ABQ Sports magazine P.O.Box 15981 • Rio Rancho, NM 87174 1.855.567.SPORT (7678) abqsportsmag.com

An Albuquerque college student is counting down the days to Rio. Nick Slade has qualified to compete this September at the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro in long jump. During his prep days he led the Academy Chargers to a state championship. Describing himself as a person who struggled with self-image as a youth, he is now set to compete on an international stage. Learn more about Nick, inside.

Slade isn’t the only New Mexican headed to Rio. Former Lobo and record-setting NCAA runner Courtney Frerichs stunned the crowds with her stupendous performance in the last moments of the steeplechase at the Olympic Team Trials. And a soldier who hails from Roswell will also be realizing his dream of being part of Team USA. The modern pentathlon is a grueling event. Nathan Schrimsher won one of the components at the Trials, details coming up.

ALBUQUERQUE ACADEMY GRAD HEADS TO RIO DE JANEIRO

6 Summer 2016

Sometimes, it comes down to timing. Nick Slade, former Albuquerque Academy soccer and track & field standout, had never competed in a Paralympic competition. A few months ago he was contacted by Cathy Sellers, a high performance director for Paralympics. As a result, Slade entered the long jump at the Great Lakes Regional Games in Lake Forrest, IL in June. Two weeks later, he found himself at the Paralympic qualifier in Charlotte, North Carolina, and now, he’s headed to Rio. Slade’s qualifying jump came in at 6.63m, but he’s jumped farther - 6.90m at the qualifier for the Paralympic Trials - he says he has more in him and is prepared to show it. He is classified as a T47, defined as an ‘upper limb deficiency, impaired muscle power or impaired range of movement’. He’s missing right hand as a result of the umbilical cord wrapping around his arm in utero and not developing properly. Slade says that caused him to struggle with self-image. He’s dealt with that on his own. The exercise has helped. “Everyday I get up and run before the sun comes up,” says Slade, “it’s like therapy. Then I go to Valley High School and run faster, or sprint. I also lift weights everyday. I practice my jumping and run through technique two or three days a week, for over an hour.” His coach is Ken Brown, Albuquerque Academy hurdles coach.

“One of the most coachable athletes I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with,” says Brown. “He just gets it. You can tell him what to do and he goes out 100%. As coaches we make a lot of suggestions. Nick is one of those athletes who can compete anywhere, anytime, against any group. I think it’s well deserved. If he makes the most of it, I think it will open doors for him to compete at the collegiate level, at the very least. I’m very proud for him, he’s worked very hard.” As a senior during the 2014-15 at the prep season Slade was the state’s #1 hurdler and long jumper, the leading T&F point-getter for the Academy, state team track champ and a monster triple jumper. In soccer he earned 1st Team AllState, All-Metro First Team (forward) and District Player of the Year. Slade’s inspiration? His father. “I owe all my success in my Paralympic endeavors to my track coaches at Albuquerque Academy and my parents. My three coaches, Kedge (head coach), Trey (sprint coach), and Cochren (the jumps coach) taught me everything I know in track and field. It was a pleasure to work with them last track season. As for my parents, their sacrifices are endless... I really can’t say thank you enough to my friends, family, and coaches. I hope I make everyone proud when the time comes around.”

Marty Saiz

The Paralympic Games commence at the end of the Olympic Games, utilizing many of the same venues. Slade didn’t compete for UNM this past year but hopes to compete for the Lobos this coming track season. He’s enrolled as a sophomore for the fall, studying economics and plans for a future in banking. abqsportsmag.com • 7

New Mexico Sports Hall Fame

Honoring New Mexico Sports Heroes and Raising Money for Scholarships STORY BY: MARTY SAIZ, NMSHOF President Photos by: Marty Saiz & Elliot Madriss

T

he New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame had a successful 43rd annual banquet as part of its first-ever Induction Celebration Weekend in April. The event raised $20,000 for ALS and scholarships for senior student-athletes. The goal for 2017 is to raise $100,000. 40 companies partnered with NMSHOF for two VIP Dinners, the Charity Golf Classic at Twin Warriors Golf Course, plus the Induction Banquet. Nearly 500 attended the banquet, witness to the largest class inducted to date: Ray Birmingham, Flo Valdez, Carla Garrett, Henry Tafoya, Sam Lacey, Luc Longley, Eric Roanhaus and Marv Sanders.

Marty Saiz, Board President and High School Senior Scholarship Recipients, Isaac Maldonado of Cibola High School, Lauren Wilmert of Volcano Vista High School, Ariel Roybal of Albuquerque High School and Board Member, Gene Pino.

We are currently soliciting nominations from the public for deserving individuals who meet the Hall of Fame criteria, the deadline is September 30th. You can review the criteria and nominate at our website - www.nmshof.com. We currently have 60+ candidates who have officially been nominated online. The earlier you nominate you favorite candidate the more time the nomination committee has to evaluate and review the file of the candidate. The nomination committee will select the top 15-20 candidates by October 12th. Then it’s your turn - the public will vote on who should be inducted into the Hall of Fame - voting occurs in September. You may actually vote twice via a direct vote on the NMSHOF website and by ‘liking’ your favorite candidate on the NMSHOF Facebook page.

The NMSHOF is also looking for companies that want to be a partner in the 2017 Induction Celebration Weekend. Events run April 7-9, including a VIP Welcome Dinner; the 2nd Annual Charity Golf Classic at Twin Warriors and our Induction Reception and Banquet at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Call Marty Saiz at 505-350-5356 if you want to be a partner. We expect to fill the 50 partnership spots by September 1st, due to this year’s success. Let’s work together to make a positive difference in athletics in New Mexico and help honor our New Mexico Sports Heroes!

steeplechase

This former Lobo had a spectacular 2nd place finish at the Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Oregon July 7 after running 5th for most of the 3,000 meter race. A strong, late-race kick during the last 400 meters moved her from 4th to 2nd, securing her place on Team USA. Frerichs’ 9:20.92 is a personal best, nearly four seconds faster than her NCAA title record run last month. She is the current NCAA champion and record holder. Her qualifying time ranks her as the fourth fastest in American Steeplechase history. She is the seventh UNM track & field athlete to qualify for an Olympic team, and the first Lobo female. Steeplechase is a hazardous event with 28 barriers, seven of which are over water. This 23-year old always dreamed of competing in the Olympics, but her dreams revolved around gymnastics before moving to steeplechase. Since graduating from UNM she has turned pro, running with the Bowerman Track Club. Frerichs takes on an impressive international field, with the first round of the steeplechase set for August 13 in Rio De Janeiro.

13-year Salter won the July 4th Blue Ribbon 5k Run in Silverton Colorado, beating all females, regardless of age, with a time of 23.01. More than 50 runners competed in the 5k, which was run at altitude and included some challenging hills.

Futey is one of the top club runners in the nation and is now turning to some ultra-distance running. This spring Futey was the youngest competitor in this year’s 50k, running more than 33 miles in 8 hours 58 minutes. As a 14-year old he already has a stash of gold medals in mid distance and cross country. He’s run La Luz four times, winning his age group last year in 1 hour 56 minutes. Luke will run for Cleveland High this fall.

10 Summer 2016

Duty, honor, country. Values Schrimsher holds dear as a soldier with the US Army. Those same principles are at the core of his bid for an Olympic medal, as this Roswell native prepares to compete in an event that includes fencing, a 200m freestyle swim, show jumping (horse), pistol shooting and a 3200m cross country run. Schrimsher is the first athlete to qualify for the 2016 Olympic games after finishing third at the Pan American Games in Toronto in 2015. Each nation is allowed to qualify two males and two females in this event. Schrimsher had the best qualifying time in the swimming component at 2:00.59 and is ranked number 59 in the world. Schrimsher is stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado where he is part of the US Army Installation Management Command World Class Athlete program.

is sudden death came as a shock to Rams baseball. The team, and Sanchez’s family honored him where they say he most loved to spend his time - inside the Rio Rancho baseball stadium. It was there that Coach Sanchez’s remains were carried and the community said their goodbyes. He died just days after being placed in a medically induced coma, after complications related to his pancreas. Coach Sanchez was part of the Rams coaching staff for more than a dozen years and on board for Rio Rancho’s three state championships. Chavez was named the 2016 District 1-6A Coach of the Year. He is survived by his children Aleq and Samantha, and his mother Loretta. 12 Summer 2016
