past
- The stairs surrounding the exterior of the
building are inspired by local church steps, embracing the idea of community that is so prevalent in Italian culture and acting as an all-hour gathering space.
present - The meeting room looks out into the main
seating tasting area, framed by the central stairs that allow flow between time moments. The present is the space surrounded by the past and looking toward the future.

materials; the strong stone of the past, the living wood of the present, and the transparent glass of the future. The arch shape of the bar area mimics the grand arch of the Piazza and the more structural elements, such as the glass framing and central stairs, pull from existing elements of the Antinori winery, linking the brand and the pavilion.

Back to the beginning: Education coming full circle.
The Little White School House was first built in 1916 to accommodate extra students from the emerging school system. The school house has seen many changes over the years but still stands strong in its original location. Today the school house showcases the history of Valley, WA.
After hosting a community meeting, it was determined by the community that the goal would be to turn the little white school house into a heritage museum. The new museum was to show the history of the town, but also act as a focal point, creating renewed interest in the Valley’s culture while also drawing attention from passing tourists.
From geography to landscape to town growth, the Little White School House explores the elements of the past to educate those of the present to help imagine the future.

exhibits time line
The exhibit is a permanent instillation that runs the length of the building. It shows the chronological development of Valley, starting with prehistoric times. The time line ends in a chalkboard about the future, allowing visitors to leave their individual mark and encouraging them to take the knowledge they’ve gained with them into the future.
immersion
exhibit The replicates the school house when it originally opened, allowing visitors to partake in a hands on experience of the past. All of the past graduating classes are also on display to show of the important role the school house has played over time.
moment in time is
a rotating exhibit. It pulls from the key time periods found on the time line and goes into greater depth, with interactive elements and more space for item displays. This space can also be used to showcase visiting exhibits. The new ipad stand provides an electronic database of the items in the museum for further information.
memory both
The allows members of the community to digitally record their stories about their time in Valley. This database can then be accessed by visitors, giving them first hand accounts of life in Valley.

Phase 1 works with existing site and the existing portables. Elements such as signage and sculptural elements, done by local artists, are added along the main road to draw attention to the school house located up on the hill. The rendering also shows how parts of the different phases can be combined, such as including the deck from phase 2 with the site plane of phase 1. The separate elements can be combined to meet the budget that is available at the time.

Phase 2 expands more on the existing building by creating a deck. This creates more space in the basement for a larger multi-purpose space. The deck creates a space for the community to gather and socialize, even if not visiting the museum. The site further develops with the removal of the portables. In their place, a large horse and wagon ,that acts as a slide, is installed. This piece can become an icon for the town, memorable to those who pass through. The discovery pit becomes an extension of the museum with hands on activities.

retreat writer’s Crags and Crev-
The inspiration comes from by Jane Frank. The structure of the light moment pulled from idea of different planes and the play of positive and negative spaces between them. The back wall of the moment creates new texture within the light and mimics the texture seen in the painting. The changing light creates a new physical and emotional identity.

The resulting retreat space was designed as a get-a-way for a writer and his spouse. The retreat plays with light, providing different spaces of light, that provide new points of inspiration as the light shifts throughout the day. The large glass doors open to a patio space, making the outside part of the interior. The space is different than the normal structure of everyday, creating a open space, that is flexible and allows for creativity and inspiration.

group collaborative site plan created by team member
The old well in the center of the main courtyard inspired the complex. And just like a well, S’Orsola has many layers, that ebb and flow through out time. Historically, the well is the center of the community, creating a source of social gathering, nutrition, and growth.
3rd floor interior
1st floor interior
The three story building located along Via San Orsola has changed from a convent (where Mona Lisa was rumored to have been buried) to a tobacco producing factory but stands empty today. The new design of S’Orsola focuses on filling the gap in the existing social-economic structure, revitalizing a forgotten building, and connecting the space back to the community.

The lounge and bar area of the restaurant open to the surrounding city, acting as a central gathering place, for tourists and locals alike. The level changes help break up the space into smaller, more human scale areas. The simple materials make the space comfortable and inviting using a neutral color scheme and clean edges.
