EDITOR'S NOTE
Boston & Bangalore Bombing Shows Recurring Terror Trend Terrorism is on prowl again. The recent cowardly bombing at the Boston Marathon and Bangalore shows that global threat of terrorism is far from over. It is interesting to note that high tech electronic security systems were of great help in nabbing Boston Bombing suspects. After a homeowner informed Boston Police, helicopters hovered through the dark night air searching for Boston Marathon bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. He was found calmly hiding in a tarp-covered boat in the back yard of a Massachusetts resident, police were able to use FLIR’s infrared equipment to discover a live, human moving within the boat, identified as Tsarnaev. In case of Boston Bombing nobody imagined that Chechen nationals will be used. In the Bangalore Bombing a former convict of Coimbatore Blast Case was caught. A former member of the banned Al Umma, S Kitchan Buhari (43),who had served 10 year sentence in jail. It only shows another intelligence failure on Karnataka police’s part. We live in an era infested by terror and insecurity. At a time when terrorism is spreading its tentacles, its time that India’s intelligence agencies, police and Anti –terror mechanism should kept on a high alert. We need to tackle terrorism with zero tolerance policy. We all need to practice resilience at all times. The futuristic concept of smart cities is catching up in India. The future of new age India lies in Smart Cities. There are 12 Smart Cities currently in different stages of development in India. In this issue our focus in the vertical market is “Smart Cities”. We are exploring how security majors are adding value by providing intelligent security and automation solutions. In “Product Exploration” Section we are discussing the rise of NVRs. The way DVRs wiped out the VCRs. In the same manner NVRs are taking over the DVR market. The onward march of technology is on and NVR is surely the next big thing. In the “Fire Secure” section we are exploring new range of smoke detectors, which are aesthetically designed to suit the fire safety requirements without compromising the interiors. In a&s India’s previous issue on Airport security was well received. Our upcoming issues will be focusing on new products and companies to highlight their presence. a&s India is doing a special coverage on Secutech-2013, Taipei to share the update. Secutech India 2013, Excellent Event.
Booming Security Industry
Enlightening Content
Secutech India 2013 was a very excellent event, this year, with a great number of footfalls, all top brands, and fine products, notable names of the security industry had crowds engulfing the venue. This professional exhibition and conference had a huge number of products and solutions which covered almost all kind of requirements for the security segment. Exhibition gave me a lot of exploration to the international inventions and products. I would love to be the part of this event every year and to explore new products and other innovations. The most attractive part was the solutions theme. The Hikvision booth had city surveillance solutions, traffic solutions and atm solutions, which gave a clear idea about the scope of security solutions.
Security was just a small segment, where people hardly were aware of the technologies into it. a&s India has come up with an excellent view of the growth into the security industry. Different high end products, top brands and the participation of all the top notch companies and brands have made it more attractive. Different views and thoughts coming up by the great industrialists into the security segment have been explored into this magazine; this has made the growth of security into the next level. Combating technology to real life threats has simplified the fear of losing peoples lives. It is drastically growing up to the next level.
Being a regular reader of a&s India, this issue also did not disappoint me .We all know how important Security at Airports should be. Living in an age where technology is booming, it’s a plus and minus point. Where technology is helping securing places it’s also giving a chance to people who want to breach security. Secutech India 2013 being an exhibition for security lovers was a great success. Secutech India 2013 was a very excellent event, this year, with a great number of footfalls; the stalwarts of the industry were present. I am waiting for another such issue of this magazine.
Shanta Kamath, New Delhi. Jimson James, Panjim.
Harshit Patel, Bangalore.
Friendly Budget Every individual on the initial stage of the growing security industry is concerned about their security risks and the lack of the security infrastructure. People rarely get to know about the budget involved and utilized into this segment. a&s India has come up with an excellent story and feature on union budget related to security industry. It explores a lot of information as this segment is important for the growth of our security industry. This magazine is doing a good job by providing the information about all the segments related to security.
Airport Security The April issue of a&s India has beautifully kept the airport security into the frame. Where security is an essential part everywhere may it be on land or in the air, airport securities has hugely improved. All the high end products and the methods utilized in this sector are as equal as the real life security. When it comes to the security, India now goes hand in hand with the other nations. I am waiting for the next issue with another such article related to the growth in the security industry.

Hikvision’s EXIR technology permits uniform IR illumination. This eliminates traditional LED lens issues, such as over-exposure at the center of images, and darker areas at corners
“
30% increase in illuminant efficiency over traditional LED array technology. Furthermore, compared to a traditional light extraction of 750mV, EXIR offers 1050mV, resulting in stronger light for long-range visibility usage. Evolutionary rectangular-shaped lenses for better light usage to make the most out of IR LED light, Hikvision EXIR allows cameras to produce LED light in the form of a rectangle in order to fit a screen’s normal size (4:3 or 16:9). This additionally helps improve LED utilization efficiency and reduce light pollution in the surrounding environment.Better luminance uniformity, excellent heat dissipation, longer lifespan, and greater energy savings are but a few of the benefits that Hikvision EXIR brings.

Smart Range of Smoke Detectors Fire protection is essential in modern life. Most of the time fire protection remains unused. Conventional fire detectors tend to be quite conspicuous. That’s where the new range of smoke detector by BOSCH known as 500 Series comes in. he Bosch 520 series is a totally new concept. The features are unique; it is ultra-slim and lies flush with the ceiling – a distinct advantage, which does not destroy the appearance of attractive rooms. Better aesthetics, better detection, less costs
The fact that there is no optical chamber inside the smoke detectors 500 Series means it does not protrude from the ceiling. The smooth surface of the detector does not gather the usual visible dirt in rooms with high dust build-up, which makes it easy to clean and saves service time and costs. The level of dirt build-up is continuously measured. When the unit needs to be 32

cleaned; a trouble signal beeps which indicates its maintenance. The detector can be exchanged utilizing the new push/ remove system if the service is needed with minimal effort. Powerful protection, the detector is extremely reliable, as the sensors monitor two independent light areas in open space. The Bosch 520 series is a scattered-light fire detection system with dual detection area. The detector is extremely reliable, as the sensors monitor two independent light areas in open space. The invisible detector is also available as a multi-sensor detector with carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensor. This combination of scatteredlight sensor and CO gas sensor allows alarms to be evaluated using state-of-
the-art signal processing methods. This greatly decreases the likelihood of false alarms and increases the number of possible applications since this detector even works well in environments that are unsuitable for standard photoelectric detectors. Security network capability, installation options and accessories
The smoke detector Bosch 520 series can be directly connected to the Local Security Network (LSN) and is also available as conventional version. Both flush mount and surface mount is available. All of these options are easy to install and feature the integrated strain-relief system for wiring.

Which Method is Better?
Both ionization and photoelectric detectors are effective smoke sensors. Both types of smoke detectors must pass the same test to be certified as UL smoke detectors. Ionization detectors respond more quickly to flaming fires with smaller combustion particles; photoelectric detectors respond more quickly to smoldering fires. In either type of detector, steam or high humidity can lead to condensation on the circuit board and sensor, causing the alarm to sound. Ionization detectors are less expensive than photoelectric detectors, but some users purposely disable them because they are more likely to sound an alarm from normal cooking due to their sensitivity to minute smoke particles. However, ionization detectors have a degree of built-in security not inherent to photoelectric detectors. When the battery starts to fail in an ionization detector, the ion current falls and the alarm sounds, warning that it is time to change the battery before the detector becomes ineffective. Back-up batteries may be used for photoelectric detectors. Besides BOSCH and the other existing players, global security and fire safety major, System Sensor also introduced S300 range of smoke detectors. The Series 300 acts conventionally and thinks intelligently. With the introduction of the Series 300, there is a much better choice between conventional and analogue addressable systems in the small to mid-size installation, enabling many of the features of a full analogue
addressable system to be provided in a lower cost conventional system. The new features in S300 have been combined to increase the ability of the fire detection system to give greater protection to a building and its occupants by reacting more swiftly to an incipient fire without false and nuisance alarms also rising, the release further noted. The choice of fire system technology is relatively straightforward at the two extremes; conventional systems are normally more than adequate in small installations, while analogue addressable systems are the norm in large premises. The Series 300 is the
first conventional detector from a major detector manufacturer to incorporate intelligence in the head, a development that is likely to redefine the conventional detector landscape. The on board intelligence provides users and installers with features and capabilities previously only found in more complex analogue addressable detectors. As far as the panel is concerned, the detector is perfectly standard; no special interface is required, the Series 300 is fully compatible with most popular control panels from the major manufacturers, the statement added.

advanced algorithms that dynamically adjust detection parameters to respond to the inputs from the sensors, enabling instant response as ambient conditions change. The program changes sensor thresholds, sensor gain, time, delays, and combinations, sampling rates and averaging rates. This approach of reducing false alarm conditions would result in saving time and cost and also help in case of actual fire instance by providing timely alarms thus resulting in human intervention for corrective action.
and Evolutions
Smoke Detectors play a very critical role in helping detect fire at incipient stage i.e. “Smoke detectors provide early warning before actual fire takes place and provides sufficient time for evacuation, resulting in more life saved compared with the case of no smoke detectors at all and the primary purpose is to save Human Lives & Property. Notifer by Honeywell has been at the forefront of introducing the latest in fire technology over the years and smoke detector of the future shall be faster in sensing and will have multiple sensing technologies to accommodate all types of smoke. Various new range of smoke detectors being developed by Notifier are equipped with latest and advance algorithms which are capable of providing credible solution by differentiating various parameter of smoke, temperature, gas, Flame etc and provide accurate data/information’ said Sharad Yadav, Sales Leader, Notifier India. Effects of Smoke Detectors in Case of Fire
The choice of technology becomes critically important when it comes to safe guarding assets and most important of all life from fire hazards. There are a number of fire detection devices available in the market which can be 34

used depending upon the application but in most of the cases if the device is not selected appropriately it would result in instances where false alarms occur due to inability of differentiating an actual smoke from dust or vapors also there would be delay in detection of smoke thus resulting in loss of precious seconds that might be helpful in saving life and assets. At Notifier, the smoke detection technology has evolved tremendously over the years and we have developed advanced acclimate detectors which work on unique algorithms which help reduce the frequency of false alarms and also helps the detector to acclimatize with the ambient environment which in turns minimizes false alarm and also reduces the amount of human intervention for programming the detectors every now and then. Best Choices and Reliability in Terms of Smoke Alarms
Smoke detector technology can be categorized into two head, conventional and addressable type detectors. The choice of fire system technology is relatively straightforward at the two extremes; conventional systems are normally more than adequate in small installations, while analogue addressable systems are the norm in large premises. The choice between a conventional vs. an addressable is purely dependent on the scope and investment of the project. While a conventional detection technology would serve the basic purpose of detecting a fire instance and giving an alarm but it would not be able to give critical data/info on the exact location of the fire. Historically, a conventional smoke detector has behaved very much as a simple on-

off switch with a single, factory-preset alarm threshold. It was impossible to characterize the device to its location by adjusting the threshold, and, in reality, the only lower sensitivity option was a fixed or rate of rise thermal device. The recent past has seen development effort from the majority of smoke detector manufacturers concentrated on their analogue addressable product ranges. Analogue addressable fire systems offer distinct advantages over conventional ones, particularly in larger and more complex installations, where the installer, the building’s occupants and the emergency services all benefit from the inherent sophistication and consequent increased functionality and discriminatory abilities of the analogue addressable system which in plain simple terms would mean a system which would eventually give pin
point location of the actual fire alarm. The Specialty of Dual Sensing Smoke Alarms
A dual sensing smoke alarm typically consists of a photoelectric and thermal detector technology housed in one detector. The photo-thermal detector is a true multi-sensor unit; the alarm signals from both the optical and the thermal sensors are continually monitored by the internal processor, with an alarm condition only being communicated to the panel after interrogation and analysis of both signals. While multi criteria detectors have been produced in the past but at Notifier the technology has been taken to another step altogether with its Acclimate and Coptir range of detectors, while Acclimate works on dual sensors to identify
smoke whereas Coptir combines four separate sensing elements in one unit i.e. photoelectric chamber senses airborne particulate for smoke detection, electrochemical cell technology monitors carbon monoxide (CO) produced by smoldering fires, infrared (IR) sensing measures ambient light levels and flame signatures, and thermal detection monitors temperature. The integration of continual monitoring for all four major elements of a fire has enabled Notifier to create a detector that responds more quickly to an actual fire with the highest immunity to nuisances. This advanced multi-criteria detector normally operates at a high immunity level and changes to become very sensitive to fires as soon as fire characteristics are sensed. In this way, nuisances are monitored and ignored, reducing false alarms.

Smart Cities: The Future of New Age India New Age India is developing with over a dozen smart cities projects. These proposed Smart Cities will be equipped with more intelligent and evolved infrastructure, communication and transportation systems. Establishing two smart cities in each of India’s 28 states is the goal of the wide-ranging project introduced by the Indian government to inject smart technology into cities. a&s India explores the Smart Cities trend by interacting with key stakeholders. T
he Smart Cities trend is gaining momentum in India. The plans for seven new cities along the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) have been finalised and work on two new smart industrial cities at Dholera in Gujarat and Shendra Bidkin in Maharashtra would start in the next financial year. The DMIC project has made rapid progress. The Plans for seven new cities have been finalised and work on two new smart industrial cities will start during 2013-14. The plans were being prepared by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for Chennai-Bengalore industrial corridor. The corridor will be developed in collaboration with the governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The preparatory work had also

started on another corridor between Bangalore and Mumbai. According to a United Nations report, India’s population currently encompasses about 1.2 billion people and is expected to grow by another 300 million within the next couple of decades. With cities generating two-thirds of the country’s economic output, an increasing number of Indians are leaving rural areas to seek employment in cities, relying on an efficient urban infrastructure. By 2030 it is predicted that 68 Indian cities will each have more than one million inhabitants, and six megacities, more than ten million each. Key Considerations
Life as we know is fast evolving and we have come a long way since the days of early human establishments and so has the way cities of the world
are constructed. In India, over the last decade we have noticed a huge rush in terms of urbanization and this in recent times has resulted in a string of high end and sophisticated ways cities are made. “One of the key facts being considered while building a smart city is how efficient the city is in itself terms of how different systems in a building communicate with each other,” said Amit Bhardwaj, Sales Leader ESSER, India. The other consideration are,”are the system fast enough to provide time for reaction and human intervention , how efficient are the multi layer communication, how third party systems interact. To put this picture in perspective one can look at the broader consideration as well which is about better standards of living, security and safety for life and property,” pointed out Amit Bharadwaj.
Network Infrastructure
Network infrastructures are a critical part of every project no matter how big or small the projects are. “In a project such as the smart city project of Gujarat i.e. Gift City, would have several buildings and every building would have multiple systems interlinked with each other. For the whole system to work flawlessly it has to be housed on a state of the art network infrastructure so that during instances such as fire, security breach etc the systems can raise an alarm for human intervention and thus help save life and property,” observed Amit Bharadwaj. Community SERVICES
Smart cities of today are designed in such a way that it is a self sustaining environment with various community services being housed in the entire complex itself. “As a matter of fact these cities are built in such a fashion wherein one does not need to go out of the city for availing any amenities, from basic services such as Hospital, Schools, Sports complex, Business Centre etc all build up in the city itself,” informed Amit Bharadwaj.
all and most prime concern was safety of life and property. No two fires are alike, the course and velocity of propagation are dependent on environmental condition and the state of the flammable material. A rule of thumb: the faster a fire is detected, the faster it is controllable and the more quickly more people can be warned and evacuated. A fire detector should therefore be perfectly matched with its respective on-site condition so that fire are recognized earlier and distinguished more reliably from disturbance variables. ESSER designed fire alarm systems have the highest standards even in the most challenging conditions, with its O2T technology, which has two integrated optical smoke sensors with different scatter angles and additional heat sensor provides for optimum detection of light and dark smoke and prevent false alarms from being triggered. The entire system of detectors and devices was designed with inbuilt isolators to help reduce the case of entire system failure even if one of the devices in the system malfunction or develops any technical snag. This technology allows the detector to be isolated without causing problem to the remaining system. Another challenge like in case any other

system is that fire alarm system should also be designed keeping in mind the scalability of the system in future. Esser designed systems provide a hassle free integration and networking option by deploying a multi protocol gateway to communicate with third party integrations such as BMS, CCTV, PA system etc. Esser also deployed technologically advanced networking capability wherein 31 panels can be networked in a node which is either peer to peer or master slave configuration. According to Amit Bharadwaj,”One of the biggest and most prestigious projects of Gujarat – “ Gujarat International Finance Tec – City” is being executed by ESSER by Honeywell and Honeywell Public Address & Voice Alarm Systems. Here, residents and visitors can access state-of-the-art amenities while enjoying the tranquillity of wide-open expanses and a scenic natural waterfront. To top it off, Lavasa enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year giving one the chance to enjoy its beauty all year round. This hill city is being planned for approximately 0.3 million permanent residents with facilities for about 2 mil-
lion tourists every year and an employment base of approximately 97,000. Accommodation options in Lavasa range from budget to luxury hotels and a variety of restaurants ensure that every palate is catered to. With the opening of Lavasa International Convention Centre, business tourism has received a significant fillip. With an array of options in entertainment, sports and hospitality, Lavasa is a destination for residents, tourists and businessmen alike. Delhi - Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)
The vision for DMIC is to create strong economic base with globally competitive environment and state-ofthe-art infrastructure to activate local commerce, enhance foreign investments and attain sustainable development. Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor
is to be conceived as a Model Industrial Corridor of international standards with emphasis on expanding the manufacturing and services base and develop DMIC as the ‘Global Manufacturing and Trading Hub’. The Government of india is setting up a multi-nodal Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) between Delhi and Mumbai. Out of the total 1483 kms of the length of DFC, 38% is falling in Gujarat. The area of 150 kms on the both sides of the DFC will be developed as DMIC. It will be a high impact industrial corridor. DMIC is to be developed as a Global Manufacturing and Trading Hub of India supported by world class infrastructure and enablining policy framework, It will become “the engine for economic resurgence of the coutry”

city infrastructures that deliver vital services such as transportation, healthcare, education and public safety. Adding to the strain are ever-changing public demands for better education, greener programs, accessible government, affordable housing and more options for senior citizens.
Dholera SIR is the first such node, taken up for developement by the Government of Gujarat. Shendra Bidkin
In an effort to promote industrialization and increase the share of manufacturing in India’s GDP, Government of India has decided to undertake the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Project. It is an ambitious project aimed at developing an Industrial Zone spanning across six states in India. It is being developed with Japanese assistance.
Replacing the actual city infrastructures is often unrealistic in terms of cost and time. However, with recent advances in technology, we can infuse our existing infrastructures with new intelligence. By this, we mean digitizing and connecting our systems, so they can sense, analyze and integrate data, and respond intelligently to the needs of their jurisdictions. In short, we can revitalize them so they can become smarter and more efficient. In the process, cities can grow and sustain quality of life for their inhabitants.
As part of the DMIC the state has decided to develop the Shendra Bidkin belt in Aurangabad as planned industrial township. Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project is worth Rs18,500 crore.
in Shendra (Aurangabad) will require Rs2,790 crore for industrial development and Dighi international port and infrastructure development will require Rs5,967 crore.
The project will be a joint venture of the Centre and the state. Adopting the public-private partnership model, the project will give a major boost to Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Raigad, Nashik, Aurangabad, Ahmednagar, Dhule and Nandurbar.
The Shendra township will cover 8,340 hectares and Dighi port will take up 25,000 hectares. Roads, drinking water, power, schools, hospitals, market centres, gardens, sewerage, storm water drainage will be built. The stateCentre joint project will be one of the biggest in Asian countries.
Making cities more instrumented, interconnected and intelligent isn’t only about overcoming the challenges cities face. It is about recognizing that many of the challenges we face in making a smarter planet are centered on creating sustainable cities.
Eco City Elsewhere, the state of Haryana has signed an agreement to build an Eco City in Manesar with a Japanese consortium comprising NEC, Tokyo Gas and Toshiba, along with Japan’s Ministry of the Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
Cities symbolize and centralize so many aspects of what will make for a smarter planet: smarter education, smarter healthcare, smarter water and energy use, smarter public safety, smarter transportation, and smarter government ... to name but a few.
India needs sustainable
A new report from the IBM Institute for Business Value, “A Vision of Smarter Cities,” makes the case that cities must use new technologies to transform their systems to optimize the use of finite resources. As sustainability for cities and the planet becomes ever more important, the question isn’t whether cities will do this; the question is: Which ones are doing it first? And who will do it best? (Source: IBM Smart Planet)
The DMIC has plans to upgrade two-tier cities in the state and give it an overall growth. While Nashik and Dhule will become the new industrial centres of state, Dighi will have international status port and Pune a world-class cargo hub. The Dighi port and Shendra (Aurangabad) will emerge as industrial townships complete with world-class infrastructure. According to a statement by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan “We will construct a world-class industrial township in Dighi and Aurangabad in the first phase of the DMIC project. The projects will start immediately and will be completed in 2019,” Two major power projects will also be undertaken with the projects to meet the demand and supply which will rise with the industrial growth. ongestion causes consternation, for good reason. Greenhouse emissions befoul the air, while precious time is lost as cars do the bumper tap. Some estimates put the toll of urban traffic in the billions, making it a priority for city management. Some cities resort to creative solutions, such as Rio de Janeiro building cable cars over its “favelas,” or shantytowns dotted over its rolling hills. Other cities invest in traffic monitoring, such as China’s rollouts of 5-megapixel and 8-megapixel cameras at major intersections. Vi d e o s u r v e i l l a n c e m o n i t o r s roadside conditions, helping coordinate response, evacuation readiness and road closures. “For example, in a city like Bangalore, India, a commuter or delivery truck could be checking intersections to determine when to start driving, or what route to take to avoid the worst traffic delays,” said Faiyaz Shahpurwala, Senior VP of Advanced Services and Emerging Solutions, Cisco Systems. “In Scandinavia or the northern states of the U.S., the video could be showing operations whether more snowplows are needed, or helping a transit operator or school district know whether current snow conditions will affect operations.” Smart traffic eases congestion proactively. “If you have a big
disaster, we’re able to help emergency personnel respond faster and more dynamically,” said Dave Bartlett, VP of Industry Solutions for Smarter Buildings, IBM. “The new way is to have smart sensors in buildings and road maps to pinpoint the problem areas and connect traffic systems to redirect traffic, so the emergency crew can reach a destination faster. It can shave off seconds and minutes, which can make a

bollards to keep busy nighttime area traffic from entering residential streets, said David Dickinson, Senior VP at Delta Scientific. It needed a street closure barricade to block off a residential area from nighttime traffic resulting from Sunset Boulevard nightclubs and restaurants. In the day, the bollards are lowered to let cars through. Mobile barricades also keep cars out of restricted areas. The Los Angeles Police Department manages vehicle access with movable barricades during times of heightened security, Dickinson said. They are also used for special events unique to Los Angeles, such as Hollywood award ceremonies. Implementing traffic-calming schemes reduces pollution and accidents, while pedestrians are able to enjoy the city experience at an optimum level. “In Holland, 35 larger cities have closed off their city centers with bollards that are connected to our vehicle management controllers,” said Maarten Mijwaart, GM of Automatic Vehicle Identification, Nedap. Buses, ambulances, registered
taxis and fire trucks are granted access through long-range transit tags. ALPR allows suppliers in, and proximity badges issued to city staff David enable access, for Dickinson, Senior VP at Delta a range of technolScientific ogies working as a whole.

Conserving energy is a top priority for cities. China’s 12th Five-Year Plan (2011 to 2015) mandates all government buildings to be green, including administrative buildings and state-owned corporations. While commercial buildings are not required to go green, they are strongly urged to adopt efficient policies. This helps reduce energy costs and greenhouse emissions, while improving operational efficiency. There is no question that energy is a limited and expensive resource, but implementing a solution depends on local sensibilities. “For energy, there’s a huge challenge because there’s no

standard,” said Cosimo Malesci, VP of Sales and Marketing, Fluidmesh Networks. “In the U.S., they try to go to the smart grid on mesh networks, while Europe is using 3-G because it’s stronger. Asia seems a bit behind. The idea and intention are there, but we are far from the real implementation of smart cities and making them sustainable.” Energy measures are flawed, but are a step in the right direction. “A smart grid is an electricity and energy delivery system from the point of generation to the point of consumption, which has been integrated with communication and information technologies to enhance grid operations, improve customer service, lower costs and enable new environmental benefits,” Shahpurwala said. “This is an essential component of smart cities.” Waste ManaGeMent Waste management refers to both energy conservation and garbage. While the two are related, the methods to collect data rely on sensor networks. “Waste management is another field where sensors can be installed to know when containers are full to be emptied by waste companies,” said Alberto Bielsa Noveleta, Project and Training Manager, Libelium. “This way, only the containers that are really full

A citywide network provides countless opportunities, with connected classrooms being a natural continuation. “Social media and Internet technologies in the last few years have transformed the world and how we interact, and that change has impacted the world of education as well,” Shahpurwala said. Digital media also allows cities to disseminate information in a more interactive fashion. IBM is working with a city council and local university to develop smartphone apps for citizens. “The key is to develop an app they want to use, one that is intuitive and meaningful to them,” Bartlett said. “Apps can be used to report problems, such as a hole in road, a sign missing, graffiti, or crime and safety issues. They can also be used by the city to update citizens on mass-transit updates or when the latest flu shot will be available.” Accessible communications provide more transparency and visibility for city services. “This allows people to become smart sensors in the city themselves,” Bartlett said.

It is crucial for smart cities to have an agreed vision and a disciplined implementation. Technology must consider people and processes. Planning, planning and more planning — smart cities require careful consideration and specific objectives. “In the bidding process, we have extensive preliminary discussions,” said Weifeng Yang, VP at ZTE NetView. “The communication is very high-level, to determine goals with city leaders.” The city needs to determine what its priorities are. “Critical supply infrastructure and traffic management are at the core of each city and need to be protected,” said Erika Görge, Communications Manager, Bosch Security Systems. “A trend in the security industry is the convergence of different critical infrastructural monitoring systems, such as city surveillance and transportation systems, energy/water distribution, waste management and communication networks. The convergence of those systems will coordinate and interconnect the police and fire brigades, in the case of accidents, natural disasters or criminal activities.” H o w e v e r, t h e d e c e n t r a l i z e d organizational structure of a city

can deter a cohesive response from all agencies. This requires setting goals and establishing processes, on top of technology. “Processdriven response is key to optimize the coordination during a safety crisis, because the success of the intervention does not rely only on the skills and training of the individuals handling the alarms, but, in addition, the whole process is automatically aided by the established emergency plans,” said Maria Ruiz, Strategic Project Manager, Fire Safety and Security Strategy, Siemens Building Technologies. “The technology is prepared to provide the functionality described, but the coordination of all the involved stakeholders in the city is challenging.” It is crucial for cities to have an agreed vision and a disciplined implementation approach. “The people in the city are the change agents to drive transformation,” Bartlett said. “It’s not just the technology, but the process, people and the roles people will take.” Shahpurwala agreed. “Collaboration among agencies means lower crime, better citywide services and better information — a smarter city at work.” Smart cities require planning and communicating to the extreme, as it affects citizens, city administration and local businesses. “Getting the systems up and running and integrating seamlessly are really a shared responsibility of all parties involved: city representatives, users, integrators and manufac-
turers will have to collaborate unconditionally to be able to make smart cities a reality,” Mijwaart said. “Excellent project management and clear ownership of responsibilities alone will not be sufficient. Introducing anything that affects the lives of people and the business of local entrepreneurs requires additional efforts and skills to be able to keep all parties aligned, keep the project going while managing the potential public debate.” lack of BenchMarks There is no IQ test for city “ s m a r t n e s s , ” s o m o s t p ro j e c t s follow the money. “It is important to realize the cost and impact of crime on economies, be they developing economies or those in the developed

Studies of Los Angeles and New York City calculated congestion cost each city US$10 billion or more, which could be a significant drain on developing economies, Shahpurwala said. Diversity is one reason why it is difficult to quantify results. “A city may have a harbor district while another may have a chemical complex; others would have an important business hub, or a focus on education or health care campuses,” Ruiz said. Barcelona joins forces with cisco to create smart city campus
Barcelona's Deputy Mayor for Urban Habitat, Antonio Vives, announced partnerships with Cisco, Telefonica, Abertis, Agbar and Schneider Electric to promote the Smart City Campus, an area dubbed 22@, a new district in the Poblenou area of Barcelona which will focus on the development of businesses, universities, entrepreneurship, ICT research centers, ecology and urban planning. The Barcelona City Council has sought strategic relationships with these worldwide technology leaders to convert Barcelona into a laboratory for experimentation and innovation. Barcelona City Hall and Cisco are collaborating to promote a leading integrated urban platform which allows for the development of functional technological applications to improve the efficiency and quality of services received by citizens. Currently, both parties are working to reinforce their framework, dig into the collaboration and facilitate the possible future implementation of an Innovation Center in Barcelona that would be a leader in exploring new technological possibilities, serving cities and people. Along with the alliance of universities, cities and international
companies, and in collaboration with MIT, Barcelona will develop a "City Protocol," a worldwide standard to measure the degree of sustainability and capacity to generate a higherquality of life for its citizens. This protocol is expected to be developed within the next 18 months. In February 2011, Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers met with Jordi Hereu, the mayor of Barcelona to announce the initiative that will use technology as an enabler to help transform Barcelona into a blueprint for modern urban development. Similar to how DVRs took over the VCR market, NVRs are set to conquer the DVR market and become star products for the security industry. With all due respect, the success of video surveillance is largely dependent on video storage as well as ease of access and management. These days, with the advent of affordable IP cameras, their usage has drastically increased. This boom has given birth to a mammoth amount of digital surveillance that needs to be properly stored and analyzed.

here are many factors that are fueling the migration from DVR to NVR, for example, demands for HD, the maturation of IP-based solutions, cheaper and larger HDD storage, “unlimited” NVR channel restrictions, and remote surveillance. The main drivers; however, are price and standardization. “Affordable IP products from major manufacturers have helped to accelerate the migration as it quickly becomes a lower cost option to install IP cameras where an existing network infrastructure exists,”said Tim Biddulph, IP Product Manager for Europe at Samsung Techwin. “The main driver behind the migration from DVR to NVR is standardization. The vast majority of new buildings utilize a structured cabling system designed to support all the systems within, from telephones to building management. It is only logical that security systems should also use the same infrastructure.” “New projects (as well as upgrade projects) in the EMEA region are gradually moving to IP, while in the Americas, government and enterprise sectors have already adopted to IP solutions. However, some developing countries in the APAC region are still using analog solutions. In general, all market sectors are moving towards

IP solutions, which is great news for the NVR market,” shared Evelyn Kao, Product Manager at QNAP Systems. “While larger projects are demanding network solutions of some sort, analog is still the domain of the small installations or home market. However, with the advent of network home cameras and cloud solutions, even the small domestic solution is starting to go IP,” added Biddulph. “Some folks prefer an HD solution with one or two different camera models to fulfill the needs of an entire site, perhaps looking at cost of ownership and simplicity of design over a more elegant solution. This is a shift away from some of the more complicated system designs of the past, using HD resolution as an overall quality upgrade rather than a design tool.” “ Wo r l d w i d e N V R s a l e s w i l l certainly expand. Amongst all the regions, Asia's migration to IP systems is remarkable and such a trend will reinforce the growing number of NVR sales,” noted Alex Iida, Senior Manager of Visual Security Solutions for APAC at Sony Electronics. In addition, a recent take up of NVRs in SMB as well as home security verticals has been observed. The key drivers are low prices and easy installation and operation.

Comparing apples to oranges
NVRs are basically customized servers that are built for the purpose of handling IP camera systems, and usually operate on Windows or Linux. These days, NVRs are rack mountable and are even available in one rack unit sizes. Many NVRs are open platform to facilitate maximum flexibility and scalability, which is especially useful when deploying large or enterprise solutions.
Tim Biddulph, IP Product Manager, Europe, Samsung Techwin
May 2013 FEB 2013
“NVRs are starting to be used in more scenarios, especially with the launch of 4 and 16 channel units that look and feel much like analog DVRs. With a monitor output and DVD writer, these NVRs make IP solutions easier for smaller installers and operators. It is now not uncommon to see 4 channel HD solutions in small high value retail installations,” said Biddulph. Another factor is PoE enabled NVRs that allow for plug-and-play. “We are the first manufacturer to develop and successfully implement PoE NVRs; the plug-and-play function makes everything much easier. These PoE NVRs proved to be very popular with the SMB and DIY market,” said Colin Wang, NVR Product Manager at Dahua.

• PoE and wireless compatibilities enable installation in hard-to-wire environments • Future-proof investments Many of the embedded NVRs’ functions bear resemblance to their DVR predecessors. In addition, many NVRs’ GUIs are exactly the same as DVRs, so switching from DVRs to NVRs does not put any unnecessary burden on users as they do not need to change their usual routine — no additional training is required. For smaller installations, 16 channels and under, only basic IT knowledge is required. With PC-based NVRs, the number of channels is “unlimited,” and even more convincing is the VMS providers who offer free software that is preinstalled in their NVRs. For even smaller channels, such as 8 or 4 channels, one can opt for a PC-based NVR approach by using a desktop PC and entry-level VMS; however this set up offers limited flexibility and functionality. “With the advent

Ease of use and installation is one of the trademarks of NVRs. Choosing the right equipment for storing digital recording can be quite a daunting task. Functions and features that a decent NVR should encompass are: flexible recording and playback capabilities, a user-friendly GUI, intelligent video motion detection, PTZ camera control, as well as an intuitive remote control unit.

ever increasing standard of available bandwidth and H.264 resolution, HD and megapixel IP cameras have been propelled into mainstream. However, it should be noted that some embedded NVRs do not support high resolution recording. Choosing an NVR that supports megapixel recording will help to future-proof your surveillance system.
Quick Review of DvR ShoRtcomingS:

Another option is to look for NVRs that are especially designed so that the video management program is preloaded in a DOM (disk on module) chip. This way, instead of shipping the whole machine back, only the small DOM chip needs to be replaced. “Our NVRs can be equipped with a power DOM, which contains NVR software and Linux OS, said Sara Lin, VP at Instek Digital.

distinct advantage over SIs without sufficient IT background, for they are thought to be able to offer better service and support. Their network savviness allows them to offer customers shorter lead times. “Many SIs are the platform developer and provider, and because they have more experience in platform development many times they can meet customer’s requirements in shorter time frame,” cited Colin Wang, NVR Product Manager at Dahua Technology. He added, “These days, manufacturers put more and more investment in software and services, transforming themselves from merely product providers to total solution providers.” More and more IT integrators have started to shift their focus to the video surveillance market. This development is correlated to lower margins in the IT industry. Experience will tell you that sufficient knowledge and experience in video surveillance is equally important. “We believe that SIs with CCTV background still dominate the market. For us, our R&D, FAE, and sales teams work closely with our partners (SIs) so that they fully understand the solution that they are selling,” shared Lin. Iida shared similar sentiments, “When choosing an SI for surveillance projects, it is important to look for a balanced level of knowledge with regards to surveillance systems. In addition, we believe offering better service and support are part of the value and identity of SIs.” To futureproof your video system investments, it is important to look for system integrators who possess both IT and security expertise.

loud-based video surveillance is booming in the current scenario and is fast building momentum with mounting knowledge and acceptance of newer technologies. As per March 2012 IMS Research report, the world market for cloud based video surveillance, or video surveillance as a service (VSaaS), is worth over $500 million in 2011 and this is likely to increase in 2012. The report indicates that the VSaaS market has even stronger growth prospects than originally predicted. However, a key factor that will determine the success of the market will be the VSaaS providers’ ability to overcome the previously stated product barriers. If VSaaS providers are successful in overcoming these barriers, IMS Research predicts that the world market could exceed $1 billion by 2014. “We are observing an enormous demand and acceptance for cloudbased surveillance in the overseas market due to the advantages and cost-effectiveness offered by this solution. the Indian market, this trend is slowly but steadily spreading its roots. Over the years, we can anticipate high demand for cloud-based video surveillance that allows streaming the video and accommodates a storage device enabling increased user interface.” said Sudhindra Holla, Country Manager, Axis Communications India. He further observed, ”Cloud based surveillance will also help vendors to get in the SMB and the residential market, which is still primarily dominated by analog and by low-end manufacturers. Many TSPs (Total Solution Providers) may have an advantage since they control the end-to-end expenses of the solution, but user friendly do-it-yourself systems may prove to be a challenge to such box providers.” “The ability to seamlessly integrate security hardware and software products provides vendors, service providers and system integrators with numerous opportunities. Today, enterprises, small medium businesses and end customers are looking at surveillance technologies as a must have to ensure the safety of their staff and the individuals along with information security. “There is an increase in the general level of awareness about the importance of installing surveillance solutions. With this, we will see high momentum in terms of growth. The government’s initiatives to encourage the installation of CCTV cameras will also contribute to the growth of the surveillance market,” explained Sudhindra Holla. “IT is the biggest driver for growth in the security industry and it provides the ability to integrate disparate systems such as video surveillance, access control, and intrusion sensors seamlessly,” opined Jatin Desai. Camana Bay, stretching from the Caribbean Sea to the North Sound, contains a planned, multipurpose community that will be developed over several decades. With the continuity of its building systems in mind, the local development team selected Johnson Controls to design and integrate the town’s major low-voltage systems. The plan for Camana Bay was designed to evolve and grow organically to meet the changing local markets and requirements. For Dale Dennis, CEO of DE Technology, ensuring the continuity of the town's major low-voltage systems such as fire and security systems, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) controls and other technologies was critical in considering this development.

The developers started the design with the town center and school as the foundation of Camana Bay. Residential areas would then follow once the town’s amenities were in place to support them. The design includes a Johnson Controls P2000 security management system for access control at retail and office spaces. Video surveillance is in place at all building exteriors, parking lots and garages. They are linked to the central operations system via a Johnson Controls DVN 5000 digital video-recording system. An emergency call system is also in place throughout exterior parking lots and garages. An addressable audio system installed throughout the site further enables operators to playback multiple soundtracks and differentiate them by location. All HVAC systems and equipment are monitored and controlled by a Johnson Controls Metasys building management system. The Metasys system is also used for the monitoring and control of an emergency center. Command-and-control center generator, central chiller plant, fuel tanks and a Lutron Grafik system for lighting in common areas can be controlled by Johnson Controls intelligent fire control panels. Fire alarm systems in all common areas can also be integrated and controlled. These low-voltage systems are converged on a single IP network which is routed back to the command-andcontrol center that manage the systems 24/7. All the unnecessary and redundant cabling is avoided. As the development expands, additional or expanded systems can ride on the same network. Furthermore, Johnson Controls trained a local subcontractor that will take ownership of installations in future phases and provide additional training to operations personnel as needed.

designed to grow. “We’ve just completed Phase One of this project. Everything has gone so well, that this client has already ordered a large number of these additional Hikvision camera units for the next phase,” Gupta explained.
•
Like the aforementioned Clara Swain solution, this project shares strong similarities: both are hospitals and both are located in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh – a northern state in the country of India; Gupta’s company serves as system integrator for both.

But, as Gupta expressed, the big key was improved resolution, “Our new requirement put a premium on sharper resolution, and this was achieved through the DVR’s 4CIF resolution real-time recording, as well as HDMI and VGA output at up-to 1920×1080P resolution.” In turn, this new emphasis on greater resolution allowed Hikvision’s DS-2CC572P-M 540 TVL 1/3” CCD Day & Night Camera to really shine. Located throughout the interior on the hospital, the DS-2CC572P-M utilizes its compact structure design and is placed on both ceilings and walls. With features like a 1/3 inch SONY CCD, day / night auto switch, a low-illumination ability of 0.1Lux @ F1.2, and an auto white balance, auto gain control, electronic shutter control and backlight compensation; this dome camera prevents the common nuisances of pick-pocketing and the theft of costly medicine at the pharmacy, as well as improving the vital administrative function of tracking the movement of patients throughout the various wards. “From both a crime-preventive and logistical standpoints, this Hikvision dome has already improved security and efficiency,” summed up Gupta. Specifically, this bullet IR camera is placed on outdoor security guard stations at a height of 3.5 meters. Gupta noted, “This camera’s IR functionality serves dual purposes. Obviously, it gives us great coverage in the evening. But, equally important, it also allows us coverage if there is a power outage … an unfortunate common occurrence in India … thus allowing our camera operators the ability to see who is coming-in and coming-out regardless of time or the functionality of this hospital’s external lights.” Additional bonuses, such as an IP66 weather rating come in very handy in the forgiving daytime heat and significantly cooler evenings. From a technical standpoint, a SONY Exview HAD CCD II, 0.001 Lux @ F1.2 (0 Lux with IR) minimum illumination, auto white balance, auto gain control, electronic shutter control and backlight compensation, as well as internal synchronization all promise top-of-line imaging results. Yet, with the introduction of these new, high-quality Hikvision cameras, an additional Hikvision DVR model was called for. Thus, the DS-7316 HFI-S Embedded Net DVR was called upon. In this case, an easy-to-operate and user-friendly menu allowed security employees to easily access features such as up-to 1024×768 VGA output resolution, the support of live view, backup / playback of high definition images; and digital zoom in live view / playback through the use of a mouse in PTZ control mode were all quickly utilized. Finally, the DS-2CC197P(N)-A 540 TVL 1/3” CCD WDR ICR Day & Night Box Camera is tasked with manning the main Out-Patient Department (OPD). Because of this particular area’s lighting conditions, a special camera was needed: “This room is largely surrounded by glass. As such, it suffers from extreme lighting challenges, and many cameras simply were not able to adjust to the bright days and dark nights,” explained Gupta. Fortunately, this Hikvision box camera employs a powerful 160× Wide Dynamic Range – perfectly suited for strong backlight environment of this OPD. Gupta: “WDR was absolutely vital for this location, and Hikvision technology really came through for us.” Complementing this WDR is auto white balance, auto gain control, electronic shutter control, and backlight compensation; but more importantly is Hikvision’s promise to both integrator and end-user: a solution that guarantees not only the success of your immediate project, but the success of future endeavors, as well.

As of 2008, the city had an estimated population of 111,025. Since the late 1980’s, Allentown has undergone the type of socio-economic transformation typical of many eastern American cities. Allentown had long been noted for its close proximity to both Philadelphia (60 mi/97km) to the south and New York City (90 mi/140km) to the east. The completion of two major roadway projects circa 1990-2000 made Allentown even more accessible, for better and for worse, to influences from both cities. Challenges

Fulfilling the need for a full-time law enforcement presence in these high-crime areas, the solution would serve as both a crime deterrent and as an investigation aid. CSI proposed to equip the surveillance system with Sony’s SNCRX550N—Network Rapid Dome Cameras. This model of camera is ideal for this particular application because of its low-light performance. In use 24-hours a day on city streets, law enforcement relies on the rapid dome cameras’ clarity in low-light conditions and Intelligent Motion features. These features
enable the cameras to patrol the area around their location and to automatically provide stable and sharp images on areas of sudden or repeated movement. This focusing could also be controlled by 911 Communications Center officers in response to radio messages or calls to police. Another advantage the cameras presented is an image processing technology providing multiple compression formats, an important feature as the footage was stored at APD head-quarters and could be retrieved for use in the investigation and prosecution of criminal activity. CSI combined the Sony cameras to a wireless surveillance system and directional wireless panel antennas for video backhaul in a weather-proof, thermostatcontrolled enclosure. The camera was bottom-mounted for maximum coverage and enclosed in a vandal-resistant dome. Some of cameras were mounted with a blue “awareness light” to draw attention to their presence. All of the cameras are connected to a multi-point wireless network to a viewing/archiving server in the City’s Data Center. CSI designed and installed two monitoring 64

stations in the city’s 911 Communications Center and Public Safety Building, while enabling video to be pushed to patrol vehicles. Results
Upon the activation of the first phase of the system, the city observed a reduction in crime, meeting the objective of the initiative. Police see and interrupt crimes in progress and are also able to use footage obtained from the cameras as evidence in making arrests and to refute claims of tampering or other alleged misconduct during arrests. In the years following the launch, additional cameras placed in other Allentown neighborhoods provide similar positive results. There are now over 100 cameras in operation city wide. As part of his January 2011 “state of the city address, Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski noted that the crime rate in the city has declined four consecutive years, 2007-2010 and credited the
presence of the surveillance system as one of the key drivers in reducing the crime rates. In February 2011, a gas line explosion rocked an Allentown neighborhood, sending a fireball through several homes, destroying them and causing five fatalities. A surveillance camera less than 50 feet from the blast remained operational through the entire incident and the live feed was used to help direct first responders to the scene. Why Sony Cameras Were Selected
During the formative stages of the
project, CSI and Allentown mapped out the projected requirements for the system. It was readily apparent that if the cameras failed to deliver as intended, there was a high risk of the loss of time, money and reputation for all involved.

Siemens Secures Istanbul airport’s “New Gateway to the World” Siemens has successfully installed security and building automation systems in Sabiha Gökçen International Airport in Turkey. Voted the “World’s Best Airport”1 and the recipient of several other prestigious awards, Sabiha Gökçen serves 11 million passengers annually, and is considered to be the largest ‘earthquake-proof’ building in the world. Submitted BY SIEMENS
All has been integrated into the danger management system, which clearly displays alarms, messages and statuses of all connected systems using a standardized format according to safety priorities. Its modular architecture makes it both cost-effective and scalable. Single as well as multiple-station applications, whether local or remote, are supported. In the event of evacuation, the integrated voice notification system using 4,600 loudspeakers, is brought into action. Integrating building automation, safety and security
I
t is the second international airport built to serve Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city and 2010’s ‘European Capital of Culture’. It predominantly serves charter airlines and offers inland connections, low-price flights, short distances and is known for its keeping to the schedule. Its original annual capacity was 3.5 million passengers per year but in mid-2008, it was decided to extend the airport quite considerably in order to upgrade its international capability. The new 185,000 square-metre structure is capable of withstanding an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 on the Richter scale and also remaining operational afterwards. Safety and security were naturally vital issues for the developers, along with energy efficiency, which is why Siemens was enlisted for the installation of various systems. Due to the size of the terminal building, the energy issues are extremely complex. The airport terminal has a large number of windows, causing solar heating and
66
May 2013
increasing the amount of light inside. It was therefore important to have an intelligent system that monitors what is happening outside and then compensates automatically inside. The installed Desigo building automation systems from Siemens does exactly this by measuring 11,000 data points. It accordingly will raise blinds, turn off lights, reduce heating, or increase air conditioning, therefore saving energy and ensuring a comfortable environment for passengers and staff inside the terminal. Intelligent danger management
The safety and security system required the installation of the MM8000 danger management system, along with a Sinteso fire detection system, both from Siemens. The total system comprises 9,000 fire detectors combined with 400 carbon monoxide gas detectors, together with 200 video surveillance cameras and 28 digital recorders from Siemens to provide maximum security for all passengers and staff alike.
Another feature of the project was a Totally Integrated Power (TIP) approach from Siemens which offers power distribution from the mediumvoltage supply right though to the socket outlet, providing maximum control and therefore optimized safety. In safety terms, the TIP, which includes low voltage Sivacon switchgear, 140 motor control centers, and universal metering cabinets, measures the stability of the energy network, helping to detect any irregularities in the energy distribution system before it causes fire or a power failure. In terms of energy efficiency, an increasingly critical factor in operating airport terminal buildings, the TIP also provides the means to monitor and control the airport’s energy consumption. These integrated systems of security, fire safety and building automation form the heart of a typical Total Building Solution from Siemens. All the disciplines are effectively and flexibly coordinated to make the airport buildings safer, more comfortable, more efficient – and thereby more economical. The solution can be easily adapted to changes in usage and requirements or expanded at anytime, therefore protecting the original investment in the longer term.

Safer Ship Travel with Milestone-Axis IP Video Surveillance Fire on board resulted in a new level of safety on Norwegian ferries Submitted BY MILESTONE SYSTEMS
M
ilestone Systems’ open platform IP video management software (VMS) is installed in the Norwegian ship service called ‘Hurtigruten’ with network cameras from Axis Communications. An engine room fire in 2011 prompted renovations with innovative surveillance technology for safety and operational excellence. Hurtigruten is a traditional ferry service for the transportation of goods and passengers between Bergen and Kirkenes in Norway. Serving the coastal population since 1866, it is both a transport route and a tourist attraction. The route currently has 11 vessels calling at 34 ports every day of the year, transporting more than 230,000 passengers. The route has been called ‘the most beautiful voyage in the world’. In 2006 the travel publisher Lonely Planet ranked Hurtigruten the best voyage in the world on its ‘Blue List’. In March 2007 the UK’s Travel Weekly pronounced Hurtigruten the best in the world for special cruises. In September of 2011 an explosive fire broke out in the engine room of one of Hurtigruten’s vessels, MS Nordlys. The passengers and crew were evacuated, but the fire caused great damage to the vessel, which required five months of shipyard repairs. Nordlys was not able to re-enter service until March 2012. In connection with the
renovation, it was decided to replace and modernize the communication system and infrastructure. The consultancy firm NCMC was engaged to develop the new system standard. NCMC are consultants for maritime IT system solutions and act as a test center, evaluating solutions for all needs on board a vessel. The objective is to install innovative technology of the highest quality with the best functionality. Move from analog to IP technology
The old infrastructure on board the MS Nordlys was based on an analog matrix that was completely destroyed in the fire. When the new telephone cables were laid, a modern IP network was also installed. The old analog surveillance cameras were replaced with the latest in IP video technology: network cameras from Axis Communications were installed, with XProtect® Professional video management software (VMS) from Milestone Systems. MS Nordlys thereby improved the safety and security of the passengers and crew, as well as communication on board the vessel. “The total surveillance solution is very good because Axis has cameras that fit into many different environments, and Milestone’s software is flexible, reliable and easy to use. My objective is always to find the state-of-the-art, and the Axis/Milestone combination provides this,” says Idar Flø, CEO of NCMC. Installing IP networks on board vessels can be a challenge since the ships move all the time. If you want to have contact with shore, you risk interruption when the ship moves. On MS
Nordlys this was solved by using three different network technologies that complement and back each other up. This guarantees contact with the control rooms in ports. “By using a common ITbased standard for the infrastructure, this solution can also be implemented on other ships. It is then easier for the control rooms on shore to communicate with the ships in service,” says Flø. Video improves operational performance
Essential ship operations benefit from using the surveillance: guest reception, the retail shop, unloading and loading, wharf landings, the car deck traffic, the bridge overview and the engine room all represent task areas for the crew, who gain better performance and safety from the video monitoring. Video from the engine room helps the engineers on board to make sure that everything is in proper working order. Monitoring also ensures additional safety for the crew in the engine room; colleagues located elsewhere on the ship can be alerted if something happens requiring fast response. The camera installed on the mast also lets the captain see the color of the engine smoke that could signal a fire has broken out below. “The image quality from the Axis cameras is very high. We have also benefited greatly from Milestone’s solution. It provides an overview and control that is easy and intuitive to use, as well as providing improved safety for the passengers,” says Ole Johan Andreassen, Captain of MS Nordlys. Hurtigruten may add more cameras in the future, and the Milestone open platform can flexibly expand as needed to manage this. The company is also looking at intelligent video analytics: ‘people counting’ is an integration that can be beneficial in emergency situations like an evacuation. 67

Project Management A “Project Manager”role is a natural progression for many Engineers early in their careers. These Engineers are thrust into project management situations soon after college graduation, and must quickly learn to swim in the deep end. This results in half-baked knowledge being picked up from here and there, and hence, an early establishment of “bad habits in Project Management”, that persist with them far into their careers, which in most of the cases leads to fire-fighting & crisis management while managing a project, resulting into large scale customer dissatisfaction. Essentials There are four major facets in managing a project well: • What needs to be Achieved in a Project. • How to Achieve the above. • What to Monitor in a Project. • How to Monitor the above Effectively. In my experience, even experienced Project Managers often lose sight of the forest by focusing on the trees, and get so involved in the day to day tasks that they lose sight of these 4 overarching facets.

Mobile Phones and NFC: Time to Expect Radical Changes The day has come when life without mobiles cannot be imagined. Also, NFC (or the Near Field Communication) has been the talk of the town since a past few years, being supported by most of the mobile giants now. Although, we have no major applications for NFC yet in India, NFC ready mobile phones have already entered our markets with the additional offerings of Internet and multimedia services. ith the advent of NFC, the contactless card technology has now expanded its domain of applicability by adding contactless functionality to these mobile phone. In some countries, services benefiting from the convergence of contactless card technology and mobile phones have already been introduced commercially, and these converging services have been implemented successfully. Before we enter the fascinating world of NFC driven lifestyle, let uslook at one day in the life of a random person - Anand. Anandworks at a research and development centre and goes to the office by the metro every day. As he has a season ticket card for the travel, he uses it to gain entry into the metro trains. He reaches his office shows his contactless ID card to enter the office. Being from the research field, he is allowed to go into a few laboratories, but not the laboratories in other departments.
At the lunch time he goes to the office canteen for lunch. The company has given him a prepaid canteen card which he uses to buy his lunch. The money automatically gets debited from his account upon purchase. He has plans to watch a movie in the evening, along with some shopping. So, he uses the internet from his PC to book tickets and pays through his internet banking account. While on his way to the move, he enters a mall and makes some purchases. He pays by his debit card. After the movies, he goes out for dinner and pays through his credit card. Looking at the above day, we can conclude that Anand leads a fairly technosavvy life. However, let’s look at a similar day he would lead in maybe a couple of years. Anand leaves for the office, carrying his NCF enabled mobile phone with him. He enters the metro station showing the mobile phone which is now equipped with a contactless card feature and the readers at the metro stations is equipped in reading these frequencies. He enters his office upon displaying his mobile phone and accesses his department. However, as his office access control system is managed by rights, he cannot use his phone to enter other departments. During the lunch break, he goes to the office canteen and buys lunch. He pays through the M-money that is preloaded on his mobile device, again by displaying his phone. The amount is
automatically debited from his current balance in the phone. Now, Anand plans for a movie, but wants to check if the tickets are available and book a couple of them if readily available. He logs on the ticket booking site from his mobile ticket booking application and checks for the availability. Booking of the tickets are also done via the same application which is connected to his banking account. While shopping, he pays through his NFC enabled e-money payment system easily, because even the point of sale (PoS) equipment is NFC enabled too. Similarly, he pays for his dinner via his phone. Here we observe that the lifestyle of Anand has completely changed. He does not carry any debit cards, credit cards, office ID badges or metro season cards anymore. The identity is now is mobile phone. His bank is now his mobile phone. But for the success of this, there are a few players who actively need to participate. • The mobile devices manufacturers • The mobile network operators • The service providers • The banks • The application developers Finally, let me leave you with a quick thought of how soon to expect this technology in our everyday routine. The Pareto’s rule says that 80% time is taken to develop and fine tune a technology and 20% time to implement it. We are in the 20% phase now. 69

British Companies Look to Unlock Potential of Indian Market John Davies, Chairman of the Export Council of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) presents his perspective on Indian Security Market. ndia’s expanding footprint, and the slowdown in Europe makes it an even more attractive proposition for British businesses in the years ahead. This fact was underlined in February by the high profile visit of the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, to the region with the key aim of the trip being to boost economic ties between the two countries. Given the prodigious rise of India, it is perhaps not surprising, therefore, that member companies of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) - the trade association representing 70% by value of the UK’s private security industry - and specifically our Export Council, are reporting unprecedented demand for enhanced security and surveillance measures on the subcontinent to combat pressing issues from criminal activity to the ongoing threat posed by terrorist attacks. For our part at the BSIA (British 70
May 2013
Security Industry Association) we have had a strong focus on developments in the Indian security market for over a decade now, whether commissioning specific research, taking part in the exhibition - including organizing a UK pavilion to showcase products and services from member companies - and arranging ‘Meet the Buyers’ events in conjunction with UKTI DSO (UK Trade and Investment Defence and Security Organisation) for prospective Indian customers. Significantly, in Britain we have considerable knowledge and technical expertise, from video surveillance to access control, that can be readily applied to the Indian environment. As the events of 7/7 in London and the tragic Mumbai attacks one year later serve to illustrate terrorism remains a major challenge for both of our countries. In fact part of the catalyst for the UK’s extensive video surveillance infrastructure was the UK’s experience of Irish terrorism as far back as the 1960s and 70s. Against this backdrop, BSIA member companies, especially those in our Export Council, are certainly keen to forge ever more productive links with Indian customers, whether that be governmental bodies at a local and national level, agents, distributors, integrators and end users. Thankfully, on the ground in India, there is still a strong recognition that solutions with a British label - and BSIA connection - provide
a reassurance of quality. This is something that is especially critical when it comes to high value infrastructure protection. Crucially, when working with BSIA members, Indian companies can be confident that strict requirements from compliance with industry standards and quality (ISO 9001) to financial viability have been met. Market Matters
To quantify the experience of BSIA member companies supplying solutions to the fast emerging Indian market we recently conducted an in-depth survey through our Export Council. Of the BSIA members who responded, significantly, half confirmed that they were already targeting India. Alongside this, of those who said they were not currently active in the country a third noted that they had plans in place to move into this critical market over the next 12 months. Given the strength of the Indian economy, and the impressive growth rates that continue to be posted on a yearly basis, we were particularly interested to establish whether British security businesses supplying Indian customers were seeing any benefit from this upward trend. Crucially, from the survey, over the last 12 months, a third of respondents confirmed that the value of their business with India had significantly increased, a further 50% reported sales in line with the previous
VIEW POINT year and only a small minority - 16.7% - reported a downturn. Considering the next 12 months, the outlook seems even stronger, with half of those who replied stating that they anticipate an upturn in sales. As our Export Council member companies tend to service multiple markets, across the globe, we were especially keen to discover where India ranks in terms of importance. One in three respondents placed India amongst the top ten countries they do business with. Thanks to the focus on strengthening trade links between the UK and India we would anticipate that the proportion of our members featuring India in the top ten will rise significantly in the months and years ahead. Technology Trends
Turning to the security technologies which, according to Export Council members, have had the most impact in India over the past 12 months, the area which stood out well ahead of any others was hybrid security technology on 60%. In practice, this hybrid approach allows the combination of legacy analogue infrastructure with the latest digital, networked, security technology. This can prove beneficial should site owners want to maximize their return on investment on older elements when upgrading to IP. Other areas singled out for attention by members
included: biometrics for access control and video content analysis capabilities like virtual tripwire and object left/object removed. Regarding the vertical markets where member companies are reporting the most demand in India, the predominant market sector from our research was government on 40% twice the level of other areas. Critical infrastructure protection, alongside the desire to enhance city centre surveillance, are important factors here. Other sectors spotlighted by the survey were corporate offices, hotel/leisure and banking. In terms of specific projects, a member company has sup-
plied hundreds of specialised cameras to the new international airport in New Delhi whilst another has been involved in an access control solution at the Port of Kochi. The Right Approach to Business
We also wanted to establish through our Export Council research what practical measures BSIA member companies are taking to mange their business with Indian customers. From the survey, an approach which stood out in a third of cases was working through an Indian partner, allowing them to access valuable local knowledge. Experience has shown that the right agent is an important stepping stone, especially for those who may not be able to establish their own presence in the country. Ultimately, this step alone can make all the difference between success and failure in India. Crucially, local knowledge can help to ensure that solutions are being presented to the right people and the bureaucratic process is well understood. Another option singled out by the survey is to actually have an office in the region. This is probably more realistic for larger businesses or those who are well established. The final method highlighted by respondents is to sell directly from the UK. Realistically this approach is the one which companies are most likely to adopt initially, as they
71

dip their toes in the water, but in the longer-term the first two methods offer a better opportunity to address the real needs of Indian customers. In terms of things that they would put on a ‘wish list’ to make it easier to trade with India, the top item singled out by 50% of the Export Council members who replied was a reduction in import tariffs. Sadly, high import tariffs can, potentially, present an insurmountable barrier to trade and, as our research shows, these remain a major business challenge for our BSIA members. We would certainly like to see tariffs reduced over time. The impact of tariffs can of course be mitigated through joint ventures. This ties-in with another area singled out in the survey, with 33% feeling that better links with Indian partners would really help their business. Beyond this,
72
May 2013
Considering the primary factors which are influencing buying decisions in the Indian market, Export Council members said that having the right business connections was the strongest element, in 60% of cases, with purchase price (40%) also featuring highly. Sadly, members can still find themselves under pressure to offer a high specification solution at a price comparable to a less capable system, something which is not an economical proposition in the long run. Going for a cut-price solution may seem appealing at first glance but units may fail in a matter of months leaving a major gap in capability. A case in point are instances where sub-standard dome cameras are deployed that are simply not designed to cope with the testing temperature and weather conditions
found across India. Despite these challenges, things are starting to change for the better where larger projects are concerned. Here through the right agents, integrators or end users, who understand the technical and operational advantages, there is real potential to move the agenda beyond initial purchase price to what is actually best placed to meet the specific security requirements. Growth Potential
So for the future it is likely that India will remain firmly in the sights of UK security businesses - with BSIA member companies at the forefront - as they seek to offer their world-leading expertise to local partners and customers in a country which, as one of the BRIC nations, alongside Brazil, Russia and China, is now firmly established amongst the fastest growing, and largest, of the so-called emerging economies. Economies that have become very much the engines for the global economy, a situation which shows no signs of changing any time soon.

We are addressing the customers and giving local touch through our people on the ground. Our team in India is very attentive to customer needs and that is driving the growth. We are also
It was the greatest MIPS we ever had. With 500 partners at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, we presented the concept to “Think Bigger”. It’s not just about big project deals but more related to where you are. Which segment you are addressing as a Milestone Solution Partner, Channel Partner, System Integrators Partner or other Ecosystem member. We want people to think smarter, be innovative and creative. Let’s think about the needs of each specific segment. It’s more of a cry for ‘let’s not be satisfied with what you have done, but think about how you can do better to service our customer base’. Is there a tactical shift in Milestone’s product strategy and organizational structure ?
Now Milestone has a new market strategy model in place; instead of looking at the number of cameras in installations, we are focusing on the features for managing the cameras, the number of sites and servers run on the system - whether the customer needs are complex or simple. The new organizational matrix at Milestone has divided the entire business into three segments:- a Corporate Business unit, a Professional Business unit and an Incubation unit. The Milestone Open Platform makes a busy highway!. And we don’t want to have to make trade
offs between the different needs. This company organization brings better focus for each segment. The Professional Business unit will take care of the mid range needs in the market. The Incubation unit will explore and develop new products and solutions based on multi platforms, cloud strategies and other innovative ideas for future adaptation. What is the future of the Open Platform concept?
The vision and concept of the Milestone open platform is getting even stronger. More people are adding Video Analytics, Voice Recognition, Access Control and other systems to the open platform. The many capabilities of operating with an open platform in the era of IP is powered by people’s interest in it. We are widening the scope of our open platform, for example by making ONVIF support for Milestone software so all camera manufacturers can be part of it. We are enabling smooth open platform support at the camera level; to manage all media data in one efficient framework and an Access Control framework to extend the platform further. This is different from what our competitors are doing, getting more vertically integrated. Milestone is strongly backing the concept of open platform by building it out even more. We aim to make it even broader and have more capabilities by enabling more ecosystem partners. The more companies who can use it and grow or improve their business with it, the more of a win-win scenario it is for everyone involved. 75
