Celebrating the leading lights of Britain
I
t is with great pleasure that we are hosting the Asian Voice Political and Public Life Awards in the House of Commons for the 8th time, joined by such distinguished guests. The recipients of these awards are well recognised and respected in their fields, such as members of the Parliament, Peers, Public Servants and also people with Her Majesty's honour. The Asian Voice Political and Public Life Awards are unique as our readers and supporters carefully select and nominate people from all corners of the world, representing different ethnicities and religious backgrounds. The selection of winners in each category depends entirely upon an independent panel of judges, who choose the most deserving candidates from hundreds of nominees. I extend my warm wishes to all of you, who are receiving the awards today. May you continue to achieve even higher levels of public acclaim for your noteworthy contributions to our country. For those who are not included, may you be duly honoured in the near future. I would particularly like to thank Rt Hon Keith Vaz, MP and the panel of judges for making these awards such a success. I also must appreciate the contribution of our supporters, readers and the hard working team of ABPL, for making this award increasingly popular every year. CB Patel Publisher/Editor

Outstanding Achievers
O
n behalf of the panel of judges, I am delighted to welcome you to the eighth annual Asian Voice Political and Public Life Awards at the House of Commons. Founded decades ago by the doyen of British Asian Publishing, the legendary CB Patel, the Asian Voice newspaper has the largest readership amongst the Asian community in Britain. It has been at the forefront of ensuring that the issues of concern to Britain’s glorious ethnic minority communities are brought into the public domain. The paper is one of a number of outlets that bridge the gap between communities in Britain. At least 5 million BME people reads one of these newspapers each week. The British Asian community has made a great contribution to our country. We are key stakeholders in politics, industry, business and even showbusiness. Tonight we celebrate the accomplishments of a few of them. The uniqueness of these awards is that they are held in the mother of Parliaments and that they honour and recognise political figures who have really impressed the British Asian community. They also celebrate Asian talent of those in the public and political sphere outside of Westminster. This year’s rollcall of senior political figures include the Rt Hon George Osborne MP, who as Chancellor of the Exchequer has the job of piloting us through the worst recession of this generation; Rt Hon Rosie Winterton MP who as Opposition Chief Whip has proved adept at the unenviable task of keeping in line the 256 Labour MPs in the House of Commons; and newly appointed Minister for Crime Prevention Norman Baker, who has brought vast knowledge and new ideas to the Home Office. These awards also celebrate the new class of political talent, such as Nicola Blackwood MP, who has championed the plight of women and young girls who have been sexually groomed. We will also recognise the public figures who have made this year special. Including Metro Bank and its CEO Craig Donaldson, who has driven forward Britain’s first new High Street bank for a century. I hope the evening will be remembered as one where we celebrated achievement but also looked to the future. We remain citizens of the most multicultural country in the world and you tonight are a mirror of that world. Rt. Hon Keith Vaz MP
