T

he Men and Women’s Opens Divisions were filled with outstanding games that one would be jumping out of their seats for. With tough tie breaker games and extreme athleticism, the handball games brought the best out of all the players and tested their limits.

Stephen Cooney from the New York Athletic Club wins the Men’s Open Finals Originally from Ireland, and now representing handball globally in the New York Athletic Club, Stephen Cooney is a dominant force that cannot be stopped. Being the first seed in the Men’s Open division, Cooney did not disappoint and remained on top. His first match

against Jerome Santerre was tough and Cooney barely won with the score of 21-18. Despite his tough first game, he swept through the second game and won the match with the score of 21-6. Determined to win the quarter-finals, he defeated Jai Ragoo with a big statement of 21-6 in game 1, and 21-3 in game 2. By the time Cooney reached his semifinals match against Jurell Bastidas, his momentum soared, and he defeated Bastidas with a score of 21-13 and 21-5. The finals match was a game that spectators all came to watch. Stephen Cooney‘s spectacular win streak came to an end when Tyree Bastidas defeated him in game 1, scoring 21-12. Cooney bounced back in game 2, however, stronger and more determined that ever before, and defeated Bastidas with a shocking score of 21-6. Both players fought for the championships and Cooney claimed the title, winning the quickest match of the day with a score of 11-1.

Shirley Chen Takes Home the Championships for the Women’s Small Ball Singles Open Shirley Chen is a player to watch out for. Her athleticism and sharp focus in handball has brought her to the top. In a round robbins match, Shirley faced her first opponent, junior player, Shkysi Cummings. Shkysi just graduated from high school and took on the challenge to player in the Women’s division, but Shirley Chen was just too strong to be defeated, winning a big difference of 21-4. With a better game plan, Shkysi went into game 2, scoring three times the amount she had in game 1, but Shirley fought even harder and closed game 2 with the score of 21-12. Shirley’s game against Amanda Blanchard proved just how powerful of a handball player she is. She takes on Amanda and defeated her with an astonishing 21-4 in game 1 and took home the championships in game 2, with an even better score of 21-3.

Harry Mellis YMCA Handball Program &

Harry Mellis YMCA Program The Harry Mellis YMCA Program is a junior handball program offered every year at the West Side YMCA. The program happens every Tuesday at 4:30pm-6:30pm and starts in October, continuing until the PSAL Handball season starts. Players who have never played four-wall handball attended this program routinely after their first attendance and we encourage you to come!

Jim Jacobs YMCA Scholarship Every year, ICHA awards YMCA Junior Scholarships to top junior handball players who demonstrate outstanding academic and athletic performance. The scholarship is a city-wide YMCA membership that allows players access to all YMCA gym facilities in New York City. This scholarship helps the continuation and expansion of a player’s handball skills and to apply, fill out Page 9.

Jim Jacobs YMCA Scholarship Registration Form Junior Volunteer Form Open Enrollment Period: September 1, 2018 – December 31, 2018 YMCA Membership is a one-year conditional membership subject to review every three months by the ICHA Board of Directors. 27th Annual ICHA / Berkowitz II High School Spring Meet consistent outstanding performance, Poon won the championships for the Boy’s 17 & Under Singles division.

Timothy Mei Soared Through the Boy’s 19 & Under A Finals

Kevin Poon defeated Ray Lu in the Boy’s 17 Under Small Ball Singles Finals BY MICHELLE HE

ASONEOFTHEBIGGESTDIVISIONSof all the Inner City Handball Association tournaments, the Boy’s 17 and Under division was filled with old and new competitive players that never failed to demonstrate their best talent and skills to fight for a championships title. As one of the top junior players, Kevin Poon took on the challenge to face an entire bracket of 34 players in the 17 and Under Boy’s Singles division. Poon went through the first 2 brackets with ease, the first game being a jaw dropping 21-0 against Gurjeet Gargaria. The semi-finals was when the real challenge began for Poon, when he had to compete against his brother, Steven Poon.

Despite their brotherhood, Kevin showed no mercy against Steven and defeated him with a score of 21-13. The fight did not get easier for Kevin, but rather much harder in the next match against another top player, from Francis Lewis High School, Danny Huang. Poon might have struggled more in this match, but it did not stop him from sprinting around the court as if his life depended on it. His determination came into light when he won the match with a great score of 2116. The finals match was an unexpected turn out when one of the arguably top 3 junior players of his age group, Ray Lu, made too many unforced errors against Poon. Poon’s shots were too difficult to return and with a

Playing in the Boy’s 19 and Under Singles division in this tournament, he went against David Kim, from High School of Telecommunications of Art and Sciences, and started the bracket off with an easy 21-4 win. Also a familiar face to ICHA tournaments, from Aviation High School, Alex Ayala was the next challenge for Mei. They continuously battled for the semi-finals win, but Mei ultimately overpowered Ayala and moved on to the finals with a score of 21-14. After all the years that Mei competed, the championships was just within the reach of his hands and the last opponent he had to get pass was Carlos Gonzalez from Aviation High School. Although

the finals is where a player usually expects to be the most exhausted, that was not the case for Mei. He was able to beat Gonzalez quickly with a great achievement of 21-4.

Not only will you avoid points being deducted for misconduct, your game will be more enjoyable. HERE ARE A FEW SUGGESTIONS: 1. Lose with honor by shaking your opponent’s hands. 2. Respect the referees and their calls. Remember you can appeal if you disagree with a call. 3. Play fairly and be honest about all of your actions. 4. Avoid trash talking to your opponent or partner.

n June 14, 2018 the Inner City Handball Association hosted

and sponsored the 2018 USHA Junior One-Wall Nationals at Coney Island Brooklyn, NY. The tournament drew 106 teen participants from the five boroughs of New York City and one lone four-wall Californian. With the sometimes unpredictable weather, Team ICHA, consisting of Danielle Daskalakis, Jenny Florabell Lee, Lian Chin, Bryan Lucero, Steven Woo, Spenser Sui, Isaiah Hong, Shkysi Cummings, and Shnae Cummings were able to complete the event in one day. Speaker’s Cup (formerly Mayor’s Cup) Handball Tournament The Cummings Sister Rise in the Boy’s 19 & Under Doubles BY MICHELLE HE

SHKYSI AND SHNAE CUMMINGS have taken Junior handball to a whole new level by joining the Boy’s 19 & Under Doubles. On the other end, Ray Lu and Gary Luk do not fail to surprise us to make it to the top of their division, especially when they’re a team. The Cummings sisters faced Henry Santana and Alex Ayala in the quarter-finals and the game lasted for an eternity as both teams fought for the win, volleying back and forth. Everyone’s jaws dropped when they heard the score was 20-20, with the Cummings sisters serving, and it didn’t take long for nearly all spectators of the tournament to be watching that game. Fighting for that final volley, the Cummings sisters took the point and won the match! The same story happened when they face the Junior Nationals Small Ball Doubles Finalists, Danny Huang and Mark Sacoto. Despite Huang and Sacoto’s title, the Cummings sisters did not budge and defeated them in the semi-finals. They have proven to be a strong team that can take on anyone.

While they have proven their capabilities by defeating all the previous teams, the Cummings sister’s real final challenge was against arguably the strongest junior boy’s team out there, Ray Lu and Gary Luk. The Cummings fought hard to keep the volley going, with Shnae volleying and Shkysi making the kills. Ray and Gary, however, were just too difficult to defeat and they won scoring 21-9.

The Battle of the Bastidas Brothers

The Bastidas brothers face each other in the finals and after a tough battle between strong volleys and shots, Tyree surpassed Jurell by two points, winning 25-23.

The Bastidas brothers made it to the top once again in the Men’s Opens division, facing each other in the finals. Tyree Bastidas defeated his opponents with a progressively tough battle. He faced James Flaherty in the quarterfinals and won with a score of 2510. In the semi-finals, the game was extremely close between Bastidas and Cesar Sala, but Bastidas overpowered

On the other side of the bracket, Jurell Bastidas progressively got better as well and he made his way to the finals. He won his first match with a score of 25-10 against Adam Gittlitz and defeated Steven Woo in the semi-finals with a score of 25-18.

2018 USHA / ICHA Junior Big Blue Nationals / Adult Singles Championships Dan Pitre Rises from the Junior to the Adult Division

rom Ridgewood, NY, Dan Pitre has been a recurring top junior for ICHA tournaments for years and he has taken the next step to compete with the adults this year in the Men’s Opens Division. Pitre’s first match against Jefferson Zamora from Ozone Park, NY, was his first example to demonstrate his high level skill development. Even though the first match was relatively close, Pitre won 21-16. As if winning with 21-16 wasn’t enough, Pitre pushed himself even further and defeated his quarter-finals opponent, Jared Yu, with an even lower score of 21-13. Pitre doesn’t stop there, and when he faces Cesar Sala, a well known player in the adult division, he made a bold statement by leaving Sala at only 5 points scored. The finals between Pitre and Isaac Clovis was the closest match for Pitre of the day at 21-17. Pitre has proven to be a top player and we have just witnessed a rising star of 2018.

Amber Tan is the Next Star of the Girl’s Divisions

Jeanpierre Garcia and Jose Quiroz are the Next Top Players

From Francis Lewis High School, Amber Tan has been one of the top female players and she proved exactly that in the Girl’s 19 & Under division.

From Aviation High School, Jeanpierre Garcia and Jose Quiroz are the new players to watch out for in the junior divisions.

Amber left all her opponents under 10 points and and it is amazing to see her capabilities on the court. Her left angle serves against her opponents were difficult to return and her strong power was unmatchable.

With a bye, Quiroz and Garcia moved straight into the semi-finals and faced against Jimmy Lam and Leo Su. Lam and Su fought hard, but it wasn’t enough to win against Quiroz and Garcia.

She left Emily Wang with a score of 7 in the quarter-finals, and Caddie Lai with a score of 5 in the semi-finals. The finals was almost just as easy and she defeated Iffie Bai at 21-8.

The finals was a tough one between Quiroz and Garcia, and Shuquan Huang and Justin Zhen. They downed each other continuously throughout the match, but Quiroz and Garcia performed just slightly better than the latter team and took home the championships with a score of 21-16.

All players have shown great potential for their success in tournaments and the ICHA team looks forward to seeing what they can do next year. If they’re this good at this young, who knows what they can do in the future. We will see next year!

Isaiah Hong reached the 64s division in the Male Singles 4-Wall Singles C. He made it all the way to the Finals in the Male Singles One-Wall Small Ball B division and the SemiFinals in the Male Doubles OneWall Small Ball Opens division.

“It was my first time playing against Joe and Willie! Never faced them in Nationals or anything like that. I had to use my left hand a lot because I injured my right arm the day before. Steven also showcased his all-around command of the sport, making it to the Quarter Finals of the Men’s FourWall A Singles, playing a tough game against former California collegiate star, Carlos Flores. Steven forced a tie-break after finding his groove in the second game, where he used his ceiling game and younger legs to create back wall opportunities for himself. Steven caused quite a scene with the Atlanta handball contingent, with Vince M. calling Steven his “new favorite handball player.” Steven made it all the way to the 16s in the Male Doubles 4-Wall Small Ball A, Quarter Finals in the Male Singles 4-Wall Small Ball A, SemiFinals in the Male Singles OneWall Small Ball Open, and a great achievement of Finals in the Male Doubles One-Wall Small Ball Open. “My experience with Willy and Joe felt exciting and very vivid. Willy and Joe helped and gave me advice to help me grow as a player. 11th ICHA Worlds Team for the 2021 The next Worlds Championships in 2021 will be held in one of the major countries of handball, Ireland. ICHA is recruiting junior players who are willing to dedicate their time to handball and are eager to train hard for the next 3 years for this competition. New York Handball Hall of Fame To recognize and memorialize the history of the game of handball in the State of New York. To acknowledge and celebrate those individuals who successfully competed and attained the game’s highest honors as champions and/or high finishers in recognized national, regional, state, and local tournaments, and exhibitions.

ore than 100 years of exciting quality handball, both 1-Wall and 4-Wall, have been played in New York State. With that in mind, in 2013, a group of USHA members, each nationally renowned and respected by the handball community at large, each of whom developed his handball skills in New York, formed a committee in order to create a virtual site to accomplish the following objectives:

To acknowledge those individuals who supported and gave their time and energy in the development and management of the tournaments and exhibitions held. To recognize those individuals who gave their financial support out of their love of the game. To recognize the tournaments themselves, and the sites where these great events were held, and where fans could enjoy the top competitors of our sport.

To be inducted into the NY State Handball Hall of Fame as a hall of fame player, a candidate must meet criteria developed by the committee, including championships and high finishes in recognized national or local tournaments/ exhibitions, impact on the game (e.g., establishment of a record), years of competition, management of events, coaching of youth, and a host of other intangible contributions to our game.
