VOLUME 25 | February 16 - 28 | 2011
FROM THE EDITOR Hello Abu Dhabi,
Technology has been setting the agenda lately....whether it is the sweeping changes in Egypt courtesy Facebook, or the compelling discussions in the Cabsat exhibition this month on how information technology is converging, fragmenting and consolidating to create exciting ways for us to communicate. At our own level this month also saw some interesting debates on mobile tagging, an interesting technology that this magazine embraced with gusto. As our readers know, Tempo introduced mobile tagging to the region through our June 2010 issue. We added Microsoft Tag just two weeks after it left Beta phase. Despite the ‘newness’ of tags (at least in the UAE) we are still committed to carrying them until the market is ready...and that’s because of our commitment to innovation. I was interviewed by The National (thank you Ben Flannagan for a thorough report on tagging) and asked about our experience. In the story (which appeared on February 10) I shared backend data about tagging--the number of scans we are getting and other trends on tags. The bottom line, and here I speak from our experience in Tempo and with other applications as well, is that the UAE - as the country with the highest per capita penetration of mobile phones (and possibly of smart phones as well) --is starting to embrace the technology; slowly but surely, and the numbers are growing issue upon issue... If you are one of our ‘scanners,’ or if tagging interests you, please send me a note on your experience, and why you think this technology works or doesn’t. Kindness, Abu Dhabi, pass it on.

This is in support of the fight against colorectal cancer which claims 655 thousand deaths per year worldwide. It is actually the third most common cancer, and the second leading cause of death from malignant diseases. Most of us know this disease as colon cancer, and we’ve learned that it is the result of uncontrolled growth of cells inside the colon or rectum. Fortunately, it is preventable. In this picture my friends and I also got the note on wearing blue for this cause, and we accepted the challenge. We got together and shot photos of us wearing blue shirts, the colour for the colon cancer campaign. We even got other people wearing blue with us! Those who pursue this technique are trained to wield the sword at the waist (drawing and sheathing it) by imagining an enemy with his sword and attacking him. Beat with: zero limit
Tempo went exploring the local music scene, and came across ZERO LIMIT, a group of talented aspiring musicians from the British School Al Khubairat... TEMPO: What is in the name of the band? Ollie Farrell: The name of our band is “Zero Limit”. It means there are no boundaries as to what can be achieved. TEMPO: Introduce the members behind the band. Ollie Farrell: I play the drums and am the vocalist. I am originally from England before I moved to Abu Dhabi in 1997. I don’t know where to begin to describe my love for rock music. At the tender age of seven, I bought Metallica’s first album- “Kill em’ all” and they were the reason I got inspired to become a musician. I’ve been playing guitar for seven years and drums for five. Matthew Quigley: I’m the lead guitarist. I moved here from Kent, England, and for five years I’ve been playing the guitar after seeing Iron Maiden live in London for the first time. Watching Dave Murray shred “The Trooper” solo, I thought to myself ‘YES this is what I want to do!’ (Although my style varies from classical to death metal). I write music for the band, and I attend concerts to acquire inspiration for it! Philip Buultjens: I’m half Sri Lankan, half Australian and I’m the bassist. The band “Les Claypool” is my source of inspiration to further develop my skills. Tom Rose-Forbes: I’m from Adelaide, Australia and grew up in Spain before moving here to Abu Dhabi. I am the vocalist besides Ollie. I’m more of the aggressive genre rock-metal type. I’ve been inspired by bands such as “Parkway Drive” and “August Burns Red”. Oh, and I hope to make it as a musical journalist someday. TEMPO: When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together? Ollie Farrell: We all met through school, and decided we needed something else to do at weekends. We started just jamming and now are hoping to make something of it. We started the band around a year ago with no real thought, just a few people having fun, then our original bassist had to leave the country so it was just me and Matt. We decided to become more serious with the band. We searched for new members and came across Philip.
TEMPO: Have you performed publicly? Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Ollie Farrell: At the moment we haven’t performed anywhere great, just a few parties and programs but we are finalizing a set list and would love to find a venue to perform at. We do covers of some classic rock, like “Metallica” “Iron maiden” and “Eric Clapton.” We have yet to find our own sound but we currently play what feels good. We came up with a rock remix of “Lady Gaga - Bad Romance,” are always working on our set list, and looking out for inspiration. TEMPO: Could you briefly describe the music-making process? What are your rehearsals like? Matthew Quigley: The way we (Ollie and I) write music is quite slow; we practice on weekends for up to six hours, until the music feels right, we then develop it into a song. Ollie Farrell: Rehearsals are usually quite spontaneous with brief moments of amazing music followed by a fifteen minute break and then hours of more relaxed playing. TEMPO: What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Ollie Farrell: Our biggest challenge has been finding the time to practice and scouting out for new additions to the band. TEMPO: What’s your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune? Ollie Farrell: Our ultimate direction could always change. YES! Fame and fortune is a dream, but in the end it is always about the music. TEMPO: How can we gain access to your music? Ollie Farrell: Our first album is still a work in progress, and so is our website. Hopefully it’ll all get done soon and people can hear our songs online! TEMPO: Good luck guys; you are a great inspiration for all young people. Be sure to let Tempo know about any upcoming gigs.

A SPACE DEDICATED TO AMATEURS, PROFESSIONALS AND “FEELING” PHOTOGRAPHERS
PORTRAITS - BLACK AND WHITE Black and white photography is one of the most interesting and artistic forms in photography. Black and white works very nicely for portrait photography and for high impact image compositions. From a technical point of view skin tones in black and white are mellowed, while blotches, blemishes, and uneven shading become less noticeable. Below is a how-to from the Tempo photography team on how you can take really cool pictures in black and white, and on the facing pace are inspirations from three photographers: Hazza Bani Malek, Muhammad Osman Gul and Marlon Bautista.
1. Shoot in RAW
3. Low ISO
We know many readers can’t shoot in RAW because their camera doesn’t offer it or don’t shoot in RAW because they either don’t know how or don’t like to. Of course shooting in JPEG doesn’t stop you shooting in black and white – but if it’s an option, give RAW a chance and you might be surprised by what it offers you in post production.
Shoot with the lowest ISO possible. When it comes to
2. Shoot in Colour If your camera doesn’t allow you to shoot in RAW (or you choose not to) – shoot in colour and do your conversion to black and white later on your computer. While most digital cameras offer you the option to shoot in black and white (and can produce some reasonable results) you have more control over your end results if you have the colour data to work with in your conversion on your computer Note : There is an exception to shooting in colour and it’s when you’re taking note of point one above (shooting in RAW). When shooting in RAW and switching to black and white mode you see your results on the LCD in black and white but the camera actually records all of the information (including colour) – which is the best of both worlds! But if you’re shooting in JPEG – shoot in colour and do the conversion later.

Title of the picture: Aliens are cool Location: My room, Julphar, RAK Subject: Me Setting: Camera mounted on tripod, set to self-timer with a flash light, Lights off and pose. Purpose of the shot: A friend was trippin on aliens and how they go for the kill. Aliens shouldn’t always be perceived as such, they should be cool. This photo was actually intended for him. Camera model: NIKON D90, using Nikkor 18-105mm lens F-stop/ Aperture: 3.5 at 18mm ISO: 1250 Shutter speed: 1/15th of a sec. Tip: Moderate lighting and seize the pose. Take a couple of shots and who knows one just might be the lucky shot. A flash light is used to create the “vignette” effect and make sure the subject is in focus. Post processing always does the trick. Add filter > grain, and pitch black demon eyes... voila!
Title of the picture: Winter-delight Location: A friend’s villa in Bateen Subject: Victoria Knechova Setting: Roughly around 3 pm - was taken in the garden on 8th January, 2011 Purpose of the shot: A random click, since we were with a group of friends. I felt like experimenting. Camera model: Canon EOS-1000D (mounted on a BGE5 battery grip) using 50mm portrait lens F-Stop: 4.0 ISO: 1600 (since it was dark and was about to rain, so the light was not helping out much) Shutter speed: 1/100th of a sec. Tip: Focus on the subject. A 50mm portrait lens does not have zoom in/ zoom out option, so just focus on the subject, play around by blurring the background. Personally I like it when the background is totally blurred beyond recognition, and believe in having a symmetric approach towards my photography; it reduces/ eliminates the dead-space in the image.
black and white, the higher the ISO, the noise created by this becomes more obvious. If you’re after this “noise” (or grain) you can always add it later in your post production- but it’s harder to go the other way and take the noise out.
4. When to Shoot It is preferable to shoot images for Black and White in low contrast situations. So a dark or cloudy day can be great time to shoot outdoors shots. Ironically these are the days that those who shoot only in color would yank at home about “poor lighting”. So next time you find yourself in a gloomy day- grab the opportunity to take some B&W shots.
5. Composition Most of the general tips on how to compose or frame a good shot apply just as well to black and white photography as they do when shooting in color. However the main obvious difference is that you’re unable to use color to lead the eye into or around your shot. This means you have to train yourself to look at shapes, tones
Marlon Bautista
and textures in your frame as points of interest. Pay
Accountant and a wannabe photographer
particularly attention to shadows and highlights which will become a feature of your shot.
What you need to know.... Aperture: Controls the amount of light to be received through the lens opening. The higher the aperture number smaller the lens opening. ISO: Light Sensitvity control Shutter speed: Time for which the shutter is held open during the taking of a photograph. The longer the shutter speed the more light is recorded. Our next topic is on “coloured” portrait shots. If you’d like to share your photos email them with details to ellaine@abudhabitempo.com

Camera model: Canon 450D using 18 – 135mm lens F-stop / Aperture: 5.6 ISO: 400 Shutter speed: 1/320 sec Tip: On shooting outdoors, it is recommended to use a reflector to even out the sun power reflection against the model’s face. 15 11

Portofino Dining on a cruise ship
The thing you most love about living in the UAE? That it’s a multi-cultural country, and you could make new friends from all over the world easily!
Love the fact that I was born here so it becomes my home by default.
The thing you most hate about living in the UAE? The hot summer mixed with humidity all around!
I can’t be here forever which is unfortunate.
A hearty meal like this wouldn’t miss out on a ‘special beverage’. These were younger vintages compared to ones you might find at a good restaurant. However, the nature of cruising makes this a necessity I suppose. To get around this, Royal Caribbean choose beverages that mature earlier. Finally the raspberry panna cotta was decadent and worth saving room for. Ultimately, what was fun about the event was the chance to meet fellow passengers, the media and VIPs who were enthused about food, and of course the cruise...which Tempo might try in the later future on their next trip down on November this year. Oh what fun to be on a cruise ship!
What is one thing you wish you could change about your life? I love my life so wouldnt want to change it but rather enhance it every passing day.
What inspires you most in Abu Dhabi? That how secure this place is, and how friendly people are here!
Its so moderate , traditional yet modern, we can feel life here.
What is you pet peeve living in this city? How some people violate traffic law and seem happy to get away with it!
I dislike the parking system . We pay for it but never have space to park which translates to ultimate frustration.

What we’ve tried: Well the main menu provides a nice selection of Italian treats… caprese, fried calamari, and carpaccio are among the Il primo selections. For the entrée we had the tomato mozzarella salad, which was bellissimo as it should be. The chicken marsala wasn’t exactly Italian’s comfort food at it’s finest. (It lacked a certain taste). This was when we had asked for Tabasco hot sauce (which we know is an absolute no-no for die hard gourmets) and upon reincorporating it into the sauce along with sauteed mushrooms, garlic, and a sprinkling of seasonings resulted in a more flavorful, savory dish. Really.

The Scene: We were invited to the launch of the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, “Brilliance of the Seas,” where at the end of the tour they served lunch at the Portofino Italian Restaurant. It is a family fine dining with a cosy feel of Italy to it. The huge paintings on the wall made it seem like an “al-fresco” scene, although with comfy armchairs. Since it was docked at the Mina port, the view wasn’t much, except for a set of exported cars lined up, but once on sea, we reckon the ocean view would have been absolutely stunning.

1000 Awesome Things …is just, (well states the obvious) a time-ticking countdown of 1000 awesome things. Launched on June, 2008 and updated every weekday, it is best described as optimism for the rest of us. But this site is sunny without being saccharine, it’s a countdown of life’s little joys that reads like a snappy Jerry Seinfeld monologue. Abu Dhabi Gets served the world’s best food
My Abu Dhabi Americans Tameka Casselle and Lisa Hill said a salad from Chef Darren Andow with beef was good and jello added “an unexpected twist” but they didn’t want their picture taken while they were eating.
Our city and emirate is celebrating Gourmet Abu Dhabi which is a chance for all of us who love to eat to eat better than we usually can manage. With 17 visiting international chefs and many more from local hotels and restaurants, we can taste the best and try foods we might not normally find. When the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority opened Gourmet Abu Dhabi on February 2, the chefs and the foodies came together at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. Here’s who we found. Ali Ebdowa is an Emirati who is the chef at Mezlai, the first Emirati restaurant in Emirates Palace and in Abu Dhabi. He’s busy telling everyone about the cuisine he’s serving, here with Bastain Kuhnt who is new to the UAE and working at the Rocco Forte Hotel, that opens this summer.
Emiratis Dhafer Al Quassemi from RAK and Faisal Al Sheikh who works for Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority said the event was “amazing for visitors and residents.”
Maite Hugel and Neil Thomson, both in the food and beverage business, came from Dubai to see how our emirate does it, and seem to like what they’re tasting - rabbit dumpling, quash puree and hazelnut sorbet.
And at the end I found my friend Shane Dobbin from Impact Porter Novelli and her new friend Tania Taylor who works at the Al Forsan Sports Resort. “I’ve been to many F&B events around the world,” Taylor said, “and this is definitely on a par with the best of them.”
On the cover, a couple and a famous chef from Lebanon. The chef is Danny Kattar. His guests are Lenin Bandras, Ambassador of Venezuela, and wife Magali Herbert, enjoying venison tempura with sweet and sour sauce.
Ready to taste something new is Egyptian Mohammed Mohy, a cameraman for Abu Dhabi TV who’s taking a break from work and waiting for Martin Vanicek from the Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel to serve a crepe. 22

Julia Bruchwitz: Dealing with sizes. Pumping the size to a larger fit, means double the production.
JZ Couture, a fashion house in the UAE, amalgamates soulful Pakistan heritage with true urban Arabian and western influences as part of their design philosophy and ideology. Tempo caught up with the ladies behind this fusion, Julia Bruchwitz and Zara Hassan as they needle us through their work. TEMPO: How did JZ Couture come about? Julia Bruchwitz: I’m from Germany, and had worked in France for Louis Vuitton before setting up the label. Fashion has always been my passion ever since I used to make dresses out of newspapers when I was seven. Zara Hassan: I’m based in Pakistan, and majored in fashion at the Pakistan Fashion Institute. My passion for painting led me to the road of fashion. I take short courses to help me hone my fashion skills. Julia Bruchwitz: We met at the Pakistan Fashion Week and founded the fusion label in early 2010. I man the business here in Dubai, while Zara oversees the production of the clothes in Pakistan. Currently we have three stores in Dubai, which carry the label JZ COUTURE and can be found in Dubai Mall and Jumeirah. We also sell to online shops such as www.aurab.com, www.modahouse.com, www. tellusfashion.com. TEMPO: Does your work reflect your personal fashion taste? How do you describe JZ Couture’s style? Julia Bruchwitz: Yes 100%! We love the rich
colourful Asian fabrics such as pure silk, chiffon and velvet, and combined with embroidery they make a dress look glamorous. We strive for what we continually call ‘the perfect balance.’ We feel the perfect balance is to revive old traditional embroidery and combine it with western cuts. Our signature is the kaftan and evening gowns; basically a blend of western inspired silhouettes and garment cuts with eastern detailing. This creates a clever infusion that provides a modern take. We focus mostly on floor length gowns that range from sleeveless plunging necklines to a full and floaty sleeve. Whatever the shape, all the pieces exemplify a timeless and classy persona. TEMPO: Who are your clients? Julia Bruchwitz: Our clients, who support the label are mostly Arabs. Westerners opt for the shorter dresses, but we try to meet the demand of every client. Most clients are from Abu Dhabi, aged around 30- 50, and they are big fans of the kaftan or jalabiya. TEMPO: Where does your inspiration come from? Zara Hassan: Mostly from Pakistani and Western patterns of

Zara Hassan: One has to understand the latest trends, colours, silhouettes, and the availability of fabrics. This means constant research, talking to potential customers and understanding their demands. New patterns, new motifs, new fabrics don’t just come about through osmosis, there’s a relentless amount of homework to do all the time.

TEMPO: If you had the choice of all the designers in the world to work with, who would be your choice?? Julia Bruchwitz: Karl Lagerfeld, he is so inspiring, open minded and our favourite designer!

evening gowns. But a fashion designer needs to be a keen observer of the environment around her. It should stimulate her senses. The influences of Pakistan- Asia -Arabia are a fusion of dazzling colours and forms. How could one fail to find inspiration here? TEMPO: What is your philosophy about the art of fashion? And where will you showcase your work? Zara Hassan: Fashion is a personal perception. What we think, what we feel, becomes fashion. It is vibrant and is all about exploring and experiencing. Julia Bruchwitz: JZ Couture participated in The Middle Eastern Fashion Days at Madinat Jumeirah, in Capital Club for a Charity auction for the Pakistani Flood Victims, and also in a fashion show organized by the Pakistani embassy last summer, at the Atlantis Hotel, Dubai. TEMPO: What do you enjoy most about designing clothes? Julia Bruchwitz: Portraying and infusing both our creativity on the dresses. Plus, when you see a client wearing the dress it is most fulfilling. TEMPO: What’s the most challenging part of your work? 25

Trip to Agra We headed straight to Agra like every good Indian tourist to see the Taj Mahal. Over 2.6 million tourists visit the Taj Mahal every year, and I think at least half were there the day we visited. I did have a vision, (ala Princess Diana), of sitting on the stone bench amongst the peacefully empty gardens deep in thought with the Taj in the background. This fleeting thought was replaced with a busy eclectic mix of markets, stalls, people, cows and tuk tuks that surround the gates to the Taj from a kilometer out. We entered the gates and the suspense was killing me, we still couldn’t see the mammoth structure. It wasn’t until we rounded a corner and passed through the beautiful red sandstone gateway that I got my first glimpse of the Taj Mahal, framed by the gateway it was a picture postcard. We toured the grounds, took more pictures in a few hours then we did on the rest of our trip and admired the Taj standing all alone among the stunningly peaceful green manicured gardens. At sunset the Taj is at its most spectacular and even though we were surrounded by thousands it was a very peaceful place, I almost had my

India on our mind When deciding to where to go for Christmas, India wasn’t the first destination that popped into our minds. We wanted to go somewhere close; relatively inexpensive with amazing sights and sounds and somewhere unlike anywhere we had been before for Christmas. With all of this in mind, India was a perfect fit.
Journey to Delhi We set off to Delhi late one evening on our Air India flight; we were lucky enough to be upgraded to business class making our three-hour flight even faster and more enjoyable. Landing in Delhi we were pleasantly surprised by the modern, clean airport that greeted us. Bamboozling is how one travel guide described India and I would certainly agree, the sights, sounds, smells and everything in between are overwhelmingly exciting. On day one we hit up the Chandi Chowk Markets in Old Delhi, which is a rush of people, cars, auto rikshaws and cows! Yes cows, they take pride of place in India being one of the most sacred animals in Hinduism, no one messes with the cows and they wander around at their own pace, going

anywhere they like. It was day one that I made peace with the cows and knew that they too would share the rest of our 14-day holiday; on roads, lane ways, entrances to our hotels and anywhere else that you would never expect to find a cow. The next day and a half around Delhi was filled with visits to beautiful forts, temples and gardens. We never expected there to be so much to do and see in Delhi, you could really stay a whole week and not see the same thing twice. We had to leave Delhi and crack on with the rest of our trip, as every Indian we met said “Only two weeks, you cannot see India in two weeks!”. They were devastated that we would only see the beautiful states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Having not planned too far ahead we stumbled upon a travel centre in Connaught Place and booked a 12-day trip. DTTSC came highly recommended by our trusty new friend we met in the park, I think I read in a guide book about the travel agency touts, however our new friend and the agency couldn’t have been more helpful and hilarious all at the same time. Day three arrived and we set off with our driver Mukesh to start the rest of our Indian adventure. Tempo February 16 - 28, 2011
Our hotel for the night was a welcome retreat from all the fun filled ciaos; we stayed at the Gateway Hotel in Agra and the staff could not have been more welcoming. The hotel is a beautiful colonial style with rooms that had been recently refurbished; some even have a glimpse of the Taj. Had the weather been a touch warmer we would have loved to sit by the pool in a cabana and have a few evening drinks, next time!
Adventure in Rajasthan The next morning we headed to Rajasthan, first stop Ranthambhore National Park. Ranthambhore is a 1334 sq km national park that was a maharajas’ hunting ground until 1970. It has now been turned into a wildlife sanctuary and is the best place to spot wild tigers in India. Seeing a tiger is definitely a game of luck and with only 23 reported tigers in the park, not even waking at 6am to go on our sunrise tour lured them out. We did however see some beautiful wildlife and with a reported 300 species of birds in the park any wildlife lover will not be disappointed.
Next stop Pushkar, look out for Simone’s continuing Indian adventures in our upcoming issue!
Only half way through out trip and we had experienced hundreds if not thousands of sights and sounds of India. In the big scheme of things we had only seen a drop in the ocean of this fascinating country. 27
DOC in the house?

Aka a doctor from New York speaks on the state of public wellness in Abu Dhabi
FatTalk
Part 2
Ok, you’ve read Part 1 and you’re still!!! You’re back for more. Congratulations for being brave, and thank you for your interest... We left off talking about some “encouraging” statistics involving UAE’s path towards the top of the obesity ranks, and some dry medical definitions. Now, lets talk about how this Metabolic Syndrome comes about and some very basic “how to avoid” pearls. How does this happen? Obesity, morbid obesity ( imagine being tagged with this one by your Doc, it’s a real definition), Metabolic Syndrome. I have often wonderedat what point in being overweight do you suddenly realize that you have really overdone it? Obesity / Metabolic Syndrome are not based on a single factor, but rather a combination and interplay of many factors. The good news- many of these factors we have direct control over. Some of these factors include (but are not limited to): diet, sedentary lifestyle, genetics, medical/ psychiatric determinants. Surely there are no great surprises there? So, let’s look at a few basic facts which may seem very relevant to you all. Who drinks sodas? Fact: consumption of sweetened drinks has been associated with increasing rates of obesity. Who eats fast food (regularly)? Fact: these foods are energy dense carbohydrate rich, are consumed in larger portion size than an average meal, and are much easier to obtain (who can cook or has time to cook?). Fast foods are a recognized real risk. Less physical exertion is a risk- everyone drives, everyone takes the elevator, everyone wants the closest parking spot, and in fact some folks (I have seen it with my own
Dr Dave Solomon eyes), don’t even go into the shops- they prefer to have someone come out from the shop and take care of their needs, while lounging in the comfort of their own cars (and of course munching out on that super sized burger and fries). Come on now! You’ll eventually lose your legs with this kind of behavior. Evolution!!! Of course there are medical causes but before you get too excited thinking that you are off the hook, these folks are only a small percentage. Patients have told me- “my glands are overreactive” or “ I retain a lot of water” (Pacific Ocean possibly?) However, aside from the sarcasm, there are medical and genetic conditions which result in patient’s retaining weight. One last cause i would like to highlight, is simply the lack of education and awareness. It seems so obvious and simple. But, why is this education not available or not considered important ? Social perceptions of obesity associated with affluence VS social stigma? So next time you are feeling bored and decide its a good time to snack, maybe opt out of the super sized fast food meal with a bucket sized soda (don’t get attracted by the enticing junk (toys) for the kids), and get into the habit of choosing fruit, yogurt, water, whole wheat bread, etc instead. Even better, if you’re not even hungry, just bored, don’t eat! Find something to do: go for a walk. Over time, your body and your psyche will thank you for it. As they say, “you are what you eat”. Look around, and appreciate the truth in that statement.

“I Feel the Need… the Need for Speed”
Maverick fromTop Gun
I recently attended the Al Ain Aerobatic Show in Abu Dhabi’s “Second City”. I am no stranger to air shows and have been known to go to great lengths to see them. You see, I have been a “Wingnut” since a very early age and am naturally attracted to all things aeronautical. My father was a fighter pilot for the USAF and I spent some years in the US Navy as a flight officer. Even my current vocation is aviation related, you can’t keep me away from these winged wonders, so basically, it’s in my blood! I look at manned flight as a minor miracle. Flying is the rare combination of engineering, art and skill. As one who has experience in high performance jets, it is difficult for me to convey the sensations of speed, freedom and power to those that have not had the opportunity. Being able to loop, roll and go anywhere you wish in the vast three dimensional environment of the atmosphere has no rival in any earthbound activities. You can go from weightless one moment to seven times the force of gravity the next. Loud and fast is just icing on the cake! High performance flight is physically demanding but mentally exhilarating. The weather at Al Ain airport was one of those perfect UAE winter days with a clear blue sky and a light cool breeze. Because my time was limited I did not get to see all the shows that day but what I saw was impressive. The Baltic Bees (Latvia), Saudi Hawks and Turkish Stars jet demonstration teams all put on a heck of a show and I was envious of them from my grounded perch.
The aroma of jet fuel and the roar of the turbines made me yearn for the “wild blue yonder”. In between these feature shows there were radio control model flights and some dirt bike stunts. The RC models had actual jet engines and were incredibly detailed. They sounded, looked and smelled just like the real thing. There was also an impressive demonstration by a solo UAE Air Force Mirage fighter aircraft. It’s comforting to know these guys are watching out for us. I had fun and that is what life is all about. There were activities for all. I was dreading a parking and overcrowding fiasco but that did not occur as logistics were well planned and executed. The only minor gripes I have is that there were some schedule inconsistencies and then I developed a sore throat from sunburned tonsils and a stiff neck due to looking skyward for several hours straight, it was a small price to pay.
