don’t have time this morning. The footpath takes me past the clubhouse and then right, along the path to the side of the first tee. Crossing the fairway at the bottom, I go over a small bridge and through the woods before emerging into another meadow. An old drovers’ path leads along the edge of a copse and here a green woodpecker laughs at my attempts to make the dogs walk to heel. At the gate I turn right and walk back through Brandeston which is already up and about – friends toot as they drive off to work, other dog walkers wave as they start their daily circuit – and, as I return home, I am gladdened by the sound of the kettle boiling. Perhaps I haven’t been abandoned after all. 63
