A stone’s throw away is the magnificent West Beach, perfect for sunbathing or for a refreshing swim. Catering options for guests range from a shop where the necessities for one’s stay may be purchased, a Sandwich and Salad ordering service available throughout the day, possibilities for in-villa dining featuring local flavours and a restaurant which is open for evening meals. Safeguarding the island’s natural heritage is a priority for the owners, who have been working hard to ensure this since opening to guests nearly 50 years ago. Formerly a coconut plantation, the proprietors turned Bird Island into the first eco-lodge in the Seychelles and is to this day the only private island of its kind. With an awareness of man’s impact on the environment, the family-run establishment has been determinedly educating its visitors on its philosophy through its green practices; from the solar heated water, to its fresh locally sourced creole dishes.

The northerly location of Bird Island also makes it an ideal ‘port of call’ for many passing birds, a sunny spot away from the winter weather of their homes, much like the human visitors. This allows Bird Island to become a sort of ‘summer home’ for a variety of interesting birds for a period of the year.
