VOLUME 23 | DECEMBER 16 - 31 | 2010

FROM THE EDITOR Hello Abu Dhabi, Sometimes in life you meet someone who leaves an indelible impression on you. It could be big and life changing, or small and insightful. But these impressions keep on popping into your subconscious to make you rethink, and manifest as learnings that weave into the tapestry of your daily lives. In this issue we present five boys who finally got to meet their inspiration, Hakeem Olajuwon. The five can be seen almost every weekend at the basket ball court in Baynounah or Mushrif practicing relentlessly. To them basketball isn›t just a game, but a passion. Its rules and principles guide them on and off the court...in the way they interpret hard work, teamwork, and discipline. To young people, it›s not just about the game, but the entire package, and the purveyors of the game play a leading role. Tempo was happy to seize on a unique opportunity to bring these aspiring young athletes together with Hakeem. Olajuwon, who visited Abu Dhabi recently as part of the JamFest, proved to be a great ambassador for the game, and an exemplary role model. The boys didn›t only want to know only about what Hakeem did on court, but also about Hakeem›s current life off it. He chatted with the boys with a sense of responsibility, knowing that they would hang on to each word he spoke. He talked not only only about the rush of stardom and the NBA, but also about the importance of character, commitment and good values. See an excerpt of their chat on pages 6 and 7. As a voice of the 18 to 35 demographic and in recognition of the UAE population›s average age as being 27, Tempo takes this opportunity to call on organisers to choose quality over glamour, substance over glitz. Let›s all help to enrich young lives.

SPACE Dear Abu Dhabi Tempo,

Dear Ellaine Tempo,

I was around a day after National day, after hearing the fun news about Tempo from my friends. I went there, hoping to catch you guys, but you weren’t around… I thought you’d last a week just like those bazaar tents. Anyways just to let you know I signed on the flag, I’m glad to be in the UAE!

I pick up the magazine for the creative content you guys put up and solely for “City Bites”!! My wife and I eat out at least three times a week because a) she can’t cook, b) I can’t cook, and c) we love to eat out. The reviews on the restaurants are quite funny and true. We recently decided to try out the Lebanese restaurant (Khalidyah) at around 12 am, and you were right about the quirky waiter!! While we waited for our food, he joked around with the British brothers a table away from us, before he entertained us. We went into fits when he brought the bill and said, “This is 75 Dhs, after discount”, when we really knew there weren’t any discounts. Thanks for the savvy review; and I’d like to write food reviews for the magazine too.

The lucky readers who won Creamfields tickets gave us their definition of music and what it means to “groove to the vibes”. Cyril E. Ticao Jr Age: 30 Nationality: Filipino

Darren D’costa Age: 22 Nationality: Indian

“Groovin to the vibes”- for me taking great pleasure or satisfaction... like enjoying oneself by grooving into music that could take me into a nostalgic and distinctive emotional atmosphere.

For most people “groovin’ to the vibes” means going to a concert, but for me its a totally different thing. It’s all about letting your hair down, kicking off your shoes, listening to some good music and dancing!! Can be done in a club, disco or in the shower! Groovy music is essential... gotta be careful not to slip (in the shower that is).

Kym V. Age: 21 Nationality: Indian

My definition of “groovin” mean stepping out of my high heel shoes and formal clothes, letting the music fill my ears and my soul and then just letting go of mind and body and then just dancing all night till the sun comes up! And that is exactly what I would do at the Creamfields concert, as the electronic music will be just the high I need to go “ABOVE & BEYOND” ;)

Jehanne Fernandes Age: 21 Nationality: Indian

As defined by Google, ‘groovin’ ‘means to enjoy oneself intensely and ‘vibes’ means mental or emotional vibrations. However, when the two come together in ‘’groovin’ to the vibe’’, the essence of the meaning is a tad bit ‘cooler’ or more ‘fashionable’ as you and I might think. Yes, it is less rigidly defined by words..

To me, the term would suggest losing oneself in complete nirvana. To completely let go and drown myself in the music into a state of oblivion. Which is exactly the way I feel when listening to music produced by DAVID GUETTA, ABOVE & BEYOND AND SANDER VON DOORN.

TWITTER & FACEBOOK QUOTES beankssiduous Karmel weekly is great, yes. but tempo “beats” it with a more PERSONAL touch. hihi.. @AbuDhabiTempo = family :) 4

Claude Fernandes Your article on page 22 (Dec 1 issue) was quite interesting. Thanks.

a chat with basketball legend hakEEm olajuwon The Houston Rockets star Hakeem Olajuwon was in town and attended the NBA JamFest on Yas Island (2 -4 December). Tempo’s youth community reporters Karam Bukair, Nader Saab, Abid Raza, Ameen Abboud and Omar El-Temtamy caught up with their sports hero for a cosy chat on what its like to play for the NBA, what it takes to be an athlete and how they can learn from his experience.

a chat with hakeem olajuwon Karam Bukair: I heard that you fasted during Ramadan while you played in the NBA season. Is it true? And what it hard? Hakeem: Well in the beginning yes [it was hard], after the first couple of days the mindset is different, I got used to it and then actually I have more energy, much more than when I’m playing in season. That’s why the statistics in Ramadan go up, get better.

Hakeem Olajuwon Facts Full Name: Akeem Abdul Olajuwon Nickname: Hakeem “The Dream” Height: 7 foot

Karam Bukair: Was there any pressure from your coach and teammates to break your fast? Hakeem: No, because you perform better! The stats don’t go down, the stats go up! Nader Saab: Throughout your NBA career, who was the biggest threat to guard as a center? Hakeem: Threat? In my time there were three... we had to play against these guys: Shaquille O’Neal, Patrick (Ewing) and David (Robinson). Really, when you play against these guys, you don’t have any advantages, it was more of a battle. The biggest challenge, I would say was Shaquille...and also Patrick. Patrick’s very tough.

Rizwan (camera guy): Hakeem, who do you consider a challenge that you would have guarding today, in the NBA?

1980

Enrolls at University of Houston as redshirt freshman

Hakeem: Well today, they don’t really have like a real, true centre. Like Dwight Howard, he would be more like a power forward, he’s a true power forward.

1982-84

Leads University of Houston to the final game of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament two consecutive years

1984

Selected as the number one overall pick in the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft by the Houston Rockets

Abid Raza: What is your most memorable moment in the NBA? Hakeem: Winning the championship, the first championship because we went to the finals in 1986 and we didn’t go back until 10 years later, so we could finally win! Ameen Abboud: What do you consider the most rewarding aspect of your NBA, your personal and your social life? Hakeem: Well, a combination.. I’d say for a career, is to win in the championship.. that’s always the goal, and the social is the accomplishment of the social work, the foundation. So I look at my whole career as a blessing of all sorts, especially playing without an injury also, like a major injury, is a great accomplishment. Omar El-Temtamy: What would you have done in life if you weren’t a professional NBA player? Hakeem: That’s a good question. I love designs and architecture. I would probably see myself as a designer. I like the creativity in design, like a fashion designer. Ellaine from Tempo talking to the boys: What was it like to chat with Hakeem? In unison: “Awwwwsome!” Abid: I don’t think I’ll ever wash my hands again.”

What’s HOT AL Dhafra Festival dishes out a traditional treat 16-25 December, Zayed City (Al Gharbia)

Those of you looking for cultural Emirati traditional activities should look into the Al Dhafra Festival which is held every year in Al Gharbia. This is the fourth season that Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) is holding the Al Dhafra Festival with greater focus on the traditional market for Emirati handicrafts, a souk showcasing arts made by local handcrafters and artisans. The traditional market would feature over 180 shops built in the traditional way using mud, wood and palm fronds (areesh), displaying popular foods and handicrafts, amid traditional gatherings. ADACH aims to revive an interest in handicrafts and help market them locally and internationally. It also aims to encourage people to develop their handcrafting talents and provides an opportunity for all citizens aged between eighteen and sixty-six to take part in small workshop activities. It also hopes to encourage the elderly to teach younger generations these traditional skills. Besides that, the market seeks to attract families, with a number of distinctive and entertaining events such as the camel competition, photography contests and safaris.

CITYBITES

FUDDRUCKERS The Scene: You’re either a Fuddruckers regular or you think it just isn’t for you. Essentially Fuddruckers is a burger place, and in Abu Dhabi it has a conjoined bakery and an ice creamery (Marble Slab). Fuddruckers is known for its large burger patties and self-service toppings bar where you can add sauces like sautéed onions or guacamole, and toppings like nacho cheese, diced onions, chili, fresh salsa and a multitude of condiments. The staff is friendly and prompt (especially when they ask to answer a survey.), and oh, get there early, during the weekends because the waiting lines could definitely kill your appetite!

fill up on carbs after a night out, go ahead and have the whole meal to yourself. If not, share… and you’ll still not go hungry. Fuddruckers is surprisingly good for vegetarians too. The wrap with veggies, guacamole and sour cream tastes pretty fresh. If you like you can substitute the meat burgers with a veggie option. For you soda addicts, there are bottomless drinks galore! So it’s just one of those places that you can get hooked on, or not want to venture in. You just have to be a huge burger fan.

What we’ve tried: Tempo begs to differ with the “World’s Greatest Burger” slogan. Yes, the burgers are pretty tasty, but we’ve had better. The good thing about Fuddruckers is that the 100% beef patty tastes fresh and it can be cooked to order (note: if you want medium-rare, ask for rare). If you’re a big eater then this is the place you can build a jaw-breaking mountain of a burger by cramming it full of extras from the free salad bar. As a result, you’re likely to leave feeling that paying double what you’re normally charged at a standard burger joint is not half bad because you managed to triple your portion. But note this, the portions are HUGE! Whether its burgers or the other stuff on the menu. They have chicken Californian wraps, or the footlong hotdog combos with the chicken Caesar salad...just make sure your stomach is empty and your mouth is the size of the Corniche Tunnel. If you’re trying to

NEW YORK FRIES The Scene: With its open kitchen atmosphere, New York Fries is legendary for...well, french fries, which aren’t really from France, but better served at...New York Fries. Whether you’re confused or not, one thing is clear, the guys at NYF do nothing but fries, with enough sauces and topings to make a grown man cry. They use surreptitious means....they lure you by making you try out the free samples, and next thing you know, you get wicked cravings for NYF!! What we tried: We ordered the Imli, which was a huge slump of everything on a cup of down-to earth crispy fries, retaining bits of the potato skin. The ‘imli’ (tamarind) sauce on top was tangy but it may be a tad bland to those who are familiar with the sharp contrast of sweet and sour in authentic tamarind sauces prepared in South Asia. But the toppings- tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and the greens tasted great on their own. Where: Khalidiyah Mall, Foodcourt Price: AED 17 15 11

fashion focus: DAR SARA Dar Sara High Fashion owned by Joumana Al Hayek first launched at Al Hana Center in end of 2001. Right from the start the designer had a keen interest in embedding Swarovski crystals in her designs, and to create an atelier with a wide collection ranging from high end wedding dresses to simple evening wear. TEMPO: How did you get into fashion design? I started as a painter; I’m an artist originally and always adored the lifestyle of a painter. My expertise in, and passion for painting, along with a love for accessories and fashion guided me towards creating my own line of fashion accessories. It started as a hobby that took me that took me into creating a full line of accessories.

TEMPO: Did you always want to be a fashion designer, even when you were young? Ever since I was a kid my parents felt I had a touch creating clothing and artistic designs! They were impressed to see the first dress I made and that was when I was 13 years old. I even had my initials embroidered on it! Then they decided to send me to the UK to take fashion courses and to broaden my knowledge about the workings of the fashion industry and what does this field required. I completed my studies and in 1999. Even then I saw a huge potential in the Arab world to create something that suits the Arab woman and give them an original look that was also contemporary and stylish. I recognised that there was a demand, so I took the first step and kicked off with Dar Sara’s High Fashion. TEMPO: Does your work reflect your personal fashion taste? How do you describe your style? In general I like simple clothing which you might see on me often. I like simple jeans, tops and suits. But when it comes to the fashion world you have to be creative with your choices of textile materials, crystals colors…and all those intangibles that add to the which adds to the style of a woman. Dar Sara now has a number of fashion designers working under its roof. Since I am the owner and managing the needs of every customer I am still involved in every since piece that’s produced here, from sketches, to fabric, to crystals and to the final output. I even make sure that every creation is executed to perfection and is delivered to the customer on time. I would say that my style is very eastern and I make sure to transfer this quality to my collection. The eastern look is one of the most mysterious, exotic and tasteful styles in this region and you can definitely create wonders with it! TEMPO: Where does your inspiration come from? My aunt was my inspiration. She was trained by Christian Dior; and I used to watch her working on small details. When she felt that I had interest she pushed me to go after my passion!. She is definitely my inspiration!

TEMPO: Your show at the DFW was fantastic, what’s your philosophy about the art of fashion? Fashion design is by definition an art; and that can’t be the case if nothing inspires you in life or gives you any strong emotions. The philosophy behind fashion is all about emotions and inspiration. Even your choice of dress is an emotional behavior and you similarly apply your emotions when you make your own designs! Dar Sara High Fashion participated in shows ranging from “Glamour in the City” Crystallized Swarovski Elements in year 2009, emerging as one of the top five fashion ateliers in the UAE; to Dubai Bride Show, showcasing the one million dirham dress; and in the capital of fashion Beirut launching the Victorian wedding dresses at the emirates night in the Grand Habtoor hotel; in addition to taking part in Style Arabia and KSA in 2010. TEMPO: What do you enjoy most about designing clothes? Choosing the fabric, cleaning and ordering crystals, selecting color swatches and working with my team! They

are so much fun and we often work late hours to create the best in design and quality! TEMPO: What’s the most challenging part? In our business you have to take things very patiently – from handling a client’s needs to handling the pressures of delivering on time. You also have to be creative to design whatever suits the client. We take into consideration may factors including complexion, culture and traditions as they vary from one woman to another. TEMPO: If you had the choice of all designers in the world to work with/for, who would it be? Christian Dior for sure! Dior is definitely the most influential fashion designer in the world. It’s a respected global brand across a wide range of products and it is my dream to become as big as this brand. TEMPO: Who in your view is the most influential fashion designer? I have two: John Galliano and Channel

EMERGING TALENT

Nayla has produced and directed four films: Unveiling Dubai (2004), Arabana (2006), Once (2009) and Malal (2010). Nayla has received two awards: “Emirates Woman of the Year,” in 2005, and “Best Emirati Filmmaker” in 2007. “Malal” (which translates into ‘Bored’ in Arabic) is the latest film by the multi-award winning Emirati filmmaker Nayla Al Khaja. The film was launched this month in the emirates, and will make its official world debut at the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF). The highly anticipated film is the first to be produced by an Emirati outside the UAE. It tells the story of an Emirati couple on their honeymoon in Kerala, India. The unveiling of the film featured an exclusive behind the scenes short film that shows the making of the movie. The ‘making of ‘ was produced by two talented young Emirati film students who accompanied Nayla and the film crew on set in India. Nayla is now planning the production on her first ever full-length feature film, which should start filming in December 2011. Talking on the release of her new film, Nayla Al Khaja

said: “I am very proud of Malal and believe that it marks an important step in the development of the UAE’s film industry. By producing Malal outside of the UAE we have set a benchmark, which I hope will act as a catalyst for other Emiratis to see the opportunities that exist for film making at home but also abroad. “I hope to build on the positive momentum generated by Malal’s release and look forward to the challenge of helping the next generation of aspiring UAE filmmakers into future leaders; so they can continue to present the UAE’s unique heritage and culture to the world through film,” she added. Abdulrahman Al Madani, one of the interns that accompanied Nyala on set said: “Watching Nayla and her crew work was an eye-opening experience. We were able to learn things from them first-hand, which we couldn’t have done in any classroom. We look forward to implementing the techniques we’ve learned from them and hopefully follow in Nayla’s footsteps and make films of our own in the future.”

ARTICULATE

Jalal’s Art Trip Renowned digital artist and gallery owner, Jalal Luqman, for his fourth Art Trip in 2011, is taking a select few budding artists into the ocean! The dates of the trip have been set tentatively for March when the weather is perfect. The artists will get inspiration for their exhibition from the deep waters of the ocean by scuba diving and snorkelling into the waters... It all sounds super exciting to me. Jalal asks me if I would like to join the trip as a crew member, and I nod enthusiastically. We discussed the trip over lunch, along with another famous digital artist, Sumayyah al Suwaidi. Jalal is upbeat about this trip and tells me, ‘this time I am going back to the roots’. I am confused and ask him what he means by it. ‘You know, the roots of our culture’, he says. ‘Instead of just artists, I wish to take poets, musicians, and video artists too. Fine art, poetry, and music are all a part of our culture,’ he adds. I am truly impressed by his thinking. Sumayyah is curious and asks how he can incorporate music and art into the exhibition? ‘Musicians can compose new melodies for the exhibition, and it can serve as background music. Artists will showcase their artwork on the walls. If there is a poet, he or she could recite new poems inspired by the trip at the exhibition,’ he adds with a passion in his voice. Both Sumayyah and I nod our heads with’ hmms’s and aaah’s.’ He has clearly thought this through. He has it all set in his mind’s eye.

part 2

‘We are meeting at 5 am at the gallery. The participants are going to sign the release forms, and then we will set off in a bus to the location, where everyone will then board a dhow. Seven Seas divers are my partners for the dive trip, and they will be sponsoring the scuba diving and snorkelling equipment. There are going to be three dives in three different locations during the course of the day, and at night, we may sleep over at a nearby hotel’. This is exciting stuff. I love this idea being a bit of an adventure buff myself. We are finished with our lunch now, and Jalal is ready to leave because he has other engagements. Before he leaves I ask him about how emerging artists can participate in this exhibition, and he replies ‘the invitation is going to be on my website, the Ghaf Gallery website and on my blog and twitter page as well’. After Jalal leaves, Sumayyah and I have a chat about the trip. We both are intrigued by the idea, and expect exciting works to come out of this trip. I have always respected Jalal for his talent but my respect for him has grown manifold after seeing his dedication and devotion.

So, if you are a budding artist interested in this trip or an art lover who would love to see the exhibition inspired from the deep, do keep a look out for invitations from Jalal Luqman and Ghaf Gallery. The invites will be out tentatively in the middle of December, around the same time as this issue of Tempo.

feast or famine? The time is here again for the most popular holidays celebrated by many expatriots (or expatriates) living in Abu Dhabi. They are Christmas and New Year’s Eve....I could count Thanksgiving but that was last month and is rarely celebrated outside of North America. Funny enough, even the USA and Canada observe it on separate days! I kind of enjoy Christmas in Abu Dhabi. Back home the commercial interests start late in October and are relentless in cajoling folks to start purchasing gifts for the “Big Day. “ The malls and traffic get progressively more congested as time gets closer to December 25th. As a guy, I usually wait to the last week to do my shopping and the malls resemble the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Tension is high and tempers flare during these last minute retail outings...Not my idea of fun. In Abu Dhabi things are so much more subdued and the holiday pressure is off. It gives one time to reflect on the “reason for the season”. Sure I miss my friends, family and the parties. Sitting in front of a roaring fireplace, the house decorated with twinkly lights and

the smell of a freshly cut fir tree standing in the corner of the room can’t be beat. Exchanging gifts with loved ones (especially the children) is always fun! It’s the commercialism that bothers me back home and I don’t have to experience that here if I don’t choose to. I will have to admit the perfect weather in December here is not real conducive to a strong “Holiday Spirit” for me. I have always associated Christmastime with cold and nasty weather. Not many fireplaces here or fir trees for that matter. Although the malls in Abu Dhabi try, I miss the outside street decorations and the lights in front of businesses and residences. This will mark my third season away and while there are a lot of things I miss, I still remember to count my blessings and make the best out of things. New Year’s Eve is another story! I call it “Amateur Night” and try to stay off the road as some drivers who may not have imbibed all year don’t know their limits. It may be better here but I don’t take chances. Anyone know of a good fireworks show?
