Just some of the bands appearing are, Skinny Girl Diet, ESKA, Clean Cut Kid, Rag’n’Bone Man, Jambinai, Tiny Ruins, Formation and Stormzy. Also appearing is noughties smooth crooner Craig David with his new DJ project TS5. Influenced by his Miami penthouse sessions, (which I have enviably watched on You Tube and look like a lot of fun!). He promises to bring a mix of old school anthems, garage and glossy vocals. Visitors to Arundel Castle’s gardens in West Sussex are in for a treat this year with a brand new thatched roundhouse, the return of the much-loved Annual Tulip Festival and new varieties of flowers to enjoy. The Castle and gardens will reopen to visitors on Friday 25 March 2016 with 30,000 bright daffodils and 50,000 Snake’s Head Fritillaries on show. Five different varieties of daffodils are expected to be in bloom including the traditional trumpetshaped ‘Dutch Master’, the pendulous ‘W.P. Milner’ and unusual ‘White Narcissus’. The daffodils will give way to a record breaking number of tulips this spring, with 32,000 of the colourful flowers on show. Visitors wanting to relax under shelter in the gardens will be able to do so for the first time this year in a thatched roundhouse made from local Norfolk Estate wood. Head Gardener Martin Duncan explains: “The garden team has worked tirelessly all winter to prepare the gardens, planting over 70,000 bulbs in total. We’ve been eagerly watching the roundhouse go up over the last few weeks and we’re so excited to see the first visitors sitting inside, admiring the fruits of our labour.” Day tickets are priced from £9, or a Grounds and Gardens Season Ticket is available at £30 allowing for unlimited access throughout the year. MUSIC, DANCE, THEATRE Established in 1967, Brighton Festival has become one of the city’s most enduring symbols of inventiveness and celebration over the past half century. This year the 50th year of annual multi-arts festival will be guest directed by experimental artist and musician Laurie Anderson. Taking place on the 7th-29th May, the theme this year is ‘home and place’, which seems perfectly fitting as Brighton Festival 2016 will celebrate its relationship with the unique, energetic and creativeness of its city, its artists, its characters, its sense of place and spirit whilst also considering universal issues and ideas around home, our communities and places of safety. Laurie Anderson says: “I’m so happy to be serving as Guest Director of Brighton Festival in its historic 50th year. I’ve been part of the Festival several times and it is so big and sprawling and exciting and there’s so many different things going on - it really has a kind of celebratory, crazy, art party feel to it. And I love the theme of home and place. It is especially relevant with so many people in the world on the move now looking, like all of us, for a place we can belong. Maybe because I’m a working musician and often on the road, the idea of home is pretty appealing to me. It’s also a
great idea for a festival - trying to find out who and where you are. See you there!” Spanning music, theatre, dance, visual art, film, literature and debate, the festival will feature work from some of the most innovative national and international artists. It includes 54 commissions, cocommissions, exclusives and premieres such as two exclusive performances from ‘folktronica’ pioneer Beth Orton, choreographer and dancer Akram Khan’s new full-length production Until The Lions; and the world premiere of a global collaborative work by Turner Prizewinning British artist Gillian Wearing. EVEN MAW
Born in Brighton & Hove, Funk The Family is a one-day festival with an emphasis on high quality music and exceptional family entertainment. They pride ourselves on creating a beautiful vibe in the heart of our city. On the 28th May Hove Park will be adorned with a spectacular outdoor music stage, the Cirque Du Funk family big top, the infamous Club Tropicana DJ tent, a plethora of activities for kids of all ages, delicious food, a fully licensed bar and much more.
The pop-up restaurant MAW has been big news for over a year now, (we wrote about in our May 2015 issue). It made a name for itself just by word of mouth and brought all of Brighton’s movers and shakers to their yard…. or venues! Very exciting then that in April a more permanent MAW will be popping up for a couple of months in Brighton Square. The interesting and varied tasting menu, realised by chef Mark Wadsworth, will change weekly and the restaurant will be open Wednesday - Saturday evenings. Look forward to home baked bread, taste explosive savouries and for those with a sugary tooth the fantastic sweet box served at the end of each meal.

The pair seem to have hit it off, with Dotty helping Maxwell to acclimatise to his new home and even showing him the best feeding spots in the million litre Ocean Display. The aquarium is hopeful that the budding love story between its two zebra sharks will soon lead to the pitter patter of tiny fins. Displays Curator Carey Duckhouse explains: “Dotty has recently begun producing eggs, which is a sure sign that she has reached sexual maturity. If our sharks mate successfully Dotty could produce dozens of fertile eggs - it’s feasible she could produce as many as 100!” Here’s hoping Maxwell and Dotty’s relationship will continue to blossom!
I’m really excited that Wild Life Festival will be returning to our southern shores this year at Brighton City Airport on the 11th-12th June. Be warned tickets will sell out fast as last year, their first, (2015) was such a hit…I mean really good fun was had by everyone!

I bought myself a VIP ticket last year as all the other tickets sold out and it was all rather impressive. I wouldn’t hesitate to do it all again and this time it’s planned to be even better! Once again, the festival is under the tutelage of top-tier acts and curators, Disclosure and Rudimental and it promises to be a great weekend, with acts like James Bay, De La Soul, Bastille, Busta Rhymes, Ice Cube, Annie Mac and our very own hero Carl Cox, (ok, maybe that’s just my feelings but ohhhh…gotta love his tunes!) ART ATTACK
PUNCHY PAINT WORK
Cass Art, is the UK’s leading independent art supplies retailer and has now opened it’s doors in Brighton. The difference that Cass Art aim for, is their belief that art and creativity is for all and hopes to engage artists and novices alike and inspirie everyone to make and do art. With 10 shops throughout the UK their mission, “Lets Fill this Town with Artists” seems to be going full steam ahead.
Hove based artist Lez Ingham has travelled extensively. Born in Africa, and growing up in Los Angeles, California, she was fascinated by American movies, advertising, television and pop music. Elvis was the first pop star that grabbed her attention, especially in the films Jailhouse Rock and King Creole. After coming to London and studying Graphic Design, Lez moved to Cape Town where she worked as a documentary film director.
All their staff are artists themselves so that they are able to offer expert advice on any creative project. Whether it’s an artistic bit of homework or a professional technique, they’re happy to give guidance and welcome any questions that come their way.
Since 2003 all these experiences plus her love of music influenced her style of Pop Art painting. Using a mixed media and collage her pictures of iconic music legends are bright , bold and most definitely something I would love to my art collection at home.
They are committed to bringing the world’s best art materials at the guaranteed lowest prices, with a price promise to match. Finally, Cass Art has two programmes that make art even more affordable for those who sustain art as a force in society: art students and artist educators. Cass Art supports students with the Cobalt Blue card and artist educators with the Viridian card, offering them exclusive discounts, inspiration and events. All other customers over 18 years’ old are eligible for a Cass Art Rewards card – that gives customers a £10 Reward for every £100 they spend at Cass Art, as well as exclusive offers and events. Their belief is that everyone can join in with art-marking, no matter their age or ability. Cass Art’s support extends beyond the materials in their shops with How To blogs and videos on their website and newsletter. Come on East Sussex….Lets get creative! www.cassart.co.uk
DOWN ON THE BEACH …AND IN YOUR SUPERMARKET Unsuspecting Brightoners were recently met by 14 yellow and white cow sculptures, Adding a splash of colour to an otherwise grey day. Passers by were treated to breakfast with Arla BOB (Best of Both) milk. The new yellow-topped skimmed milk has the taste of of semi-skimmed milk but the benefits of skimmed. The simple but brilliant process behind Arla BOB is that it takes some of the naturally occurring protein in milk and carefully adds more of it back into skimmed milk to deliver a taste and texture that is as good as semi-skimmed and fat-free. Free of artificial ingredients and additives, it’s this extra protein that makes BOB taste as good as semi-skimmed milk. Expect to see the campaign ‘Paint the Town Yellow’ from bus stops to shopping aisles. Available in Tesco, Ocado, Asda and Nisa.

Alex Proud Alex Proud is the man and mastermind behind a hugely successful business empire running bars, clubs, restaurants and photography galleries. Alongside this, he also appears on Channel 4 ‘Four Rooms’, and writes a regular column for the Telegraph. With little time spare in his busy schedule, Alex takes time out to talk to Absolute Magazine about his career and to share some exclusive news for our readers.
Where did your passion for dealing art begin? It all happened by chance really. There was a woman I was trying to hire as an assistant who told me her boyfriend (who happened to be Dennis Morris) had hundreds of unseen negatives he had taken of the Sex Pistols from their heyday. I did the show and 5000 people came to see it. Things just snowballed from there. I realised that no one else was really covering rock and roll photography. There was a gap and we managed to fill it. Right place, right time I guess. Young people don’t buy conventional art on a large scale - it’s too expensive. Photography is simply more accessible. The gallery is too. Most galleries make people feel uncomfortable, but we make them feel relaxed and offer contemporary subjects that they can relate to. What inspired you to become a bar/ restaurant owner? Music and art (specifically photography and rock ‘n’ roll) have always been intertwined. I think that they not only influence one another but help to push the boundaries of both disciplines. Branching out into the bar and restaurant trade was a logical next step. Creating a one stop destination for the entire evening, for food, music and dancing, rather than a pit-stop for a pint or a wander round gawking at pictures. Music is at the heart of our history and Proud has organically
24
grown from galleries to live music venues and crosses over on so many levels. To be able to combine this with a high quality restaurant dining experience is something that very few places do, but one that makes perfect sense as a one stop destination for all your needs. What was your vision behind Proud Cabaret, Brighton? My vision behind Proud Cabaret, Brighton was for it to be a glamourous, retro supper club offering the best entertainment around. With cabaret, burlesque and a variety of performances before, during and after dinner, I wanted Proud Cabaret, Brighton to host a memorable and unique experience like no other. Are there any upcoming events or projects you can exclusively tell Absolute Magazine? We are about to launch a brand new venue in Haggerston: Proud East. It has everything you could possibly want under one roof, including a café, restaurant, bar, gallery and even an outdoor cinema, all overlooking Regents Canal. Proud Camden will also be launching the newest incarnation of its terrace bar – Proud Wonderland, which is a re-imagined slice of the franchise with the added bonus of other-worldly décor, eccentric bar tenders, and a special Queen of Hearts Throne Room.

Do you have any plans on opening another venue within Brighton & Hove? There’s something very exciting in the works at the moment. It’s going to be our most grand venue yet, unlike anything we’ve ever done before. Watch this space... I am aware you are from Brighton. What makes Brighton so special in your opinion? Yes, I was brought up opposite the Evening Argus building and my father owned a stamp shop in the lanes, so I have big pride in the fact I was a local boy. Brighton is a very diverse and bonkers city. It is full of culture with plenty of things to see and do including a lot of street performers and gigs. Please name one of your favourite artists or photographers? I’ve been lucky enough to work with so many incredible artists and photographers for my galleries that it’s impossible to pick a favourite. I enjoy all good photography. I am particularly excited to be working with Terry O’Neill on an exhibition of his early photographs of the Rolling Stones from 1963-1965, which will be launching at Proud Chelsea on April 7th. Name one of your favourite clothing shops in Brighton? Snoopers Paradise! Not just beautiful clothing but plenty of antiques like an Aladdin’s cave of wonders
There’s something very exciting in the works at the moment. It’s going to be our most grand venue yet, unlike anything we’ve ever done before. Which is your favourite social media site? (Instagram/Twitter/Facebook) I’m a bit of a social media addict – I love it! I find Twitter to be the most effective social media platform as it’s the most easily read and shared, making it a very effective marketing tool because of it’s incredible accessibility. People are more likely to read a sentence under 140 characters than a long and rambling post – it gets the message across faster and more effectively. You currently appear on Channel 4 ‘Four Rooms’. What has been one of your highlights to date from the TV show? I recently bought an incredible one-of-akind piece by the urban artist Pure Evil, whose work I have admired for years. It’s one of his famous ‘Nightmare’ works rendered in stained glass, and is currently on display at Proud Chelsea, where I hope to show more of his work. Last year I also came across the original works of horrorfilm illustrator Graham Humphreys, with whom I collaborated on a limited edition collectors book celebrating his artwork.

Martin Webb Martin Webb, former presenter of Channel 4’s
‘Risking It All’ and businessman has achieved so much
in his career and is determined to achieve a lot more.
H
e originally Co-founded the C-Side Leisure group with, the MP for Brighton, Kemptown, whose portfolio grew to include many successful pubs, clubs and restaurants in and around Brighton, Sussex. Webb owned the UK’s first pub to give its entire profit to local charities in which he passionately supports and continues to do so. With little time spare in Webb’s busy schedule, he manages to takes time out to talk myself about his career and to disclose some exclusive news to Absolute Magazine on his upcoming projects. Where and how did you gain the knowledge to open you first bar? My first bar was the Helsinki (which is now the Seven Stars in Ship Street) back in 1990. Before that I’d being DJing and putting nights on around town. I’d just finished a business degree at Brighton University, so I suppose it was a great chance to put the theory into practice and, as it turned out, make a mess of it. What was your vision behind opening your chain of pubs and restaurants? When Simon Kirby (now our MP in Kemptown) and I started C-Side back in 1994 we wanted to run bars and clubs that were the sort of places we and our mates wanted to hang out in – funky, nicely designed places where you could stay up late and have fun. Now I’m a bit older and have kids, it’s the same theory except I now spend most of my time in family friendly places with good food. Whatever I’ve done, it’s always been about doing it as well as possible.
26
What was the best advice you have been given when starting your business? Someone once said to me “He who sweeps up, cleans up” and that has always been a great piece of advice. I’ve taken it to mean that you should always get stuck in with the non-glamorous side of business, like sweeping up. That way you stay grounded, save money and it sets a great example to the people who work for you. Can you list all your pubs and restaurants? When I was CEO of C-Side we had the Zap Club, the Funky Buddha Lounge, the Beach Club, Fortune or War, Gemini, Greens, the Polar Bar and about 20 other sites across Brighton and Hove. My businesses now include the Stoneham, Connaught and Dyke Pubs with more to come hopefully. What do you have in the pipeline, which you can exclusively disclose with Absolute Magazine? I’m currently working on an exciting new project with a talented guy called Simon Watts who is the leading ENT Consultant at the Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton. We’re developing a medically proven set of funky ear defenders for use at festivals and gigs. It’s early days, but with his medical expertise and a great design, we think this product will be huge. What advice would you give to someone who wants to run a successful bar/restaurant?
ABSOLUTE
Be prepared to work until you drop and remember it’s all about the customer experience. If you don’t make sure people have a great time, they won’t come back. Also, don’t confuse taking money with making money. The costs of running a restaurant are huge, so do your sums accurately. Are there any plans for you to be presenting again on TV? I presented two series of Channel 4’s Risking It All a few years ago, so I’m always up for any TV opportunities that come my way. It was great fun and a real eye-opener to try out something I’d never done before. Without embarrassing you, you recently made a BIG donation to a charity who I support 100% (off the fence). What makes this charity special to you? I’ve worked with Off The Fence for over 20 years and they are a charity that literally stops homeless people dying on the streets of Brighton. Our city is a place of extremes with great wealth alongside really noticeable deprivation and I think that OFT makes a real impact. They are lead by their amazing CEO Paul Young who has dedicated his life to helping people who are down on their luck. I’m amazed he’s not been knighted (or been made a saint) as yet – he certainly deserves more recognition and support than he gets. Mathew Parr TWITTER @mparr3101 INSTAGRAM @mparr3101

Dpm Absolute Talks to the DPM team on their 10 years at the top of the cities hottest nights....
b
T
his is such a broad subject, which could be analysed over pages and pages of text. Brighton has always been a very multifaceted town with so many musical cultures all thriving in the city. 10 years ago we had a massive breakthrough in the UK right after the 2003 licensing act. This changed the shape of the whole dance industry as we finally had the ability for the first time in the UK to stay in clubs and drink until very late . That also brought the inception and birth of DPM. This started with our first legal after party in a club called the Funky Buddha lounge every Saturday night from 3am. DPM was always about quality underground music and at the time we were big on electro house and techno. These were sounds that had never before reached the Brighton shores and it hit the town like a typhoon of beats and melodies that just took to people like nothing I have ever witnessed before or since. We educated people into this new type of music where every other party at the time was predominantly funky house and trance. In fact this is the reason DPM started in the first place. I could not go to a single venue in my own town where I could have a good time and enjoy the music on any given night, so along side my then business partner and long time
30
This year DPM has focused on bringing a nice mix of global artists who are very established as well as the up and comers who I feel will be huge in the next 10 years just like we did at the start. friend Russ Yallop we decided that it was time to do something about it. DPM Summer Sounds started as a small gathering of like minded friends and DJs in a pub called The Setting Sun in the aim to bring the Al fresco outdoor Ibiza experience to the Brighton clubbing scene. We just hired a huge Sound system and decided to put on this party for laughs never thinking that it was going to be a defining moment on what was to follow. As you can imagine, this event became the talk of the town, and within a short space of time the small pub lacked the capacity to cope with the demand of people wanting to attend. So, for a while, we moved it around from venue to venue. However, this presented other difficulties, as the noise levels of our parties are pretty high and there were limited venues in town with an outdoor area that could

host this type of event - until we found our ideal new home in the marina at the Karma Bar. DPM was always ahead of the game musically booking people like Locodice and Claude Von Stroke, Oliver Hunteman, Thomas Shumacher, Justin Martin and many many more back in 2007 in the vision that these guys are going to be huge in the future…And look I remember back then loving clubbing and Ibiza and meeting the older clubbers among us always saying “It’s not what it used to be” its like that cliché that keeps coming round in circles. Most punters will have a 10 year lifespan in club land before they “grow up” and this is precisely what happens. It just becomes the time for the new blood to have their moment its not so much that its changed as much as it has changed for them. Its human nature you will bore and tire of something soon enough once you have done it over and over. The reason why DPM has lasted through the ages is that its always moved ahead with the times and as always been the next step right from the start. At the moment we are spoiled as there is so much happening around us and people have that unity and love over music regardless of genre. The day party
phenomenon has evolved so much and this can be seen by the sheer amount of festivals that exist nowadays. I guess this has dented the clubs quite a bit over the summer months as most people will save to go to the festivals nowadays rather than go clubbing in their own city. But the recipe for DPM has and will always define clubbing in the South coast. As the event became bigger we just moved it to bigger venues and kept the formula exactly the same: FREE ENTRY for a party that starts in the day time with an out door area so people can enjoy a dance in the sun shine. This will be our 4th year at Shooshh which is Brighton seafront’s biggest venue and our current home. The event starts at 5pm on the beach terrace with a range of global and local talent playing outside on the beach moving things into the main room and Igloo as the day progresses. As the venues got bigger so did the artists that we bring to the table. Recent acts we have had at our events include Matthias Tanzmann, Guti, Hot Since 82, MK, Richie Ahmed Waff, Thomas Gandey, and for this years opening we welcome one of Frances biggest exports in the underground scene, part of the Apollonia outfit, and label and DC10 resident for many years now - DYED SOUNDOROM. This year DPM has focused on bringing a nice mix of global artists who are very established as well as the up and comers who I feel will be huge in the next 10 years just like we did at the start. I have placed a lot of focus on our local guys as well who are really passionate about what they do, and can bring in the new wave of sounds that keeps DPM on the constant edge. It is definitely worth having a peak in if you are going to be in the area Upcoming DPM dates March 27th, May 1st, May 29th, August 28th. Photography courtesy of Sarah Louise Bardsley 11eleven media

What is next for BGP?
I’m working hard on my blog and redesigning it. I’m hoping to write a book in the near future, as that’s always been my biggest dream and ambition.
BRIGHTON Girl PROBLEMS Blogger ‘BGP’ has reached 65,000 followers on social network sites. Her blogs include beauty, fashion, love, sex and relationship advice. Regularly uploading new blogs and replying to questions from her followers she has gained a great following, in which is still increasing. To present, she has kept anonymous to who she is. We don’t know her name and what she looks like. Although this is a mystery, I am privileged to interview the woman behind BGP exclusively for Absolute Magazine.
Brighton Girl Problems is a character I created after being out and about in Brighton and taking inspiration from different women and girls I saw and knew, and also a few bits of myself!
Not in the slightest - I barely expected 10 followers, let alone the 65,000 I currently have. It’s crazy and also extremely flattering to think that amount of people care enough to follow you and read what you have to say.
What was your vision behind creating BGP?
Why do you think it is important to blog about general problems girls face?
Explain what Brighton girl problems is?
I never really had a vision to begin with, I just created a funny Twitter page and tweeted jokey, tongue in cheek things that suddenly became really popular. I then started my blog to have a platform to write more than 140 characters. However over the past year, when things suddenly took off for my blog, I began to have much more of a vision as the blog slowly became my career. Did you expect the amount of followers you have gained since your first blog?
I think it’s important when you have a large following, to be a voice for people. Yes, I love to write about makeup and skincare, but I also think it’s important I tackle issues such as body image and mental health. I have struggled with my mental health for quite a while, and felt very much alone and like no one in the world knew what I was going through. I want the women who follow me, and the small amount of men who do, to realise they’re not alone in any of the struggles they are going through, and that its just a bad day and not a bad life.
Is there a reason to why ‘Brighton girl Problems’ has stayed anonymous? Will we ever see the face to the blogger? (By the way I love mystery about this.)
I started the Twitter account as an anonymous account simply because I was tweeting jokey things that I thought people would appreciate more as an anonymous character. I never predicted the snowballing events that would happen from it, with me launching a career from my blog and building up the following I currently have. The anonymity has stuck purely because that’s what it originally was. I will be going public, maybe this year, because I really do want to be able to do certain things that you’re limited to when you’re anonymous! Do you think there should be a male version of your blog?
I think that if someone wants to launch a Brighton Boy Problems, they’re more than welcome to, but my blog really is open to anyone. Maybe the men who follow me won’t be really excited to hear about the latest trends or newest eyeshadow palette, or maybe they will, but my blog covers a range of topics that also affect men, like mental health, which I hope also helps them! Is there any exclusive news you can tell Absolute Magazine about any upcoming projects?
I’m planning to hopefully visit New York soon to create a blog series whilst I’m out there, and get a brand new blog design and start working on my book! www.brightongirlproblems.co.uk www.twitter.com/BtonGirlProbs Mathew Parr www.twitter.com/mparr3101 www.instagram.com/mparr3101

W
ithin a short time period Beyond Foundation has built a huge portfolio with clients ranging from Vogue to London fashion week. With little time to spare due to their chaotic schedule, owner Angelique and team agree to have a chat with me at The Lanes Hotel, Brighton, about their services, makeup tips and tricks and an offer exclusively for Absolute magazine readers. Talk to me about your experience before you created Beyond Foundation?
Angelique - Prior to setting up Beyond Foundation with Justyna’s help, I used to work in the City of London- Yes, a serious job in derivatives...yawn! This changed when I had my three kids; the stress and time commitment required for that position was not practical so with much consideration, I decided to retrain and to pursue my passion for makeup by setting up Beyond foundation with help of girls I met on the course.
All of the make up artists are very good friends of mine we each bring something creatively different to the table. This is what makes our team so special. What was your vision behind creating Beyond Foundation?
42
Angelique - We all completed the same
makeup artistry course with Rebecca Gonzalez at City college and built a strong friendship during this and afterwards. The passion we all have for makeup, just made sense for us to work together.
and I have to say it doesn’t feel like work at all. It’s a fab creative day out! Who is in your team at Beyond Foundation, and what do they specialise in?
Originally starting the company was hard, which included offering our services voluntarily to get noticed whilst building our portfolio, together we laughed our way through it. Our vision for Beyond Foundation is to make make-up artists more readily available to everyone, not just photographers and the fashion industry. We love the creativity of people on our workshops, helping and educating them on how to use their own make up to enhance not to mask.
Angelique - I run the day to day looking after all our clients and making sure everyone is professional and happy. I love a creative, editorial eye using lots of colours although my passion is theatrical and special FX.
Can you name a few brands/clients you work with?
Katie is our lady of the night, a dab hand at an evening look, from simple smokey eye to a dazzling sparkly red carpet look.
Justyna - We have worked for Brighton
fringe festival held in May, Brighton & London fashion week, Next hot model, Go experience, Rolls Royce, Tesco, Moet Hennessy, Hair shows for Wella and Headmasters and Gresham Blake. The list of our clients are on our website http://www.beyondfoundation.co.uk Sara - Angelique and I have just finished
the cover shoot for this Absolute Magazine issue, we’ve been working with the same team for quite some time now and have produced some amazing work with them
ABSOLUTE
Justyna is our contouring queen and loves a coloured precision lip. Sara is our bridal specialist from the Boho bride to a very traditional look. She loves that perfect fresh skin look.
Our other girls and boys are all beyond amazing too. Are there any upcoming projects/ events you can exclusively tell Absolute Magazine? Angelique - I can’t put a name to it yet, but we are working with an amazing lady in regards to an app. We are doing a lot of work with her and no doubt you will hear about this soon. We will make sure that Absolute magazine is the first to know.
Our vision for Beyond Foundation is to make make-up artists more readily available to everyone, not just photographers and the fashion industry.
We also will be flying to Dubai in the near future for a royal wedding. This certainly will be glamorous event and I think we are off to the Seychelles with Absolute In the Autumn. What Makeup brands do you recommend? Katie - As makeup artists we use a range of makeup brands. There is no particular brand that works for every skin type. The key to being a good makeup artist is continuously gaining knowledge and experimenting with different products.
We use a variety of makeup brands, which include Laura Mercier, MAC, Urban Decay, Illiamasque, Benefit and more. Do you have any upcoming offers this spring? Angelique - We are offering all Absolute readers 10% off any makeup consultation or workshop. Please use code ABSOLUTE10.

of California tan tanning products, which are available for both men and woman, all products work on a 3-step system. Step 1 produce – scientifically formulated to produce melanin in the skin resulting in a rich golden brown base. Products include Luminous, Biofusion, Tekton, StatusTan Step 2 Oxygenate- Step 2 products offer your skin combination of two technologies which promote oxygen intake while oxidizing the melanin you have built to optimize a darker colour result. Products include Complexion, Cypher, Kardashain. Step 3 Extend- Specifically formulated to extend the life of your tan with specifically formulated hydrating ingredients. Products include Expose and Aloe vera. Is there any new Tanning Shop’s opening?
We have just opened a new store in Maidstone and we will have one opening in Crawley very soon. There is a lot of controversy with the usage of sunbeds. What advice would
you give to your customers and anyone interested in using sunbeds?
All living organisms require UV light and a responsible approach to tanning is proven to have a multitude of health benefits, not least the production and metabolism of Vitamin D. The Tanning Shop is absolutely dedicated to the promotion of responsible tanning practices and this includes but is not limited to; a biometric account access system, a registration process designed to identify skin type based on the Fitzpatrick scale, fully trained staff, innovative equipment and an established policy of customer care. We would recommend to anybody undertaking an indoor tanning programme to attend a reputable salon, ensure skin is fully moisturised outside of your sessions, use a UV specific lotion during your sessions and follow a structured tanning plan that ensures that session length and frequency is appropriate for your skin type

The Cappuccino Kid
Q. What’s the ethos of AONO & CO Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned (AONO) was founded in 2011 by Paul Hewitt a Barber from Brighton with deep roots in the barbering and tattooing community. AONO & CO has just opened its doors on London Road and is a unique and immersive environment inspired by tattoo art and what can only be described as ‘barber lifestyle’. Q. The Coffee quality is smooth and delicious, what kind of beans blend are you using? Tell us a bit about the coffee
We call on the expertise of our friends at the local coffee roaster Small batch. As well as providing top training and advice to all of our team, they ensure our house blend is always full of flavour using the freshest beans and ingredients.

The unique flour pot sourdough combined with our tasty and unusual fillings and sandwich combinations (such as peanut butter and cheddar) is what we feel will set us apart from the rest and enable us to achieve this.
Q. Is it important that your baristas keep the same level of consistency when making Latte art?
Training, Practice, Time and the right machine are the vital ingredients when attempting to make great coffee look beautiful as well as taste it... and it’s something we feel passionate about. Q. You have a mouthwatering selection of cakes and savories on offer, where do these come from? Which are the key favourites on offer?

Q. Your interior is beautiful and minimal, where did these ideas come from? The AONO & Co interior was developed and designed in house by two of our company directors, Oli & Anna. Together they project managed the build from conception to completion incorporating the strongest and most relevant elements from the existing stand out AONO brand. The hand crafted concrete counter and the white beveled tiles against the Georgian wire glass seemed the perfect compliment to the black and white branded assets. We wanted to create a sense of space, while creating unique areas for our customers to explore, kick back and relax. Downstairs where we have our private grooming studio for Paul, creator and founder of AONO and our tattoo studio, was more of a challenge and we achieved what we were looking for by creating studio spaces separated by crittall style glass and mirror.
Q. How long has AONO & Co been on the street and have the glut of other coffee shops affected you much?
We have only recently opened our doors but we are certain that this truly unique concept and experience will set us apart from what is of course a busy market. We have one of the worlds top barbers cutting hair and in the same space baristas serving top coffee, the best toastie in town, clothing and accessories from our fashion brand AONO...and you can get a tattoo from one of the most sought after artists around. We are proud to be one of the first new independent operators who focus fully on quality and service above anything else, there is no better ethos than that surely.
Q. Future plans? any expansion on the horizon? As much as we are putting everything into making sure our flagship shop on London Rd works right now we are a forward thinking team and will always look to explore new opportunities. Watch this space...

Oh La La The Creperie serves the best of crepes in a contemporary setting, just a stones throw from the sea.
T
he only crepes I have ever tried are those similar to the creations I dish up myself on pancake day…slightly soggy sweet dishes with lemon and honey, or if I am really pushing the boat out, with banana and Nutella! I have had very similar on the street side in various countries and had come to the conclusion that they are nothing special and not for me.
I am now, however, converted! The Creperie, just off Brighton seafront offers so much more than I could have had imagined. The venue is playful and welcoming on even the rainiest of days, which it was. We started with a hot chocolate which was rich and sweet, covered in copious amounts of squirty cream and marshmallows and this warmed us up immediately. There are thirteen types of savoury crepes on the menu, (all gluten free), with something to suit meat eaters, veggies and those that like fish in the form of a smoked salmon ‘New York Deli’ crepe. We ordered three types of savoury crepes, and I was more than pleasantly surprised. ‘The Italian’ filled with mozzarella, fresh spinach and sunblush tomatoes, ‘The Fajita’ and ‘The French Blue’ filled with Roquefort cheese and other delicious bits. There was no scrimping on the fillings and orders can be made directly from the menu, or you are welcome to choose your own fillings and create the crepe of your choice. The savoury crepes are made from buckwheat, a little olive oil and salt and they arrive crisp and crunchy (no soggy bits at all), large and really tasty! One of my lunch guests was an amazing chef, so when he praises food, it is praise indeed. He had nothing but good things to say about his Fajita crepe.
If you can manage a sweet crepe or waffle afterwards, then hats off to you! The choice is mouthwatering from ‘The Traditional’ with the simpleness of sugar and honey to the totally decadent ‘Black Forest’ (cherries, dark or milk chocolate and whipped cream). Matched with a small batch coffee….this is pretty much heaven on a plate…a very sweet plate.
One of my lunch guests was an amazing chef, so when he praises food, it is praise indeed. He had nothing but good things to say about his Fajita crepe. This place is great for kids, offering kids meal deals and a ‘Kids Make Your Own Party’ deal. It’s not bad for the adults either as you can get a glass of wine or beer here too and there are free refills for cold drinks or tea on a blustery day. The downstairs, which seats 36 people, can be hired for movie or karaoke nights and the menu also offers eat in or takeaway, so they pretty much have everything covered. They are open for lunch seven days a week (from 12pm), breakfast on a Saturday and Sunday (from 10am) and until 10pm for dinner on a Friday and Saturday.

Proud In Brighton’s Bohemian quarter stands one of my favourite landmarks. Once a mausoleum it is now the home to the cities very own Proud Cabaret. This building is steeped in history and the perfect setting for an extravagant array of burlesque, cabaret, jazz and intimate dining.
T
his time of year I can often be found hibernating in order to avoid the grey, wet evenings. However when the opportunity arose to put on my glad rags I immediately felt a sense of excitement. I have always been fascinated with the roaring twenties era of prohibition, drinking, smoking and dancing all night in secret locations. The good old days my grandfather would say and the perfect opportunity to have an impromptu date night with my husband George. Proud Cabaret’s efficiency and ease of booking was a breath of fresh air. We were emailed and asked to select our three course meal and also reminded that the evening commences at 7:00pm sharp. Our booking was for a slightly quieter Thursday. George and I promptly arrived, ready to be seduced by the sultry world of burlesque.....Well I was, but my husband having never experienced burlesque was a little less gung-ho. He was nonetheless intrigued and thrilled with the idea of the VIP package. Three course meal, desert, cheese platter an extensive array of cocktails and a signed programme in case he felt the need to divert his attention away from the stage.
My husband and I enjoy socialising and have always considered a ‘Big’ night out to be London, yet from the moment we walked through the door and were seated at our romantic booth we felt a sense of satisfaction as this had more of a city vibe than we have been used to in Brighton. It makes a huge difference having a dedicated table host and we received a very warm welcome from Catherine. Immediately we noted Catherine’s passion for her role at Proud and knowledge of not only the three Cabaret venues under the Proud Umbrella but also the art galleries, the food, cocktails and the performers. As the evening started to unfold we were introduced to the two mixologists Ben and Ryan. Cocktails were popularised in the 1920’s in order to mask the taste of the homemade liquor, so it was fitting that we try some of the best cocktails on offer in order to set the scene for our evening of decadence and glamour. I had a ‘Lynchburg lemonade’ it was possibly the best cocktail I have tasted in ages with the strapping kick of Tennessey Whiskey,
The high ceilings, romantic booths and abundance of art deco pictures on the wall really enhance the feeling of stepping back in time. The entrance is humble, but this sets the scene for the splendor that lay behind the heavy velvet curtain. Low lighting and colourful whisps of vapour swirl around recreating the feeling of a jazz venue. enhancing the Brighton experience and taking it to the next level with a new cocktail menu soon to be implemented and a desire to ensure the best performers regularly frequent this venue by the sea. Every space is covered in opulent baroque decor and as the tables started to fill the buzz in the room became captivating.George and I were both surprised at the swift arrival of our first course. I had the Girolle and Mushroom Wonton Ravioli and George decided to keep things local and have the Sussex Haddock. Both dishes were beautifully presented and given the privacy of our booth we decided to share which enhanced our dining experience. At this point the combination of cocktails and romance seemingly made us both feel rather whimsical and nostalgic a perfect date night! Our main of Steamed Soy & Ginger Seabass and French Trimmed Lamb Culets were flavoursome. The menu is seasonal and as James pointed out while the entertainment is paramount the food is just as important. Standards are high and I believe he has his eye on the ball with ensuring Brighton competes with the best of London. Proud Cabaret is open Thursday through to Sunday and every night is different as the combination of performers and hosts varies on availability. Ultimately be prepared for a variety show. All tastes are catered for and whilst we didn’t experience the male acts or as Proud say, ‘boyesque’ performers, we had the perfect mix of rich and colourful, slightly risqué performances with swing sensation tunes belted out inbetween acts. As the lights dimmed a spotlight shone on our flamboyant and hugely talented host Paul Roberts we sank into our booth and
prepared for the show ahead. The acts varied from your usual seductive strip tease to Chi Chi Revolver a hula hooping extraordinaire. George of course said this was his favourite act, but I could see he was captivated by various performances although he did look away when the nipple tassel swinging carried on longer than expected. I was so excited when one of my favourite performers Cherry Shakewell graced the stage. This blond Brighton bombshell is a favourite and when she isn’t performing for celebrities or abroad you may be lucky enough to catch her in Proud Brighton. The elegantly choreographed routines, professional performers and attention to detail make this an easy recommendation for any form of celebration, an intimate date or even an after work retreat. The backdrop alone is worth a look and while there is the option of standing room only, I would highly recommend the full experience as this truly is a memorable and alternative night out. Our evening was perfectly executed and full of hedonistic glitz and glamour. Proud Cabaret plays host to the best of burlesque and as our night came to an end both George and I agreed we thoroughly enjoyed every second of our experience and will be booking again with the knowledge that a totally different enchanting night awaits in our very own town and also only a stroll along the beach home!! Food For Friends The thing with vegetarian food is, to make it flavoursome it needs a little more time, effort and a lot of imagination. Unfortunately these are all things, when it comes to my domesticated cooking skills, I severely lack. As a result, I wouldn’t think of going to a vegetarian restaurant that often.
W
hen I was invited to try out Food For Friends, I took my one and only vegetarian friend who I could be sure to give me an honest opinion on the food, alongside my less experienced veggie palate. Food For Friends sits in the South Lanes, right on a crossroads where Brighton life can be seen at every angle. The full glass-fronted restaurant is the perfect place for people watching. There is a large selection of dishes to choose from here with a variety of starters, main dishes, deserts, a great set lunch menu and afternoon teas. There are gluten-free and vegan options. Everything is made from scratch, even the bread. There is a fantastic selection of wines and inventive cocktails. As it was a lunch time, we chose a couple of non-alcoholic beverages, ‘Strawberry, Pear and Elderflower Refresher’ which was colourful and sweet and a ‘Lemon and Apple Zinger’ with added
66
ginger, cucumber and mint. They were incredibly refreshing and the perfect way to cleanse the palette ready for our food. So, on to the food! Wow! I chose the ‘Satay tempeh skewers’, which came with a chilli, mango, bean sprout and herb salad. I have never tried tempeh which is a softer version of tofu, but it was incredibly flavoursome. My friend tried the ‘Sweet tofu pockets’ which has a wonderful oriental taste to them, served with pak choi, pickled ginger and a hot Gochujang pepper. We were more than happy to go halves on these plates as both were equally delicious. For our main courses we dined on ‘Portobello mushrooms stuffed with feta’ served with turnip and potato dauphinoise, green beans (presented in a bundle under one of the large mushrooms), red and green pesto and creme fraiche. We also tried the ’Open ravioli’ with butternut squash,
ABSOLUTE
beetroot, walnuts, wilted spinach and a light white wine and blue cheese sauce. It was just the right strength without overpowering the flavours of the other ingredients in the dish. The dishes at Food For Friends were plates of art. The presentation was immaculate. This food almost looked too good to eat! My friend (the veggie expert) commented on how she could taste every layer of flavour in the dishes and I concurred! It was truly delicious and completely filling. If I could be served food like this every day I would give up meat!

BOHO
Gellato The most amazing Ice-cream you ever tried? Well you’ll never know until you give it a try. We did, and believe it probably is. Absolute meets Seb Cole to talk flavours.
Q. How long has Boho Gelato been established? I opened Boho Gelato in Pool Valley in June 2010, so it will be 6 years this summer. I really cant believe it has been over half a decade, I guess time flies when you are having fun! Q. The extensive freezer offers no fewer than 24 flavours on show. Tell us about these ice creams, the flavours and the quality of the final product. We have a minimum of 24 different flavours available in the shop daily and usually between 6 and 10 of these will be vegan friendly. However, on a busy summer day we can go through as many as 40 or 50 different flavours as we try not to replace flavours with the same ones when they run out. In total we have made somewhere between 450 and 500 flavours including seasonal specials and the ones that we make exclusively for restaurant customers. We try to cover the whole flavour spectrum when coming up with new flavours, so we make dessert recreations (such as carrot
70
cake or sachertorte), cocktails (mojito, bellini etc..), innovative combinations (cucumber & rose or strawberry, basil & black pepper) or revisited classics. We really can make ice cream that tastes like anything, although we do tend to steer away from chocolate bar, fizzy drink and bubblegum style flavours. Q. So what are the customers favourites? Our overall best seller (by a long way!) is the sea salt caramel and closely behind that comes the vegan peanut butter sea salt caramel. Other than those two, most of our flavours seem to sell at a pretty similar rate and we dont sell nearly as much vanilla or chocolate as you might expect! We tailor the flavours on offer to the season (or the weather), both in terms of the ingredients and the style of flavours, so on a summer scorcher you will find things to refresh such as watermelon or chilli coconut and on an autumn grey day we will make flavours like battenberg or plum crumble.

Q. You are not just a Ice Cream walkin shop, tell us something about the wholesale side of the business. When I opened Boho I had no idea that we would end up producing so much ice cream for wholesale. Over the last few years it is a part of the business that has organically grown off the back of the quality of our product, I have never been out to ‘sell’ to restaurants, all of our wholesale customers have either come to us though connections or by walking into the shop. We now supply 43 other sites and we make ice cream for some of the best food businesses in Brighton such as Pizzaface, Small Batch Coffee, La Choza, Curry Leaf Cafe, Riddle & Finns & Indian Summer. And great vegan food businesses such as Purezza, Beelzebab & V-Bites. We also work with local producers such as Ridgeview, Harveys & Blackdown Gin. Q. Brighton has become a bit of an Ice-cream hub of late, how does your product quality compare to some of the other outlets?
Our product is made using a traditional artisanal method, using locally produced milk and cream. We dont add any fats, preservatives, softeners or similar and the result is that our gelato has a very pure character and (most importantly) a low air content giving it a really smooth texture that doesnt melt away too quickly and delivers an intense flavour hit. We only use the best ingredients such as DOP Bronte Pistachios or Bourbon Vanilla and dont use flavouring syrups or powders. Say no more...
Q. Is Boho Gelato expanding? Have you got future plans to open more outlets? In the last few years public demand for gelato has increased so we opened a new shop in Weymouth last summer which has been a great success so far and we will shortly be opening our 2nd outlet in Brighton. We are all about slow steady growth though and the most important thing to me is keeping our ice cream at the top of its game, not the big bucks.

Sahara
PRETTY HOT
W
hen you arrive at the restaurant Sahara, the first thing you hear is the exotic music, the next thing is the amazing welcome from the owner and staff. I have been here a couple of times and each time the friendliness of the people here has always been a pleasant surprise. This North African / Lebanese / Arabian restaurant is full of metal Moroccan style lamps, colourful patchwork cushions and red velvet. It feels atmospheric even on one of their quieter week nights, with the scent of joss sticks and good food gently lingering in the air. The menu is extensive with over 60 dishes to choose from. I thought it wise to ask Sabri, (the owner) what he would recommend and I am glad I did as his suggestion of food was really good. We started with a Mezze for two, which is the perfect dish to share with friends. There were only two of us and it was so substantial it could easily be shared between four…. and we have bight appetites! The plate was filled with spicy lamb sausages (Meshwi Menguez), Hallomi cheese, Falafels, stuffed vine leaves (Warak inab), hot spoiled chicken wings and more! It was delicious and leaving any to make room for our next course was not an option. Way to good to leave any of this food! Next up was Tagine Lamb, an aromatic and slightly sweet dish, with plums, apricots, sliced almonds and the tenderest of lamb, served in a clay tagine. When the lid is taken off

with an impressive flourish, the delicious smelling steam hits you and the taste does not disappoint. My dining partner had the Saltan’s mixed kebabs which consisted of a skewer of Shish, Tawouk and Kofta, charcoal cooked and served on a bed of rice. The meat was delicious but what my partner pointed out was, that even the rice was fluffy and cooked to perfection. The simplest of things here taste very good indeed. The quality of the food, the portion sizes and the general feel of Sahara make this a great value restaurant without feeling cheap in the slightest. Being a BYO restaurant makes it a great and inexpensive night out. They don’t even charge a corkage fee. Downstairs is another gorgeous room that seats 60 and can be hired for parties. Having eaten here before, on a weekend night, and knowing the general busy, fun feel in the whole of the restaurant, I can imagine a private party downstairs would be fantastic. There are doors that open out on to a garden where you can smoke a fruity flavoured Shisha and recline with a mint tea. It is Authentic, friendly with fabulous food that won’t break the bank. Pretty perfect really. A Taste of Sahara 103 Western Road, Brighton, BN1 2AA Tel: 01273 911 843 Email: info@atasteofsahara.com

DESTINATION
Abu
DHABI Just over seven hours away from London Heathrow, is Abu Dhabi; the capital of the magnificent United Arab Emirates. An area mixing contemporary skyscrapers and tax-free shopping mega-centres with culture and beautiful white marble-domed mosques, Abu Dhabi is a dream destination for all.
W
ith archaeological evidence found dating back to the 3rd millennium BC, Abu Dhabi has a rich history and settlements can be traced back over 5,000 years. While today, we know the region mostly for its oil reserves, the first settlers led herding and fishing lifestyles, In 1892 Abu Dhabi became linked with Britain, through the trading of pearls – its convenient location (being able to connect with India and the East), cemented its importance. By the 1930’s, Abu Dhabi’s wealth had taken a turn for the worse, with the introduction of Japan’s pearl industry, the recession and the death of their ruler Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa. However, just nine years later Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan gave permission for the
96
Trucial Coast Development Oil Company, (renamed the Abu Dhabi Petroleum Company in 1962) to search for large oil reserves. In 1958, impressive offshore oil reserves were discovered, along with onshore reserves in 1959. From 1962, the exporting began and Abu Dhabi has been renowned for its unbelievable wealth ever since! The last 50 years have seen Abu Dhabi change and reconstruct itself into a flawless city, with an abundance of sleek skyscrapers, shopping malls, out-of-thisworld hotels and pretty gardens, yet it still holds its history close to its heart, which undoubtedly has been a prominent factory in the area’s success. With its upmarket new look and so much to see and do, it’s is no surprise that
ABSOLUTE
Abu Dhabi has become a playground for tourists wanting the Emirati experience, with a contemporary twist. But, beneath the sophisticated high-rise buildings and extensive entertainment facilities, lies its cultural heart – rich with Islamic and Arabic traditions. Amongst the tall, towering buildings, you’ll find majestic mosques to take your breath away. You’ll also see sports such as camel racing and dhow sailing and performances of Arabian poetry, dance and music. Many locals still dress traditionally – men with full length shirts and a white or red checked headscarf and women wear a long black robe and a headscarf. It’s not compulsory, but women are asked to cover their shoulders and legs, and dress conservatively, especially during the holy festival of Ramadan.
With its upmarket new look and so much to see and do, it’s is no surprise that Abu Dhabi has become a playground for tourists wanting the Emirati experience, with a contemporary twist. When to visit With almost year-round sunshine and very little rainfall, Abu Dhabi is an ideal place to visit at any time – especially during our cold, British winters. Temperatures range from 13C on a cool winter’s night to a high of 42C on a hot summer’s day. Etihad Airlines are the national airline of the United Arab Emirates and fly direct from London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi in just seven hours and fifteen minutes. The airline has won the prestigious “World’s Leading Airline” award at the World Travel Awards for five years running, and we can certainly see why. From the moment you step on-board, the Arabian-influenced hospitality is evident, combining warmth, generosity and culture. Before you know it, it’s time to land and then the Emirati adventure really begins!
When to stay Located just twenty-minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport is the Hilton Capital Grand Abu Dhabi, a spacious and super-stylish hotel in the prime location of Abu Dhabi’s new commercial district.
Conveniently located for shopping malls, restaurants, leisure attractions (including the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, Zayed Sport City and Yas Island) and everything else Abu Dhabi has to offer, you couldn’t wish for a better location. From the moment the hotel door opens, you know that you’re in for a luxurious stay. The recently opened Hilton Capital Grand Abu Dhabi not only wows from the outside (its entire glass exterior is iconic and stands out amongst the skyline – no mean feat, in Abu Dhabi, with its abundance of eyecatching buildings!) but from the inside too; with stunning suites, a gorgeous spa and inviting restaurants to choose from, all to enjoy during your time at the hotel. The rooms (choose from classic and deluxe rooms to spacious junior and presidential suites) are all finished to the highest standard, with marble bathrooms and of course, those floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out across the city. Those treating themselves to Executive Level have the exclusive use of the Executive Lounge; serving complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea, evening drinks and canapes too.
ABSOLUTE
Speaking of food, keen foodies will be in their element deciding which of the hotel’s restaurants and bars to dine in – spanning all cultures and cooked with fresh ingredients, all prepared by internationally renowned chefs. There’s the Blue Bar, the hotel’s signature bar, which boasts views across Abu Dhabi (a must-visit to sip cocktails as the sun goes down!), the hip Noche Chill-Out Lounge serving South American dishes, creative cocktails and shisha, all alfresco on the terrace, Oceana serving delicious breakfasts and international-inspired dinners, romantic Pan-Asian restaurant Rouge and the Tea Lounge; a relaxing lounge serving the best English and Arabic teas, along with sandwiches and cakes. After all that fine-eating, the TLC continues in the Hilton Capital Grand’s spa. Indulge yourself further with a treatment, in the sumptuous and relaxing surroundings, and continue your rejuvenating experience by taking time out in the sauna, whirlpool and in and outdoor pools.
97
Things to do With all that luxury and hospitality, you could be forgiven for staying in the hotel. However, Abu Dhabi has so much to see and do, that staying indoors is just not an option. Close to the Hilton Capital Grand is Ferrari World Abu Dhabi – the world’s first Ferrari themed park AND the largest indoor theme park! Whether you’re a Formula One fanatic or not, visitors of all ages can’t fail to enjoy the thrills of the park! Experience the ride of The Rosso; also known as the fastest rollercoaster in the world! Strap yourself into the F1 cockpit and find out exactly what it’s like to accelerate 240km/h in under 5 seconds! You’ll be launched 52 metres into the air before flying through chicanes and crossing through the finish line in celebratory style. With the adrenaline still pumping, it’s time to take on the Flying Aces. This record-breaking rollercoaster has the world’s tallest loop and steepest starting hill inclination. Hold onto your seat, as you speed 150km/h along an exhilarating 1.5km track, with that 170ft loop and 51 degree steep lift – guaranteed to give you the ride of your life! Feeling competitive? Pit your skills against your family, friends and fellow Park guests at the Park’s Racing Academy! Inspired by the iconic Yas Marina Circuit, the 290m long track will see you gear up, buckle up and race your go kart to the finish, to hopefully become the champion! If after your Formula One

filled day, you’d like to see where races are held, visit the Yas Marina Circuit itself, which is free to walk or cycle and is open every Sunday night. If you’re still feeling adventurous, the next attraction on your to-visit list has to be the Yas Waterworld and it’s just next door to Ferrari World! The Emiratithemed waterpark has been open for just three years and has become one of Abu Dhabi’s must-visit destinations. Spread over 15 hectares, the waterpark has 45 rides, slides and attractions – four of which are never before seen waterpark rides! Whilst it may be a new tourist destination, it ranks highly with local and international guests alike; last year winning the Traveller’s Choice Award and the Certificate of Excellence from Tripadvisor. The waterpark’s attractions follow the adventures of Dana, a young Emirati girl, looking for a legendary pearl that brought prosperity to her village, and even has a pearl diving attraction, which showcases just how important diving played in the UAE and Abu Dhabi’s history. Yas Waterworld has started to host a Ladies Night, an event not to be missed – with UV henna painting and H20 Dance Zone! Perhaps the ultimate girls’ night out?! So now you’ve experienced all the best white-knuckle rides and fun of the contemporary side of Abu Dhabi, it’s time to venture five hours outside of the centre, for something a little bit different, yet completely memorable; an

evening safari in the desert, with dinner underneath the stars! The evening exposes you to the extreme side of the capital city’s rich and beautiful culture, starting with a thrilling ride over the bumpy sand dunes, where you’ll find your camel and hop on-board to ride off into the sunset. Once the sun sets, the traditional fun continues as you visit an Arabic camp for henna painting, belly dancing and shisha (a traditional Arabic smoking pipe). There’s also delicious local sweets and coffee to sample. As the smell of the BBQ wafts, you’ll be seated underneath the stars for a mouthwatering meal you will never forget – complete with Arabian entertainment and coffee and dates, which have been served in Emirati homes, after meals, for centuries. We can vouch, that this experience gave us the true essence of Abu Dhabi, tying together its fascinating history, stunning landscape and friendly hospitality.

Where to shop Abu Dhabi is a dream destination for both shopaholics that love a bargain and those that enjoy shopping for designer wares alike. Head to small souk-like outlets to pick up traditional perfumes, spices, carpets, textiles and golds. Prices are often much lower for the last three items, especially, than at home and if you’re prepared to barter; you could just bag yourself an even bigger bargain! But, if designer and well-known brands are more your thing, Abu Dhabi’s Yas Mall is a Mecca of stores spanning fashion, footwear, home furnishings, electronics, beauty, toys and so much more! The Mall is home to 2.5million sq.ft of shops, restaurants and entertainment (including a 20 screen cinema and soonto-be-opening Snow City!), making this a fun day out for everyone – just twenty minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi. Expect to find well-known brands such as Lipsy, Love Moschino, Apple, Pandora, Jo Malone, L’Occitane, MAC, Calvin Klein and Armani Jeans (along with so many more!), all in this mammoth sized shopping centre, which surprisingly was very easy to navigate!
Looking for the home of luxurious fashion brands? You’ll find them all and more at The Galleria, on Al Maryah Island. The Galleria is a stunning, state of the art shopping centre, favoured by fashionistas – thanks to designers such as Alexander McQueen, Dior, Christian Louboutin, Dolce and Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, Prada and Ralph Lauren all having boutiques here. If you fancy having a designer splurge; this is your perfect shopping paradise. Just don’t forget your credit card! It’s worth noting that most shops in Abu Dhabi open 10am -10pm (although many mall stores stay open ‘till midnight!), but some independents do close between 1-4pm for lunch. Hours also change during Ramadan, with many shops closing for the afternoon and reopening from 7pm – 10pm (and even later!).
99
Where to eat and drink Now your itinerary is sorted, it’s time to plan where to eat and drink! And like everything else; Abu Dhabi has plenty of choice for all tastes and budgets. Hotel Aloft, located in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (just minutes from the airport), has seven trendy bars and restaurants, all providing a fashionable spot to be seen in. One of their sushi restaurants is Relax@12 where on its alfresco terrace, cocktails are sipped and the finest sushi is consumed, as the sun sets over the city. Guests then dance the night away in their cool and luxurious interior. Situated on the twelfth floor, the chic restaurant and bar is a perfect place to relax and send out the day in style. The lounge also hosts a popular Ladies Night every Tuesday and Friday, where ladies can enjoy free drinks between 10pm and 2am! Cocktail, anyone? If you fancy enjoying drinks and Asian tapas (who wouldn’t?!) overlooking Abu Dhabi – Ray’s Bar at Level 62 of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, is a must!
100
With top tunes and one of the most extensive cocktail menus we’ve ever seen, along with a truly amazing view; this bar is hard to beat. Staying on the drinks theme, Iris on Yas Island (a thirty minute drive from the UAE capital) is a fabulous bar to visit for a chilled atmosphere, ambience and beautiful setting, overlooking the water. Iris has a relaxed vibe and we can vouch; it is an easy place to enjoy a delicious drink, get lost in conversation and indulge in smooth music. But, for something a little more low key; there’s a cool pop-up style “beer garden” behind the seaside oasis of the Le Meridian on the Corniche, where a few bars and restaurants open up. With a cool, casual atmosphere and live music; this is one place to visit for a change to the swanky and sophisticated bars, mentioned above. After all of that sightseeing, cocktail supping and tapas tasting, surely, like us you want to treat yourself to a meal at an award-winning restaurant?! We can’t recommend Vasco’s at the Hilton Abu Dhabi (in the beach area of The
ABSOLUTE
Corniche), enough. The menu is inspired by intrepid explorer Vasco Da Gama’s route, recreating flavours from all over the world and diners can enjoy their meal inside or outside. We would always recommend dining outdoors, as long as the weather allows, as the deck enjoys second-to-none views of the Arabian Gulf – one of our favourite highlights of the entire trip. Vasco’s was recently awarded “Highly Recommended” in the Best International category by Time Out Abu Dhabi and with a mouthwatering, varied menu and service, we simply couldn’t fault; we can completely understand why.
Now your itinerary is sorted, it’s time to plan where to eat and drink! And like everything else; Abu Dhabi has plenty of choice for all tastes and budgets.
We recomemend Eztihad as chosen flight partner Things you should know Language - Arabic (English is widely spoken too) Currency - UAE dirham Population: 1.6 million Time zone: GMT +4 hours Visa: UK Citizens need to fill in a free-of-charge tourist visa upon arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport Law: UAE laws are different to those in the UK and it is advised that you know local laws and customs, in order to not offend, during your time in Abu Dhabi. There can be serious penalties for doing something that may not be illegal in the UK. For example; bars and restaurants may serve alcohol to those aged 18, but it is a punishable offence
to drink or be under the influence of alcohol in public. Public displays of affection are also frowned upon. Electronic cigarettes are illegal and are likely to be confiscated at the border

Brighton Racecourse Brighton racecourse has a long standing history established in 1783 by soon to be King George IV and has sat above Brighton, a part of our landscape, ever since. In 1820 Prince of Wales crowned King George IV was the last reigning monarch to visit the racecourse (until the present Queen in 1979 and 2007).
Northern racing took a majority stake in 1998 later merging with Arena Racing in 2012 to form Arena racing Company which is the largest racing company in the UK operating around 40% of all fixtures. Brighton Racecourse is now under the management of a new Executive Director, Shaun Steel, who has worked for Arena Racing Company for the past 6 years with time at Lingfield Park and Newcastle Racecourse prior to joining Brighton. “The plan for the year ahead is to return the historic site back to the heart of the community and emulate the likes of Amex Stadium and Sussex County Cricket Ground in creating a centre for corporate hospitality, family days out and above all creating a fantastic social occasion for all who visit the Racecourse, I want to ensure each person visiting the racecourse this year receives fantastic service, enjoys great food and leaves feeling that they had an amazing social experience” - Shaun Steel The 2016 season consists of 22 fixtures which begin on Tuesday 19 April and runs until the Season Finale on October 13. Hosting five wonderful feature race
days this season including Genting Casino Gentleman’s Day on Friday May 27 and the annual exciting 3 day Festival of Racing which includes John Smiths Raceday on Wednesday 3 August, Frosts Ladies Day on Thursday 4 August and Checkatrade Festival Finale on Friday 5 August. The annual Family Fun Raceday takes place on Sunday 21 August with plenty of entertainment across the racecourse for all of the family. As well as hosting fantastic competitive racing the venue also hosts a diverse range of meetings, conferences and events which include medium sized music events, team building activities and park and ride for larger events in the city with the bonus of fantastic public transport links to the heart of Brighton and free parking for all. “We want Brightonians to come and check us out and we promise they won’t be disappointed” - Shaun Steel Not only is it a great social day, with tremendous competitive racing, it has spectacular views of our wonderful city and beyond, exceptional cuisine thanks to our new in house catering team and a

Pride.
Brighton and Hove Pride is a Pride to be proud of. It is a Pride With Purpose. Alongside the smiles, sunshine and good times, Brighton Pride’s sole ethos is to raise funds and awareness.
I
n 2015 Brighton Pride broke all targets by raising £100,000 for local organisations and good causes bring the total to over £210,000 in the past three years. Through the Rainbow Fund Grant Awards, Brighton Pride supports local charities and community organisations that change the lives of those living in our city. Groups benefitting this year included Allsorts Youth Project who provide vital support for young people; MindOut who deliver pioneering work for people with mental health issues; GEMS and Older And Out both organisations who are providing essential social networking and support opportunities for older people and the LGBT Community Safety Forum who this year delivered the Accessibility Matters project making Pride more accessible and safer for disabled, blind, deaf and older people. In addition to Pride’s continued commitment to fundraising for the Rainbow Fund, 2015 saw the launch of the new Brighton Pride Social Impact Fund as Pride works with community organisations to develop projects and ideas that will be of social benefit to the wider community. Organisations receiving grants this year included the Marta Scott Dance Company
to help disadvantaged or abused women; the St James’s Street Community Action Group for security lighting to deter drug dealers; and Little Green Pig, a creative writing educational charity helping 9-11 year olds create a film on homelessness in the city. Jeremy Ogden, chairman of the St James’s Street Community Action Group, said: “The St James Street LAT is delighted to receive some funds from the Social Impact Fund which we can use toward making the area a better place for all.” Julie Watson, co-director, Little Green Pig said: “We are delighted! Thanks to the fund we’ll be able to make a film to capture the project our young writers are working on with Brighton Housing Trust for the Fringe Festival.” Brighton Pride were thrilled to receive an accolade for the Greatest Contribution to Sussex Charity By An Organisation, sponsored by The Argus, at the 2015 Sussex Business Awards at the Grand Hotel in Brighton. As well as our fundraising, Brighton Pride also has a campaigning theme of Uniting Nations which an opportunity to turn the spotlight towards our global LGBT+ neighbours. We will highlight the plight of communities living in fear of persecution,
ABSOLUTE
in fear of their lives or struggling for the freedom to live. The global Pride events where rainbow flags on the street are forbidden, marches banned, participants are bullied and harassed, and campaigners beaten and arrested. Brighton Pride is a community event committed to the belief that equality matters, and that by campaigning and fundraising together we can achieve so much. Every ticket bought, every Pride supporting party, every proud business sponsor, every fundraising event, every donation, indeed every person can make a difference. Paul Kemp, Director of Brighton Pride CIC, said: “We would like to thank everyone who attended Pride 2015 and helped us raise this record amount to benefit local LGBT and HIV organisations providing effective front line services to the LGBT communities in Brighton and Hove. Pride’s sole aim is to provide benefit to the community and all ticket revenue raised goes directly to the operational and running costs of producing the Pride Festival, Pride Community Parade, Pride Village Party and Pride’s community fundraising campaigns. We would like to thank our volunteers, Pride sponsors, local businesses and our statutory partners that help us deliver Pride each year.” 109

arying from family homes to barns, nightclubs, stables and offices, there are examples of the company’s master craftsmanship throughout the county. With an impeccable reputation, a growing team and a seemingly neverending amount of redevelopment taking place along the coast, owner Gary has found a recipe for success that has lasted the test of time. Now in higher demand than ever before, Absolute caught up with the gaffer to understand exactly how he has built his empire. How has your company grown to be where it is now? What has contributed to your success? Our success is a result of providing high standards of work at reasonable prices, customer relations are important to us. We are a family-run business and have plenty of experience in all aspects of the building industry. From refitting/refurbishing night clubs to loft conversions, extensions and full house refurbishments. We have recently built a driving range at Piltdown Golf Club, a detached house in Henfield and a block of flats in Haywards Heath. At what point did you recognise the success of your business?
You are only as good as your last job and this is why I strive to keep the standards high at all times. The team must be pretty large these days. How many people are now part of the machine? Our team has grow over the years, but we are now currently at 12 full timers and sub contractors, most of which have worked with us for a number of years and continue to do so. And where are you sourcing your materials? Is there an eco-angle? We use various builders and timber merchants and always use recycle centres to dispose of our waste. We have installed Solar panels, air source heat pumps and heat exchange units. Do you offer placements or apprenticeship programmes throughout colleges and universities? We currently have two apprentices at the moment, 1 carpenter and 1 plumber, both of whom are at college in Brighton. What projects/ventures have you got going on at present? We are just finishing 2 large house refurbishments both in Hove. The owner of 1 property was keen to restore the period features which included sash

windows, cornices, fireplaces and ceiling roses. The kitchen at the back of the property has been opened up and has a very clean and contemporary feel to it. We have worked closely with our Client to bring her vision to life and the end result is stunning. Photos will uploaded to our website soon so please keep an eye out for them. Why are you different to other businesses within your industry? What can your clients expect from you? We are a family-run business with over 25 years experience in a wide variety of building work, we are honest, hard working and reliable. How has the city of Brighton helped your business? Do you feel Brighton’s high creativity levels have contributed to your success? Brighton is a vibrant city and is forever changing, There is never any shortage of building work. As I have said before, if you are reliable, honest, hard working and the end product is good, word quickly spreads. info@gtcontractors.co.uk gary@gtcontractors.co.uk

ACCOLADE Heating it up We speak to local business Accolade Heating UK - a local, Plumbing, Gas, Heating and Electrics business working across London and the South. This team of professional Plumbers, Gas Engineers and Electricians are reputed to help get your plumbing, heating and electrics running again smoothly in the shortest possible time.
Accolade Heating UK has served London and the South’s residents and businesses for the last twenty five years. We talk to Accolades head man and founder Mr Jim Hill, in his own words, we all work hard on our customer service, value for money, and provide a honest and experienced service. We put a few questions to Jim to dig a little deeper into the history, ethos and future of this great local business. Explain the start up to your company? How did it begin? It all started 25 yrs ago, I was a loss adjuster working for a big company and just a number on their staff sheet. One of my closest friends and I decided to take the plunge risking a launch of something that we felt was needed for the market locally - a good quality, reliable and affordable plumbing services company. How has your company grown to be where it is now? What has contributed to your businesses success? We pride ourselves on some basic principles and good business practices, strong customer service, the very best quality of product and finish, fast and reliable. When a business or a customer books our services, we are always there until what we promised is achieved. At what point did you recognise the success of your business? We started to see much repeat business, and businesses recommending us to others they knew, one project for a customer in one road of apartment blocks, then within the days and weeks after, more in that same area would ask for quotes. Word of mouth and happy customers is the key.
Being a recognised company, please name a few of your clients or brands that you do business with? We do now have contracts with quite large businesses, and national contracts. Namely a few that you will know I am sure - Costa Coffee, but also large local businesses like Armadillo construction, even some celeb clients including former ANOTHER LEVEL band member Dane Bowers!, and a few we cannot mention. What was your aim to work closely within the direction of the media service? We have tried to keep up with all modern methods of communicating our message to the market. We have recently updated our main website and will be launching on facebook and twitter in the coming weeks, where our contractors will be able to post jobs and customers can comment as well. We are 100% proud of our work and unlike some businesses, have no fear of social media and customer feedback. The team must be pretty large these days. How many people are now part of the machine? We are still quite a compact team – we have currently 5 full time staff members, but a long list of trusted valued sub contractors and freelance workers on our books – all of which have been interviewed and tested to make sure their work levels and customer service skills match ours. And where are you sourcing your materials? Is there an eco-angle? Wherever possible we look for the eco options, including now being one of the main installers of eco technologies in
Sussex, including Solar – we see these technologies as a growing market for both our business and residential clients, Do you offer placements or apprenticeship programmes throughout colleges and universities? We do and have in the past offered apprenticeships and work closely with two of our local collages. With a strong belief in trying to help young people get a foot into the job market with a skill and trade, we always help if we can to do so. What projects/ventures have you got going on at present? We are heavily involved with a couple of large scale housing developments locally, and the contract work we have nationally with Costa Coffee always keeps our team busy, it seems that when you offer a good service, you are never short of people that want to book that service... touch wood. Which projects are you really excited about? Well I cant say too much, but we have started to work with some very well known pop artists, on two new builds. Its always amazing to do work for people that in the past you saw on TV, and heard on the radio, and brought their albums! Do you feel Brighton’s high creativity levels have contributed to your success? Brighton and Sussex - with the high levels of talent in all fields, has a high stream of new business start ups, home upgrades, and new builds. We are in a fast paced and growing part of the UK. The future is bright for Accolade, and green light for GO as more of us all go Green too! www.accoladeheatinguk.com
