JIMI

By Janie Hendrix and John McDermott

JIMI is the ultimate tribute to the greatest guitar player in rock and roll history, celebrating what would have been Jimi Hendrix’s 80th birthday on November 27, 2022. This comprehensive visual celebration is an official collaboration with Jimi’s sister, Janie Hendrix, and John McDermott of Experience Hendrix L.L.C. JIMI significantly expands on the authors’ previously published titles, including An Illustrated Experience, and features a new introduction by Janie, extensive biographical texts, and a trove of lesser known and never-before-published photographs, personal memorabilia, lyrics, and more. Additionally, JIMI includes quotations by legendary musicians, such as Paul McCartney, Ron Wood, Dave Grohl, and many more. Hendrix created revered classics such as “Purple Haze,” and “Voodoo Child.” His signature guitar playing, provocative songwriting, and charismatic performances have continued to inspire.

CARDI B

24

Cardi B bootstrapped her rise to the top. Before she took her rightful place as a rap star, Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar was a “regular, degular, shmegular girl from the Bronx,” as she puts it. The child of a Dominican father and Trinidadian mother. A dissatisfied downtown grocery cashier and college student studying history. A New York City stripper. A viral Instagram mastermind, known for her comedic clips and generous street smarts advice. An ex-stripper at the age of 23 with hundreds of thousands of followers. A breakout star on the 6th season of VH1’s reality show Love & Hip Hop. And eventually, a voice fusing her Latin America and AfroCaribbean heritage with pop to make global hits.

The only thing that’s changed about Cardi B is the amount of zero’s in her bank account. She’s just as salacious as the day she started. Her flow remains rambunctious and aggressive, like the city she hails from. Through the wins and love lessons, she candidly talks about both with no-hold-bars strength and humor. In 2017, after Cardi B signed to Atlanta Records with two mixtapes under her belt, it only took one bombastic single, her debut, “Bodak Yellow,” to put her at the top of the U.S. Billboard 100 charts. It made her the first female rapper to claim the top spot with a solo single since 1998, when Lauryn Hill released “Doo Wop (That Thing).” In 2018, the same year her debut album Invasion of Privacy was released, Cardi B had her first child, Kulture Kiari Cephus with rapper Offset of the Migos rap group. She has the most simultaneous singles on the Billboard U.S. Hot 100 for any female artist.

Cardi B once planned to become a history teacher. She’s a self-confessed American politics fanatic, often chiming in on current events, sharing her perspectives on colorism, social justice, women’s rights, and COVID-19. She has done all of this while becoming a fashion and beauty icon. She popped out of a vintage Mugler oyster shell dress like a pearl at the 2019 Grammy Awards. Then, she won Best Rap Album of the year.

AMANDA GORMAN

44

Amanda Gorman deeply understands her duty in this lifetime. She is a poet and activist called to change hearts and perspectives. As a messenger, she is asking us all to look. Look, in the midst of uncertainty, for hope in what still remains. She asks that we not lose sight of who we are. Gorman used herself as an example when she delivered her original poem, “The Hill We Climb,” at President Joe Biden’s inauguration:

“We, the successors of a country and a time where a skinny Black girl descended from

slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president, only to find herself reciting for one.”

Gorman was born in Los Angeles, where she became the first inaugural Youth Poet Laureate of the city. She then became the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate during her time studying sociology at Harvard.

Gorman has the ability to envision her destiny. She clearly and brightly tells you her future. Then we all watch it happen. During her last year of college, Gorman listened to Maya Angelou’s inauguration poem, “On the Pulse of Morning,” at the start of almost every day.

When Gorman stepped off the podium from reciting her own poem at the 2021 inauguration, she knew that she’d be back. She’s gone on record multiple times to say she’s running for president in 2036. Four years ago, she insisted to publishing houses that she was going to be the inaugural poet laureate and that it was important for the book to be out. Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem is finally out, and it’s a best seller.

Amanda Gorman aims to show up as a poet and activist in the spaces she occupies, from red carpets to magazine covers to stages. Her poems are messages on how she interprets life, justice, and freedom from a Black woman’s lens. She knows her own story is important enough to tell, and she understands how it may break others free. So, she tells it.
