SelfMadeHero Autumn 2019

Our mission at SelfMadeHero is simple: to publish ground-breaking and beautiful work by authors and artists from across the globe, from the quirky and humorous to the political and profound. We are proud to bring readers graphic novels and visual narratives that provoke, entertain, inspire and inform. This September, we publish Julie Birmant and Clément Oubrerie’s Isadora, which captures the remarkable life and scandalous times of the “Mother of Modern Dance”, Isadora Duncan. David Rault’s ABC of Typography, also released in September, is an endlessly insightful graphic guide to the history of typography, covering everything from Sumerian pictographs to Gutenberg, the Bauhaus and beyond. The same month sees the release of Frantz Duchazeau’s graphic biography Mozart in Paris, which explores a crucial episode from the composer’s formative years: when, at 22, he left Salzburg to spend a dramatic six months in the city of lights. Out in October, Mikel by Mark Bellido and Judith Vanistendael is a compelling and emotive fiction based on Bellido’s experiences as a bodyguard in the Basque country. In The Dance of Death, also released in October, The Guardian’s Martin Rowson reimagines Hans Holbein’s classic series of woodcuts for the 21st century, and in doing so reminds us that no one, no matter their rank or position, can escape the great leveller, Death. Rob Davis’s British Comic Award-winning The Motherless Oven and its followup, The Can Opener’s Daughter, raised more questions than they answered. The trilogy’s concluding volume, The Book of Forks, out in October, promises to explain everything.

n 1778, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart leaves Salzburg for Paris.

The French capital promises to liberate the 22-year-old from

the suffocating grip of his father, and from a city that is unable to

accommodate his genius. But there is no grand entrance for the

ISBN 978-1-910593-72-1

former child prodigy. When Mozart arrives in Paris, he is cash-

£14.99

strapped and unknown and his French is poor. His mentor, the critic Baron von Grimm, introduces him to a number of Parisian nobles. But recognition is hard-won, and at times the French court appears indifferent to Mozart’s talents and disapproving of his spontaneity. Tracing the composer’s six-month stay in the city of lights, Mozart in Paris dramatises the confrontation between a sparkle-eyed genius and mundane reality. Frantz Duchazeau spotlights a frustrating yet formative period of the composer’s life — and in doing so creates a living, breathing portrait of a man whose music, as Einstein famously said, “was so pure that it seemed to have been ever-present in the universe, waiting to be discovered by the master.”

Frantz Duchazeau was born in Angoulême and settled in Paris in 1993. He contributed numerous short stories and a series, ‘Une Vie de Chiens’ (with Christian Godard), to Spirou. He is the author of a number of graphic novels, including Gilgamesh (with Gwen de Bonneval).

prints are the epitome of Pop Art: witty, gimmicky and

unafraid of repetition. Obsessed with consumerism and the cult of celebrity, Warhol exalted the “surface of things” – and yet he was a man of deep complexity. In Andy, Typex captures the remarkable life of the king of Pop Art, from his working-class upbringing in Pittsburgh to the dizzying heights of his celebrity. Spanning a period that began with the “talkies” and ended with the advent of house music, it is also a memorable portrait of 20thcentury pop culture and the stars who defined it.

Taking in Warhol’s early career as a commercial illustrator, his relationship with the Velvet Underground and the development of his own instantly recognisable style, Andy is an exhilarating portrait of a transcendent artist and a master self-publicist.
