With the UAE’s big 40th anniversary looming the Tempo staff brainstormed ideas to make it a special community celebration. There were many ideas bandied about, including exhibitions, parade etc, but the one idea that seemed to rise above the rest, and stick through all the discussions, was a short video competition with the simple theme: “I LOVE UAE.” The New York Film Academy quickly embraced the idea to support Tempo, recognising the timeliness of the initiative and its value in nurturing creative and artistic expression. Tempo sees it as a great platform that would provide the community with an opportunity to show their love. The “I LOVE UAE” competition met all our criteria: grassroots - tick, community - tick, innovative - tick, and relevant - big tick. With this, Tempo rolls out the “I LOVE UAE” video competition and calls for all to participate. The video doesn’t have to be super polished, but it needs to come from the heart. It can be a short song, a jig, a poem, a skit, a collage of images, a short “promo” or ad. It can be in any language, but it should be authentic and heartfelt. So join us, and make your voice heard to celebrate this gracious nation that stands as a beacon of hope, peace and harmony. Be creative. Be genuine. Be kind.

TEMPO ASKED READERS YOUR OPINIONS ABOUT OUR NEW LOGO

Lama Ys: I like the new one, the plain black has an urban feel to it.

A mixed bag of responses…

vs Muaz Ahmed: Old one Lynn Abadi: Old one Mark Mungkey Vicente: New!!!. Eli Pearson: Ahhh new one looks amazing!!!!!!

Bearose Karmel Velarde: @ Diego I kind of agree. Maybe if the new logo retained the colours of the old logo? I like the new logo because it has more character, but having colour would make it happier like you said.

Rozanne Yanez Vaz: New :) New for sure. It’s sexy! (can I say that?)

AnN Jc: I think the new font is a killer but the old one attracts more attention because of the colours.

Artmystyle Unitedarabemirates: the old one speaks itself the word TEMPO coz it comes with different colours...there is no TEMPO in the new one..

Do you have an opinion about the new Tempo? Send it to us at editorial@abudhabitempo.com

Diego Kabuloso: I like the old one ‘cause it looks more multicultural. I felt its colours were more representative and more “recognizable.” It was more “happy” and “accessible” to all kinds of people. The new logo is pretty cool, but it is more like something you would like to see on a t-shirt at an evening event. It is darker and doesn’t really make people look at it…it doesn’t ask for attention, you know. But if you put your logo on a t-shirt, I’d want the new one.

Dee D: The old logo looked somewhat better… but I think it’s just because everyone got used to it. This one will own!!!!!! ChristinaSolis @AbuDhabiTempo: The size of the previous magazine was okay too. Lighter weight paper is cool. :-)

SHAKING HANDS AROUND THE WORLD

IBWG MONTHLY NETWORKING LUNCHEON

Sent in by Saikat Saha

Pay attention to the etiquette and customs of handshaking. In business, the first thing we do when we meet someone is shake hands. While it seems simple enough, this “first impression” of greeting sends a powerful message about you and your respect for others. For the most part, the western-style handshake is the accepted form of greeting in the International Business World. However, the manner in which it is performed varies from country to country. So, here are a few ways you might be greeted by others when doing business abroad: CHINA - While the western handshake is accepted, it is performed with a lighter grip and a pumping motion. Chinese also lower their eyes slightly as a sign of respect when meeting someone. Staring into their eyes can be perceived as a sign of disrespect.

JAPAN - Both handshaking and bowing are accepted forms of greeting in international business circles so take your lead from the person you are meeting. If shaking hands, do so lightly. If you are greeted with a bow, respond by bowing in kind. RUSSIA - Russians usually use a firm (sometimes very firm) handshake when meeting a guest. If you›ve met the person before don›t be surprised if the greeting includes a hug. Russian men customarily kiss their guest›s cheeks (men and women alike) while women reserve such intimacies for other Russians and simply shake hands with foreigners. FRANCE - Shake hands with one brisk stroke upon arrival and departure and make sure to shake hands with everyone. LATIN AMERICA - Latin Americans use a light, lingering handshake (about twice as long as an American handshake) and pulling away too soon is interpreted as rejection. A man may offer his hand to a woman, and he may «kiss» the top of a woman›s hand. EUROPEANS - While their handshake is the western style, eastern and western Europeans re-shake hands whenever they are apart for a period of time. For example, it is considered polite to shake hands when you leave for lunch and when you return. IN ARAB COUNTRIES - Male friends may embrace and kiss each other on both cheeks following a light and lingering handshake. They also stand very close to one another when talking. If you are a non-Arab woman traveling to an Arab country, let the man offer his hand first because some Muslim men do not shake hands with women. Many Arab business women who often travel to Western countries shake hands with men and women. Let her offer her hand first.

Al Muna Primary School brought Broadway to Abu Dhabi recently with a nice performance of The Wizard of Oz. An audience of over 500 people, made up of parents, teachers and guests gathered in the school hall and were overwhelmed by quality of the show and the performance of the students. Over three months’ worth of preparation went into rehearsals for the performance, including a purpose built set, costumes and script development, not to mention the hard work from the children. The show had an ensemble cast of 30 main performers, but all of the 350 children from the school had some part to play in the one hour and half performance. The children gave two performances of the show over two evenings, and were rewarded on the second night with a five minute standing ovation from the audience. The show’s director and Year Six teacher, Miss Kay Goldsworthy, was overjoyed, “The response from the audience has been fantastic tonight. Both nights have been a sell out and the children have really put on a special show for them. I’m very proud.” Year Six pupil and performer of the lead role in the show, Artemis Prevot described her experience. “It was scary at first, but once I was on stage I realised that this was the most fun I have ever had in my life!”. The performance was also filmed and edited by the New York Film Academy Abu Dhabi, giving the children a chance to look back upon their moment in the spotlight for many years to come.

GAME HEDZ

Blakniss | Original game head from Atari to XBox!

GAME BYTZ : Tid bits of news from around the gaming universe Mass Effect 3 Delayed Til 2012 My initial reaction: INCONCEIVABLE…but not surprising. You should have heard by now. Likely a strategic decision by developers, Bioware. Understandable, but we’re not happy about it! Bioware may be looking to escape the crowded fall season, and get the jump on 2012, much the way Visceral did with Dead Space 2 at the beginning of 2011. There’s lots of competition so everybody’s bringing their ‘A’ game. Bioware said they want to ensure the title ‘exceeds everyone’s expectations’ (See Bioware on Facebook). It’s set for launch in the first quarter of 2012…so far.

Portal 2 Raises Eyebrows & Expectations Portal 2 has lived up to its hype. 2010 Spike TV VGA’s Most Anticipated Game of the Year for 2011, critics and gamers alike can’t get enough of it. It’s yet to be determined how it compares with the rest of the 2011 releases to come, but if this is anything to go by, Wired magazine gave it their first perfect 10. This puts serious pressure on all other upcoming titles, especially sequels like ME3 to deliver the goods. Why so great? Perhaps the balance of cerebral challenge, clever game play, excellent character design/portrayal and great graphics, all while retaining the occasional satisfying explosion we all need to make it through the day.

Rapper Drake Drops Out of Gears of War 3 Set to voice the character, Jace Stratton, Drake dropped out due to scheduling reasons, according to Cliffy B, nothing sinister. The part will now be voiced by actor, Michael B. Jordan (Friday Night Lights, NBC).

SHARING BUSINESS PHOTOS WITH GOOGLE MAPS Google has unveiled Business Photos for Google Maps, a new product that allows users to check out the inside of local businesses. Basically Google’s own photographers take pictures of the interiors of a business and place it on that business’ ‘Place Page.’ The idea is to link it with Google Maps and help people looking for more information about the business . Right now Google photographers are shooting photographs in the US, Australia and Japan, but are expected to make their way around the world to our very neighborhoods. (By the way… Google owns all the photos).

THIS TEAR AND E PAG G IT HAN

ARE YOU A “PLANETARIAN” (ie. someone who loves the planet)? Tell us what you do daily to make a “green difference”. Email: editorial@abudhabitempo.com

TOP 25 THINGS YOU CAN DO TODAY TO STOP GLOBAL WARMING Buy intelligently- One bottle of 1.5l requires less energy and produces less waste than three bottles of 0.5l. As well, buy recycled paper products: it takes 70 to 90% less energy to make recycled paper and it prevents the loss of forests worldwide. Recycle your organic waste- Around 3% of the greenhouse gas emissions through the methane is released by decomposing bio-degradable waste. By recycling organic waste or composting it if you have a garden, you can help eliminate this problem! Just make sure that you compost it properly, so it decomposes with sufficient oxygen, otherwise your compost will cause methane emissions and smell foul.

Global Warming is a serious problem. Each of us can do share to be part of the collective solution. We call upon all to become “planetarians” and adopt a more responsible lifestyle.

Reuse your shopping bag- When shopping, it saves energy and waste to use a reusable bag instead of accepting a disposable one in each shop. Waste not only discharges CO2 and methane into the atmosphere, it can also pollute the air, groundwater and soil.

Choose products that come with little packaging and buy refills when you canYou will also cut down on waste production and energy use... another help against global warming.

Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (cfl)- CFLs use 60% less energy than a regular bulb. This simple switch will save about 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Reduce waste- Most products we buy cause greenhouse gas emissions in one or another way, e.g. during production and distribution. By taking your lunch in a reusable lunch box instead of a disposable one, you save the energy needed to produce new lunch boxes.

Install a programmable thermostat- Programmable thermostats will automatically lower the heat or air conditioning at night and raise them again in the morning. This can also save you on your energy bill.

Move your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer- Almost half of the energy we use in our homes goes to heating and cooling. You could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple adjustment. Clean or replace filters on your furnace and air conditioner- Cleaning a dirty air filter can save 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases- Look for the Energy Star label on new appliances to choose the most energy efficient products available.

Be sure you’re recycling at home- You can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide a year by recycling half of the waste your household generates.

Do not leave appliances on standby- Use the “on/off” function on the machine itself. A TV set that’s switched on for 3 hours a day (the average time Europeans spend watching TV) and in standby mode during the remaining 21 hours uses about 40% of its energy in standby mode.

Insulate and weatherize your homeProperly insulating your walls and ceilings can save 25% of your home heating bill and 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Caulking and weather-stripping can save another 1,700 pounds per year. Energy Efficient has more information on how to better insulate your home.

Wrap your water heater in an insulation blanket- You’ll save 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple action. You can save another 550 pounds per year by setting the thermostat no higher than 50°C.

Use a clothesline instead of a dryer whenever possible- You can save 700 pounds of carbon dioxide when you air dry your clothes for 6 months out of the year.

Reuse your water- Recycle water used for washing vegetables to water plants. Use less hot water- It takes a lot of energy to heat water. You can use less hot water by installing a low flow showerhead (350 pounds of carbon dioxide saved per year) and washing your clothes in cold or warm water (500 pounds saved per year) instead of hot.

Take a shower instead of a bath- A shower takes up to four times less energy than a bath. To maximize the energy saving, avoid power showers and use low-flow showerheads, which are cheap and provide the same comfort.

Defrost old fridges and freezers regularly- Even better is to replace them with newer models, which all have automatic defrost cycles and are generally up to two times more energyefficient than their predecessors.

Cover your pots while cooking- Doing so can save a lot of the energy needed for preparing the dish. Even better are pressure cookers and steamers: they can save around 70%!

Use the washing machine or dishwasher only when they are full- If you need to use it when it is half full, then use the half-load or economy setting. There is also no need to set the temperatures high. Nowadays detergents are so efficient that they get your clothes and dishes clean at low temperatures.

Get a home energy auditMany utilities offer free home energy audits to find where your home is poorly insulated or energy inefficient. You can save up to 30% off your energy bill and 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Energy Star can help you find an energy specialist.

Replace your old singleglazed windows with double-glazing- This requires a bit of upfront investment, but will halve the energy lost through windows and pay off in the long term. If you go for the best the market has to offer (wooden-framed double-glazed units with low-emission glass and filled with argon gas), you can even save more than 70% of the energy lost.

Move your fridge and freezer- Placing them next to the cooker or boiler consumes much more energy than if they were standing on their own. For example, if you put them in a hot cellar room where the room temperature is 30-35ºC, energy use is almost double and causes an extra 160kg of CO2 emissions for fridges per year and 320kg for freezers.

Don’t let heat escape from your house over a long periodWhen airing your house, open the windows for only a few minutes. If you leave a small opening all day long, the energy needed to keep it warm inside during six cold months (10ºC or less outside temperature) would result in almost 1 ton of CO2 emissions.

DESSERT TIME

The desserts may not be the traditional Chinese dessert, but their cakes were good for four people to share! To help people choose their dessert, they’ve made replicas out of plastic and when you order dessert they bring over a tray showing what portions look like. We’ve never seen that before but it is a great idea and less wasteful than having real examples laid out. We got a bit of a shock when the waiter actually touched the desserts with his bare hands (that is when we all thought it was real). We ended up having the scrumptious six-layer of rich chocolate cake frosted with chocolate chips called “The Great Wall of Chocolate” (great pun there), and their very berry strawberry cheesecake.

P.F. CHANGS THE SCENE

Upon entering, towering twin stallions greet you at the door, and as you get seated you find the emperor and his henchmen who rode their steeds presiding over the dining room inside. The first thing you notice besides the Chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling and the dark wood walls painted with scenes of Chinese life is the amount of people feasting around large tables. You can expect this restaurant to be packed every now and then. The only off-putting aspect of this lovely environment is the rock slash pop music, which totally doesn’t suit the theme of this restaurant and which, when added to the din of a busy roomful of happy diners, ratchets up the noise level. Service was very friendly, very attentive, with waiters always scurrying around.

It’s a shame that Chang’s only offers expensive imported bottled water. “Aqua Panna!! There are excellent local waters here that don’t need to be flown thousands of miles to get here and therefore cost a fraction of the amount. Additionally, the restaurant does not provide complimentary tea for your meal like any other Chinese restaurants... boo! So, it may not be the most authentic Chinese food but offers pretty good fare considering it is in a mall (definitely an upscale from your average foodcourt tastebuds!!) Will be back for sure. The menu gives Chinese classics a contemporary tweak; one finds the Chinese staples that everyone loves… the spring rolls, the vegetarian lettuce wraps and the dynamite shrimps (which is a BIG hit)!! The signature plates such as the Chang’s spicy chicken, the fried rice and the Mongolian beef that we ordered were artfully presented. Although all Szechuan dishes on the menu marked as “spicy” were far milder than any such classics from a Szechuan restaurant, P.F. Chang’s seemed to prefer keeping the chilis on the light side and allowing patrons to add heat to taste at the table. Diners can choose between white rice, and brown rice (at no additional charge) which is a healthy and delicious option not normally available in most Chinese restaurants.

PHOTOGRAPHER: Tawseef Faroque {Engineering student} TITLE: City of Lights LOCATION: Marina, Abu Dhabi. SETTING: Manual mode, camera mounted on tripod; seascape PURPOSE OF THE SHOT: I was trying to get this kind of shot for some time now. CAMERA MODEL: NIKON D90; at 18mm using Nikkor 18-105mm lens F-STOP/ APERTURE: f/3.5 ISO: 320 SHUTTER SPEED: 0.8 sec. TIP: Water and sky have a stunning affinity. The skyline of Abu Dhabi lights are reflected in the ocean to create an ever-changing interplay between colour, tone and light. A slow shutter speed records the moving water with a lovely ethereal, smoky quality. Keep the camera as still as possible; a tripod is essential and it›s important to include some static elements to contrast with the flowing water.

PHOTOGRAPHER: Peter Waters {Teacher} TITLE: Desert Landforms LOCATION: Sand dunes of Al Ain SETTING: Mid-afternoon with some cloud cover, late November. PURPOSE OF THE SHOT: To capture the amazing landforms of the desert. Using a compact camera with features like a panoramic option, which basically takes three separate regular photos and stitch them together. The results can be quite breathtaking as you can see from this photo. CAMERA MODEL: Kodak Z812 IS F-STOP/ APERTURE: 5.6 ISO: 70 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/1000 TIP: Look out for scenes that will let you crop the top and bottom of the image to produce a more dramatic panoramic composition.

PHOTOGRAPHER: Shabnas Muahmed {Computer Engineer} TITLE: The Fireflies of Jebel Hafeet LOCATION: Jebel Hafeet SETTING: Top of the mountain; camera set on manual focus to capture the major part of the street lights. PURPOSE OF THE SHOT: Fascinated by the beautiful view from the top, I couldn’t resist capturing the different shades of the sunset. CAMERA MODEL: Canon PowerShot A650 IS Zoom lens - 7.4 mm - 44.4 mm F-STOP/ APERTURE: F/2.8-4.8 ISO: 1600 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/15th sec. TIP: The best landscapes are rarely found at the side of the road. So be prepared to go for a trek in an effort to seek out interesting locations. Explore during the ‘golden hours’ around dawn and dusk – because that’s when the light is best and the landscapes come alive.

PHOTOGRAPHER: Siddhi Amey Naik {Researcher} TITLE: Colours in the structural world LOCATION: The Abu Dhabi Corniche (beach behind Heritage village) SETTING: Camera in hand. Daylight without flash. PURPOSE OF THE SHOT: It’s always good to see green spots, colourful sites and beautiful beaches in a place that is full of concrete structures. It gives peace to the mind that is used to seeing tall, huge structures all over the UAE. CAMERA MODEL: Nikon D90; at 25mm using Sigma 18-200mm lens F-STOP/ APERTURE: 9 ISO: 200 SHUTTER SPEED: 1/1000 TIP: Keep a point of interest in your foreground and keep it off-center according to the rule of thirds. This will give a good sense of depth.

of its own. Getting to know Bahareh’s poetry is getting to know Bahareh. Her poems live in the same world we do, yet different. A world more colourful, fantastical, and surreal and yet sometimes more grey, isolated and horrific. As the preparations began Sonya had a clear vision of the style she wanted to pursue,

FILMING POETRY Introducing Bahareh, the poet… Working in production in Abu Dhabi over the past few years has allowed me to be on various creative projects in the city. However, I must say I’ve never come across anything quite like this project... Video director Sonya Edelman asked me to join her on a more than unusual project. We were to create ‘“Poetry Videos”. Our talent: Bahareh. The first meeting was an intriguing one. It started off pleasantly enough with Bahareh warmly welcoming me into her beautiful home and feeding me the most delicious baklava from Iran. (Bahareh’s coffee table always offers the most amazing selection of treats). Sonya was there, and I was ready to learn more about the project. Bahareh brought some of her many colourful journals out, selected a poem and began to read. As the poem came to life, I was distracted by something quite unusual. Bahareh writes diagonally. She also doesn’t cross anything out. I had to ask, and Bahareh calmly replied,

“I’ve talked to another poet, she saw my notebooks and the way I write and she said ‘where do you take notes, where do you write?’ I said ‘notes? I just write”. It’s true. I have seen Bahareh write in her journals and the poetry does seem to just arrive. Each page of each journal has a complete poem, yet each journal also has an entire unique theme

“I’ve always liked the music video format, it’s like avant garde filmmaking. They really push boundaries conceptually, and are ripe with images that lend themselves to producing something highly visual and stylistic.” Out of Bahareh’s hundreds of poems, two were chosen: “The Invitation of the Mosque” and an untitled poem which we called “Beach”. The goal: to shoot two poetry videos in one day. We made our preparations and a couple of weeks later equipment and crew were assembled, and the big shoot came upon us.

DAWN AT THE BREAKWATER The light was perfect. It was clear that this was going to be a good day. This was Bahareh’s first time to be the talent on a set and we were all a bit worried about how she would react. There is nothing glamorous about filmmaking, and certainly not on the beach. A few hours went by with Bahareh stepping in and out of the water, walking across the sand, sitting, writing and standing , and then came Sonya’s call: ‘Great Bahareh, now let’s do it one more time!’ Our set didn’t offer any comforts yet Bahareh took direction naturally and all in her stride. “Bahareh had to be responsible for her own makeup and wardrobe, we would cut, she would fix herself – she was a great sport,” Sonya recalls. We wrapped up at the beach at 11am, but there were two more locations to go: Hamdan Street and Sheikh Zayed Mosque. The sunlight wouldn’t be right till about 3.00pm, and the sun was going to set by 6.30pm – so there were just three and a half hours to shoot in both locations including traveling time. It was going to be tight.

FILMING AT THE MOSQUE Bahareh arrived at the mosque looking exquisitely elegant in her stunning abaya. As for the rest of us – well let’s just say the ones provided didn’t have quite the same effect. “It was nice to have an all female crew, all of us in abayas, it added a certain vibe – but sometimes I tried to move around and get certain shots and I’d trip over – I don’t really know how to move in an abaya!” says Sonya. Filming in the mosque was an overwhelming experience. For Sonya there was literally too much to film: “You’re going to get great shots even if you don’t know how to use a camera!” Needless to say I had to keep an eye on the time. We loaded in and set off to Hamdan Street. With traffic gaining and sun setting, we really had to move it if we were going to get the shots we wanted.

SHOOTING ON HAMDAN STREET We arrived, but there was nowhere to park… it was peak time in the centre of Abu Dhabi and we were desperate to find a parking spot close to our destination. We didn’t, and it was time to run – three women, two cameras, tripods, lenses… and Bahareh, our poetess, all the while pulling her suitcase. We arrived at the busiest junction of the busiest street in the busiest part of the day. As everyone hurriedly set up Bahareh calmly did her hair, touched up her makeup and changed underneath her abaya, right there in the middle Hamdan Street! We were all in agreement – this was impressive talent. The effect that Sonya wanted to create was of Bahareh alone amidst a world whizzing past her. Not easy. Bahareh stood in the middle of the crossing with her eyes closed for a period of fifteen minutes. Cars beeped, pedestrians stared, even the police stopped to check our permits, and through it all Bahareh remained perfectly still. “She was just elsewhere, she was on a different plane; you know how creative people are able to do.” Says Sonya Bahareh describes the experience: “I just went on to another space. The space of why I was standing there and where the poetry came from. My different friends in the poems that I have encountered and the places that I have been to. And so it was very calming standing in this busy street. I recommend it for therapy.” (And she can: Bahareh has a PhD in Psychology). At 6:38pm the sun finally set on our 12 hour shoot day. We did it… it was a wrap! I’d never heard of poetry videos before, and it is clear that we are in new terrain. Yet after getting to know Bahareh and her poetry it dawned on me that it actually made complete sense. Bahareh’s world is multi-sensory; it is easy to connect with her inspiring honesty – her amazing source of truth. Indeed, we all probably have something interesting to say, the challenge lies in finding an interesting way to say it.

When I pretend to look I stop seeing. There are waves in the ocean with no sound. I breathe in, but with every breath out I release more uncertainty and more doubt. The breeze felt by the corpse, by the white bird and on my skin. The truth held in the breeze. The truth can be warm and beautiful. The breeze today is daunting but not frightening. It is the same sea I walked in last year. The same shore I marked with my foot steps with my dreams and doubts. But today with every step my foot goes in twice as deep as last year, but comes out with ease. What is the truth in my heavy step. Is it all that I have collected in my heart or all that I’ve released from the web of lies that gives me this weight. Still in search but now I feel each and every step, each and every breath.

Invitation to the Mosque I stepped out of myself and onto the street from a far I saw a mosque it was not prayer time but I felt The Call with closed eyes and open heart I started to breathe in The Call It was quiet so quiet in the gentle mist of the night but I know I heard Allah

FATHER’S DAY TREAT

LISTEN BORN THIS WAY.. is BORN! Good news, Little Monsters… the long wait for Lady Gaga’s new album, Born This Way is over. The writing of the album took place in 2010 during The Monster Ball Tour. Gaga describes the album as “much more vocally up to par with what I’ve always been capable of. It’s more electronic, but I have married a very theatrical vocal to it.

Sugar Daddy’s has a treat for all occasions, and they have one especially whipped up a Father’s Day delight. Brighten up daddy’s day and surprise him with these cute Father’s Day cupcakes. Either use a design kit or pick and design your own cupcake to show Daddy just how much you love him in your own way… Father’s day cupcake Dh16 Cupcake Design Kit: Dh25 -includes 1 cupcake and 2 frostings Tempo suggests you surprise your daddy with these hearty treats and place your order 24 hours in advance. Sugar Daddy is located in Khalidiyah Mall and Corniche or call them on 050-182 9075.

It’s like a giant musical-opus theater piece.” With her singles “Born this Way” and “Judas” constantly battling for the #1 spot on the Billboard singles charts, the tracks underscore the album’s mass appeal. The collection is a statement about equality and about ‘being yourself’, a description of Gaga’s unique persona and her ability to take personal issues and creatively inject them with infectious dance tempo! GaGa says she wrote these songs to live in a dance environment. What’s kind of interesting is that most of the dance tracks start off as ballads. Well little Monsters… plug in your earphones and get ready for some serious LSS.

ADI POWER PREDATOR Adidas reveals the adipower Predator®, a new football boot. Adidas informed us that the 2011 version of the iconic Predator® incorporates a re-engineered technology called ‘the Predator® Element’ which is the enabler for perfect ball handling. The Predator® element featured on the medial side of the boot is an injected silicon-rubber component welded onto the base material. The silicon rubber increases spin when striking the ball to ensure perfect ball control in all weather conditions. They explained that the boot also integrates the “Revolutionary Sprint Frame” that creates stability through geometry, and the Powerspine technology which minimises the energy loss during a shot through a reduction of the “kicking flex” in the forefoot area. Players such as Nani (Manchester United FC), Xavi (FC Barcelona), Van Persie (Arsenal FC), Kaká (Real Madrid FC) and Gerrard (Liverpool FC) have tested and contributed valuable input into the development of the adipower Predator®. Amr Amr: Normally the poll is up, and we forget about it, and Jessica finally decides.. Democracy takes place. Hahah!

Mohammed El-shishtawy: We are given a month to read a book. And novels are our favourites… it makes us think and get convinced by the “idea” that “idea” can change lives.

Wella Maria: At best, we are near virtual strangers to each other yet we come together with our passion for unearthing subplots, assassinating characters and connecting stories. In our meager hours each month we take a breather from the conundrum of corporate life here in the UAE to expand ourselves through discussing overarching themes in life. We come and go, but we leave no page unturned as we delve into discussions branched out to exhaustive measures. Mohammed Abu Esmail: We relate the book to the current society and it’s cultural issues and we pick out the values and principles from it. Mohammed El-shishtawy: The members are from all the corners of the world; they have different backgrounds and are from all walks of life, and that is something that enriches our meetings and gives our discussions a unique taste.

Jessica M: We meet at the end of each month. The members that attend the Meetup regularly decide on the book topic to be reviewed, and this is decided via a poll in our Meetup group shell. We read the book that has the most votes. We read mostly contemporary books and sometimes it’s the classics.

Jessica M: I see the group as a public forum to discuss our personal thoughts on the book subjects. These thoughts lead to other ideas and specific experiences. This is why I am so interested in the group. My past time is learning about others especially in a place and time of such rich cultural diversity.

The Message: We are a friendly English-language book club that meets in Abu Dhabi one evening each month to discuss a particular book and other subjects of interest. So, if you’re around the area, do come, there’s almost always something to talk about. Both male and female of all ages are encouraged to attend our book meetups.

DOC IN THE HOUSE

Dr.DMS

| A Doc from the Bronx

“FOR TONIGHT’S PERFORMANCE, THE OSCAR GOES TO...” “ I want to get high, So high...” - Cypress Hill, Black Sunday I hope that I never see you at work. Please don’t misunderstand my sentiment. My work generally comes at the expense of others. I work in an emergency room. So… you end up on my doorstep, with an... EMERGENCY. Right? Let me introduce you to a curious subspecies of patients, the “seekers.....” Some basic questions to start with.... Do you think your average emergency patient demands which doctor they want to see? Call the emergency room ahead of time to ask which doctors are working? Come to the hospital on a daily basis, maybe even several times in a single day? Or shift?? Demand a certain medication and at a specified dose, or even bargain with the physician, about how much medication they would like before they agree to leave? Would I BS about such things? Their numbers are plentiful. It’s hard to take these guys seriously after a while. The first time, you meet them, you get fooled…they have the pitch down. But once you spend enough time, you start to see the “regulars” and their patterns. Does it make any difference that I have computer access listing the entire clinic, ED visits, and all the medications and dates they have been prescribed?? None at all. Imagine the drama that ensues when the Doc walks into the room and calmly explains that this non-emergent, and that non essential medication will not be filled on this visit. All hell breaks loose.

They pose a mental, ethical, and psychological challenge to all they interact with. They come in with anything from no complaints, just “waltzing” into the ED, not in the least ill-appearing, to the most outlandish complaints with a method-actor’s performance to match. They exist everywhere. Their stories are amazingly similar despite continental and cultural differences. Already in North America, there is a huge prescription pill problem, which the media reports frequently. An estimated 20 percent of Americans have used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons.UAE... get ready. I never really imagined seeing this behavior here. How naïve! How pathetic! They can be the reason why YOU sometimes have to wait to be seen. Hear that yelling??? A certain story comes to mind: “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”. If you know the story, you know how it ends. Let’s see who pays me a visit tonight…

THE PALACES OF LIFE If you have been going through a ‘decluttering’, or doing any personal development work for that matter, you may feel it is time to take stock of where you are today and what you have become. Since all of clutter you have represents being ‘stuck in some area of life’, you may want to do a lot of exploring of issues. One helpful framework to do this is the increasingly popular ‘Feng Shui Bagua’; a simple grid of nine squares, or ‘palaces’, that is imagined to map onto a house, office or room, to allow you to visualize how the space corresponds to different areas of life. Other than being a great tool to manage space, the Bagua is great for tackling the different hats we wear in life.

EMPOWERMENT } Material wealth, influence FAME & FUTURE } Achievements, reputation RELATIONSHIPS } One-on-one, intimacy COMMUNITY } Society, family, friends HEALTH } Physical, mental, spiritual CREATIVITY } Children, creative projects WISDOM } Skills, knowledge, virtues SELF } Life path & profession HELPFUL PEOPLE } Support, travel, divinity Work with the areas that feel most important or cover all palaces. For any one palace ask yourself the following questions: • What is not working? • What is working? Make a list. • How am I contributing to what is working? How am I contributing to what is not working? Become conscious of what you think and do. • What would be the ideal scenario? Pretend you are a film director and create a script for your ideal situation for each palace (or generally). You may have some limitations in life, but in your mind, you are totally free; choose thoughts that feel good and you will create experiences that feel good. It is better to write them down; and be sure to use ‘I’ in the present tense. • How are my experiences reflected in my space and in the things I keep? Your space is a visual affirmation of your life. If you want joy, keep only what makes your heart sing.

Self-knowledge and understanding are empowering, so take time out for yourself and jot down a few notes in your journal.

BUILDING A TRANSNATIONAL MUSEUM A Big Job for the Abu Dhabi Guggenheim Three years from now the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be opening on Saadiyat island, another iconic building from Frank Gehry, an architect who specializes in them and who has a track record in designing Guggenheim Foundation museums in Bilbao, Spain. For now the Abu Dhabi version exists only in an artist’s image and as a model at the exhibition in Manarat Al Saadiyat. But putting up a building from the architect’s design is the easy part. Deciding what goes into the building and how the contents will reflect the region and the UAE has been occupying experts at the Guggenheim since the initial agreement was signed in 2006 between the Solomon Guggenheim Foundation and the Government of Abu Dhabi.

Focus Groups of International Experts Last month international art scholars came to Abu Dhabi for an intense two days of focus groups to work toward some conclusions about how the museum should be defined and how the collections might fit into the history of art in the world and in the region. On the third day some of the scholars met the public in a program billed as “The first in a series of talks and panel discussions exploring the vision and future programs of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.” It took place at Manarat Al Saadiyat which currently stands in for all the future museums of the future Cultural District including the Louvre, Sheikh Zayed, and Maritime as well as the Guggenheim.

Four Parts of Future Museum Nancy Spector, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, said that the Abu Dhabi collection is planned in four parts: acquisitions by the Abu Dhabi government for the permanent collection; long term loans from the Guggenheim Foundation from New York, Bilbao, Venice, or others in its family of museums; the Middle East collection including art by Emiratis; and works commissioned specially for the unique spaces of the Abu Dhabi Guggenheim. During the panel discussion, questions arose about what constitutes the Middle East and when contemporary art begins. Spector said that the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi would focus on the period from 1960, but Salwa Mikdadi, Head of Arts and Culture Program at the Emirates Foundation, said the entire 20th century should be represented to “provide a frame of reference for young people.”

Art Helps Develop Civil Society In general, Mikdata said, “the growth of civil society and the response in the arts is important in how we select works for the permanent collection” and emphasized that “serious research” is needed because there are “no degrees in Islamic art history” in the region. Dr. Borys Groys who teaches aesthetics and art history in Karlsruhe, Germany, as well as at New York University said that today “all cultures live in the same time” or what he called “transnational time,” meaning that “past and future co-exist in the same moment.” He noted the contradiction between what a museum does - which is to preserve and also to show. As a result, Groys explained, the museum “should be about process.”

Role of Emiratis and Arabs During the Q & A, several people in the audience asked about the role that Emirati art would play in the Guggenheim. They were told that the New York Guggenheim is planning an exhibition of Emirati art. They also learned that there won’t be “a section called Emirati art” in Abu Dhabi; works by Emiratis will be catalogued by themes or influences, not by nationality. H.R.H. Princess Wijdan Al-Hashemi of Jordan spoke about the promise and the problems ahead. “I see a great future provided that the Guggenheim gets out of its shell and interacts with Arab artists rather than just looks at its collection as something to join the past and the present.”

YANK IN THE SANDLAND

Randy Parker | Captain America in Exile

SONGKRAN It was the Thai New Year’s celebration recently and I had the fortune to attend this unique celebration. The event consists of spraying each other with water and smearing clay on one’s face. I had reservations about this initially but ended up really enjoying myself. Think a wet Mardi Gras; no one gets away dry. My mobile phone was a victim; it died from the water. Centuries ago, this was a solemn event held at Buddhist temples. Respect was paid to elders and resolutions were made for the new year. Now vehicles and pedestrians have to run a gauntlet of water bazookas and buckets. Garbage cans full of water are kept street side for ammunition, many with blocks of ice inside for added effect. Songkran celebrations occur mid-April and are strictly a daytime activity. Indeed, one can go out at night without fear of getting soaked. I felt 10 years old again… squirting people in the face with ice water will do that to you. Everyone was in a good mood and I got in the spirit of things.

I really enjoy the people and culture of Thailand. The country has a fantastic infrastructure and the people seem happy. I have been to Thailand three times now and I enjoy each visit more and more. There is a freedom there that I have seen nowhere else. The government wisely leaves the average person to live their lives as they see fit. The bottom line is I had a good time and I recommend Songkran in Thailand to all. A little piece of advice though: leave your good clothes and electronics at home! Manar Al Hinai | A Khaleeji girl who overthinks a lot and loves to write

My father always makes fun of me, especially when we’re about to leave a hotel at the end of our summer holiday. I’ve always been known as over-emotional. I’m the type of girl who would cry at romantic gestures, farewells, and weddings. When I like something I get emotionally attached… I give it my full attention and love, and it’s really hard for me when it’s time to leave. I graduated two years ago, and I still feel nostalgic about Leeds, England, and about my university life. I know that the places aren’t going anywhere, and I can always go back and visit, but I still long for everything I left. What I’m trying to say is that I’m not a big cheerleader for change especially when something’s so perfect in my eyes. What I tend to overlook is that change is always for the better. There’s always something good coming out of it, especially when you look at it positively. To elaborate, if I hadn’t graduated from England I wouldn’t have had the time to design my fashion collection, or thought about

becoming a columnist. If I hadn’t left my old middle school, then I wouldn’t have met the most amazing friends I could ever have.

Change depends on how we perceive it. It is up to us to turn everything we face in our lives, into a positive experience, with the hope and the belief that the best is yet to come, and that we deserve it all! If all we did is kept looking back thinking that the best laid in the past, then we would never experience the joy of the present, and the hidden surprises of the future. At this point I can’t help but remember Thomas Edison’s profound secret to success. He willingly accepted failure and change. To him, failure, and most importantly change, provided valuable information to correct the course of his life, and come up with better inventions. Follow me on twitter @manar_alhinai

COGNITIVE REALITIES It is not often that one comes across an exhibition of artworks from great Indian Masters in the UAE. But, on 23rd May such an exhibition opened at Art Select, Jumeirah Emirates Towers in Dubai. The exhibition titled ‘Cognitive Realities’ will feature not only Indian masters but also Emirati masters. The exhibition consists of art from Indian masters like FN Souza, Anjolie Ela Menon, B Prabha, Laxman Gaud and Charan Sharma amongst many others. Four famous Emirati masters, namely Jalal Luqman, Mattar bin Lahej, Fatma Lootah and Mohammed al Qassab are exhibiting alongside their Indian counterparts. It would be impossible to talk about all the artists exhibiting in my column, so I am going to share little snippets about a few of them. The exhibiting artists are artists with great intrigue and pizazz. I have followed their works since I was young. Anjolie Ela Menon is one such artist and her work left an indelible mark on my creative psyche. She is one of India’s leading contemporary female artists. She works with oils and mosaics and is well known for her female figures. Her artworks often has conspicuous iconography of black crows, hidden figures and empty chairs. When I first saw one of her paintings, I remember trying to figure out, what could crows possibly be doing with knitting needles and a ball of wool, next to an old woman. I would gaze at her works to try and decipher them. The late F N Souza was famous for his deliberately eclectic expressionist works and his remark ‘the society must adapt to the artist’. In recent years, his paintings have been sold for over million dollars.

EXHIBITION DATES FOR PUBLIC 24 May - 24 June | Art Select at Level 10 | Jumeirah Emirates Towers | Dubai

Charan Sharma’s major quality comprises a constant search for the truth. A well-established and much respected name in the world of Indian Contemporary Art, Charan was born into a family of artists in a small township in Mewar, Rajasthan and attained glorious heights as a painter of unusual themes – dumps of pebbles, dilapidated Havelis of yore that housed Rajput nobility and puppets and toys, and now images of Buddha and the monks. Amongst the Emirati artists, Mattar bin Lahej is a self taught artist who is popular for his unique brush stroke technique which gives the impression of flowing ribbons surrounding the subject of his paintings. Fatma Lootah, lives and paints in Verona, but, exhibits all over the world. She loves to paint with her hands and her feet, in order to feel the creation with her whole being. Her paintings portray her ‘inner fire’. This exhibition promises to be a delight for collectors as well as art enthusiasts.

‘PRISM’ FOR PERSONAL PEFORMANCE MAPPING Nicola Ablett | A UAE based PRISM and HR Consultant who spoke at a Tamakkan seminar

1. WHAT IS PRISM?

DELIVER A SPEECH WITH CONFIDENCE } Ziad Samad

This is for you out there who have never given a speech in your life. It is scary at first, akin to venturing to the deep side of the pool after you have just learned to swim. But once you have done it there is nothing like the sense of achievement it gives you. • • • • • • • •

• •

First and foremost, you should have a thorough idea of what you want to talk about. Have the speech written down and practice it in front of a small audience or at least a mirror. If the speech is impromptu, make a rough plan with an introduction, body and conclusion. Appearance is important. Once you are presentable you are halfway there. However make sure you are comfortable with what you are wearing. Talk to a few people from the audience. You will have a better idea of the kind of people who are in front of you. Experts prefer to have keywords from their speech written on cards. This is in place of having the entire speech in front of you which will often give you the tendency to read from it Take a deep breath with your hand on your stomach as you contract and expand. This will help calm your nerves. Non-verbal communication is as important as what you say. So maintain a steady posture. If you have a podium in front don›t lean on it too much. Also try not to wave your hands around too much. Before starting the speech, acknowledge the audience with a smile and greetings. Also if the mass of upturned faces intimidate you, concentrate on a space without people. Or imagine everyone wearing clown suits. Find one or two friendly faces in the crowd and pay more attention to them. This helps you feel less distanced from the audience. Believe what you say and deliver it with conviction and passion. The audience will know it if you stop concentrating on the words and the thread of your speech. Lastly, learn from orators and TV anchors. Their ability to hold your attention comes from years of training. Everything from facial movements to the way they emphasize certain words makes you want to listen to what they have to say. “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be selfevident that all men are created equal.”

A history-defining speech, delivered on 28 August 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC by Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have A Dream”

PRISM Personal Performance Mapping is a sophisticated, online, neuroscience-based instrument specifically designed to identify the behavioural preferences that directly relate to personal relationships and work performance. PRISM provides three distinct profiles, or ‘maps’, of a person’s behaviour: how he or she naturally prefers to behave; the extent to which he or she feels it necessary to modify that behaviour on occasions to achieve key objectives, and the overall pattern of behaviour that he or she tends to use for most of the time. In addition to the eight behaviour dimension maps, PRISM generates a 20-page personalised report which identifies and measures 26 key aspects of work preference. PRISM also provides an analysis of a person’s Emotional Intelligence (EQ) preferences and a summary of his or her ‘big five’ personality traits, one of the most widely accepted and used models of personality.

2. WHO IS PRISM GOOD FOR? Assessment Centres, Staff Development, Recruitment, Coaching, 360 Feedback, Performance Management, Staffing Adverts, Greater Customer Awareness, Mentoring, Performance Appraisals, Conflict Management, Improved Sales, Performance, Team Benchmarks and performance, Organizational behaviour

3. WHAT ARE THE TANGIBLE BENEFITS? Rather than abstract, theoretical concepts, PRISM measures the things that people like doing and the behavioural characteristics related to those things. Research shows that people whose interests match their occupations find greater job satisfaction, are more productive and have higher levels of motivation. These outcomes can increase the individual’s work performance and enhance the chances of career success. Indeed, a Harvard Business Review study has shown that staff turnover almost doubles when no ‘job suitability match’ has been undertaken. Moreover, the study also concluded that 80% of staff turnover can be attributed to mistakes made during the employee selection and recruitment process. Neuroscience – which has seen most of its major discoveries made in the last 10-15 years – has proved that the brain is remarkably elastic in terms of its capacity for change. PRISM focuses, not only on the brain’s functional architecture, but also on how the neural networks interact with brain chemicals such as glutamate, dopamine, noradrenaline, serotonin, testosterone and oestrogen to create behaviour.

4. WHERE IS IT IN USE? UK, USA, UAE, India, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, South America. Many international brands are using the profiles themselves and also for their leadership programmes.

5. WHEN WAS IT INTRODUCED TO THE UAE, AND HOW HAS THE UPTAKE BEEN? It was introduced in Spring 2009, and there have been 19 practitioners to date locally including ADICOE, ADJD, ATIC, NEXT LEVEL, BES and CAPITA GLOBAL.

THE FACEBOOK ADDICTION

by BrandMoxie

CELEBRITY ENDORSEMENTS A DEFINITE YES OR AN ABSOLUTE NO? A client came to us recently with a specific request. He wanted a ‘celebrity endorsement’ and he wanted Nancy Ajram. “Why endorsement and why Nancy Ajram?’ The answer: ‘she’s very pretty and my children like her.” Once we conducted a strategy evaluation of business and marketing goals, along the brand’s characteristics, its values and promise, the client realised that the money was far better invested on another marketing vehicle. Does that mean that celebrity endorsements don’t work? Depends… Celebrity endorsements do work well sometimes. And sometimes they are a disaster to the brand. Any decision should consider the short and long term impact on the brand and on tangible returns. (So none of the ‘she’s awfully pretty’ or ‘our Chairman used to date Mariah Carey’s cousin’ stuff). Nike is one brand that has successfully managed to use celebrity endorsement to build its brand and to catapult it to the leadership position within a product category. A good example is Nike with Michael Jordan, which spilled over into the development of product and brand variants based on the celebrity’s name and reputation. Nike also leveraged a successful association with Tiger Woods to achieve rapid entry into the golf industry, even sticking by the celebrity during his tumultuous months. So how can a company decide whether or not to use a celebrity? Here are a few pointers to keep in mind: ATTRACTIVENESS – This is not just about physical appearance of the celebrity but the energy he or she projects, such as confidence, lifestyle choices and fitness/ healthiness levels. EMPATHY – This relates to the likeability of the celebrity and how able he or she is to transfer the positive qualities of the brand. What are the personable traits of the celebrity and how are these characteristics compatible with the qualities of the brand? CREDIBILITY – Perhaps most contentious of the three principles: does the celebrity reflect the ‘expertise’ position to enhance the brand, and how trustworthy and believable is he or she? How about the celebrity’s private life, is there a chance that the celebrity’s personal reputation might compromise the brand? Bottom line, if you decide on a celebrity endorsement as a brand builder, be sure there is absolute consistency between the endorser, the endorsement and your brand.

An excerpt from a report on Facebook usage in the GCC, by Abu Dhabi University students Eman Abdulkarem, Marwa Suleiman, Khuzama Sa’ad, Reham Yusuf and Tasabeih Emad

Did you know that there are five million Facebook users in the Gulf Cooperation Council region, and that the UAE has the highest number of Facebook users: 2,135,960 out of a population of 4,707,307 – that’s about 45 percent! We ran a survey to identify various indicators that assess trends and factors relating to Facebook usage. We interviewed people in our university and our communities to see the trends relating to Facebook usage. We found that 54% of our survey sampling ( ages 15 to 19 years) uses Facebook on a daily basis. Out of the total, 43% of the respondents log in more than five times a day to check their Facebook account and 41% spend more than three hours a day on Facebook. These results clearly indicate to us not only that Facebook is an important part in many people’s lives, but that it may in fact be an addiction. We believe there could be negative effects from Facebook. First of all, Facebook wastes time and distracts students from doing their academic work. For instance, if students have to do online research, they automatically log onto their Facebook accounts, and waste their time playing and chatting (we do that too) and time passes quickly without any work being accomplished. Another effect is that Facebook encourages teenagers to build unhealthy relationships between genders (that’s according to researchers Doug Fodeman and Marje Monroe) and the negligent sharing of their personal information (name, location, picture etc) and that is risky and dangerous. Third, Facebook isolates teenagers and makes them build an imaginary life and friends whom they communicate with online only, and this definitely shrinks their social life, and reduces their interaction with their family and the people around them. Another critical effect is that Facebook may lead to obesity among kids, because of the many hours they spend without moving or doing any physical activity. We know that Facebook is a social network used by people all over the world; it can be used to find old friends, to job-hunt, and to read or write and publish work. Facebook is a lot of fun, but we have to learn to use it more responsibly.
