Isle of Wight Rock Festival The Isle of Wight festival 2017 will take place from Thursday June 8– Sunday June 11. It’s just a short ferry trip from the mainland on the Isle of Wight (unsurprisingly). Who’s on the Isle of Wight festival line-up?Arcade Fire, Rod Stewart, David Guetta, Run DMC are headliners. Other acts announced so far include Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Vamps, Clean Bandit, Zara Larsson, George Ezra, Bastille, Jack Savoretti. What’s the vibe?Despite being born in the sixties, IOW has still got clout. Since its relaunch in 2002 it’s made an impressive name for itself by bagging classic rock outfits and rubbing them right up against their protégés. It’s on a far more laid-back plane than the island’s other big event Bestival, and the perfect festival for music heads hoping to discover new talent and see their heroes in one fell swoop. In short: a four-day, family-friendly festival with acts to suit music fans young and old.

Field Day Festival Victoria Park Over the last decade Field Day has slowly become one of London’s very best music festivals, with a consistently excellent booking policy covering the world’s finest alternative acts. The festival is more streamlined for 2017, pouring all the programming into one day – the Saturday. Aphex Twin has already been announced as the headliner, playing his first live show in the UK in almost a decade. The bill regularly incorporates everything from weird pop and indie up-and-comers to underground dance producers and folk musicians. Book now: it usually sells out. Line-up includes: Aphex Twin, Run The Jewels, Arab Strap, Death Grips, Flamingods, Nicolas Jaar, Nina Kraviz, Slowdive, Mura Masa, Abra, Clams Casino, Lasy Leshurr, Thee Oh Sees.

5 Minutes with

The Mayor

What’s it like being mayor for Brighton and Hove? How do you fit 850 engagements in, in a year? ABSOLUTE’s Shelley Welti met Brighton and Hove mayor Pete West to ask him all about his amazing year in office, just before he hands over his Gresham Blake-made mayoral robes, later this month.

Hi Councillor West, why did you want to become mayor? It is a great honour to both chair the council and act as an ambassador to the city. I like to see the mayor as the ‘head of the department of celebration’, and there is so much to celebrate about our city and its great diversity of people and communities.

How did you become mayor? I was first elected to Brighton and Hove City Council in 1996 – the longest serving Green councillor. The honour of choosing the mayor passes between the three political groups. I’m very proud to have been put forward by my Green colleagues and unanimously supported by all councillors to become mayor.

You've done lots of work in the last year – what have you been up to? I have now completed over 850 engagements: some meetings, but mostly engagements I have been invited to attend in support of what individuals and organisations are achieving. It has given me an incredible insight into the city, its boundless activity and strength of heart. I have chosen to support 27 charities, which I promote and help raise funds for. But there are many other organisations I have had the pleasure to get to know and help as much as

28

I can too. I chose the theme of ‘active life’ for my year and I have promoted physical activity and engagement in community life, as these things are so important to good health and wellbeing.

You're also passionate about Brighton's youth and start-ups and have supported lots of projects. Why is helping the city's young people and start-up businesses so important to you? Every person has huge potential to succeed and contribute. It’s often not easy finding your way in the world, and helping young people make a good start is so important for them and us all. What has been your highlight as mayor? There are many and varied highlights. Abseiling off Peacehaven cliff to raise money for the Martlets Hospice scores pretty highly. Meeting many of our newer communities who have chosen to make their homes here has been especially important to me as I am very conscious of the troubled and increasingly uncertain world we live in - and I’m very proud of the welcome we offer as a city of sanctuary. Iconic tailors Gresham Blake recently designed some amazing robes for you what do you think of them?

ABSOLUTE

They are lighter, cooler and adorned with the most moreishly strokable faux fur!

Once your year as mayor comes to end this month, what will you do next? I plan to spend time catching up with my family and the backlog of DIY! I will return to my duties as a ward councillor and take up places on committees again. I hope to use my experience and contacts I have developed as mayor to continue to help some of the organisations I see as having great potential to do good work in the city.

Do you have any words of wisdom for the next mayor? People really appreciate the acknowledgement the mayor can give to what they are doing. I remind myself everyday it’s not about me it’s all about the people I meet. So my advice to the next mayor would simply be: to enjoy your year – it will pass very quickly.

And finally; what do you love most about Brighton? I was asked at a primary school assembly what two words sum up Brighton. I wasn’t expecting that. But my answer remains: hopeful and diverse. And that is what I love about Brighton, Hove and Portslade.

GEORGE CLARKE INTERVIEW FOR

Barker and Stonehouse

Why did you want to open the new Hove Barker & Stonehouse store? As someone from the North East in Sunderland I knew Barker and Stonehouse really well growing up. The company has an amazing heritage and it’s still in the family, who I had the pleasure to meet at the Hove opening. I only get involved with brands I am passionate about and Barker and Stonehouse offer an amazing array of brands and looks, one of which is a personal favourite of mine - British brand Ercol. The Hove store showcases both contemporary and traditional looks alike and for those looking for design led interiors, this store is a real destination. Do you have any favourite Barker & Stonehouse products - or perhaps new products that you'd love in your home? I have just purchased a fantastic Ercol extending dining table that I can turn around and extend into another area to give more room when I need it – from family time to entertaining guests. I am a big fan of Mad Men, so I’m currently creating a 1950s and 60s interior at home, inspired by designers such as Charles and Ray Eames. It’s quite contemporary, but cosy at the same time. Barker and Stonehouse have a huge range of furniture that suits my taste perfectly and my recent Hove visit has added a lot more products to the shopping list!

Many of us who live in Brighton live in flats - do you have any space-saving tips for us to maximise the most out of our spaces? There is a small housing revolution happening all over the country at the moment. The key to making a small space work for you is to analyse how you live as a household. Every property will house individuals who are completely unique, so you can take the same flat layout but the style and requirements will differ for each and every one of us. Adaptability is incredibly important. For instance, in my house I need a smaller dining area for four – me and my three children, however sometimes I’ll have more people round for dinner. Therefore, furniture such as extendable dining tables are ideal for catering

32

for these extra guests when needed without taking up precious extra space on a daily basis. It’s also important to make sure you choose furniture that’s on the right scale for the room, so it doesn’t make the space look any smaller. Finally, always make sure you declutter. You don’t want to overload these smaller spaces so look for clever solutions such as integrated storage that make the most of the space available to you.

You're used to creating and making amazing small spaces not always in the home; can you share any advice with our readers to do this in their gardens? Is there anything we can do in small courtyards, patios or shared spaces to add more living space? Creating continuity from your interior to exterior is always a great way to fashion a streamlined effect. This can be done by installing large patio doors to help bring the outside in, or mirror the materials and colours found in the garden inside for the opposite effect. If you have enough space for it, a garden structure is a great way of adding a fun area away from the main house - perfect for a new study or play room for the kids. For those looking for an outside area with lower maintenance however, consider paving the space but investing in a few wellplaced potted plants and quality outdoor furniture for relaxing and entertaining. Also, make the most of the height in a smaller exterior space. Installing trellises to your walls or fences means you can use climbing plants that help inject much needed colour and greenery to the area. As the Restoration Man, we've also seen you help viewers transform old houses into stunning homes. Do you have any advice for those that live-in Brighton and want to restore an old building (from Regency townhouses

ABSOLUTE

to 1960's built flats)? What should we know or do before we do anything? Think about the history of the building itself and try to embrace its former use as these properties have a genuine character. Working with an architect will help you to find the balance between the building’s natural style and your own personal taste. You should see an architect or interior designer as a worthwhile investment for any home project but especially when restoring older buildings. Your home is a huge financial commitment so it has to be right. The difference an architect can make to a renovation project is indispensable thanks to the level of expertise and experience they will bring. When making this type of financial commitment, just consider investing that little bit more to reap the benefits. Also, if further down the line you are considering selling, you can then also add the ‘architect designed’ label to your property to help increase your home’s value. You're a fan of Sussex and are a regular visitor - when you're not visiting Will's workshop in nearby Lewes, what else do you enjoy doing in the area?

I spend a lot of time in Sussex and always enjoy being here. There is so much to do in the area, from the bustle of the sea front to the amazing shops and restaurants. As an architect, I am always drawn to the fantastic array of buildings, from the traditional Georgian properties to the new build flats, there is always something that catches my eye. And finally, can you tell us about any exciting projects you're working on and when we can next see you on the TV?

I’m a very lucky man as what I love about my career is that it’s varied – I can get involved in architecture as well as design. I have the luxury of talking about buildings and travelling – I’m off to New Zealand filming soon, and Norway and Japan, which will be fantastic. There is a new Amazing Spaces on the cards, and another show that is yet to be revealed – so watch this space!

A New Era For

The Dyke

The Dyke pub has been a staple visit for locals, tourists and ramblers for decades, with it’s most recent years being under the watchful eye of owner Martin Webb. Offering traditional pub values, great food and unparalleled views, it’s not hard to see why the community rallied together in support when the firm favourite was in jeopardy of closure. Absolute met up with Martin Webb to find out just what happened, what's happening now and what the future holds for The Dyke.

What initially caused you to unfortunately have to close the Dyke Pub? After running the pub for over 7 years we finally decided to close when it had been loosing money for a while. It’s was a very big pub and the running costs were huge – staffing, business rates, heating had all increased significantly and we were having trouble making the pub busy outside of the peak weekend opening times. The problem with a very big pub is that if it isn’t busy, there can be a lack of ‘atmosphere’ and people choose to go elsewhere. We tried everything we could to stimulate the business and only last spring we invested considerably in a refit to try and boost trade. Unfortunately, we couldn’t make it pay so the hard decision was taken to close and explore alternative uses for the building. Having closed down, what were the plans for the premises moving forward? We originally planned to operate the ground floor as a shop – it’s a big light space and it’s proved perfect for our antique business, Emporium. The shop has taken off really well and we have lots of people

36

travelling from all over the city to come and take a look and browse our stock.

Your current plans appear very different. What was it that sparked the change? We were really surprised by the level of feeling for the Dyke Pub. It’s clear that people really missed the pub and wanted to see it return. We read all the different opinions posted on the ‘Save the Dyke’ Facebook page and decided to change our plans to take these community points of view into account. I’m from a family with at least six generations in Brighton, so we wanted to do the right thing for the city and come up with an alternative plan that would listen to the views of the community.

To have such an outcry from the community must have been very flattering. Why do you think there is such compassion for the Dyke Pub? It was flattering in the sense that we must have been running the pub in a manner that people liked if its closure was so upsetting. We always tried to make the Dyke a pub that catered to as many different elements of the

ABSOLUTE

community as possible. We tried to make it family friendly as well as being more grown up in the evenings. The problem we always had was that although plenty of individuals liked the pub, not enough of them came in at any one time to make it work as a business. Having listened to your public, you have since submitted plans for a whole new multipurpose venture within the property. Please can you tell us about this? We’re really excited about our revised plans for the Dyke site! The most important aspect is that the pub will be reopening in half of the ground floor. We think that by opening a smaller pub we can make it more atmospheric, more sustainable as a result it will be there for the long term. Although it will be half the original size, it will still be as big, or bigger than most other pubs in the area. The most important thing is that it will be a ‘real’ pub with ales, craft beers and lovely food. As for the other half of the ground floor, we’ll continue to operate our antiques shop Emporium. We think the new pub and the shop for complement each other really well.

“

Martin Webb has always been a prolific businessman if the Dyke Pub is to survive for generations to come, he is the best hope for its long term welfare, Secondly Martin Webb over many years have given back very generously to Charities within Brighton and Hove, a great part of the Robin Hood pub was its profits were given out to local causes, Martin is a great asset to the City, and continues to make a great impact." Paul Young CEO - Off The Fence Charity

ABSOLUTE

37

How was the response from the public towards these exciting new plans? Everyone we’ve spoken to thinks it’s a great idea and a realistic compromise. We think that we’ve come up with a pragmatic middle way and the feedback we’ve had is that people appreciate this. Of course, there are some people who’d like the whole pub to reopen, but be don’t see that as a financial possibility. People that have spoken to us are just looking forward to getting a great place back to meet, eat and drink at. You mention paying off your business mortgage. How will this be possible? We’re planning on building 2 new flats in the roof space above the old pub. It’s huge up there and perfect for a loft conversion. By using this dead space and selling the flats, we can pay off our mortgage and then run the pub debt free.

What are the biggest hurdles you have had to climb throughout the process? We’re currently only half way through the process of the getting the pub reopened. We’ve recently applied for the necessary planning permission and if we get that, then we’ll start on the actual construction phase. We really hope that people will rally around our planning application - if we don’tget it then the ground floor will remain as a shop, disappointing lots of our old regulars. Fingers crossed for a positive result! You have clearly paid a lot of attention to the feedback you've received from the locals and have created a sympathetic plan moving forward. To what extent do you feel the local council have assisted you and supported you in those decisions? We’ve not had a lot of interaction with the local council, but local MP Caroline Lucas has been actively involved in trying to find a solution and sent a representative to meet with us. Local Councillor Geoffrey Theobald has also kindly offered his time to help arrange meetings between the community groups and ourselves. Generally everyone has been very helpful – especially when they’ve realised that we’re trying to work towards a working solution for this building that addresses the needs of the community and the financial pressures of the business. No solution is ever going to be perfect and keep everyone happy, but on this occasion we think we’ve got as close as we can get.

"We really hope that people will rally around our planning application - if we don’tget it then the ground floor will remain as a shop, disappointing lots of our old regulars. Fingers crossed for a positive result! " The Absolute team cannot wait to experience the new Dyke Pub and Shop! What can we expect? We think people are going to love the new Dyke Pub. It’s all going to be about great food, drink and service. The place is going to be fully refurbished and will be a fantastic destination to take the family or socialise with friends. We’re really excited and can’t wait to get the green light to crack on with this exciting new chapter in the history of the Dyke Pub!

“ I think it's good news that

the Dyke Pub has been given a life-line and a second chance to serve the local community. While many pub businesses are struggling to survive, this is a great example of the local community working with the building's owners to come up with a practical solution that ensures the survival of a pub at the site. Pub's need to reinvent themselves in order to thrive in modern environment and this example show's that closure doesn't have to be the only option." Peter Kyle MP

BRICTT Brighton Institute for Contemporary Theatre Training to offer unique degree course for Performing Arts

Performing Arts training has a new home in our eclectic and creative city of Brighton & Hove.

The BRICTT mantra is built on engaging the students in high quality vocational training to develop the necessary skills and then use the extensive network of film, TV and theatre professionals to propel the careers of students into the working professional world.

O

pening it’s doors to the first cohort of students in September 2017, the Brighton Institute for Contemporary Theatre Training (BRICTT) powered by BIMM, will be offering Brighton’s only BA (Hons) course in Acting and Performance, as well as an extended diploma course in Performing Arts. Brighton provides the perfect backdrop for the courses, with a thriving arts scene that students will be encouraged to take part in – from Brighton Fringe, England’s largest Fringe Festival to the curated Brighton Festival, which this year will be artistically directed by Kate Tempest. Both courses also have strong ties to BIMM, and The Theatre Royal, providing unique opportunities to collaborate with up and coming musicians and creatives locally and nationally.

The degree will be built around ‘The BRICTT Trinity’ of acting, dance and vocal technique.

44 44

BRICTT is the brainchild of Mia Bird, the founder of Brighton’s most loved performing arts space, Bird Studios. An industry veteran with decades of experience in working with all areas of the entertainment business, Mia's goal is to train highly talented individuals and prepare them entry into the industry via auditions and casting calls, and to also hone in their skills so they will be able to produce their own projects.

The crux of the philosophy behind the course curriculum and delivery method for BRICTT is to present the industry with individuals who are not only talented and professionally trained, but also well equipped, physically and mentally, to face the inevitable challenges they will encounter as they step foot into the industry. The core syllabus therefore includes topics that are not generally seen on a performing arts training curriculum. Physical fitness, well-being, professional development, money management and entrepreneurial skills are a few of the topics that are introduced to the students during their program at BRICTT .

ABSOLUTE

Mia, along with a stellar team and faculty line up, offer the students a robust network of high quality professionals and industry experts. It is this hand-picked, highly curated network that will spring into action once BRICTT commences its courses in September.

Successful completion of the BRICTT DIPLOMA will gain students a nationally recognised RSL Extended Diploma qualification, equivalent to three A-levels. The intensive two-year course will focus students to develop their technique and performance skills in acting, dance and vocals, through exceptional professional training by recognised West End and industry professionals. The BRICTT mantra is built on engaging the students in high quality vocational training to develop the necessary skills and then use the extensive network of film, TV and theatre professionals to propel the careers of students into the working professional world. Each year students will take part in a wide cross section of theatrical productions,

culminating in an Industry Showcase where graduates will perform to agents, casting directors and producers in the heart of London’s West End.

Their first cohort of students will set the bar for future BRICTT students and the possibilities available to them. There is not likely to be a better course for students looking to break into the industry, with the focus being intensely magnified on each individual student’s progress and the extensive professional industry connections on hand today in the UK and US.

All of BRICTT’s UK undergraduate threeyear degree courses are £9,000 per year for UK students and, as with all validated degree courses funding is available through student loans of up to £6,125.00 per year plus subsistence. Chimney House, Dogs are very welcome during the day at SkyFall with dog bowls & treats available for your four legged friends and they are also welcome on quieter evenings during the week. Busy evenings are a bit different though as the venue becomes a little noisy with live music, lots of people and therefore there is less space for dogs. Definitely a venue to try however maybe not a good idea on those busier evenings.

Bohemia

Legends

Bring your own Cocktail is the newest bar to join the ever expanding plethora of drinking establishments popping up. This type of bar is the first of its kind in Brighton as alcohol is not available to buy on the premises and there is no drinks menu. You and your friends are invited to bring your favourite spirits and hire one of the expert bartenders to mix whatever drink you desire. The cocktails are prepared and served in front of you from a trolley with a selection of cocktail acompliments. You pay a flat fee for a set amount of time with the mixologist. This is great idea if you love cocktails and are on a budget and its lots of fun getting the staff to create your favourite tipple.

If you are looking for a premier cocktail bar with lots of atmosphere then this the place for you. Bohemia is a great place to spend your evening. Spread over 3 floors it has a large central bar on the ground floor with highly trained bar staff on hand to mix cocktails that won’t disappoint. They are a bit pricey but definitely worth it. The first floor has a late lounge, specialising in champagne and even has a cigar menu. The lounge opens Friday and Saturdays till late and has Djs every evening if you fancy a dance. The top floor even has a beautiful glass walled Veuve Clicquot Champagne roof garden complete with AstroTurf.

If you’re after a Sex and the City venue then look no further. My Hotel is a beautifully crafted bar with curved walls, gilding pewter surfaces and low lighting, reflecting a warm and spacious cocoon. As part of the My Hotel franchise, the bar is open to non-guests to enjoy some beautifully made cocktails, a sophisticated atmosphere and an altogether glamorous night out. The bar staff are knowledgeable and helpful. This is a good place for special occasions. Everyone gets super dressed up so if you are looking to get your glad rags on and feel special this could be the place for you.

If you are looking for a good, old fashioned, comfy pub with a great atmosphere then this is the place for you. The Lion and Lobster is very popular with the locals and has become a bit of a Brighton institution. It is a good venue to start your night before going out on the town. The pub is spread over three floors with a main bar downstairs complete with cosy real fires in winter. The second floor has a small bar within a beautiful dining room and the third floor is the outside smoker’s area complete with mini bar and outside heaters. The Sunday roasts are very popular but make sure you get there early.

Lucky Voice Karaoke

Neighbourhood

This is an ideal venue for pre-drinks if you are out on a hen or stag night or with a big groups of friends. The drinks are cheap with lots of offers on shots. The bar staff are very friendly and service is speedy. There is always a DJ downstairs playing popular tunes to get your night started. The atmosphere is fun but cheesy.

Bringing the jazzy style of some of Japan’s most infamous karaoke bars, Lucky Voice is a playground for the amateur performer, the ignorant out of tuner or the stage stunna. Whether you can sing or not, grab your mates, get a booth and wait for the classic tunes to roll out for a feel good night like no other. There’s a cocktail bar lined with sofas for lounging and boozing too.

Cool and quirky are words that don’t feel like they quite cut it at this laid back dive bar just shy of Kemp Town. If you’re not seduced by Neighbourhood’s cracking beer garden brimming with brightly coloured furniture and it’s own bar, you’ll be inside taking in two floors worth of Brooklyn inspired insanity. From vintage wares and magazine. smothered walls to locally produced art work and mis-matched furniture, Neighbourhood have eclectic spot on.

Worthing continues to up the coffee game with the opening of the latest Small Batch coffee shop. Based on the Portland Road which has seen welcome changes of late, this lively outlet certainly delivers...

The Cappuccino Kid

When you think of Worthing, you probably assume there won't be a glutt of coffee shops compared to Brighton. This could be true, but it's certainly made up by the quality of the new shops on the scene. Small Batch opened the doors of the Worthing shop last October and has quickly built up a regular following of coffee aficionados. This branch has certainly become my favourite. It's well located with cheap parking nearby.

The interior has a cutting edge design with a tasteful mixture of wood and metals. Considered lighting design adorns the space and there is a mixture of high and low table seating. The staff are ever friendly, efficient and well trained. I've had previous critisims of the chain but have nothing but praise for this branch. Every one of the numerous flat whites deliverd to me has been perfect. A balanced mix of strength, bitterness and sweetness have satisfied my taste. Consistency is their game.

Small Batch branches offer high quality retail coffees. A wide range of beans are available with their ever popular 'Origin of the month'. Currently on sale is the Indonesia. The coffee of the month is the Java Sigarar Utang - a fully washed variety from the Frinsa Estate in Java. The coffee from Indonesia is often heavy bodied lacking in complexity and acidity. The Sigarar Utang is a very special find. Small Batch claim this coffee to be some of the finest from Indonesia. "This is an exceptionally

Nitro Cold Brew is available in the Worthing shop (and in Brighton's Jubilee st branch), A great new innovation in coffee where a special blended, cold brewed coffee is mixed with nitrogen as it is served via a beer-style tap. The nitrogen helps add a sweetness and velvety mouthfeel, very similar to a pint of Guiness. A refreshing alternative!

INTRODUCTION BRIGHTON PROPERTY MARKET OVERVIEW – POST BREXIT Michael Ashby

W

ell that wasn’t so bad was it? Don’t know what all the fuss was about? Project Fear? More like Project Fear Not! Unfortunately, the backwards turning Brexit wheels have not yet been set in motion – the party hasn’t even started.

Initially, things didn’t look so great for both the national and local property markets immediately after June’s momentous decision. Committed buyers suddenly became anxious about putting vast sums of money down on the table. Nervous vendors started withdrawing their properties from the market ‘until things had settled down a bit’. Those sellers that were still keen/ needed to sell were suddenly having to accept reduced offers – something we hadn’t seen across the board for over a decade since the heady days of 2008.

But, gradually the local city market started to shake off the shock of allowing the public to vote on such important issues. Confidence started to creep back in whilst the politicians continued to work out who would be left standing to lead the victorious Brexit negotiations. Ironically, the only person in authority who seemed to have a non-Remain plan in place (in case the public, heaven forbid, decided to vote for change) was a ‘foreigner’ – Canadian Mark Carney – the Governor of the Bank of England. His decision to meet with the heads of the major lending institutions before the Vote to ensure there was no panic retraction of available lending finance to consumers (unlike the previous recession); coupled with a substantial injection of cash (£9bn since June and counting); plus the unheralded drop in interest rates to one quarter percent; undoubtedly helped the market to take a deep breath. These measures were put in place to ensure that the financial system was ‘well-capitalised, liquid and strong’.

The one thing both the financial and property markets despise is uncertainty. For the years leading up to June’s historic vote, Brighton property had witnessed strong steady rises of around 10% year on year. This consistent growth allowed for confident advice from property professionals on not just the benefits of investing in bricks and mortar but also the likely future returns from such investments, whether for owner occupation or for rental purposes. Brexit changed all this overnight.

Unfortunately, even the creators of Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union have no idea as to what the full ramifications are for the member state ‘brave’ enough to trigger it – appropriate phrase! It was always

designed to be a nuclear style deterrent of which nobody would dare press the red button. One thing is clear that the UK, (or whatever is left of it in two years’ time if Scotland get their way?), will most likely be in a weaker trade negotiating position and may well also be made an example of to the other EU super powers, to ensure that any other wavering EU members do not also decide to roll the referendum dice.

Sterling is likely to continue to suffer too during this two-year exiting process and also inflation, and thereto the cost of living, will start to rise inextricably with household incomes subsequently squeezed. Marmite Wars will not be the only thing leaving a bad taste in the mouth. Even though nothing has actually happened yet in terms of instigating Brexit, the local property market is clearly nowhere near the activity levels of pre-Brexit, and there will undoubtedly be more troubled waters ahead to steer through. Prices are currently level with generally healthy negotiation between both buyers and sellers alike. This is an unusual scenario within Brighton & Hove property price movements which notoriously have shown a rollercoaster ride of either significant spikes over the years with the occasional sharp fall thrown in for good measure – aka 2007/8.

However, it is not all doom and gloom here in Brighton and Hove. The falling pound obviously helps tourist hotspots like Brighton. Not just from bargain hunting ‘foreigners’ but also staycationers feeling the pinch of sterling’s current close parity with the Euro – not to mention the distinct possibility of having to apply for, and pay for, visas to travel around EU countries in the future. The City has also demonstrated its resilience to property downturns in the past. In particular, last decade’s economic recession only saw property prices fall in the area during 2008 and the latter part of the previous year. By 2009 prices started to rise which was only matched by the City of London. This scenario is very different this time around in that it will be exclusively felt in the UK, plus the prime London property hotspots have undoubtedly taken a massive hit since June’s vote, with no signs of recovering activity and/or prices yet on the horizon. Many would argue these market sectors were overheated in the first place and the champagne bubble needed to burst to make property more affordable again, particularly for first-time buyers. Alas a falling property market only seems to bring out the worst in consumers. Confidence erodes away as buyers, both in the retail

ABSOLUTE

and property sectors, batten down the hatches and sit on their hands until there is light at the end of the dark tunnel. Only a few vulture investors are left picking up bare bone rock-bottom bargains which don’t help enough to bolster the depressed market. This is further compounded by the nervous Banks overreacting by tightening their lending criteria to make it so much more difficult for those buyers still out there trying to bravely bid in a falling market.

As any property surveyor, estate agent, conveyancer, broker, or anyone else connected with the property world, will tell you it’s not falling prices that are the problem – it’s falling transactions. Basic Keynesian supply and demand economics should mean that the acute shortage of available housing stock in the Brighton area, restricted by geographical constraints from the English Channel to the south and the recently designated South Downs National Park to the north, combined with the slow progress of any proposed large housing developments actually coming to fruition, should result in continued property price hikes from the seemingly never-ending demand for property in the City, particular from London buyers/investors. This does not however, translate into the real world when macro-economic factors such as these have such a significant impact on the market. Whatever the repercussions to the economy over the next two years are, once Article 50 is triggered, the key element to avoid a property downturn is consumer confidence. It is down to every one of us, not just the property professionals and analysts, to talk up the market and to keep spending with confidence. This is the best and only way to navigate the stormy seas of uncertainty that lie ahead. It’s no use those of us who voted to Remain, (or more regrettably didn’t bother to vote at all), to say ‘I told you so!!’ If the UK economy catches a cold, then we all suffer. I’d rather the experts ‘we’ve had enough of’ be proved to be wrong and that the fact less phrase I frequently hear of ‘don’t worry everything will turn out alright in the end’ does hold true. For I can take solace that my hometown of Brighton and Hove once again showed its acceptance of diversity and forward thinking by voting over 2 to 1 to remain proud European Brightonians. Cuckfield Bathrooms

Bathrooms by Design Cuckfield Bathrooms is located in the heart of the village and has been for the past 7 years. Having initially opened a modest sized showroom in 2011, high demands from the Sussex and South East marketplace called for expansion, seeing the opening of the impressive premises we see today at the Clockhouse on the High Street.

T

his move was a clear indication of the owners Jobe and Jim’s success thus far and there are clear reasons for this well deserved

accreditation. Their forté lies in their breadth of experience, their range of products and the

bespoke services they offer their clients, such as

a free of charge 3D design service and pre-order site visits.

The bathroom design market in Sussex is

healthy and growing, but Cuckfield Bathrooms

also work with property developers, architects and interior designers in London; so they

are well placed to inform the local market on developing design and product innovations.

Cuckfield Bathrooms rely heavily on excellent customer service and pride themselves on

there always being someone at the end of the

phone or an email, ready to meet their client’s

demands. They are predominantly a design and supply company using installers who are top of

their game. The process often begins by creating a 3D CAD drawing from either a site visit or

architects plans so the client can envisage their

dream bathroom. All designers are trained in 3D

CAD (computer aided design) with Virtual Worlds software.

The process often begins by creating a 3D CAD drawing from either a site visit or architects plans so the client can envisage their dream bathroom. Â All designers are trained in 3D CAD (computer aided design) with Virtual Worlds software. Working from either Architects plans or a site visit, they input the measurements into their software and create the walls, windows and doors for your room. From here, the designer can input scaled products from their many bathroom suppliers to draw up an idea of how the room will look. Various sizes and finishes can be determined as well as tiling patterns so you can envisage your future bathroom. Â Once this is complete, they email a document showing the design with some various angles or get you to go to the showrooms itself and go through the designs together. 3D designing is vital to make sure everything fits into the room to avoid mistakes and ensure a smoother process. It is also very handy for your installer to have a set of drawings whilst he gets to work! Cuckfield Bathrooms have a wide and impressive range of displays over two floors and have access to almost every supplier to give the customer the widest range to find exactly what they want. Â By building close relationships with suppliers, including lighting, tiling, general purpose radiators and underfloor heating, the team pride themselves on having extensive product knowledge, competitive rates and a seamless supply process.

Cuckfield Bathrooms

Bathrooms by Design Cuckfield Bathrooms have area brand exclusivity to many top drawer brands such as Samuel Heath (British made high end traditional taps and showers), Dornbracht (high end German contemporary taps and showers), Porter Vanities and Artelinea (Italian designed and made glass front contemporary vanity units). For those who relish the charms of a more traditional bathroom, suppliers such as William Holland (beautiful hand finished traditional freestanding baths) and Thomas Crapper (the original classic water closet) come highly recommended.

Suppliers are chosen from all around the globe, all selected for their excellence in craftsmanship, functionality and design. From Spain come Inbani (modular bespoke furniture in almost any finish), from America comes Graff (high spec finish taps and showers) and from our friends across the Channel comes THG Paris (French made and designed very high end taps and showers, using various French crystal and a wide range of finishes).

Cuckfield Bathrooms cater for all budgets and take joy in achieving the look you want within that budget. Once an order has been confirmed, they will store it until you need it delivered to site. The company uses a local family run warehouse in Gatwick and often do a'first fix' and a 'second fix' delivery free of charge. They also work with some of the best installers in Sussex. These guys only install bathrooms meaning their attention to detail is second to none. They can also do everything themselves including electrics and tiling which results in a quicker turnaround. They are not employed by Cuckfield Bathrooms and therefore will do a site visit and give you their own price - that way there are no hidden charges on top and you get the best price! "Cuckfield bathrooms are my 'go to' bathroom supplier when looking for what's on trend in bathrooms. Their showroom is beautiful, easily accessible and well laid out. Jim & Jobe are friendly and efficient and on hand with great advice when required. It's good to be able to purchase all bathroom products from one supplier, from top end for a sensational ensuite to standard for a simple downstairs loo. Thanks Jim & Jobe." Simon Dixon Artist

On May 11th, Hotel Pelirocco hosted a private view to launch an exhibition of work from Brighton artist Simon Dixon. The wet and humid weather didn’t deter a packed throng from celebrating the work of the much-loved artist who passed away in February this year.

Striking, vibrant and colourful, Dixon’s prints and paintings of 20th century music icons included Paul Weller, Elvis Presley, John Lydon, Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop, Joe Strummer, Lemmy and Poison Ivy from The Cramps – a fitting selection for ‘England’s most rock & roll hotel’.

Amongst the diverse selection of guests were Dada Art Projects supremo Stefania Dal Ferro, City Reads founder Sarah Hutchings, rockabilly band The Hillmans and fellow Brighton-based artists Jim Sanders, Seiko Kato, Paul Ostrer and Sarah Shaw. Also in attendance were members of Simon’s family including his brother Sam, who organised the event with fellow ‘Team Dixon’ members Jo Whitley and Séan Baldwin. “We feel that the Pelirocco, with its unique style and appreciation of great music, is the ideal venue to display Simon’s iconic work,” says Jo. “It was always hoped that a Dixon exhibition would occur here during Simon’s lifetime but sadly it never transpired. So it’s important at

22

this particular point in time for friends and family to be able to raise a glass and honour his work in this very special location.” Sam says, “Simon was a DJ back in the 90s, playing ska and R & B classics at the Catfish Club. Music and pop culture were huge influences on his output so it makes perfect sense to be here.”

“It’s great to see so many different types here too,” adds Séan. “Simon was a renowned connector of people from across a broad spectrum. He was very much at the hub of the local creative scene but he never liked to be the centre of attention. He was a humble man who took his work very seriously and never compromised his vision, even when taking on private commissions. If he wasn’t inspired by the subject then it was off the cards, simple as that.” Dixon’s work not only featured musicians but was also collected by some, including Shaun

ABSOLUTE

Ryder, Sharleen Spiteri and Dougie Payne from Travis. Before he was struck by illness in his 20s, Simon was a talented footballer and his portrait of Dick Knight features on the cover of the Brighton & Hove Albion life president’s autobiography, and is currently hanging In Dick’s Bar at the Amex stadium.

In accordance with Dixon’s wishes, his limited edition pictures will continue to reach their audience. The prints are lovingly produced to the highest possible standard by Fine Art Guild accredited Eye 4 Colour Printmakers, based in Brighton. In order for the work to be authenticated, the prints will feature a DIXON embossed stamp as well as being titled and numbered. They can be purchased via the website below. The exhibition runs until July 5th where visitors are welcome to come and view the art. www.simondixon.net

The Taste of Modern

Tapas

Founded in 2015, Señor Buddha has been the hidden gem of Brighton, just off the beaten track.

B

righton's London Road has been reinventing itself over the past few years with trendy gyms, cafes, and eateries. The vibe is youthful, exciting and it's a perfect location for this distinctively stylish and truly welcoming contemporary restaurant. A culinary synthesis of Spanish and South East Asia, this little diamond is the result of Lee Shipley and his wife's hard work. Their love of Ibiza's chilled, social dining culture and their extensive travels around Asia inspired this dynamic duo to bring a taste of modern tapas to our UK shores. Small plates full of colour artistry and vibrancy are promised to diners, combining the elements of the proprietors favourited cultures.

Fusion food traditionally appeared where communities were in close proximity. Now with global travel, the internet and people's desire for exotic adventure and ultimately really good flavoursome food, fusion restaurants are thriving around the UK. This contemporary tapas and wine bar is showcasing its strength and opening the cities eyes to what tapas actually is.

60

Many people still perceive tapas as mere nibbles to a accompliment a glass of wine, but the reality is tapas are full of flavour , technique and with the emphasis is on the socio-cultural element of sharing food.

As spring is in the air and being a season of awakenings, I thought what better place to take a visit and awaken my tastebuds. The atmosphere in Señor Buddha was spilling out onto the street and as I walked through the door, the intimate dining room was full of life and buzzing with excitement. Young and vibrant, I immediately felt transported away from the grey wet weather on the other side of the door.

Dark wood furnishings, candlelit tables, and bare brick work set the scene. The stainless steel streamlined kitchen is the focal point which is a daring move for such a bijoux venue, but indeed a sign of confidence and taking food seriously. The energy from the kitchen was electric and as our waitress seated us, I could not keep my eyes off the chef as he carefully prepared a small dish with precision and elegance. The menu is progressive and full of

ABSOLUTE

artful combinations from 'Crusted lamb fillet in blood orange and fennel purée' to 'Salted cod loin in miso and yuzu broth'.

The dishes are thought-provoking and a fury of flavour. I throughly enjoyed having the opportunity to try several dishes at once. Our main tapas dishes consisted of 'Sesame sticky pork ribs', 'Potato and caper filled tortilla' and 'Gurnard ceviche'. The wine list is divine and you are sure to find the perfect tipple to match your tapas selection.

The team in Señor Buddha are on a constant journey, learning and expanding their culinary repertoire. A fresh menu is created each day with prices ranging from £4 pounds to £10. With so many wonderful choices on the menu, I can see why so many locals are making this restaurant a weekly ritual. It's warm and welcoming and the kind of place you can truly unwind and enjoy your culinary delights. There is a depth of flavour not only in the food but also in the team. A true gem and booking in advance is highly recommend.

Lemon Grass Thai WORTHING Where Old Meets New Sat proudly for over a decade in Worthing’s Bohemian ‘West End,’ Lemon Grass Thai is one of the seaside town’s best kept secrets. Locals flock to this contemporary restaurant, be it for a casual lunch, birthday celebration or romantic meal for two, all safe in the knowledge that whatever the occasion, they will receive innovative Thai cuisine with exceptional service.

S

ince the opening of this gem in Worthing’s culinary crown, the chefs at Lemon Grass Thai have spent years developing the exciting menu offered today, where old favourites sit side by side signature innovations.

Our visit to Lemon Grass Thai was a family affair lunch on a Bank Holiday Monday. I was joined by my husband and daughter her very first Thai restaurant experience at the tender age of 18 months. The welcome we received was that of a long lost friend; warm, friendly and very helpful. Nothing was too much trouble, a high chair was ready and waiting for us, space had been allowed for the pram and a good portion of prawn crackers (a firm favourite now) was ready to greet us and pacify the youngest diner. The restaurant is bright and airy, with pale hues creating a relaxing and calm environment to dine. The waiting team are helpful but never intrusive, willing to guide you in your menu choices, but leaving you space to enjoy the experience for yourself. We started our lunch with a smorgasbord of traditional Thai staple starters, known as the Lemon Grass Mixed Platter (for 2 people) at £11.95. This selection of vegetable spring rolls, prawn tempura, chicken satay, prawn toast and fish cakes, served with a variety of sauces is as much a feast for the eyes as it is the mouth. Each element of the dish was cooked to perfection, with crispy tempura, moist chicken in a comforting stay sauce and the fish cakes tasting fresh and infused with herbs and spices that sing in your mouth.

64 64

When it came to choosing our mains, we were happy to be guided by the new owner, who is a mind full of information when it comes to his beloved new project and the cuisine he has a clear passion for. .,,lmn udc The main courses on offer are as diverse and delicious as the starters. Ranging from traditional stir fries and curries to exquisite seafood dishes, this is where old meets new. Particular dishes of notoriety are the ‘Gaen Phed Ped Curry’ a chef’s speciality roasted duck red curry consisting of delicate slices of roasted duck in a spicy red curry sauce, coconut milk, tomatoes, lychees, sweet basil and lime leaves and the popular ‘Hoy shell pad kra prau’ (Hot and spicy stir fried scallops with fresh chilli, basil leave, garlic, onions, red peppers and long beans).

We decided to opt for a whole selection of dishes to enjoy between us. The ‘Gaeng massa-man’, a beef Massaman curry made with new potatoes, simmered in coconut milk topped with cashew nuts and deep fried shallots, was simply divine. The beautifully tender beef in a comforting and fragrant sauce was enjoyed by the whole table, accompanied by a side of fresh broccoli doused in oyster and garlic sauce and the obligatory serving of Jasmine Rice. This is food that is well portioned and extremely well presented with carved vegetable sculptures adorning the plates, but what sets it apart from the rest is the freshness of the ingredients used. You can identify every herb or spice in each dish, lovingly fused

together to create mind-blowing sauces and marinades. Additional dishes selected were the Thai classic ‘Chicken Pad Thai’, ‘Laab Kai’, a minced chicken salad with a feisty chilli kick and ‘Pad Prik’ (Stir fried beef with fresh onions, red peppers, spring onions and chilli). I’m a Thai food enthusiast and have worked my way round many a Thai restaurant, but these dishes were on another level. The chefs at Lemongrass are master craftsmen and this is so evident from the plates they produce. Lemon Grass Thai offers a lengthy wine list that includes over 10 different bottles of red and white wines, suiting all budgets as well as traditional Thai desserts that provide the perfect finale to the theatrical and simply delicious gastronomical adventure.

In order to meet demand, Lemon Grass Thai are now open 7 days a week, for both dinner and lunch and offer both the a la carte menu as well as a special ‘3 Course Meal for Two’ deal for £21.95, which consists of a Mixed Starter for 2, plus any main from the a la carte menu and rice or noodle accompaniment (seafood, chef specials and grilled are £4.50 extra).

SYLVAN OAK Big flavours from a little village

Just down the road from Brighton lies the picture perfect Findon, an idyllic chocolate box village just 10 minutes north of Worthing, whose community boasts a delicious secret; it is home to the highly acclaimed restaurant, The Sylvan Oak.

Sylvan Oak restaurant was born because of a very strong family tradition in the restaurant business with a consuming passion for excellent food. Having owned a portfolio of highly successful restaurants within the area for a number of decades, the family's current establishment has been attracting diners from far and wide, all lured by the owner Sinan's unique culinary style. Influenced by the basis and style of French cuisine and their delicate flavours and techniques, the Sylvan Oak menu takes inspiration from the traditional and marries it with the contemporary using European, Middle Eastern and Asian influences.

flavour, yet not over-powering as synergy between flavours, colour, texture and aroma are so carefully thought out during hours of experimenting to get each dish perfect.

Situated on the site of what was historically a bank and subsequently many other restaurants over the years including a fish restaurant, the building itself is both quaint in that many original features remain, but also beautifully and respectfully contemporary. You could say that the setting is the perfect mirror to the menu itself where tradition meets innovation and modern elegance. Oak flooring elm bar and exposed beams go towards creating an elegant and relaxed dining room. There are currently grand plans to extend the current dining room ready for the festive season and install a feature open kitchen so as to allow diners to share on the theatrics of the culinary craftsmanship. To the rear of the restaurant lies a secret sun-terrace which provides the perfect al fresco retreat for those balmy summer days.

so very evident that each dish is put together with such finesse and attention to details. Every ingredient has been prepared so that it's flavour is showcased beautifully and delicately balanced with its comrades on the plate.

Due to it's sheer popularity, bagging a reservation at the Sylvan Oak isn't easy and so when we were invited to review this sought after restaurant, we were thrilled to accept and beat the waiting lists!

The menu itself changes on a regular basis, dependent on seasonal produce and Chef's inspirations at the time. What is always guaranteed is that every dish is bursting with

68

The main menu is offered at £30 for two courses and £36 for three. Also available is the Select Menu which is available Wednesday to Saturday lunch and Tuesday to Thursday evening (two courses £20 and three courses £26) and Sunday lunch starts at £24.00 for 2 courses. For starters I opted for the 'Nutbourne Heritage Tomatoes Salad, Tomato Tartare & Goats Cheese Custard'; a light and fresh dish, celebrating the humble tomato, married beautifully with the comforting and smooth savoury custard. My husband opted for the 'Crayfish Tails Cocktail with Avocado, Mango and Papaya' which proved exotic in both appearance a flavour. It is

Choosing the main course was more of a struggle as the menu is jam-packed with food people really want to eat! After much deliberation we both went down the seafood route. I chose the 'Cod with Leek Rosti, Julienne Vegetable Tempura, Vanilla Saffron & Coriander Sauce' and the hubby went for the 'Wild Sea Trout with Crushed Peas, Sweet Potato Gnocchi, Asparagus & Pink Grapefruit Veloute'. Both dishes were visually magnificent, with each aspect of the dish presented with artistic flair and consideration. The fish itself fell apart as it met our forks, so very fresh and soft on the palette, singing with the flavours of the sea. My highlight was the Julienne Vegetable Tempura; a wonderfully chaotic haystack of thinly coated vegetables, including carrots and aubergine,

ABSOLUTE

offering a suitable sweetness to the dish.

Dining at the Sylvan Oak is an unhurried experience. The waiting team allow you to relax in the calm surroundings and take time to savour every mouthful of your chosen dish, whilst always being subtlety on hand should you require any assistance. Our experience was the perfect testimony to the restaurant's philosophy - a belief in relaxed, affordable and unhurried fine food experience and and an insistence on sourcing local Sussex ingredients and drink wherever possible. The dessert menu was once again brimming with favourites with a twist, but we both chose the classic 'Hot Chocolate Fondant with Madagascar Vanilla Ice Cream' - the ultimate pudding test! These soft sponged domes of heavenly oozing chocolate were a very fine creation indeed. Matched with the smooth and creamy ice cream and the take-your-time ethos, we enjoyed 15 minutes of uninterrupted gastronomic bliss.

The Sylvan Oak is ideal for family celebrations, that intimate supper or it can even be privately hired for a party or special occasion. Open every day aside from Mondays and open for both lunch and dinners, this is a very popular restaurant that currently turns away more diners than they are able to seat! Although the refurbishment and extension will allow for more covers, we advise you to book well in advance as this is a restaurant that is worth the trip in the car for, and once made, it's a trip I guarantee you will be making time and time again

BLOCK.

A Gastrobar to

Galvanise In Brighton we are surrounded by an ever-increasing assortment of swanky wine bars, pubs with craft beers and an array of top notch restaurants fusing flavours from around the world. If you are ready for escapism and an exciting new experience then Block is for you!

T

his punk rock wine vibed venue is tearing down the preconceived ideas of a traditional wine bar. The subtle snobbery of wine does not exist when you walk through the doors of Block on St James Street. Formerly known as Neighbourhood, the owners wanted to evolve their passion and present a modern spin on wine and a salute to Spain, a place they love and have spent a great deal of time exploring. Block is sexy, sophisticated and has a welcoming ambience that lures you in and stirs your senses. Every inch of Block indicates a creative flair and a desire to stand out from the crowd. It is chic, relaxed, inventive and exhilarating. Lush foliage decorates a feature wall and the exposed brick work provides a perfect backdrop for the mesmerising wine bottles adorned with skulls and naked ladies on roller skates. The vibe is an interpretation of a modern Spanish gastrobar where you can have a fantastic glass of wine, incredible food and then stay on as the music and the energy rises and the party starts! It's a deliciously social place that is breaking the rules and making sophisticated wine accessible to everyone. I was invited one sunny Friday afternoon for an introduction to the new wave of cultured wines available and to sample the new menu. Upon arriving at this uber cool venue, I was asked if I would prefer

72

to dine at a table or sit at the bar. I opted for the bar as I wanted to study the bottles and chat to the team. There is also a huge garden perfect for alfresco dining or simply to sit and relax with a glass or two. From past experience, this sexy secret garden is also one of the best sun traps in this city!

I do enjoy a glass of Marlborough Sauvignon blanc, but when asked if I was up for a little wine tasting, images of sniffing, swirling and spitting filled my thoughts. However as it was explained to me everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy good wine in an unpretentious way. The old school ways do not have to be lost, but it's time to make room for something new and encourage more people to enjoy the luxury of excellent wine.

The first thing I noticed was the description of the various wines all characterised in a simplified way from dark chocolate to forest fruits. It is easy to understand and choose maybe not for the snooty wine connoisseurs, but certainly for us go-getters, jet-setters and thrill seekers as described on a rather delicious 2015 La La Land Malbec. The wine stems from the best regions around the world including Chronic Cellars in Paso Robles, California to 'Some young Punks' of Australia. These winemakers are hitting the scene with aggressive, punky labelling and lip smacking, sensually structured

ABSOLUTE

wines that rival the best in the world. The overall philosophy & mission statement for Block is 'A Civilised Cover Story for an Uncivilised Time'. This unique, enchanted venue is the template for a vibrant experience and I LOVE it!

As I sat and sipped some truly special wines we enjoyed an accompaniment of 'Manchego reserva cheese with honey truffle oil and a selection of cold meets and warm bread'. As the whole Block experience is about breaking barriers I agreed to try Block's fresh from seato-table 'Jersey Rock Oysters'. I cannot recall the last time I allowed an oyster to pass my lips, but with the finely chopped shallot vinaigrette or mignonette I was pleasantly surprised, so much so that I could not stop myself indulging in another. On Thursdays Block will be introducing a very trendy 'Fizz and Rocks' Day with Jersey Rocks for ÂŁ1.50 each and a bottle of prosecco for a very reasonable ÂŁ16 The afternoon seemed to fly by, but as they say, time does fly when you're having fun and my afternoon was certainly full of fun and frivolity. I asked our host to select his favourite items from the menu to give me an overall view of Block's taste and style. 'Blacked Octopus and Scallops in a Pinot Noir' followed as our starters and then for our main we

Block opened it's doors earlier this year and it has not taken long to generate praise for its luxe surrounding, impeccable service and knock out menu.

shared the '28 Day Matured Flat Iron Steak' and the piece de resistance or, el mejor if we are keeping to the Spanish theme; perfectly cooked 'Sea-bass with squash & sage polenta, kale pesto' and a glass of crisp Chablis. This dish was delightful and an example of culinary artistry. The whole menu at Block goes through their Spanish inspired charcoal and wood burning Bertha oven which I was told is the first of its kind here in Brighton. The Sussex crossed meat is sourced from Redlands Farm and all other ingredients are the finest, freshest and most flavoursome including cheese from the infamous 'Cheeseman of Brighton'. Block opened it's doors earlier this year and it has not taken long to generate praise for its luxe surrounding, impeccable service and knock out menu. There is a certain buzz in the air that surrounds Block. It is refreshing and on point and bridges the gap between pretentious wine bar and gastropub. It sits perfectly in the middle offering a spectacular and contemporary concept, harder, louder and perfectly avant-grade encapsulating a certain elegance and sophistication. Block is unique and this new kid is going to dominate for the summer ahead!

Brighton

Up Your Day With a Trip To Palace Pier With all the fun (and frights) of the fair, Brighton Palace Pier remains just as iconic as when it opened in 1899. It may be the biggest attraction in the South East, but that doesn’t mean that the Palace Pier’s just a place for tourists to flock to – there’s plenty to see and do for us locals, no matter how many times you’ve trod its 118 year old wooden boards. It’s time to take a stroll along Brighton Palace Pier… oh I do like to be beside the seaside!

Scream if you want to go faster.

Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or fancy some family fun, Brighton Palace Pier has a ride for you. Get your adrenaline pumping (and be prepared to scream) on the terrifying Turbo Coaster – known as the pier’s speed demon, thanks to its two steep drops and loop, spin at speed on the dizzying Galaxia and brace yourself to defy gravity as you loop and dive into the air on the amazing acrobatic Air Race. There’s also Crazy Mouse, Horror Hotel and Wild River for adrenaline junkies of all ages looking to get hearts pounding. If you want to take your daredevil ride reputation to the next level, get on the Booster! Many of us know it as THAT ride at the end of the pier; the one that catapults riders 130ft into the air, spinning them and turning them upside down in the scary, but exhilarating, process. Open your eyes (if you dare!) and enjoy some of the best views of Brighton from the top – but be quick, you won’t be up there for long as you speedily descend back down towards the sea!

Looking for something a little more leisurely but still full of nostalgic fun? Take a spin on

76

Twister, twirl in the Cup ‘n’ Saucers, belt up and accelerate on the Dodgems and whizz around on the Waltzers. Of course, no trip to the pier is complete without a ride on the quintessential Carousel’s majestic horses or a slide down the Helter Skelter – fairground institutions that all ages enjoy.

For children between 1.2m and 1.8m, the i220 is a must. This brand new ride takes you straight into the sky, spinning you around for an out-of-this-world view of Brighton. Younger ride-lovers won’t miss out either – with rides such as Dragon Fly (a colourful flying dragon ride), the fabulous Fantasia (where children can choose to drive a fire engine, a rocket or a racing car, to name just a few options) and the super-cool Mega Slide giving them plenty of giggles. To burn off extra steam, get them bouncing on the Palace Pier’s trampolines and bouncy castle or playing in Palace Play – the pier’s newest attraction!

The indoor multi-purpose soft play area (for children over 0.9 metres tall) has four fun storeys and a massive slide too. There’s also a separate play area so toddlers can also enjoy soft play fun.

ABSOLUTE

Along with the i220 and Palace Play; Palace Pier is adding an 18 player roll-a-ball Dolphin Derby this year too – to celebrate returning to their original name! Fun for all.

A pier visit just doesn’t feel right without trying your luck on the arcade machines, does it? Packed with traditional favourites (including the 2p machines!), claw toy machines and simulators; the Palace of Fun is guaranteed entertainment for all the family. Perhaps best of all, it’s all indoors, making it a great rainy day place to while away a few hours.

Your competitive side won’t just be unleashed in the Palace of Fun, The Dome – with NBA basketball game and air hockey table will see you go head-to-head with friends, family or the machine to bag yourself points to covert to amazing prizes. There’s also classics such as Hook a Duck and Tin Can Alley to try to win yourself or your beau a prize.

Up Your Day With a Trip To Palace Pier

“ Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a keen foodie or just

fancy chilling out in a deckchair with one of the most beautiful views of Brighton in your sights, Palace Pier is the perfect place to unwind, forget your worries and experience that whimsical Brighton spirit! "

Delicious seaside smells waft in the air.

When thinking of food to enjoy on the pier, tummies rumble and thoughts turn to hot sugary doughnuts, soft and creamy ice creams and of course, mouth-watering fish and chips. But these aren’t the only delicious delights to tuck into as you take a seat in the striped deckchairs.

For those with a sweet tooth, there’s crepes, milkshakes, frozen yoghurt, churros and a sweet shop filled to the brim with favourites such as Brighton rock, dummies and more. Or, if you’d prefer a savoury treat, you can choose to feast on hot dogs, burgers, sizzling sausages, rice and noodles or traditional shellfish, along with fish and chips, of course!

Speaking of fish and chips, a visit to Palm Court Restaurant is a must for all fans of sustainable seaside fare. In fact, Michelin star

78

chef Heston Blumenthal even called the Palm the ‘spiritual home of fish and chips’ – high praise indeed. Dine in style with a glass of fizz or if you can’t find a seat in this popular pier establishment, you can always take a stroll, chomping your chips as you go – just watch out for those pesky seagulls! Thirsty? You’re in luck. Palace Pier has two bars; Victoria’s and Horatio’s – both great places to enjoy a tipple or two. Victoria’s - named after the late, great queen - is a cosy bar, providing a snug spot to indulge in afternoon tea, home-cooked food and cold beers overlooking Brighton’s regency seafront, whilst Horatio’s is spacious (with room for up to 350 people) and a great bar for kicking back, watching live sports and enjoying live music. There’s a panoramic beer garden too – perfect for summer days sipping away in the sunshine.

ABSOLUTE

Thinking ahead to the summer, Palace Pier will truly come alive with the sounds of live music, as talented musicians serenade pier strollers, on each Saturday of the school holidays. But before that, Brighton’s iconic Mod Weekender (27th -29th May) will rev up the fun with the arrival of scooters, a mod tribute band and a free showing of classic Quadrophenia, all taking place on the pier.

Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a keen foodie or just fancy chilling out in a deckchair with one of the most beautiful views of Brighton in your sights, Palace Pier is the perfect place to unwind, forget your worries and experience that whimsical Brighton spirit! Cool Brighton Nightlife by Brighton Girl Problems Brighton has come a long way in recent years, and I wouldn’t blame you for feeling like you’re out and about in London for the evening if you do a night out right; there’s constantly a trendy new cocktail bar opening, an event happening or a festival on, and that’s one of the reasons Brighton is such a great place to live when you live for a night out.

W

hether you’re 21 and free as a bird wanting to hit the tiles, or married with a newborn and looking to let your hair down on your first baby-free night out, there really is something for everyone. I don’t think we have quite reached our potential in Brighton; there are so many empty venues in perfect locations that could be filled by brands wanting to do something ‘different’, in a city that would happily welcome it. We constantly seek out ‘cool’ places to visit, that we can go back to time and time again, that look great on an Instagram feed and that we can recommend to our family and friends. There is so much out there to do in the evening in Brighton, however I think a lot of us are looking in the wrong places. The city is rife with hen and stag do’s, and rightly so, as it’s a great city to party in for the weekend. However I feel many are mistaken, when arriving at Brighton Station and walking straight towards the sea, you’re met with the obvious hustle and bustle of West Street, and the outpouring of clubs and 20-somethings. Great for two nights of carefree drinking and dancing, but if you want to revisit with your loved ones, where do you go? Where does a bunch of girlfriends go for cocktails with a twist? Where do you go for a date night with a difference?

When you’re a born-and-bred Brightonian, you can do a bit of digging and you can find some gems that make for a cool, unique, and memorable night out. We are lucky enough in Brighton to be blessed with

the flamboyant and glamorous Lady Boys of Bangkok each year, which makes for a brilliant night out. Something for the more open minded of us, the tents congregate at the Old Steine, meaning you’ve got a never ending choice of nearby restaurants, bars and pubs to turn it into a night out; dinner before and drinks after will not be difficult when you’re slap bang in the centre and surrounded by so many incredible choices.

Now is an apt a time as ever to talk about my favourite night out of the year (and day out); Gay Pride. Although I love nothing more than the parades and street parties during the day, as the sun sets in Brighton on the most colourful day of the year, it’s filled with happy, dancing people and hundreds of venues open until the early hours to fuel the celebrations. As Pride fast approaches us, friends from all over are currently embroiled in Whatsapp group chats, trying to organise their plans. My advice for a great night? Stay around St James’s street

and the Kemp Town area; it’s slightly (and I mean, EVER SO slightly!) less busy later on, and full of brilliant places to head to drink and dance until the sun comes up. For something a bit different, head to the South Lanes, and pay a visit to BYOC. For £25 at the door, and whatever spirit you want to bring with you, they’ll mix you up a unique range of cocktails with your bottle, and let you simply sample and enjoy. I absolutely love this idea because you’re able to tell someone who knows exactly what they’re doing, exactly what you like. You can simply sit, chill out and relax with your friends, partner, or whoever it is you’re going along with, whilst the staff at BYOC mix you up a bunch of cocktails based on the spirit you’ve brought along. I think this would be a great place to come on a Hen/Stag do, as it’s very interactive; you feel like you’re a part of the creation side of things, as well as the sampling too! So much more interesting than your bog-standard cocktail bar, plus after you’ve paid your door fee, you end up saving money, rather than paying £10 a cocktail all night, which is the general price in Brighton. As well as all this, you can discover some seriously great new cocktails. I tend to be boring with cocktails and stick to the ones I know and love, because I don’t want to part with a steep amount of money, only for my taste buds to be left unimpressed at my choice. The only time I ever seem to get creative with my cocktail ordering as at an all inclusive hotel, and it’s a habit that needs to die!

Cool Brighton Nightlife by Brighton Girl Problems

If you’re still wanting something a bit ‘different’ to your typical dinner-and-drinks night out, why not try a Bar Crawl? You don’t have to be getting married to do one. On The Rocks Bar Crawl offers a guided service around Brighton’s coolest bars and clubs in the city centre, where 5 shots and free fast track entry, alongside discounted drinks deals will be included in the cost of your ticket. I’ve been on bar crawls before, but they were usually in places like Kavos when I was 18 years old, and they were a very different type of bar crawl to these. A touch of class is still involved, alongside venues that are actually worth visiting.

Not all nights out have to involve drinking… or at least, not surround drinking. Handmade Mysteries Clue Room Game located on Black Lion Street makes for a very interesting evening. The team game for 2 to 6 people is located in a secret room in the Black Lion Pub and is on every night from Wednesday to Sunday. It’s called a ‘twisted escape room’ and involves an hour of clue solving, with some comedic value too. I think nights like these end up being the best, because they’re so different, and with the right people, they can be absolutely hilarious. Why not try something a bit different, even if it’s out of your comfort zone? There’s only so many cocktail bars you can visit in one city before feeling like you’ve seen them all! Unfortunately until Brighton opens up it’s very own Ice Bar (someone jump on that

84

idea ASAP, please!) it’s down to you to find things to do that are a little bit ‘different’.

Proud Cabaret Brighton will take you back decades, in the most positive way. A retro supper club, alongside a burlesque, cabaret and music venue, this is sure to be a fun and unique night out, in a couple or with a group of friends. They have an offer of a 2 course dinner and show for just £25 per person which I think is a really great deal; sometimes you can reach a bit of a rut in your ‘night out’ life, and feel like you’re visiting the same pubs and bars, eating at the same restaurants and doing the same things. Even when you’re going to alternate venues, a lot of them are very similar, in menu, drinks and entertainment offerings, so it’s refreshing to have something that takes you back in time, whilst not breaking the bank either.

Lastly, I want to talk about a completely different kind of ‘night out’, but the best kind all the same. The Harbour Hotel recently opened up along the Sea Front; a gorgeous cosmopolitan chain opening in locations by the sea. It’s home to The Jetty restaurant, which boasts a menu of beautiful seafood, and most importantly, The Harbour Spa at the bottom of the hotel. My girlfriends and I visited the spa for the evening a few weeks ago, wanting an evening together in Brighton, and wanting to try something new. Hot tubs located in a wine cellar, robes and slippers provided, dimly lit rooms that are house to the swimming pools,

ABSOLUTE

and the ability to drink prosecco in the spa and then head upstairs to The Jetty for dinner afterwards, it made it one of my favourite ‘nights out’ in Brighton to date…though some may argue it to be a ‘night in’, anything that involves relaxing in warm bubbles whilst drinking cold bubbles in a wine cellar gets my vote. I’ve been to many a spa, and this was my favourite one to date; snuggled onto the corner of West Street, you wouldn’t expect to find such a relaxing and lovely venue, with such a touch of class. The spa is open until 10pm, so you can chill out until late, and then head for further drinks at the bar, or to your room if you’re staying over. £25 for unlimited access to the spa for however long you want is impressive for a completely new venue in a city such as Brighton. And, I can promise you it’s worth the spend. So, what are your favourite Brighton spots for a ‘cool’ night out, that’s a bit different? Do you want to try something new? I hope you’ve enjoyed my recommendations, and that it’s given you some inspiration to change up your regular date nights, or cocktail dates with friends. There’s nothing wrong with routine, and we all have our favourite spots, but when you live in a city that has so much to offer, it’s worth trialling something unique, just in case you fall in love with it and find a new favourite. London Lifestyle The South East London guide I love London! There is nowhere else I would rather live and work.

The parks, the restaurants, the theatres, the shops, the trains, the underground, modern sleek glass skyscrapers, concreate horizons mixed with green open spaces, the museums, beautiful architecture, the traffic, the tourists, the big red buses, the bridges, the River Thames, cocktail bars mixed with old historical pubs and microbreweries, fancy restaurants next to traditional pie and mash shops and high-rise offices next to converted Victorian townhouses; I love all of it – The East, The West, The North, and the South of London where I call home.

I

am writing this looking out to our small but lovely London garden as the blossom falls from the trees. Our tiny piece of space may be the size of a postage stamp, as my husband fondly refers to it, but it’s our tranquil piece of paradise within the busy concrete jungle that is London. Living in South East London is different to the leafy suburbs and the vast open acres of land stretching across the glorious Home Counties. South East London is a busy pocket of London packed full to the brim of Victorian

90

town houses, Georgian terraced houses, high rise purpose built flats, dotted with picturesque parks and narrow tree-lined streets. There are super restaurants, old pubs with gorgeous beers gardens, independent shops and little farmers markets all within a vibrant community of diverse cultures. Here are some of my favourite parts of South East London for eating, drinking and getting out in London’s green spaces.

Ibiza Boat Rental The Startup Yacht Charter company that’s changing the stereotype that charters are only for the super-rich.

I

biza Boat Rental offer charter experiences that have been hand-crafted by seasoned sea veterans to incorporate the most value possible. Starting with tailored boats for every occasion and 3 adventurous and luxurious recommended routes for the whole-day experience to choose from; topped off with exquisite extras that are included in one low fixed price. This includes alcoholic beverages, VAT (which is rarely included in charters - believe it or not) and Fuel (saving you from the usual Ibiza Charter headache caused by hidden charges) - not to mention the fresh towels, snacks and stand up paddle boards. Coming soon we also have three unique charter experiences with all the value of our current charter offering, but with added extras, including bottles of cava, complimentary ice creams from a local creamery and guest list at a selection of clubs to carry on the day’s festivities late into the evening. So keep an eye out, as we are launching summer 2017.

When your whole day is tailored to you, Ibiza Boat Rental is the only charter provider where all you need to do is turn up. We provide the experience, it’s up to you to make the memories. About us and our offering:Ibiza Boat Rental is a yacht and boat charter

company based in Ibiza Town. We have been chartering boats in Ibiza for the last 3 season and enjoying time on boats (fortunately) for the last 10 years. Over this time we have built up a portfolio of boats that we would want to spend time on ourselves with friends and family and made them accessible to others wanting to taste of the Ibiza lifestyle at its finest. All our charters are jam packed with value, maximizing the enjoyment delivered to each and every passenger who steps on board. With 8 hours as standard and complimentary drinks and snacks with every charter, we take care of the niggly bits to remove any potential hassle on the day.

Our team strive to provide the best person to person service possible, helping the client from the early booking stages all the way through to introducing them to their crew for the day, before waving them of on their adventure. We provide predetermined routes around Ibiza and our sister island of Formentera, with 3 stops on each journey, each offering some of the most breath taking scenery imaginable. We want to remove the stereotype that charters are for only the super wealthy, as this is simply not the case. We offer high quality boats ranging from 37 feet upwards, from only 120 euros per person. Bundling

together all the costs into one manageable payment. Including VAT, Crew, on board catering, alcoholic beverages and a selection of destinations. An unforgettable experience that cannot be missed. What to expect from a day with Ibiza boat rental:Once you and your fellow passengers have selected the perfect yacht or boat, having been guided through the available day charter options and routes. Your dedicated representative will take you through the final details, like the meeting point prior to departure and on board catering options, or if preferred a prioritised table reservation at one of Ibiza or Formentera’s top restaurants. Then all that’s left to do is plan which swimwear you will wear on the big day.

When the day arrives, your representative will be waiting to greet you and your party at the time of your choosing, at the predetermined meeting point. Once the awkward Spanish (double kiss) meet and greets done, you are walked to the boat to be introduced to El Capitan, and take your first look at your vessel for the day. Right after boarding, your representative will wave you off but not before taking a group photo prior to departure! Time to hit the waves, take in your first breath of sea air and of course dive into your complimentary drinks selection (which includes Cava, beer and vino).

You will shortly be arriving at the first of three destinations on the route of your choosing, to soak up some sun, get out the paddle board, listen to your customised charter playlist, and really get the party started. When ready, you and your fellow ship mates set off to location two, usually where you jump ship and head to the restaurant for some top class food on your reserved table. Or, sit back and enjoy your on board catering, be that one of our custom hampers, Sushi or the classic sandwiches and crisps.

"Our team strive to provide the best person to person service possible, helping the client from the early booking stages all the way through to introducing them to their crew for the day."

With satisfied belly’s all round and ready to move on, it’s time for location three. Again depending on your choice of route, this will either be exploring the caves of the beautiful Cala Saona or drinking in the atmosphere with a front row seat at Salinas Beach. At this point your skipper must break the news that it’s time to head back to base. But don’t worry, as your amazing memories will last a life time and let’s face it, you’re going back to Ibiza for more fun in the sun. And don’t forget, this summer if you’ve booked one of our packages, you can take advantage of our complimentary ice cream vouchers at a legendary local creamery, before getting ready for the night ahead with guest list access to one of Ibiza’s super clubs.

Ibiza

T

he words 'low-key' and 'relaxing' are certainly not ones you associate with Ibiza. lections and referendums may come and go, but in the stakes for the best party night out in Brighton, there’s no doubt where the popular vote goes. WHO RUNS THE WORLD! is not a political question – it’s a positive celebration of the fair sex performed by 16 of Thailand’s most alluring and stunning Lady Boys at the unique and specially created Sabai Pavilion, centrally situated in Victoria Gardens. Running from Friday 5th May to Saturday 3rd June '17, the show comes with a promise that the audience can escape the drab grey hues of everyday life and luxuriate in a colourful euphoric bubble of laughter, beauty, glitz and music.

The Lady Boys of Bangkok is a cabaret like no other cabaret performed by gorgeous showgirls like no other showgirls - they are all MALE Thai nationals... apart from Trevor. He comes from Oldham and is known to audiences up and down the country as – “the little guy.”

Hailed as 'An irresistible, irrepressible evening that guarantees a great night out!' by The British Theatre Guide, the entertainment never lets up as the attractive seductiveness of Hollywood and the stylish glitz of Las Vegas meet the great traditions of classic British music hall. With more songs and big-scale musical production numbers than you could pout a painted lip at, the Lady Boys pay tribute to a host of stars ranging from Beyonce, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Boy George, Pitbull, Tom Jones, Queen Latifah – the list goes on and on.

Tickets start at £19.50 for adults or £15 for students, with premium and platinum upgrades available. You can purchase meals when booking tickets and if you're organising an office night out or a Maid of Honour sorting out the Bride's send off be sure to have a look at the discounts and offers available for groups and Hen Parties.

The Sabai Pavilion provides a spacious yet intimate cabaret venue like no other. Step into the foyer and you step into a tiny part of Bangkok, the air is charged with the excitement of anticipation and filled with the aromas of freshly prepared Thai cuisine. There are also two well stocked bars to keep the party going.

'Gandey World Class Productions' are the ones to thank for bringing this riot of glitz and glamour to Brighton year after year. For more than 40 years they have staged

ABSOLUTE

some of the World’s most famous shows and memorable productions in cities across the world. The impressive portfolio also includes The Chinese State Circus, Cirque Surreal, Spirit of the Horse and Fist of the Dragon. Not only are 'Gandey World Class Productions' synonymous with producing exquisite shows, they can also be proud of their charitable credentials. Last year the Lady Boys tour raised over £18,000.00 from audience collections for their chosen charity “Pattaya Street Kids Support Project” which helps slum children in Pattaya with support and education.

So what are you waiting for? Book now for a night you’ll never forget with the Lady Boys of Bangkok as they flirt, tease and tempt. Laugh, enjoy and sing your heart out like you are at a party with hundreds of friends you’ve yet to meet. It's deliciously naughty, risqué but never risky and a show that you hope won’t reach an end. No one leaves without a smile on their face and a song in their heart. With special opening night discounts, 241 nights, there is no excuse to miss out on the party!

MU SIC

MOK Arguably one of the most exciting new acts to emerge from the Brighton scene.

A

lternate Urban Pop collective MOK, are a group of musicians and producers from Brighton. Dark, bass heavy electronic beats peppered with short sharp and shocking rap verses have drawn comparisons from South Africas Die Antwood, the UK’s Young Fathers, Prodigy and Professor Green. However it is the powerful and hook riddled pop vocals and infamously explosive live shows that has put them firmly in a league of their own.

Their raw and brutally honest approach to making music has seen them garner early support from BBC Introducing, BBC Radio 1 Xtra, Amazing radio, Juice FM and more in only a short time together. The unforgettable energy and unrelenting force of their live shows has seen them regularly entertain at festivals around the country such as BlissďŹ elds, Shakedown, Brownstock, Forgotten Fields, The Great Escape and more.

Absolute checked the band at the Alternative Escape and watched them conspicuously deliver one of the finest electrifying sets. Dexterous, and with frantic interchanging of emotions, the band grind, twist and challenge genres over thundering beats. MOK's Jack Hannan on drums delivers a tribal groove with thunderous hits worthy of a John Bonham tribute gig. A band can only be as good as the sticksman, and the band have the finest. On mic one, a truly subversive rap force spits out in disicplined fashion by one Lee Jones. Sharp lines and observations are set off against the sublime vocals of Gracey Croucher on mic two. She soars over the band dynamics with her unique pitch perfect, cool tones.

120

On recordings, the bass of James Penhallow shakes the the foundations with warm sines. Live, he throbs his bass bin into submission. Dex Barrow's guitar lines underpin the pads and snakely distorted synth layers courtesy of Joe Bailey. The art of their production sound makes a combustion of lyrical grime, sizzling synth layers and fierce vocals that all together penetrate deep. This is perfectly captured in their videos created by Bezann Productions.

Just like the stamp that Beastie Boys, Rage Against The Machine, Chemical Brothers and Chase & Status made on their generation, MOK is bang on the path to hit the big league. Absolute's Kasia caught up with the band to dig a little deeper... Q When did MOK form? How did it come together? The current line up of MOK formed in 2013, but we've all been making music individually and as friends together throughout our whole lives. Q What are your general musical inspirations? General Music inspirations come from the music we grew up on and what our parents listened to, same as most people. But what really gets us motivated and inspires us to make music is finding brand new sounds from all over the world that are original and pushing boundaries.

ABSOLUTE

Q You have both a live show and a sophisticated studio sound. How do they meet? Do you work off midi signals and augument the live instrumentation? We find it comes together very smoothly actually. The beat is usually made first with full instrumentation and then its decided between us whats kept in and kept out in the live show. It always manages to sound very natural and organic even with the use of samples and backing tracks. Its all about getting the balance right.

Q Gracey, your sublime vocals have a unique sound. Who do you admire? Thank you! I admire lots of different people for their style and the way they interact with music and life, I get inspired all the time but I enjoy trying to keep my sound to what comes out naturally to me. Q What are the plans for the next year? We took the beginning of this year off to focus on recording and writing new music for a new set. Once we've got the finishing touches we look to book out the shows for the rest of the year. As our live show is a massive part of what we do we want to make sure its completely ready. We've just had our first gig of the year last night at the Alt:Escape/TGE and we're looking forward to the next one already.
