SelfMadeHero Spring 2019

Our mission at SelfMadeHero is simple: to publish ground-breaking and beautiful work by authors and artists from across the globe, from the quirky and humorous to the political and profound. We are proud to bring readers graphic novels and visual narratives that provoke, entertain, inspire and inform. This February, we publish Frantz Duchazeau’s Lomax: Collectors of Folk Songs, which tells the remarkable story of John and Alan Lomax, whose expedition through the American South in 1933 resulted in an archive of field recordings that would change the course of popular music. March sees the release of a landmark work of graphic non-fiction: Guantánamo Kid by Jérôme Tubiana and Alexandre Franc. This urgent, absorbing and intense graphic novel tells the story of Mohammed El-Gharani, one of the Bay’s youngest detainees. Also published in March, two works of original fiction: Blossoms in Autumn by Zidrou and Aimée de Jong is a masterful exploration of growing old and falling in love, while Memoirs of a Book Thief by Alessandro Tota and Pierre Van Hove is an energetic and unforgettable drama set in 1950s Paris. The latest book from New York Times-bestselling author Box Brown, published in April, charts the fascinating history of marijuana. Cannabis: An American History is a timely and persuasive study of the drug’s complex relationship to culture, politics and the United States legal system. Another April release, Lewis Trondheim and Stéphane Oiry’s atmospheric and intense crime drama Maggy Garrisson, introduces readers to an unconventional and instantly likeable heroine. Finally, in May, our Art Masters series continues with a graphic biography of the archetypal New York artist: Jean-Michel Basquiat. In Basquiat, Julian Voloj and Søren Glosimodt Mosdal paint a scintillating portrait of a troubled man and a dazzling, provocative artist.

night is taking place and, when one luminary suggests giving the floor to an unknown, Daniel impulsively puts himself forward. Under pressure, he recites not one of his own surrealist poems but an obscure piece of Italian verse he’s certain no one will know. It’s plagiarism – but it’s a triumph. At last, success. Daniel’s recital marks his entrance into the Parisian avant garde: a band of cultured rogues and pseudo-revolutionaries for whom life is a playground for art and planning a robbery has as much value as writing a book. In this milieu, the wine is good and the girls are beautiful – but can success last if it is founded on theft?

Alessandro Tota is an award-wining comics writer. He is the author of numerous children’s books and graphic novels. Born in Italy, he lives in Paris. Pierre Van Hove is an illustrator and graphic artist, and the co-founder of production company Enfin.

From ballads to work songs, ragtime to blues, the songs collected by the Lomax family on this and subsequent expeditions formed an archive that preserved the heritage of American folk music. More than that, these “field recordings” changed the course of popular music, influencing the blues-driven rock ’n’ roll of the 1950s and the “folk revival” of the 1960s. Frantz Duchazeau’s graphic novel is at once a fascinating portrait of 1930s America and a captivating story about a father and son who, despite many differences in outlook and approach, were united by a commitment to cultural preservation and a passion for music.

Frantz Duchazeau is the author of numerous graphic novels. Born in Angoulême, France, he now lives in Paris.

for the Communist Party was at once a powerful critique

of capitalism and a radical call to arms. It remains the most incisive introduction to the ideas of Communism and the most lucid explanation of its aims. Much of what Marx and

young boy flees a town ruled by violence and ravaged by drought. Before him lies a lifeless

expanse of baked earth; beyond that, the unknown.

ISBN 978-1-910593-47-9 £14.99

Hunted by a merciless gang of townsfolk, the boy is illequipped and unprepared. He has no food, no water. He is tormented by nightmares. One night, he crosses paths with an elderly goatherd – and from that moment, nothing will be the same again. At once both bleak and hauntingly beautiful, Jesús Carrasco and Javi Rey’s Out in the Open is a high-stakes dystopian drama about finding humanity in a world torn apart by violence.

Javi Rey was born in Brussels but grew up and lives in Barcelona. After graduating from university, he studied at the prestigious Catalan illustration school Escola Joso. He is the author of Adelante (written by Frank Giroud) and Un maillot pour l’Algérie. Jesús Carrasco was born in Badajoz, Spain, and now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.
