Learning Tips for SIT English 1. SIT students learn their English slowly and surely First they learn to listen to technical language. Then they learn to speak the specific technical language. Finally, they can successfully read and write their technical language. 2. Listen to English every day Listen to English radio. Watch English TV. Go to English movies. Use online lessons. 3. Make an English/ESL friend Make up conversations. Practice dialogues. Use many ESL textbooks. 4. Read English stories Start with children's storybooks. Try ESL readers. Read advertisements, signs and labels. Try EnglishClub.com for Young Learners. 5. Write down new words Start a vocabulary (new word) notebook. Write words in alphabetical order (A...B...C...). Model Plan For Studying English

Learning English at SIT Target Achievement Level: BTEC Distinction English/Assignment & Project Link Note: This is just an example of one student's independent study plan for one month. You should make your own personal plan. Make sure to include study of all of the skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Week 1 Sunday

Read an English story. Do exercises. Summarize the story in my journal.

Monday

Write a journal entry about my weekend. Review some English spelling rules.

Tuesday

Study prepositions of place. Be sure to include Clarity lessons revision

Wednesday

Read the useful phrases used in a telephone conversation. Write out a simple conversation I would have with my best friend.

Thursday

Review the prepositions of place that I learned. Practie talking (out loud) about the placement of objects in my bedroom. If there are any objects in my room that I don't know the name for, look them up in a dictionary. Record them in my own personal dictionary. Be sure to check my Clarity files

Friday

Listen to one hour of English radio. Don't write anything down. Just listen.

Saturday

Review all of the new vocabulary I have learned this week. Write a story using as many of the words as I can.

Week 2

Sunday

Practice reading the "Developing Discussion Skills" section in my student Workbook. If I have difficulty doing them, review the English lessons I studied last week.

Monday

Go to the grammar section of Clarity at SIT. Choose one exercise that I have difficulty with (for example: present perfect). Complete the assignment and score a minimum of 85%.

Tuesday

Rent an English movie. Choose a movie that does not have Arabic subscripts. Watch the movie without writing anything down.

Wednesday

Read an advertisement in the Gulf News. Look up (and record) any of the vocabulary I don't know. In my Mastering New Vocabulary worksheet. Complete the worksheet.

Thursday

Schedule a ESL partner practice session on the telephone. Talk for at least half an hour using only English. Keep notes in front of me and try to use the telephone phrases I've learned.

Friday

Watch the English movie again. This time stop and start the film when I don't understand something. Look up and record at least ten English words and try to understand them in context.

Saturday

Read a short passage on the Technology that I study. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Engineering and search for my Technology.

Week 3 Sunday

Review all of the vocabulary I learned last week. Write a letter to an English friend or teacher using as many of these words as I can.

Monday

Listen to the radio for one hour. Choose a song I like and try to find the lyrics online by typing a key phrase from the song, or the musician's name into a search engine (example: Google search . . . )

Tuesday

Read about the history of a famous Engineer. Look up and record any words that I don't know. Use the Internet to help with research. Ask your BTEC teacher for suggestions.

Wednesday

Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engineering . . . Read about the history of engineering. What new vocabulary can you learn and study?

Thursday

Take a break this weekend.

Friday

Break Day!

Saturday

Spend an hour or two doing online listening exercises. Your teacher can give you web sites.

Week 4

Sunday

Test myself on all of the vocabulary I have learned in the past three weeks. Write out 25 words/ phrases from my English/Arabic Dictionary and write them on small slips of paper. Put the slips in a hat and pick out one at a time. Try to make a complete sentence using each word. Speak out loud.

Monday

Spend one hour doing puzzles on the internet. Record any new vocabulary that I learn. Get an internet site from your teacher.

Tuesday

Work on some dictation exercises. Write out 20 words that I often have difficulty spelling. Review them before bed.

Wednesday

Read a short story (out loud) . . . take suggestions from your teacher or classmates. Write the 10 most difficult words in your Student List at the back of this workbook..

Thursday

Listen to English music that you like for at least one hour. Use the radio or Internet. Don't write anything down. Just relax.

Friday

Convert a passage from my favorite Arabic website into English. Invite a friend over to work on this task (speak in English only).

Saturday
