What is a gerund? A gerund is a verb in “-ing” form that is used as a noun. It becomes the subject or object of a sentence. Gerunds may be affirmative or negative. Negatives are formed by putting not before the -ing form. All kind of gerunds depend on the “ing” Word location.

EXAMPLES When used as a subject  Swimming is excellent exercise.  Drinking too much coffee gives him a headache.  Eating too quickly gave him an upset stomach.  Not doing his homework caused him to fail the test.

When used as a noun  He dislikes doing homework.  The manager suggested having our meeting away from the office.  He proposed meeting in a restaurant.  I look forward to seeing you soon.  She's worried about missing her bus.  Are you tired of studying?  She's depressed about not passing the test.

When used as a complement  His hobby is playing computer games.  My least favorite chore is cleaning the bathroom.  His problem is not coming to class on time.

When used as a circumstantial complement  He parked his bike there.  They bought pizza for dinner.  That year we worked hard

What is an infinitive? An infinitive is made up of “to + verb” and is also used as a subject or object in a sentence, though much less commonly as a subject.

EXAMPLES As a subject  To understand required madurity and acceptance.  To sleep is the only thing she wants.  As an object:  I hate to go.  She doesn’t like to lose.

Also in negative  I promised her not to fight with her brother anymore.  She told me not to go to the cinema yesterday.
