Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a cultural phenomenon. First published in 1865, it has never been out of print and has been translated into 170 languages. But why does it have such enduring and universal appeal for both adults and children? This book explores the global impact of Alice across art, design and performance from the nineteenth century to today. It shows how Wonderland has been re-imagined and reinterpreted by each new generation: from the original illustrations by John Tenniel to artwork by Peter Blake and Salvador Dalí, and from the 1951 Disney movie to Tim Burton’s latest interpretation. This beautiful, playful publication also includes specially commissioned interactive illustrations by awardwinning artist Kristjana S. Williams, as well as insights from an array of cultural stars – from Stephen Fry to Tim Walker, Naomi Campbell to Heston Blumenthal – into the profound influence of Alice on their life and work.

The kimono is the ultimate symbol of Japan, revered within the country as the embodiment of national culture and regarded internationally as an exotic fascination. The iconic garment is often viewed as traditional, unchanging and timeless, but this book counters that conception, presenting kimono as highly dynamic and fashionable items of dress. The cultural and sartorial significance of the kimono is explored in historical and contemporary contexts, both in Japan and in the West, where its impact on clothing styles has been felt since the seventeenth century. Beautifully illustrated, the book features over 250 kimono and kimono-inspired garments from the V&A and collections around the world, revealing its sartorial influence on pop stars from David Bowie to Björk and examining the ways in which fashion designers such as Issey Miyake, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen have reworked its legacy. Anna Jackson is the Keeper of the Asian Department at the V&A.

Many of the most beautiful Renaissance portraits, botanical illustrations and landscape paintings are watercolours. Spanning the period 1450–1640, this book considers these diverse artworks together, combining 150 paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Holbein, Nicholas Hilliard and Anthony Van Dyck, as well as exquisite works by less well-known figures such as Giulio Clovio, Joris Hoefnagel, Jacopo Ligozzi and Jacques le Moyne. It highlights the intellectual breadth and artistic quality of the Renaissance watercolour, a major art form that reached as far afield as the New World and the court of the Mughal emperor.

The Portrait Miniature Painted Likenesses
n Britain the term ‘watercolour’ is only too often considered as little more than a synonym for the technique of landscape painting in transparent wash developed between the 1770s and the 1850s by J.R. Cozens, Thomas Girtin, J.S. Cotman and J.M.W. Turner. Analogous earlier works, notably those made around 1500 by Albrecht Dürer or over a century later by Anthony Van Dyck are typically regarded as harbingers of this ‘classic’ English method, while images in opaque ‘body colour’, including those in illuminated manuscripts, are dismissed as not ‘true’ watercolours. This distinction is artificial and unhelpful, as watercolour is actually a medium - pigment dissolved in water and bound with a sticky agent - which has been practiced in various ways since classical antiquity throughout the world, from Han Dynasty China to Aztec Mexico. Moreover, some illuminators employed translucent wash and others opaque pigments, or used both together, as did Dürer and even the canonical English watercolourists mentioned above. The present exhibition will explore the portrayal in water-based media during the Renaissance of scenery and places, plants and animals, and people: three portentous genres which reached as far afield as the New World and the court of the Mughal emperor. Watercolours at South Kensington As the Victoria and Albert Museum is home to the national collections of watercolours and portrait miniatures, it provides an especially apt venue for such a revisionist project. The museum’s origins lie in the Great Exhibition at London in 1851, which was followed by the Exposition Universelle at Paris in 1855. Paintings scarcely featured in the spectacle at Hyde Park, but four years

In this intriguing insight into the work and history of a museum, V&A Director and historian Dr Tristram Hunt brings together ten renowned V&A curators to tell the stories behind ten of their most treasured objects. ‘Tipu’s Tiger’ (an almost life-size wooden semiautomaton mauling a European soldier), the ‘Great Bed of Ware’ (an Elizabethan bed for 8 people) and a Shakespeare First Folio are among the featured highlights whose route to the V&A collections are entertainingly revealed.

Through these stories, this insightful history of museum curation – a world of careful study and sometimes remarkable fortuity – shows how the priorities of a museum are shaped and change over time.

Enamel Portrait Miniatures: Masterpieces from the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection Charlotte Johnson NEW: May £10.00 HB ISBN 9781851779932 165 × 165 mm, 144 pp 70 col BIC: ACK HISTORY OF ART First produced in the early seventeenth century, enamel miniatures offer a window into the social and political worlds in which they were made. Enamels were particularly valued for their durability – there was no better medium for a portable display of allegiance, or for keeping the likeness of a loved one close. I S B N 978-1-85177-993-2

Creating a miniature in enamel was described in the eighteenth century as difficult, laborious and complicated. Before a practitioner could express their artistic skill, they must first master the rigorous science of the process; only a handful of remarkably gifted makers were able to create the exquisite miniature portraits held in the V&A’s superlative Gilbert Collection. With stunning new photography of 50 miniatures from this collection, this book explores the history and making of these beautiful objects. Charlotte Johnson is a former Assistant Curator of the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection at the V&A.

With Tongue in Chic Ernestine Carter NEW: May £6.99* EB ISBN 9781838510060
Readers of The Sunday Times knew that the fashion journalist Ernestine Carter could spot a winner from a mile away, whether at a Paris couturier or a boutique on London’s King’s Road. Apocryphally, whatever she praised on Sunday was sold out by Monday lunchtime.
BIC: BGFA FASHION & TEXTILES
In her entertaining and informative autobiography, Carter recalls her illustrious career as Fashion Editor at Harper’s Bazaar during the 50s, describing her attendance at haute couture shows throughout Europe, including the exhilaration of seeing Dior’s ‘New Look’ for the first time. Her insightful commentary on designers and fashion continued into the 60s as women’s editor, and later associate editor at The Sunday Times, where she backed a rising generation of British designers including Mary Quant and Jean Muir.
