RUN FOR TERRY Page 20

the terry fox run celebrates its 16th anniversary in the capital

CONTENTS

VOLUME 26 | February 1 - 15 | 2011

FROM THE EDITOR Hello Abu Dhabi, Our capital has just played host to the World Future Energy Summit which brought together leaders, policy makers, experts and academia to discuss sustainable solutions for today’s energy challenges. And so with this in mind, and the climate the way it is, I thought it appropriate to speak about what we can do to serve energy at micro level. As I write this the temperatures in the capital are cold and nippy and yet many of us keep the ACs on at full blast. This is definitely our collective opportunity to conserve energy by turning off our ACs wherever possible. Actually a lot of energy waste takes place at institutional level: in offices, shopping centres and hotels, just because staff are just too slow to adjust thermostats. Indeed many tower blocks about town are lit all night, even though they are empty. Do they have to stay on at night? Could they perhaps be dimmed a little bit? But the public has equal responsibility to embrace conservation efforts. While the Municipality has placed recycling receptacles around town (especially along the Corniche) most of us are not responding well. I looked into some of the recycling bins on the Corniche and was disappointed to see that much of the refuse was mixed, not separated according to the colour coded labels. And yet conservation only works when all of us contribute individually. Do your bit, folks, and lets save our world.

Sunset scavenger hunt Text and Photo by Angeli Castillo

[This image is from my album called ‘Mina Mishaps’] One of the best places to meet up, for anything... from a heart to heart conversation to a badminton game... is the Mina Freeport. This area is not only a place for families during the weekend, or a safe haven during last years National Day traffic terror, also definitely a place that is untouched by the absurd amount of “remodeling” that’s happening to the city. This image was taken during one of my many visits to Mina, while my best friend and I were enjoying a hearty take away. While we were enjoying yummy food, I found some gulls feasting as well and decided to capture the moment we all shared. This is one place where anyone can simply enjoy a take away meal or bring a well known cup of “Chai Karak” and sit in solace, enjoy the sunrise, sunset, or night time without any of the headaches of searching for parking. Just be sure that for as long as you go there you don’t take photos of the restricted areas, or enter them for that matter. My only advice to you is to - as cliche as it does sound - is to enjoy every little simple thing in life and don’t take these moments for granted...whether it is the perfect clear blue skies to the simplest sunsets or seeing birds enjoying their afternoon delight or perhaps even an enjoyable cup of chai karak.

Ophi What???!!! YOUR BRAND New Zodiac... or IS IT? Apparently lots of people are heavily invested in the signs of the zodiac. After a group of astronomers announced that, because of a slight wobble in the Earth’s rotation, astrological signs may be in need of a revision, dismayed horoscope readers took to the Internet to sort out the whole cosmic mess.

The

The recent media hype about Ophiuchus (pronounced Oh-fee-YOU-cuss), “the new 13th zodiac sign,” has sent folks spinning into an astrological identity crisis- I went to bed as a Sagittarius and woke up as a Capricorn?.. WHAT?!! It can’t be!

The Zodiac as some astrologers believe it should be:

Who knew this would cause such mayhem. But then horror of horrors - you may have been reading the wrong monthly horoscope your whole life or you could have never met your match because you were looking for the wrong compatible sign!! Oh Lol! The fact that you are not the sign you thought you were may be scary but something even more horrifying is that you may actually be the new sign - Ophiuchus. It falls from November 29 – December 17th. New members are not happy to join the new sign club. (I know, I’ve asked around). Fear not, the new sign is not that scary after all. Ophiuchus is the only zodiac sign linked to a real man – not a crab or ram like some people. The man behind the sign was said to have lived in ancient Egypt around the 27th century BCE, his name was Imhotep. Don’t know who he is? Watch “The Mummy”!! One of Imhotep’s abilities was healing and it is said that he was the one who first introduced it to the world. The serpent or snake symbol which is still used today to symbolize the medical profession was also used to represent Imhotep.

Capricorn: Jan 20 – Feb 16 Aquarius: Feb 16 – March 11 Pisces: March 11 – April 18 Aries: April 18 – May 13 Taurus: May 13 – June 21 Gemini: June 21 – July 20 Cancer: July 20 – Aug 10 Leo: Aug 10 – Sept 16 Virgo: Sept 16 – Oct 30 Libra: Oct 30 – Nov 23 Scorpio: Nov 23 – Nov 29 Ophiuchus: Nov 29 – Dec 17 Sagittarius: Dec 17 – Jan 20.

The good news (or bad news, depending on which side of the argument you are on) is that expert astrologers debunk the latest astrological rumor.. and claim that Ophiuchus is just a constellation. Astrology is based on the four seasons, not on constellations -- and the seasons don’t change. Still confused? Well it only affects those born after 2009… or so they say.

Valentine’s day: Overrated? Name: Zahra Abdalla Age: 15 Nationality:Emirati Valentine’s is kind of overrated..yes! But it is nice to see my Dad giving my Mum a red rose on that special day!

Plans this Valentines: Well no plans yet, I’ll probably log on to Facebook and text “Happy Valentine’s” to my friends.

I feel Valentine day is overrated. It is not because Name: Juliet Miranda I don’t believe in love and not because I don’t have Age: 40 someone to spend it with. In fact I am quite in love Nationality: Indian and have been married since 23 years and before we married we were in courtship for almost eight years. I feel like there are 364 other days in the year to express your love, so why is this day so special? It is just the card and candy companies attempting to turn a profit from overpriced novelties. You get a card and chocolate for your boyfriend on Valentine’s Day whoopie, why not just to surprise him and say you love him. Like why are so many people obsessed with the outcome of one day. Oh my God he is gonna tell you he likes you on Valentines! Or, What should I get my boyfriend/girlfriend on Valentines? And no offense to anyone who has gotten married or proposed on Valentines, but how is it romantic when you know a thousand other people are doing it on that day too? Why should this one day be an expression of love? Shouldn’t you sow your love everyday?

Plans this Valentines: Family people can make Valentine’s Day a very memorable event of the year. It’s a special day where all the family members can express their love of each other during dinner and remember that preparation can be very much fun too. As parents, you’ll feel the satisfaction knowing that you made, some good food together with your kids. You can also allow each person of the family to make a dish for Valentine’s dinner. Make it a point that it should be a surprise for the rest of the family. Even if you don’t suggest it, most of the time, you’ll definitely be surprised by what the kids can create on their own. I know kids will really need your help during shopping and cooking the food. You can still help them, of course, but remember to act surprised after the Valentine’s food had been made. Now, that’s one fun way to celebrate... Preparing Valentine’s food with the whole family offers the opportunity for you to express your love to your kids. With the busy schedules most of us live in, it’s one day you can keep the love growing in your family. Besides, Valentine’s Day is about love anyway, and comes only once a year as a rare treat for you to show your affection.

Name: Arif Abdullah Age: 35 Nationality: Yemen Valentine’s day overrated? Maybe. Love shouldn’t just be expressed on that date alone but should be every single day, all throughout the year. Plans this Valentines: I’ll be going out with my sweetheart... like I usually do on normal days. 6

vox pop Name: Tony Eneojo Aduku Age: 36 Nationality: Nigerian I dont think Valentine’s overrated at all. I think is a wake up call day to humanity that love should be part of our daily lives. This world would be a better place if each and every one of us would extend a hand of LOVE everyday to our neighbor. Love is the greatest of all! Plans this Valentines: As usual,a just like any other “special” occasion, I would take my lovely wife out and just enjoy the moment.

Name: Caroline Dodds Age: 41 Nationality: Scottish Yes I do think Valentine’s huuuuugely overrated. Hotels and restaurants jump on it making Valentine’s an excuse to raise their prices. Taking advantage of the event. Plans this Valentines: I don’t plan for Valentine’s. I am hoping to be surprised. Just wait and see what’s gonna happen. Like they say, “the best things come to those who wait.”

It depends. For some people Valentine’s is overrated, for some others not at all. I don’t see it as an “over-rated” thing, perhaps cause most of the people don’t care about it, but I see some people rush into a relationship one day before Valentine’s Day. Technically it relies upon the person and their very culture. There are people who think they’ll only become someone of importance once married or at least in a relationship, and I guess they are wrong. Love isn’t something we should be rushing into just for Valentine’s. It is something we should take our time for and feel deeply. Loving is more than just buying presents, it is more about being there with that person you love, and caring about the ones we love. If you ask me why is love undoubtedly over-rated, then I would tell you that it is because finding love, real and disinterested, is just like searching for a little grain of sand in the middle of a desert: even if there are very many kinds, only one will be the real one for you. It is hard, but when you really find it, you wish to never let it go. I do hope Valentine’s would prove meaningful to my life one day, and to those ignorant about it… and when such a day comes, I’ll swallow up my words about it being over-rated :)

Name: Diego Rafael Braga Age: 23 Nationality: Brazillian

Plans this Valentine’s: I still don’t know. In my hometown, Valentine’s Day is on June 12th. Too much water will run by the stream of my life until there. 7

Valentine’s to do list

February 14, Valentine’s day… another day to groan about your loveless life , or for some, a day to paint the town with mush-mush and romance. While it may not be prudent to flaunt your affection in public, Tempo suggests some hushhush last minute ideas for anyone planning to celebrate Valentine’s. akfast in bed.. 1. Do the cliché, bre es…make sure ros with a bouquet of bread and you don’t burn the . fee cof / tea overdo the

2. Give a gift certificate for any of the following: professional massage, day at a spa, haircut? ma nic pedicure, facial from a loca ure, l spa or nail salon .

3. Spend a couple hours together writing romantic ideas on separate slips of paper. After you get a total of 100 romantic ideas on 100 pieces of paper, then fill a jar with them . Every Friday, from this day on , alternate who picks one and has to implement it by the following Friday vice versa.

5. There aren’t many times in life when you can devour heart shaped cakes.. Go make one.. Or bet your life, every bakery would be selling one.

9. Walk at the Corniche for a midnight stroll . Slowly get that surprise gift out of your pocket and profess undying love under the moon .

16. Don’t forget to look your best on that particular day. Dare not say “You look FAT in that..” unless you mean Fantastic and Terrific.. then go ahead! *wink*

11. If you decide to celebrate at home cook something special at home. Your efforts won’t go unappreciated. Add an expensive bubbly to the menu. 13. Write love notes and hide them all over the house. You will surely make that special someone go crazy on a romantic hunt all around the house. Don’t act lovey-dovey before she/he discovers it. Let her/him take the initiative.

15. Or just…spend the day just photographing each other... outdoors (at the park, Corniche, mall ..Duh!) as well as indoors. Oh and make sure you get someone to take photos of the two of you together. Candids are fun ..frame one! 17. If you’re dead cheap (and don’t worry, we’re not going to identify you) experience fine dining at the parking lot having shawarma! Choices are wide open .. Lebanese Flower, Marroush….

18. Paintball . Seriously? Yes seriously. At the Jazira Beach Club in Ghantoot or Armed Forces Officers’ Club. Most guys like active things. A girl with a weapon is hot. Playing a game of paintball or air soft might be totally out of your comfort zone but it may be awesome. Give it a try! Extra points if you wear black jeans, and black top. Paintball is messy to try not to wear anything too good or that you will feel badly about if it gets ruined. 8

The thing you most love about living in the UAE? Definitely, the people and the places.

The UAE gives you the freedom to practice what you want which something many other countries don’t. Its also much more commercial comparatively.

The thing you most hate about living in the UAE? It can be unpleasantly hot most of the year.

UAE doesn’t have much of a social night life.

What inspires you most in Abu Dhabi? Its really easy to meet people and have fun and to make it big in any field you like. If you like what you do and work hard for it, there is no limit to where you can go in Abu Dhabi. It’s a first-class city for dreams to come true!

The zest to go on and never give up on anything or opportunities presented to you in life.

If there was something you could improve about this place, what would it be? The weather. More entertainment options.

Erase the number of bans implemented on so many internet networks.

What do you think is the easiest way to get along with other cultures of Abu Dhabi? Just be yourself. I have tons of friends here from so many nationalities. Everyone is so friendly and nice.

One just has to make an effort if he/she wants to and people here are really friendly to accept all cultures and religious sentiments.

Describe a “fun” day for you in Abu Dhabi? Friday morning. Going by boat to any of the islands. Jet skiing. Then having lunch at the Shangrila with my friends. Crusing around with the top off in winter. Walking on the Corniche and biking. Ice skating. Going to mid-night movies. Shawarma. Volunteering.

A barbeque down at the park, with family and friends.

What is your “Abu Dhabi” dream? Anything is possible in Abu Dhabi, the sky’s the limit. I started MC-ing two years ago and now I’m doing it for big events like WOMAD, AUTO festivals and FIFA Club World Cup. I never expected to get that recognition but here everyone is so supportive and are willing to teach you and help you get better. 18

Haven’t thought of it yet... but I know it’s bound to be big!

CITYBITES

Goto King The Scene: Goto King in the Philippines first started out as a kiosk cart until it became a booming full course menu restaurant. The franchise here in Abu Dhabi opened back in 2009, catering to the taste of the Filipinos and non-Filipino’s as well. This resto serves a halal menu, so it’s no surprise that Goto King offers tokwa’t baka (Beef Tofu) and tokwa’t squidballs (Squid Tofu) as alternatives to pork. Upon entering, a huge aquarium (full of Dori’s *finding nemo*) greets you, as does a karaoke/ acoustic session bar on the left...(oh for Filipino pride!) and a huge self-service salad bar on the right. The place is spacious, you can actually reserve the middle aisle for a table of 15. Service is prompt, but the waiters recommend a lot…so you could end up ordering tons of food, which can be doggy-bagged (and might lie in your fridge for days).

What we’ve tried: The appetizer was fab! A selection of fried tofu and chicken fingers, calamaris, steamed wantons...YUM! The special Goto (rice porridge with ox tail and egg) and Arroz Caldo (rice porridge with chicken and egg) is great for lunch or dinner. The sizzling sisig is gooooodd! Although it can’t be compared to the original sisig they make in the Philippines, it’s still a winner! What is Sisig, you ask? Here sisig is either chicken, beef or seafood chopped and marinated in lemon juice or vinegar, broiled and fried and seasoned with salt, pepper and other spices, and topped with a half cooked bull’s-eye egg. Mix it all together while it still sizzles...and serve it with rice! Sinigang na Isda (fish in sour soup) was made to its best. Have it as a starter or to wash down the food. Overall the food was satisfactory and it’s nice to sit back and watch *Pinoy energy on TV*.

TERRY FOX Run 2011 Run, walk, skate or shuffle...all to celebrate, honour and remember loved ones.

This 18th of February we celebrate a fun event and one that is highly worthy of our support: it’s the Terry Fox Run, which benefits cancer research in the UAE. And this year it is the capital’s 16th anniversary of Terry Fox Run. The annual Terry Fox Runs aims to involve the whole community, teach school kids about social responsibility, raise awareness about cancer and strive towards the pursuit of a cure for the disease. All this is done through the money we contribute and our participation in the event. Apart from all that, the Terry Fox Run has become an extremely popular community event that brings us all together.

“This year’s event promises to be the most successful. We are aiming to collecting one million dirhams to fund innovative cancer research in the UAE. Our patron, HE Sheikh Sultan bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Advisor to HH the President, and the Canadian Ambassador have both confirmed their attendance. We really hope to see members of the community... everyone, young and old, at the run on Friday!” Nafisa Taha , Chairperson, Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run, 2011.

Last year, Dh 650,000 was raised from the Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run, and once again this year every single dirham of is going to help finance world-class research projects. The third payment of Dh300,000 raised will be presented in a ceremony prior to the run, to the three cancer research

The organisers remind us that the Terry Fox Run is not a race, so while you can be competitive if you want to be, in fact every participant is a winner. You can run, jog or just stroll along with friends. It’s the participation that matters. So let’s all honour Terry’s memory, and help raise awareness too!

entrepreneur: Journey toys Want to give your children or friends a toy that is entertaining as well as educational? “Journey toys” is a great home-grown project that is a one-stop online shop that offers educational toys for kids aged 18 months up to the early tweens. Tempo had a chat with owner, Alicia Tung Suwaina, as she prepared to leave for the Toy Fair in New York. is that toys are tools, an investment that involves and empowers. They promote creativity and uniqueness and are child directed. Mass market toy stores sell more for less, and they constantly feature that emphasize quantity. These shops target families and children so the toys are ad-driven. They see toys as possession; consumables to entertain and distract, and they promotes imitation and conformity. Tempo: Where do you source your toys from?

Tempo: Introduce Journey Toys. Alicia Tung Suwaina: Journey Toys is an educational specialty toy company. We believe that toys educate, offer open ended, child guided play, have terrific value for purchase, and offer children hours of plain fun. I came up with this idea because I had been buying toys abroad for years. One day I thought, why not bring the toys to UAE for everyone to have access to, and so Journey Toys was born. Tempo: Where does your interest in toys come from? Alicia Tung Suwaina: I am an educator, I have a M.Ed in curriculum design. I used a lot of math and lanugage games when teaching and had to source toy solutions from overseas every year. Personally, I have always enjoyed playing board games and enjoy playing them with my children or my former students. The company name came from Education is a Journey of Learning Through Play. Tempo: Who is the market you cater to?

Alicia Tung Suwaina: All of my toys are imported from the US. I know they meet safety standards. I am beginning to look at the European market too. I also source toys from companies that are environmentally and socially aware. I research vendors to find out the story behind the development of the toy too. Tempo: Why is Journey toys going to the New York Toy Fair? Alicia Tung Suwaina: For the company the big event is the Toy Fair in New York City. The Toy Fair is huge, exciting and exhausting event. It is where the toy industry meets to talk safety legislation, trends, marketing and where the toy of the year and other awards are given. There are 1200 vendors and over 100,000 toys exhibited. It is four days filled with vendor meetings, attending toy industry sponsored events, meeting other toy store owners, networking, learning industry gossip, and just wandering around and checking out new lines. I don’t stop for lunch, I just pick up a fitness bar along the way. It’s so much fun...I absolutely love attending toy fair. I feel like a kid in a candy store.

Alicia Tung Suwaina: All nationalities, all backgrounds, all kids. Tempo: How successful have you been selling online? Alicia Tung Suwaina: Selling on the internet has been very difficult. I saw some research once that said only 3% of the population in UAE buy from the internet. I think with time and brand exposure that will change. Tempo: What makes a specialty store such as yours special? Alicia Tung Suwaina: My specialty store serves families, children and the individual needs of the customer. I emphasize quality not quantity. Journey Toys’ philosophy 22

THE TEMPO GUIDE ON HOW TO SPOT A LIAR

Do you know when someone is lying to you? There’s apparently a bit of science to it. Here Tempo offers some cool ways to spot if somebody is lying. Word of caution: don’t go overboard with it otherwise you will feel paranoid that nobody is saying the truth anymore. But it may be useful to notice these little tell tell signs. The clues are natural body movements and ways of speech. But you need to use good judgement as many people use these in their daily life even when they are not really lying. The other thing is that gestures also tend to be culture specific, so watch out for that too. One last thing to keep in mind is that the eleven signs below should not be interpreted as lying if they’re used individually. Look for a combination of these. And if you yourself are a bad liar yourself, use these tips to hone your skills... (hey, we’re not encouraging you to lie). So here are the eleven tell-tale signs that someone could be fibbing: 1. A common indication is that liars will touch the area around their lower face, i.e. scratching the nose, touching the lips or chin. This is similar to a child covering his own mouth after a lie. But this also happens when a person becomes self-conscious.

6. Liars will play with objects in their possession such as a handbag, bracelet, mobile phone or hair.

2. They will tend to avoid eye contact. However good liars will look at your eyes when they realize their eyes are giving them away.

8. Adding unnecessary detail to a normal conversation is another sign of lying. Some people just talk a lot though.

3. A natural smile can spreads all over the face. When it is a fake smile, it is limited to the mouth. Something like when an air-hostess welcomes you on-board. 4. Guilty people usually get defensive at the first indication of an accusation whereas honest people will get offensive. 5. Liars do not like to show their palms. Showing your palms while talking is a sign of openness.

7. Normal a person who lies uses your own words to reply to you.

9. Sometime liars use words that don’t make sense. Using incorrect grammar is also a part of this. 10. To give them time to think about lying, liars sometimes simply answers instead of denying something directly. 11. A liar will often change the subject; a liar will be comfortable with the change with the belief that his lies have been believed.

YOUR BIGGEST LIE?

We asked our readers about lying, and here’s what they said... To take an off from work... Diety- I faked food poisoning to my boss once, and it worked like a charm! The real fact... I was sloshed! Not to meet someone... Raffy- I didn’t want to meet a client, and I lied, that my wife was sick and had to be home to take care of her. The real fact... I was tired. To not answer the phone... Leila W.- A guy who likes me kept calling incessantly, and I’ve dissed his calls on purpose. I returned his call, pretending I was about to head into a meeting and lied that my day was booked with meetings, my phone was on silent and hung up! The real fact... I was avoiding him, and I was heading to the mall! For being late... Naseer - My boss calls up to find out why I was late to work, and I told him that I was in the bank paying my bills, and the queue was very long. The real fact.. I overslept. Not to come online.. Moore- My fiance was waiting for me online, and I didn’t want to chat with her, so I lied that I was in Dubai, and was about to watch a movie with my friends. The real fact... I was in no mood to argue or talk.

director who hovers over my work all the time. The one time we were doing a project, I compliemented her by saying she was a genius (which was a lie) and did the changes according to her likes. The real fact.. to stop her from nagging! Bailing out on friends... Armind-My friends called up to hang out and I lied saying I got a call from the office that required urgent work. The real fact... I was at home lazying around on Facebook. Forgetting someone’s birthday.. Jaber- One of my friends called to tell me I missed out on her birthday.. I came up with an instant lie convincing her “I didn’t forget your birthday.. Aww well I’d spoil the surprise for you.. we’re having a birthday dinner planned out for you on the weekend..” and she believed me. I quickly called up all my friends to organize a dinner party at Chillis. The real fact... I did forget and the Facebook notification came in late! About my job... Queenie- I lied about my job and told my friends I worked for an Anime company, when actually for a month I read the mangas in Japan that weren’t out here yet in Abu Dhabi, and told them what will happen next on “Bleach” and they believed it! The real fact.. I have a sucky job as an assistant and have alot of time on my hands to be on the internet.

Complimenting someone... Prakash-I’m a designer by profession and I have a senior art 23

Is there a DOC in the house? Aka a doctor from New York speaks on the state of public wellness in Abu Dhabi

FatTalk

Part 1

of- hypertension, diabetes, stroke, heart attack. Now, here’s a few you may not know about- cancers, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, infertility, depression, blood clots. What does this all mean? Obesity or being overweight has a proven negative impact on your life expectancy. Understand?

Ok, heres a big bad nasty joke... “Obesity....... its a big problem around here..... “ Ha ha ha... Not really a joking matter, especially when you are the one who the joke is being directed at. But we all love the fat guy- the life of the party, a born comedian, Homer Simpson, Fat Albert etc, so with all these great qualities, why is it so bad to be fat? Look around you right now and people watch for a moment. I bet you saw someone you considered to be “fat”. If so many people are “fat”, surely it cant be that bad, right? Well as it turns out, your old ma’ was right, when she said, “if everyone jumped off a cliff, would you?” (in reference to something stupid you may have done ) Being overweight or obese is no joke. To go one step further, its life threatening. The medical definition of obesity is a body mass index of greater than 30 or being 20% above your ideal body weight. Bear in mind, many other factors must be taken into account, but this is the basic definition. Don’t bother committing this to memory, so that every time you jump on a scale, you can feel “good” since you don’t meet the definition. You don’t want to meet the definition, nor should you consider that a problem exists only once you reach the definition. The problems don’t just start once you reach the clinical definition of obese, but rather they begin a long time before this point. You have to graduate through overweight to reach obese.

Obesity is one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide. There is a significant and concerning increase in its prevalence amongst adults and in children. Obesity is stigmatized in much of the modern world, although it is perceived as a symbol of wealth and fertility in some parts. How does the UAE stack up in these dubious obesity statistics? Not positively. Approximately 60% are considered overweight while 33% are obese. Now, compare this to the “gold standard”, the good ole USA - 32% of their population suffers from obesity. Suffering with the best. Here is another terrifying statistic which is directly related to obesity. The prevalence of diabetes in the UAE is 19.5%. While we are striving for excellence in the negative health indicies, how about this- the UAE has the 2nd highest rate of diabetes globally , only to be beaten out by the island of Naru (which also tops the obesity ranking). 1 of 3 people in the UAE has hypertension. You seeing a pattern here? Metabolic Syndrome is real, and it surrounds us, everyday. It could be you.....

Whats wrong with being obese? Have you ever tried, or are you in the quest to become obese? Why not? Obesity and being overweight, result in numerous health problems. These medical disorders combined with obesity are labeled Metabolic Syndrome (a medical buzzbrand presently). Side effects of obesity that you may have heard 25

yank in sandland Worldclass golf and world-sized woes

I went to the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship the other day. The weather was appropriate as the cool temperatures, overcast skies and occasional drizzle were reminiscent of the sports birthplace in Scotland. The climate was very unusual for Abu Dhabi as for four days in a row it was cloudy, cool and rainy. In all my time here I don’t recall a series of days it was this way. I have a love/hate relationship with golf. I used to play at least twice a week back in the day. While I enjoyed being in the groomed beauty of the links, I got frustrated by the difficulty of the sport. One millimeter off on a swing and the ball careens into the woods. There is nothing worse to a golfer’s ears than to hear his ball bouncing off of tree trunks that are out of bounds of the fairway.

Golf is unique as your competitor is yourself. You don’t actually play against your partner, you try to best your last score despite who you are playing with. Of course score is kept, but golf has handicaps which means the less skilled are spotted strokes, so in theory everything is supposed to be equal. Unlike football, cricket or baseball, there is no direct interaction between you and your partner. It is you against the course. I actually have not played in several years as I found I could get angry and frustrated without gripping a 5-iron and paying a green’s fee. I have been known to throw a club or two after a bad shot and I discovered that despite the bucolic setting, other golfers tend toward the rude. So I quit playing. Because of this I am saving money and my blood pressure is way down. This doesn’t mean I don’t like golf; it is a game of finesse played in beautiful venues. If I had my choice, I would just take a nice walk along the fairways. There is nothing more peaceful than a golf course at sunset. That being said, the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship pulled off another winner. I enjoyed being there as the location and people were great! A class act and a great spectator experience. There were activities there for all. They put on a good show and I recommend everyone attend future events. I have to admire the guys who play professionally, it sure is a tough way to make a living.
