DESIGN A SPACE TO EXPERIENCE AN ELEMENT OF NATURE

The objective was to design a space where one can experience an element of nature such as sun, wind , air and earth. I chose to design a space where one can experience ‘sun’. Light and shadows are the best allies to experience the beauty of sun.

01

A blank wall casts a plain shadow, but a wall with patterns casts intricate shadows. The shadows keep changing along the day forming different angles.

One must experience shadow so that to fully appreciate the beauty of light. Therefore a prototype model was built with basic forms and experimented in sunlight. This gave ideas to move forward to design a more suitable space.

RURAL DOCUMENTATION AND DESIGN

The objective was to document a rural settlement. Different techniques were equipped to document the life and the settlements. A design proposal was given to address the problems of the people.

04

The documentation was a group work, and the settlement we documented was Kiliyur. It is 28km from Tiruchirappalli. We used Participatory Role Appraisal (PRA) techniques to document. That included the people helping us to map their settlements.

05

The design proposal was to build houses for five families. They have their own occupation. Some needed storage areas for their harvest products. Some needed cow sheds for their cattles.

Elevation

Thinnai spaces were given which promotes the social activity. Rain water harvesting is promoted by giving sheds at the side of the house.

DESIGN AN EXHIBITION TO ACCOMODATE TWO EXHIBITS IN A 16x16x9 MODULE

The objective was to create a flexible exhibition design in a 16 x 16 x 9 module. There should be two exhibits, which can happen separately or together. I choose to exhibit ‘Book’ and ‘Cycle’ in the module. The challenge was to achieve the flexibility to accomodate the two exhibits in the same module.

07

The site given was ST. John Vestry School ground, Trichy. The site area was 5.38 acres. The module’s plot was to be carefully selected so that it can be easily accessed.

The form of the building was important as it need to be aesthetically pleasing because of its function as a exhibition.

The idea was to identify common points of the objects of the exhibits and converting it to a frame of the module and then wrap it around a cube.

08

To exhibit books, a shelf was made to fit in five rows of books. This was done on both sides of the shelves.

Exploded view To exhibit cycles, I decided to vertically mount them. That was done by fixing cycle hook fixtures on the side of the book module.

DESIGN CENTER

A

LEARNING

The objective was to design a center for learning for students from kindergarten to higher secondary. The design should fulfill the required amenities of a learning center and provide good environment for learning.

10

Connectivity - The whole space making evolved from this word. To connect students, I provided pockets of landscapes at the junctions. A big tree can grab the attention of a wandering mind rather than the voice of the teacher.

The other idea was to provide common interactive classes which are semi open and less formal. This would be comfortable rather than a class which is more closed and formal.

Views showing the connectivity.

Ground floor plan

First floor plan

The center has two floors. The ground floor consists of individual classrooms. The upper floor has laboratories. It has two entries. The back entry leads to to the cycle parking area. It has mini play grounds for physical fitness. They also have a quiet reading space, a small canteen and a stationery shop.
