The whole story is pretty simple and plain. As usual. You’re a skateboarder, and you want to skate. Sometimes you’ve to built something to skate with your friends, and sometimes a miniramp in an old greenhouse can be a nice starting point. Than with your friends you start daydreamin’ or drunkdreamin’ about transform a mini ramp into a bowl... and after some years you’ve a perfect bowl and you organize the first indoor invitational bowl contest of your country. The Knodel “Know Them“ Contest was like this. Simple as skateboarding is! Words Guido Bendotti Photos Davide Biondani

We called some of our friends in Italy, and then we start looking for some new friend from other countries, and in a couple of months we’ve a full list a shredders ready to skate our new wooden bowl. Friends from Italy, France, Switzerland and Austria; everybody was pumped to skate, have fun, get some money and participate to something special. You’ve always read about the infamous “Backyard Contest” that was organized in the ‘80s. This contest was pretty much the same. Some friends with a big passion, a nice place to skate, and a lot of patience to organize something… something so funny and simple that the sponsors didn’t wanted to be part of. So what should we have done? Stop? Naaaa. We opened our pockets we self-assessed ourself and raise the prize money to 2.200 euros. We’re not rich; we work and skate and party like you and your sister. And with or without money true skateboarders come anyway, and skate their asses off.

The best thing was that all the skaters were involved with the event: if you didn’t skate in your run (jam format) you had to judge your friends, and the skaters themselves decided who the winner was. So nobody was upset with the judging system. Since first hits it was pretty clear that favorites were Daniel Cardone, Igor Fardin, Julian Benoliel and Alex Giraud, but all the skaters have throw down a lot of tricks and skated like animals. Everybody had fun and understood the spirit of the event: some skater built a ramp, find some money and organize an invitational for the skaters and the friendly media guys providing a place where to stay (read hotel room for everybody), food and tons of beers for two days… The only thing skaters had “to do” was: skating and have fun.

Music blasting, crazy tricks were landed, like nosegrind on the cradle’s pool coping by Julien Benoliel, or 5-0 to fakie of Danny Galli on the same place. Impossible to forget Daniel Cardone’s amazing lines and biggest airs ever… everywhere…every time… long fs ollies, fs wallrides head high, bombing into the ramp from the upper deck. Typical Cardone style. Impossible to forget the style of the Prince Simone Bertozzi, that skates with so much elegance that you want to kill him or the perseverance and the pride of Simone Verona, that every time put his life on the line to progress with his skateboarding. Kevin Blasser skated like an animal with his Warriors friend, Igor Fardin, the ultimate skate machine: he can skate everything, he’s a natural and you con’t stop him. Danny Galli has an energy and a bag of tricks and a “professional” approach to skateboarding that make me proud of him. Bad luck for Daniel Cardone and Julien that broke themselves with some of the most insane stunts ever seen…stand strong! Fabio Bottelli has been the surprise of the contest. We knew that the kid can skate (and we knew he’s a party animal too), but for this contest he was almost serious, and he landed every combo lip trick know to man, flyin’ around and grindin’ every inch of the coping… and the same night he puked tons of alchol. Priceless.

Alex Giraud won, ‘cause he was unstoppable, and skated at a level that a lot of us can only dream of: he’s solid, he’s stylish and he know how to skate every transition you put in front of him. The event was viewable via streaming, and a lot of people enjoy it and the response, online, was amazing. It took us 4 months to organize the contest, and in 4 hours the comp was finished, so everybody chilled, skated and went to party with no stress, some money in the pocket and a beer in the hand. We can’t ask for more! Good skateboarders, a lot of wood, a lot of work…and one of the best contest ever organized. Stay tuned… ‘cause Knodel Bowl is boilin’ more stuff for you !
