Corita Kent’s Legacy through the Eyes of Twenty Artists and Writers • By the Corita Art Center

Twenty contemporary artists and writers reimagine Corita Kent’s iconic creative manifesto. Known for her vibrant and powerful serigraphs, Corita Kent left an equally important legacy through her teaching. In the late 1960s, she and her students at the Immaculate Heart College developed their Art Department Rules. From “Consider everything an experiment” to “Be happy whenever you can manage it,” these ten deceptively simple principles capture the magic of Corita’s approach to creativity, culture, and activism. In this volume, ten writers and ten artists look back at the rules and show us how vital and resonant they remain today. The wide-ranging roster of contributors includes Vashti Harrison, Lisa Congdon, Natacha Ramsay-Levi, Dan Paley, and Erin Jang.

Nature-Inspired Rituals to Nourish Your Life By Andi Eaton Alleman

Elemental is a beautiful book about disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with nature for better health and inner peace. Ancient humans had an intimate connection to nature— we lived by the cycles of the sun and the moon, followed the flow of water when determining where to settle, and planted and sowed according to the shifts in seasons. The five elements—fire, earth, water, air, and ether—reside in each of us and are the universe’s building blocks. In this richly illustrated book, Andi Eaton Alleman explores the energy and characteristics each element holds, and teaches you how to incorporate a balance of each into your daily wellness practices: meditation and breathwork to amplify your glow, rituals for grounding and balance, and simple homemade recipes and exercises for nourishment. As you explore each of the elements, you’ll learn how to let your body speak and become an active listener to what it has to say.

Crosswordese (n.): A set of words that occur more frequently as crossword puzzle answers than they do in daily life.

RECEIPT [Slip on a new piece of clothing? OTTO Mann (continued)

SPAR [Exercise one’s rights?], [Go a round with?], [Work on a canvas]

TRADING [Thing done by those in the pits?]

MORAL [Good]. [Point], [Storybook ending?], [End of story?], [Words to live by]

REVERIE [It might end with a start]

DRAW [Appeal], [Pick a card, any card], [No-win situation?], [Make a face?], [Take lots?], [Work on one’s figure?], [20-20, e.g.], [Engage in sketchy behavior?]

MIRED [Bogged down]

TIED [Even], Having no loose ends?], [Leaderless?], [Pulled some strings?], [Knotted up, say], [20-20, e.g.]

SAND [Ocean liner], [Beach blanket?], [Bank deposit?], [Take the edge off?], [Soft rock?]

HARD [Unlike a picnic?], [Herculean], [Like a Saturday crossword], [Knotty]

KIND [Class], [Like some souls or words], [Generous cousin?]

GOOF [Err], [Idle, with “off”]

IRKED [Cross], [Got the goat of], [Put out] humorous tone. For instance, FUN is crossed by RULE, an intersection of forces still at play in crosswords.

As solvers progressed, other pairs of answers presented interesting or amusing juxtapositions: SALES arrives right before RECEIPT and SPAR goes toe-to-toe with TRADING. MORAL, clued as [What we all should be], seems like a [Pipe dream] next to REVERIE. DRAW and TIED are MIRED together, which Wynne planted firmly in the SAND.

Wynne’s ironic empathy for his solvers’ position was evident when [What this puzzle is] proved to be HARD: probably the puzzle’s easiest answer, even if the joke was a real groaner.

The next week, a second Word-Cross was accompanied by a note from the creator: “The great interest shown in ‘Fun’s’ wordcross puzzle has prompted the puzzle editor to submit another of same KIND.”

A week after that, a slight but significant change to the instructions directed readers to “Find the Missing Cross Words.” The linguistic cross-up has been attributed to a typographical GOOF, but the flip-flop stuck: The fourth puzzle was rebranded “Fun’s CrossWord Puzzle.”

So it could be said that crosswordese predates even the word “crossword.” I like to imagine some poor schlub, IRKED but determinedly solving those early puzzles, deriding Wynne for using wordcrossese.

CROSSWORDESE

A Guide to the Weird and Wonderful Language of Crossword Puzzles • By David Bukszpan Crossword puzzles have a language all their own. This entertaining guide to grid lingo will improve your game while it fills in the mystery and history of this unique and playful idiom. Author David Bukszpan brings his deep word game knowledge and engaging educational style to this exploration of crosswordese and its evolution from antiquity to the age of LOL and LIZZO. Far more than a crossword puzzle lexicon, Crosswordese is full of fun entries, including rich sections on particular types of puzzle clues and answers from pop culture, sports, science, and more. Each chapter also includes a puzzle custom-made by the author and exclusive to the book! This is the perfect gift to help novices up their skills and reward veterans with a deeper appreciation of this delightfully quirky vocab.

[“Huh?”] WHAT It is, Why It’s Important, and How to Master It

Good NEWS That’s [Front Page Fill]

You’re Smarter Than You Thought

Whether you’re a veteran solver breezing through several puzzles a day or someone who’s just crossword-curious, this probably won’t come as NEWS: they have a way of making solvers question their own [Intelligence].

The wide range of [Information] solvers thought they possess can suddenly seem rather [Skinny] when faced with empty boxes. And even if solvers can [Kind of stand] being stumped by some [Word] or [Facts], [It gets old quickly]. No wonder, then, that many people’s initial forays into the cruciverse are [Kind of brief]. For a pastime that’s supposed to be a fun escape, [None of this is good].

News [___ flash]: [What’s going on] has little to do with gaps in one’s intellect or learning, but from unfamiliarity with a relatively small set of oft-repeated answers.

Novices might at first rejoice to learn that most crossword answers are only three or four letters long. But over the years, crosswords have compiled an impressive collection of rare words, names, abbreviations, contractions, prefixes, suffixes, foreign imports, and plenty of other linguistic [Extra stuff?], including many an antiquated [Time piece].

Let me offer some good [Tidings]: it’s natural for any or all of this regular [Morning paper fare] to be [Something you didn’t know]. Just as it’s natural for solvers to have a few choice four-letter words of their own in response to first encountering them.
