Life’s Journey Have you ever stopped to think what directed you to the life journey that you are on? Let’s face it, there are so many different scenarios in your life that could have had an impact of your journey… and each choice that you made, lead you to where you are today.

science and is quite the genius as a matter of fact.

Sometimes I ask myself; what if I didn’t take that opportunity that presented itself? Life throws us many opportunities on many occasions. Most of you reading this are probably horse people and wonder “how did we get into this life style”? Was it our parents who pushed it upon us? Was it passions that we lived and breathed? As I sit here today, I am very thankful and happy that I reached out and grabbed the opportunities that I did. I couldn’t have asked for a better journey and I know the journey ahead of me is going to be just as good. One of those life choices I made was to have another baby; another girl to ride horses with, another boy to watch play sports. Life would continue and be full of love and laughter, spending time at the shows or at sports events. The journey was fun and I couldn’t imagine my life any other way. Well today that beautiful baby boy is 5 years old and has his own agenda. Brody is smart, funny, and loves to have fun. It all started at birth. I would throw him on my horse and tell him how great horses were (because they are of course!) and he would just shoot me this blank look! I soon came to find out that there is no part of Brody that wants to enter the show jumping ring. He doesn’t want me to cut his hair, he always has to dress himself, and oh boy, he has a style of his very own! He is an individual that also has a passion for

I had no idea where Brody’s journey would lead him but all I know is it will certainly be a good one. My need of pushing him into things that I think he should do has slowly subsided, thankfully! Being a mother however, I will always present a few opportunities for him. But in the end, I will step aside and let his decisions direct his journey. One day I will look back to this and be very proud of the choices that he made on his own. Whether he is that accomplished snowboarder or the surfer who needs the salt running through his veins. Who knows really, that is the beauty of life. Maybe one day the horse thing will rub off on him and he will be like the rest of us horse-crazy people; a mother can only wish, right!? Wherever it is that life takes him, I hope and pray for good health and of course a life full of happiness. I also wish for a life full of wonderful experiences and opportunities that someday he can share with his babies and grand babies. Love always,

Mom

Preparing For The Next

Fence T

here are five phases of jumping: the approach of the fence; the take-off; the bascule or arc over the fence; the landing; and the recovery. The final phase is important because it will set the horse up for the proper approach of the next obstacle. If the pace, balance and steering are not under control after the landing, the rider will need to quickly regain them during the recovery before attempting the subsequent jump. Tracy Magness is a hunter/jumper trainer at Lake View Farm in Maryland and winner of more than 30 Show Jumping Grand Prixs. She has been named the leading Grand Prix rider at HITS Ocala three times and knows the importance of preparing for the next fence. “Over the jump and upon landing you should always be looking to your approach for the next fence. This will help you balance and quicken your recovery. In turn, your horse will land balanced and be ready for the next turn or jump.” Along with focusing on the next fence with your eyes, prepare your mount for a change in direction by asking for

By Sharon Miner

the lead you want during the recovery if it is incorrect during the landing. Collect your horse by shortening or lengthening the stride as needed to approach the next obstacle. Correct your own position as your balance and form will assist the horse in his balance and form.

Sometimes you will have several strides before reaching the approach of the next fence, but not always. During a combination (two or three fences considered as one obstacle), you may only have a stride or two of a canter or gallop before taking off again. But what if your plans go awry and the landing after the fence is not pretty? “If you had a bad jump or your horse lands downhill (on the forehand) raise your eyes up and bend your elbows,” advises Magness. “Go against your natural instinct to look down and

instead look toward where you are heading and your horse will naturally rise up into your hand.” When walking the course prior to the class, visualize how you will prepare for each phase of jumping for every obstacle. Just don’t forget the final phase, the recovery. Calculate how many strides you have before the next fence so you will know how much time you will have to prepare for that jumping obstacle. “Having a plan is really important but sometimes if your jump or recovery is bad, you may need to be flexible,” added Magness. “The decision to add a stride might be wise to give yourself more time.”

Cruciotti Cruises To The Win Interviewed By Hope Sickler

TEENAGER WINS $50,000 GRIFFS RESIDENTIAL GRAND PRIX AT COLORADO HORSE PARK 17-year-old Kelli Crucoitti of Elizabeth, Colorado could arguably be one of the hardest working teenagers in the country. She takes her horses and her job as a jockey very seriously and tries to make the most out of every hour of the day and that was dually noted when she took home the victory at Colorado Horse Park’s (CHP) Summer in the Rockies III in Parker, Colorado. “I was riding my 10-year-old mare that goes by the name of Zidante, who is a Dutch Warmblood. I have had her for about 3 years now. She was originally bought to be my junior jumper. When we imported her, she did not have any experience jumping 1.40-1.45 fences, so we progressed her slowly and moved her up gradually,” said Cruciotti.

Zidante is known around the barn for having an addicting personality and certainly has the mind for the sport that she is in. Cruciotti was only one of three that

had clear rounds during the $50,000 Griffs Residential Grand Prix. 22 total participants attempted the glamourous course designed by Hector Loyola and it was Cruciotti and Zidante that took home the with a very respectable clear jump-off time of 44.96 seconds. “I thought that Hector did a wonderful job with designing the course for the class. There were plenty of trick spots in the first round that you had to navigate but the course also allowed the horses to jump in great style. The jump off really suited my horses natural way of going, with long gallops down to single fences and then a short turn back on the combination. I couldn’t be more pleased with her (Zidante).” continued on page 22

Kelli Crucoitti & Zidante Cruciotti will be at the horse park for the next three weeks before heading to Kentucky for the North American Junior and Youth Rider Championships. Originally from California, Cruciotti and her family now reside in Colorado. “I am looking forward to going to Kentucky and seeing how we stack up down there. My goals for this year is to really focus on the equitation finals and continue to develop my partnership with my jumpers. I cannot thank my team enough for all that they do for me. My mother, Cindy Cruciotti, Peter Wylde and Kelli Clevenger. Without them, none of this would be possible.

Horse Aids Rider To Make An Amazing Comeback! Katie Monahan Prudent and Belladonna

She Picked Me! When Katie Monahan Prudent was ready to return to competing in the Grand Prix ring after her brain surgery, she knew she needed a certain type of horse, one that wouldn’t rely on her to jump the obstacles. Physically, Katie was healed after a nasty fall during a jumping competition, but her depth perception and timing were off, so she would need a horse with courage,

stamina and a love of jumping. While standing next to a show ring in Holland, Katie watched a bay mare jump a course with a Dutch rider. She was very impressed with the horse’s eagerness and form. To Katie, the mare soared over the obstacles as if she had wings. After Katie watched the pair finish the course with no faults, she knew

Revised By Author, Sharon Miner From Her Book

Beloved Sport Horses

this mare would be the horse to help her compete again. Katie Monahan was a horse lover from her earliest memories even though her parents did not ride. Born in Illinois, the family moved to Michigan when she was seven years old. “It was like I was born in the saddle,”

explained Katie. “My first word was horse, even before mommy or daddy.” She lived across from the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club and spent most of her free time as a youngster there, learning about horses. At 15, she won the Maclay Finals at the National Horse Show. With George Morris as her mentor, she was one of the best riders in the American Grand Prix circuit in the 1980’s. In 1983, she rode two horses, Jethro and Noren, in the Jumper Classic at Lake Placid Horse Show and won both first and second place with them. Only four of the 50 horses entered made it to the jump off, and both of Katie’s horses had clear second rounds with Jethro having the quickest time. Katie was named the Rider of the Year three times by the Federation Equestre International. In 1986, Katie was the Gold Medal World Champion. She was a member of the U.S. Equestrian Team and won numerous classes in Show Jumping Grand Prix events in Europe. While at a horse show in Virginia in 1984, Katie met Henri Prudent, a Grand Prix Show Jumping competitor from France. He knew no English but was familiar with Noren, and struck up a conversation with Katie who was grateful for her high school French lessons. The two were married in 1986 and their son, Adam, was born in 1990. Later that year she had her accident. On the brink of death, Katie survived brain surgery, but she had a long recovery with many physical and mental setbacks. When Katie was able to ride again, she needed a mount that would help her navigate the show jumping courses and she found the perfect match in the mare named Belladonna that she had watched in Holland. During her first ride on the mare, Katie knew the horse was meant for her. “Belladonna was a fantastic jumper and I thought she would be a real winner,” said Katie. The Dutch Warmblood, called Bella for short, had a lot of Arabian in her background. When Katie arranged to purchase Bella, the mare didn’t pass the vet check due to bone chips. “I bought her anyway,” added Katie. “I figured that if she jumped sound at 11 years of age, she would stay sound.”

Katie shipped the horse to her Plain Bay Farm in Middleburg, Virginia and began riding and showing the mare. But it wasn’t always easy. Riding was much harder for Katie after her head injury. Bella jumped great when Katie rode correctly, but the Dutch horse didn’t hesitate to toss her off if a mistake was made. “Bella was a little bit of a stinker if I rode her too deep,” said Katie. “If I was too close to the jump she let me know I was wrong and would throw me off her back in an instant. But rather than giving up, Bella pushed me to keep at it. She made me strive for excellence.” After a decade of competing on Bella, the mare won seven cars and a million dollars for Katie. But, that wasn’t the end to Bella’s show career. The mare then became the mount for Katie’s son, Adam, who competed on her in the Junior Division. And when Bella was finally retired from the show ring, her filly named Si Bella now continues her legacy. On February 6, 2015, Si Bella and Adam Prudent entered the $34,000 WEF Challenge Cup during week five. The pair finished in 6th place out of 78!

HITS

AAAAAAA Thomas G. Struzzieri On The Horizion For HITS HITS, Inc. is known for producing the greatest horse shows in the United States. The upstate New York-based company has grown the sport and given hunters and jumpers the opportunity to compete domestically at the highest level of competition. HITS was developed by Long Island native, Thomas G. Struzzieri, who remains president and chief executive of HITS. Struzzieri has been involved in the horse world for the majority of his life, training hunter/jumper horses for several years and also producing major shows. In 1982, he broadened his horizons and produced his first out-of-state-show in Gainesville, Florida, starting Horse Shows In The Sun,

By Hope Sickler which would later be shortened to HITS. HITS has grown into a nationwide company since its inception, with world-class hunter-jumper circuits in California, Florida, Arizona, New York and Virginia. The HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping includes the three richest Grand Prix in the country: the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix in Thermal, California, the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix in Ocala, Florida, and the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix CSI5*, presented by Wells Fargo, in Saugerties, New York. CSI-5* Events This January, HITS announced that the Federation Equestre Internationale

(FEI) had approved the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix, presented by Wells Fargo, in September as a CSI-5* event. The prize money and FEI rating of this event should easily categorize it as the highest-ranked class in the United States this year. A total of 50 riders will be competing in this particular event on Sunday, September 6, at HITS-onthe-Hudson, following a $34,000 qualifying class on Thursday, September 3. (The week’s events will be webcast live, so be sure to watch the action on HitsShows.com.) But that’s just the beginning. HITS will host a total of four CSI-5* events, including Saugerties, as part of its CSI5* Tour 2015/2016. The other CSI-5*

events include: FEI CSI-5* Week & $350,000 Grand Prix at National Sunshine Series II in Thermal, California, November 4-8, 2015; FEI CSI-5* Week & $350,000 Grand Prix (pending approval) at HITS Desert Circuit III on February 2-7, 2016; and the FEI CSI-5* Week & $350,000 Grand Prix (Pending Approval) at the Ocala Tournament on March 1-6, 2016. $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derbies HITS has also recently announced four $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derbies to take place at its circuits this year and next as part of the 2015-

ESI PHOTOGRAPHY

2016 USHJA International Hunter Derby series. USHJA International Hunter Derbies highlight the tradition of the longstanding hunter discipline. HITS is hosting four of these derbies – with total prize purses of $100,000 each – in affirmation of its commitment to hunters, much like its offering of four FEI CSI-5* events for jumpers. HITS’ four new $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derbies will take place at the following shows: National Sunshine Series II, November 4 – 8, 2015, in Thermal, California; The Ocala Masters in Ocala, Florida, February 23-28, 2016 (pending final approval); Desert Circuit VIII, in Thermal, March 15-20, 2016 (pending approval); and the NY Horse & Pony Show (VI) on August 3-7, 2016 (pending approval). Struzzieri is described as a motivational and ambitious innovator in the sport of show jumping. He has said his motive in creating HITS was to offer inclusive horse

shows that offer the best possible competition, facilities and professional operations. HITS has also expanded into endurance sports, with the birth of HITS Running Festivals and the HITS Triathlon Series. Many would agree that HITS has gone above and beyond Struzzieri’s original vision!

A New Revolution in Feminine Rejuvenation Why Vaginal Rejuvenation? For many years, I have been treating women with enlarged labia (the lips of the vagina). The most frequent complaints have been irritation of the labia minora (inner lips) with tight fitting clothes (jeans, yoga pants, and swim wear), activities like horseback riding, bicycling, sexual intercourse, as well as cosmetic concerns of labia minora (inner lips) protruding beyond labia majora. (outer lips) The surgical reduction of the labia minora provides relief from irritation and self-consciousness during intimacy. Another issue for some women has also been the appearance of prominent labia majora when wearing tight fitting clothing (“Camel Toe). The surgical options for reducing the labia work very well and the results have provided relief and gratification for the women who have undergone these procedures. Recently, I was introduced to a

revolutionary new technology for vaginal rejuvenation; ThermiVa What is even more amazing about ThemiVa is that is can reduce the labia majora and labia minora, clitoral hood excess, tightens the vagina and enhances the G-Spot in a half-hour procedure. Many women with mild urinary stress incontinence have also noticed improvement. Women have reported improved lubrication and increased sexual pleasure after ThermiVa treatments. The patients I have treated have said that the half-hour treatment is pleasant or even pleasurable: the gentle heating of the tissues feels similar to a hot stone massage. There is truly nothing that compares with ThermiVa in accomplishing so much and so comfortably. For example, surgical labiaplasty (reduction of labia minora) requires local anesthetic and 6 weeks before

resuming sexual intercourse or other activities that would irritate the delicate tissues as they heal. The newest laser procedures may produce drainage and still require 4 days abstaining from sexual intercourse. So if you have had any discomfort from prominent labia, vaginal laxity after childbirth or decreased intimate pleasure, call our office to schedule your ThermiVa rejuvenation. With no recovery time needed after treatment, ThermiVa is an excellent procedure to do in the summer time; Call today! -Dr. Zwiebel, MD, DMD FACS
