A Message from the President
Although we are closing a building at A-B Tech Enka in September, its vibrant CenterCommercializationTechnology(TCC)will remain open for the foreseeable future. A vital part of economic development in Western North Carolina, the TCC houses our Small Business Center and Business Incubation Program, 20 business incubation tenants, the NC Biotech Center and our Craft Beverage Institute of the Southeast® In late fall, we also will dedicate three new structures on our Asheville campus: the Ferguson Center for Allied Health and Workforce Development, an 800-seat event center and auditorium, and a 650-space parking garage. These buildings will allow us to offer more programming for students and provide the public with a beautiful new space for meetings and events. We are indebted to Buncombe County voters for approving a ¼-cent sales tax for these construction projects and other facility improvements at A-B Tech. This issue of the A-B Tech Education Journal is dedicated to helping you register for academic, workforce or enrichment classes. The College offers more than 120 degrees, diplomas and certificates and thousands of workforce and personal enrichment courses to approximately 25,000 students each year. There is something for everyone of any age, whether you are a student who wants to save 75 percent on the first two years of a four-year college degree or an older adult looking for a new career or new skills. We encourage you to explore A-B Tech and join us this year! President New Programs for Fall 2015

The Economic and Workforce Development (EWD) Department at A-B Tech successfully secured nearly 5000 square feet on the Asheville campus to house equipment and provide training space. In November 2014, a year after GE Aviation’s announcement, the EWD Department at A-B Tech opened the “Composites Training Center of Excellence,” the only facility of its kind in Western North Carolina. In addition to the possibility of working for GE Aviation, students completing the Composites Certification can find jobs in automotive, aviation, marine, technology, and entrepreneurial enterprises close to Asheville, and stretching to areas in Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia. “The success of this program, which the award recognizes, is the work of Shelley White, our Vice President for Economic and Workforce Development/Continuing Education, as well as Kevin Kimrey and Andy McNeal of her team. I am very proud of what we have accomplished here and of the people who made it happen,” said A-B Tech President Dennis King.
GE Aviation announced that it expects this new technology, lighter and more durable than metal components, to revolutionize the airline industry.
A-B Tech Community College received the Workforce Development Award from the Community Colleges of Appalachia for the college’s collaboration and service to GE Aviation through the customized training program.
A-B Tech currently trains GE employees to build aviation parts made of an innovative, proprietary ceramic matrix composite material.
When GE Aviation announced an expansion of its existing manufacturing production in Asheville in November 2013, A-B Tech committed to designing and developing a training program that would serve GE Aviation’s needs and requirements. This was made possible with support and funding from the North Carolina Community College System, the state’s NCWorks Customized Training Program, and the Golden LEAF Foundation. The expansion provides a $175 million capital investment to the local tax base, retains 300 jobs, and creates 60 new jobs.
A-B Tech and GE Aviation Program Wins Workforce Development Award
Accepting the Workforce Development Award from the Community Colleges of Appalachia are David Rogers, Coordinator, Advanced Manufacturing, A-B Tech; Betty Silver, Regional Director, NCCCS Economic Development; Micki Turner, HR Manager – Asheville, GE Aviation; Kevin Kimrey, Director, Economic & Workforce Development; Shelley White, VP, Economic and Workforce Development/Continuing Education and Michael Meguiar, Plant Leader – Asheville, GE Aviation.

You’ll be notified through your Student Email account when your award is processed. For additional details, visit abtech.edu/financial-aid
– Payment Deadlines – Payment deadlines occur before the start of each semester and are posted on the College Calendar at abtech.edu/event-calendar. All-Female Culinary Team Reaching for the Top Spot

A-B Tech’s renowned Culinary program made history this year with its first all-female student culinary team and its ninth appearance in the American Culinary Federation (ACF) National Hot Food Team Competition - more than any other culinary school in the contest’s history. “ The underpinnings of a winning team are positive attitudes, respect for each other and willingness to do what it takes. This team has all of those qualities and then some.” said Chef Sheila Tillman, Associate Dean of Hospitality Education.
The team competed in national finals on August 1 in Orlando, which was after our press deadline. Results will be reported in our Fall issue.
“To my knowledge, this is the first all-female team representing the Southeast Region at the National ACF competition,” said Chef Sheila Tillman, Associate Dean of Hospitality Education. “Most certainly this is a first for A-B However,Tech.therearemoreandmorewomenenteringthe culinary field, opening the door for more females participateto Thearecompetitiononteams.Womenwonderfulcooks,buttheyhavebeentheminorityontheprofessionallevel.Iseethemsettingthestageforlittlegirlsinkindergartentodaywhowanttobeexecutivechefstomorrow.”A-BTechStudentHotFoodteamcreatedamenuthathelped them win first place in the 2015 Atlanta,CompetitionCulinaryAmericanFederation’s(ACF)SoutheastRegionalinwhichpropelledthemtothenationalcompetition to be held in Orlando in late July.
