FROM THE EDITOR Hello Abu Dhabi, Inspiration is all around us, and it comes in all sizes and shapes. All we need is to be attuned, and keep our receptors open... The Social Network movie delivered a whopper of inspiration, that in the words of an 18 year old movie goer: “just makes you want to stop everything and go set up a business.” Our cover story on ‘Dubizzlers’ Sim and JC is about two inspired guys who had a dream, set up the business, and now have one the most popular information portals in the UAE. Two nice guys you’ll want to meet in our magazine and also at the upcoming Tamakkan entrepreneurship forum on the 29th at Al Mamoura Auditorium (see ad in this issue). Just like inspiration, businesses also come in all sizes and shapes, and we feature two other (very different) kinds of entrepreneurs: Vijay who builds palaces for stages, and Ezra who builds stages for palaces. Both are driven, creative and passionate. Not unlike Abu Dhabi’s own Barbara, a good friend and a true inspiration, who dropped everything easy and comfortable, towards fulfilling a dream helping people in Zambia! Here’s to ideas, passions and dreams... stay attuned, Abu Dhabi.

SPACE Dear Tempo,
Dear Tempo
The Yasalam events on the beach have been very entertaining. My one comment was that there was just so much happening at different venues around town that it got confusing planning our family’s schedule of who would do what, when and where. One idea would be to have a couple of marquee boards in (for next time if anyone’s listening) is to have marquee boards in prominent locations in town showing the events of the day.
I enjoy reading tempo magazine very much. Whenever I got to Al Wahda Mall, I always make sure to pick up a Tempo magazine. I find that it is really different from all the other magazines.

Walls
Poetry by Lean Abadi
The smell of paint Lingers on the room wallsBeclouding their cracks. Coating their raunchy black scars, It conceals actualityIn spite of its inability to ease, To pacify. Portraits suspended; They are like bandages fastened on, Bequeathing identity to vacant gaps. The walls grow oldTimeworn. Nails create piercesEnslaving structures. Numb, the shallow surfaces standWith efforts to kill gravity.

vox pop “If you are given a rare opportunity to address the United Nations assembly. What would you say?” That’s the question Tempo asked some of our readers recently to find out the issues that mean a lot to them.....
Shamona Ishrat Khan 24, Indian Aspiring entrepreneur
If given a slot to address the UN, I would question the superpowers on the works of their own peace building organizations, which have been set up to meet the needs of humanity around the world, and accuse them of partiality towards only serving the benefits and needs of whatever makes them remain a superpowers. America needs to be put on a hot seat ...why is it that WHO, UN and other organizations provide food and living to many parts of Africa whereas the US is not condemning the innocent Palestinians who are fighting for their own land? Why is there cold treatment given to countries who want to have their own opinion? Why is it that America pretends to be like one of those spoiled school kids who excel in everything in class but spends more time in bringing down their competitors, having a tiff for no reason with whoever seems to be good enough to stand in par with them? That is ”injustice”! Every rising sun has a downfall, so once in power people should not forget that they exist within the world and we are all in it together...a little modesty would be nice! We are one!
As my country has been through a war and fell apart due to war. I would talk about the efficiency of UN and how much they did or didn’t help the people, not only in that particular war but in general. I would discuss advantages and disadvantages of the presence of the UN in some certain countries. I would try to find the solutions within UN which would really help the people in trouble, caught by a war or any other problem irrespective of their nationality, religion, skin colour . (Isn’t impartiality actually the UN’s aim). I highly respect United Nations as a very important organization, but at the same time my opinion is that the people who can find themselves in a war are not protected enough. This is because the UN send their peace missions in order to provide peace and in those cases should always make sure that all the people be treated the same, as the name of the organization itself is the United Nations.
Marija Stanojevic 26, Serbia Property Consultant
Hence, my answer would be that I would talk about the wars all over the world, UN efficiency and the way people of different nationalities and religions are treated.
Sirene Husseini 23, Lebanon/ Nigeria Production Coordinator
If I was given the chance to address the United Nations I would be talking about the child soldiers in Uganda! It pinches me that their innocent childhood is being robbed in this brutal manner. Children all over the world are supposed to have a positive and uplifting childhood-then only can we expect something out of the world. 6
Nicole Simoes 18, UK/ India Student
Before the significance of the UN fades, I’d like to ask the UN to prove to us that there is hope in living in a world free from terrorism, wars and famine. If it can help to save millions from starvation, sickness and lawlessness - and at least give people homes.
Tempo November 15 - 30, 2010
vox pop I am not really sure about pointing out this subject at the United Nations but I will certainly talk about volunteering for a good cause. We all want to change the world; we all want the wars and hatred to stop. It’s easy to say that but no easy to do it. Not everybody has the courage to go to war zones and treat the innocent wounded civilians, nor the fortitude to distribute food in countries destroyed by a natural disaster....however almost everybody has the time to help out even if it’s for an hour. There are so many organizations, schools and groups that rely on people’s help! For once in your life, forget about shopping for branded bags, fancy glasses or phones and think about how you can lend a hand! Soffia Diop 29, Senegalese Office Manager
How great is it to sell books for an hour knowing that all the benefits will be distributed to the lessfortunate! How blissful it is to sweat in the UAE sun for hours to give a free school year’s tuition to a street child! The sensation is unlike any other! Winston Churchill once said: ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give’ The New Year is just around the corner...add volunteering your 2011 resolution list.
I would convince all the world leaders to erase their borders so that our children can inherit a world where imaginary lines do not create visas, passports, wars, famine, import duties and internet proxies... and so all of us can live as one celebrating our differences and culture. Who needs the World Cup when you got Champion’s League anyway? Tahir Abba 26, USA Engineer
I would address the UN on the topic of womens rights. The importance of educating women worldwide on their personal rights and freedoms and helping them to receive the same opportunities for work and education as the male population. Monique Louw 26, South African Security
I ‘d like to figure out what the UN can truly do for people and if they can make the world a better place. Why does the UN have little power to force anyone to do anything? What needs to be done to have the UN go from being incapable of helping nations to actually making positive gains on the nations it helps? Steven C Price 29, USA Government Work

Tempo came across Zade Dirani and we felt the need to share him with you, our readers. The honey eyed boy from Jordan can weaken any girl to her knees with his looks and music. But his true calling is inspiring global peace through the language of music....
Zade us a rising young star who writes from the heart and plays with absolute passion. Inspired by the natural beauty of his homeland, the composer, pianist and producer all rolled into one creates epic cinematic music that unites and inspires cultures world wide. “When I close my eyes and start playing the piano, I immediately travel back to the beautiful rolling hills and narrow roads that take me down to the Jordan River and then way up to Jerusalem. A certain spirituality and biblical sacredness is cast over that area. When I was a boy living in Jordan, that place was my earliest inspiration. Today it is the image of what peace represents to me and is also a part of all my activities”, says Zade. Zade launched The Young Composer for Peace Award in response to his reaction to world events. The September 11 attacks on the US deeply affected him and made him feel that “terrorism has sabotaged” his religion. From then Zade began efforts to promote peace with his music. He launched The Young Composer for Peace Award through his eponymous foundation, The Zade 10
Foundation. The music maestro is inviting young talents to submit a three to eight minute pieces that reflects their cultural heritage and desire for peace between nations. All submissions are due in November 2010 and the winner will receive $ 5,000 and have his or her piece recorded by Zade. The Zade Foundation is aimed at helping young musicians share with the world a deeper understanding of their cultures by offering them a unique opportunity to expand their roles from musicians to proactive peace builders and future community leaders. The Young Composer for Peace Award is Zade’s latest endeavor in which he hopes to build “a legacy that will live on forever.” To participate in The Young Composer for Peace Award,

Thai Express The Scene: The ambience is very casual, and the place is bright, neat and tidy. The dining area starts small, but opens up as you round a corner. Since it’s situated in the mall foodcourt, you can expect the “stares” from passerbys
free. The good thing is they ask every customer their spicetolerance level but perhaps they should also inquire if the customer has any nut allergies? Yes? No? What we’ve tried: The tom yum is usually the barometer of Thai restaurant quality.. But this was just spicy enough for someone to get over a cold. Phad Med Mamuang. The amount of chicken was generous, and the oriental stir-fry had a great blend of hot and sweet flavors. Yum! We highly recommend the Pad Thai stir fried rice noodles with chicken and prawns. The consistency of the noodles were great, the sweet and sour flavors blended well..spice was no stranger to these dishes. Overall Thai Express is a great deal, although the portion size ought to be a bit larger. It isn’t not entirely authentic, but it’s the kind of is consistent generic Thai food that isn’t going to cost you your entire salary. So, if you’re in a mood for Thai while shopping in the mall, drop by and give this one a try.

Pharaoh’s Village - Kushari Imagine mixing into a single dish the following: pasta, rice, lentil, chick peas, onions and garlic and then adding to this chili sauce. The idea doesn’t sound enticing, but once you’ve tried this Egyptian favorite, you’ll be calling out ‘kushari !!!” We stumbled across this small alfresco resto called “Pharaoh’s Village” for lunch and found Kushari undoubtedly the best decision we made!

Suggested by a friend, I was eager to try out “Kushari”. To elaborate: it is a base of rice, with layers of brown lentils, chickpeas, macaroni, and a topping of Egyptian garlic and vinegar and spicy tomato sauce (salsa), garnished with fried onions. Getting the order is quite fun. Give the receipt and the Kushari man grabs a bowl, and scoops a little of each ingredient into the bowl and sends it to your table. Each Kushari dish takes about five seconds to prepare (of course, all the ingredients are cooked). As the man scoops he knocks his metal spoon against the sides of the bowls making the Kushari symphony that you won’t hear elsewhere. Delicious, inexpensive, healthy and fills up the stomach. 11 15

PEOPLE METER People Meter is an offbeat way to learn more about people in our community, who come from different backgrounds, cultures and walks of life. The thing you most love about living in the UAE? I think it’s the coolest thing that the downtown area just comes alive when the sun goes down. People are everywhere and the city just heaves with humanity. The thing you most hate about living in the UAE? The heat here is just oppressive in the summertime. I come from Houston, Texas and we have some hot summers there, but nothing like this. You are given a million dirhams what are you most likely to do with it? I would do what ever I can to make my Mom and my Father and Mother-in-law as comfortable as possible now that they are in their later years.
April Gray Nationality: American
You are having guests for dinner at your home, what are you likely to serve? If I wanted to impress them, I would make a standing rib roast. It’s rib eye for the guests and bones for my dogs - everyone wins! If it’s a family gettogether, it’s turkey and Dressing. I make that really well! Your favourite line from a song? Right now it’s “There’s never a hero in a battle
The thing you most love about living in the UAE? That it’s a peaceful and clean city.
the paths that we have chosen. But every now and then, I’m reminded (Miss You by Sweetbox)
The thing you most hate about living in the UAE? Definitely the lack of parking space.
Your favourite line from a movie?
You are given a million dirhams what are you most likely to do with it? I spend 30 percent traveling across some part of the world with my family and 70 percent as investment for the future You are having guests for dinner at your home, what are you likely to serve? It depends on their nationalities. Your favourite line from a song? For a song: I know we can’t escape from 18
of egos” from Wild West Show by Big and Rich.. Your favourite line from a movie? As far as movies go - “If I have to Lie, steal cheat or kill, as God is my witness, I will never be hungry again” from Gone with the Wind. What inspires you most in Abu Dhabi? Architecture. The buildings here can be so interesting. I find the use of materials and the way they are shaped to be very beautiful. What is you pet peeve living in this city? It has got to be the driving experience! I’m amazed by the total disregard for safety by drivers and the road rage can get very stressful. Describe a “fun” day for you in Abu Dhabi? I really love to photograph and my best days have been spent just meandering along the roads, stopping at points of interest (to me) to get the perfect shot. Maybe popping into the shops in the City Centre and spending some shopping time at Marina Mall. Ending the evening by sitting quietly at the Corniche looking over the harbor.
“Ten seconds, you won’t believe what’s gonna happen” Lee Christmas from “The Expendables” What inspires you most in Abu Dhabi? The fact it’s a peaceful city! What is you pet peeve living in this city? Again, the parking thing. Describe a “fun” day for you in Abu Dhabi? Catching up with friends during off days at the Corniche. Having coffee at Starbucks or Columbiano.

Vijay Chowdhary is an artist who designs elaborate and fantastic stage shows and temples. He has multiple talents and enjoys multitasking. His works are expressive and untempered.Tempo hunted down Vijay between his running around and chatted with him....
Why did you decide to become an artist? Becoming an artist was not by choice, I believe I was born to do it. Could you tell us more about your background and lifestyle as an artist? I always enjoy my work, so as an artist I make sure that I don’t lose my touch with my inspiration and waste my talent on commercial endeavors. I make sure that I constantly occupy myself with projects or brainstorm to create new ideas.
“I believe in my creativity and hard work. Success for me is to provide complete satisfaction to whoever looks at my art.”
How do you manage to work on many projects at the same time? By profession I’m a salesmen, but art is work is my hobby, and that’s what I love to spend my personal time doing. Tell us in brief about your work and your definition of success? I believe in my creativity and hard work. Success for me is to provide complete satisfaction to whoever looks at my art. Have you been inspired by anything or anyone? Well, obviously there are many inspirations behind every creation. I have many things that inspire me but the ones that are truly meaningful are person. Unfortunately I cannot discuss them with you. (Smiling) Sorry about that. Where do you get your ideas from? I believe ideas come from one’s general experiences of life. Usually I grab my ideas from my daily routine and my surroundings. I think life around always presents the gift of creativity and design...you just have to find it.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
By Dipti Bhatia
Abu Dhabi To Zambia With Barbara Many people in Abu Dhabi know Barbara Roberts as relentless volunteer, a champion of social causes, and a great friend. Here Tempo catches up with Barbara as she talks about her preparation for her special mission to help the Zambian people.
What is your mission to Zambia about?
What made you decide to go on this mission?
A few months back, we attended a ‘Getting into Gear’ conference held by Operation Mobilisation (OM). This is a organsiation that facilitates people and families that want to work in the mission field. The conference gave us a lot of information and confirmation that we were doing the right thing at this point in our lives. My family decided to step out in our faith and take up a God given opportunity to work in the mission field. We have received support and backing from our church here in Abu Dhabi.
Life should always be about challenge and it is an important aspect of our faith that each day should be lived according to God’s plan. We arrived in Abu Dhabi for a two year commitment that soon stretched to five years. As a family we had all reached a point where we felt that we had done all we needed to do in Abu Dhabi and it was time for us to move on. New Year is always a good time to think of fresh starts so we began to explore new options in January 2010.
We shall be volunteering in Zambia where we will be based with the OM team in Kabwe, to carry out relief and development work in this much needed communities. There are many ways that people of all creeds and faiths can do and there are organisations are available out there to suit everyone’s criteria. We are following a tried and tested mission route. Stepping out in faith and selling all our goods has been less of an ordeal for us than perhaps people imagine. We are in control, but God leads the way and so we agreed to go on mission, and at first without really knowing where we should go and what we should do. As time has unfolded, doors have opened for us to go to Zambia and we realised that we are best gifted to do the work out there. 22
How are you preparing for your mission? We have visited the base in Kabwe, Zambia for a reconnaissance trip and to get a feel for what we shall be doing over the year and where we shall be living. We also looked at what we need to start doing to prepare ourselves. In terms of language, English is commonly spoken however the dialect for the Kabwe region is Bemba. Sample phrases are... Hello- Muli Shani I’m fine-Ndifye bwino Please-Mukawi Goodbye-Shalanipo The locals have three meals a day, all of them bulked out with ‘shima,’ commonly made from leftovers of corn maize and looks like over sized dumplings. Shima has no taste and has zero nutritional value but it really does fill you up! It is usually served with some boiled cabbage and beans or some salted fish in sauce. There is a Tempo November 15 - 30, 2010
MAKING A DIFFERENCE local market which sells a small amount of fruit and dried fish. A super market is available but has limited western range of food and whatever’s available is sold at over inflated prices. The currency give us millionaire status! The local money is Kwacha and there are only notes: 1 pound sterling is 1250 kwacha One orange is 1000 kwacha One can of coke 4500 kwacha For housing we will need to rent a local house ourselves. Houses are small cement one level builds with about three rooms to live in. The average rent per month is $500. We will need to pay water and electric as well. Schools for the children is a big consideration. There’s a small school junior school for missionary and expat children, but as our children will be doing home schooling. The base has a number of families who arrived recently and so it is looking to recruit a home school teacher to free up the parents to work in the relief and development fields. Is there any specific reason that you chose to do this? We did not choose this; God choose us and we were in the right place to seize a God given opportunity.
The charity also runs a very basic school for the children of these shanty towns, as it is a world held view that education can be the first way to break the next generation out of the poverty cycle. There will also be a chance to help out with people’s medical and social needs. We will of course be offering people hope by demonstrating to them how we work with God in our own life. Do you think you mission will be successful? It is not for us to be successful; it is simply for us to do God’s will. What difference do you think this would make to the people living in Zambia? Unless you have lost hope and are poverty stricken it is difficult to know what will make a real difference. We need to be there in relationship with the people to know what difference we can make. Perhaps the change will be seen over a period of time. Maybe not in Zambia’s current generation, but in the ones to come What message do you intend to send to our readers, through this story? God’s heart goes out to the poor and needy, we are encouraged to share his love and goodness with others. When we give faithfully, we reap the joy of sharing and God pours out his choicest blessing on us.
Tell us about the activities you plan to carry out in Zambia? We shall be working in the rural areas of Zambia which houses the biggest shanty town in Zambia. People here are poverty stricken by circumstance but still hold great hope for a way out. By working with a charity over there, we hope to empower people to break out of the poverty trap. The people there already do this by teaching life skills, sports skills, IT skills, teaching training to name but a few outreach opportunities.

Young Americans Bring Dubizzle Classifieds PORTAL to the Middle East Dubizzle is the largest classified advertising operation in the Middle East. In five years they have grown from a staff of themselves to 40. This month they began expansion outside of the UAE into Egypt and Saudi Arabia. On November 29 at the Al Mamoura Auditorium the featured entrepreneurs will be Sim Whately and JC Butler, the founders and managers of Dubizzle. To find out more than the story below can tell about how they did it and where they are going, come to Tamakkan.
24
Sim Whately and JC Butler came to Dubai in the summer of 2005 looking for jobs. They had met in Belgium earlier and became friends while doing sales training and selling media. Both 24-year old Americans had worked in Kuwait and Whately also in Jordan and had heard what people used to hear about Dubai, that the streets - if not paved with gold - were filled with opportunity.
set up a job and property listing. “We poured all our money into it,” Butler recalled, and “shared a rented room with bunk beds.”
But it wasn’t easy to find a job because there were no listings. Butler says, “information was so difficult to find,” and from that observation came the decision to

Because “we had no technical background,” they hired someone to develop the site. It took six weeks, longer than promised, and went live on August 11, 2005. Most of their initial capital of $12,000 went into the site.

TAmakkan handing out cards with photos. Google’s Ad Words was part of it, but they estimate 80-90 percent was word of mouth. “As long as you stay afloat and create a community,” Whately explained, “you can succeed.” They knew, “monetization would come later” and always reinvested in the business. Two years later they hired the first employee, a salesman, and then three developers, starting the growth that would lead to the current 40 team members. In the photo, only about half are present, typical of the active work style required of everyone at Dubizzle. The photos were taken in the company’s new offices on the 30th floor of Al Shatha Tower in Dubai Media City where Dubizzle is registered in the free zone. Whately and Butler have come a long way since the bunk beds. Butler said Dubizzle is “very profitable” in the UAE. However, the money goes back into the business with expansion in the region. After Egypt and Saudi Arabia this month, Dubizzle looks to the rest of the GCC, then the Levant and North Africa. The reason for
leaving Lebanon, Syria, and the Maghreb for the end is language. Dubizzle is in Arabic in all its markets. Once the French version is ready, expansion will go into the markets where three languages, not just two, are needed. And that may not be the end of either expansion or languages. The founders agree that “maybe Asia” is a future destination for Dubizzle.

The InTerview
by Ellaine Fatima photos by Ezra
Tempo met up with one of the most interesting talents to emerge from the UAE’s expatriate community. Manila-born designer Ezra Santos, who is currently based in Dubai, talks about how he has come full circle in his career, and why he is one of the major champions of Filipino fashion and design.
EZRA COUTURE is on an endearing quest to produce the finest haute. His silhouettes speak of luxury and are imbued with a delectable sense of style. He doesn’t aspire to be an avant-garde at the cutting edge of fashion. His is a quest for the classic. Fashion that reflects himself. His creative reflects the essence of style and a fastidious attention to great detail.
“At an early age.. when I was in grade school, I used to draw a lot and was so fascinated with the ball gown that I used to see on the black and white movies. That’s where my passion in making luxurious dresses started.
“My business came about after nearly a decade’s stint at Arushi where I opened my own shop in 2004. It was a calculated career move, and I haven’t looked back since. I faced stiff competition in this largely cosmopolitan city, but my intention was to hone my skills every step of the way. I took additional fashion courses at different places, including the prestigious Central St. Martins in London. always make designs from my heart and choose inspirations that touch my soul. I do not have ready-made ideas and never launch a project until the urge inspires me.
“My clients are mostly Arab women, mainly from royal families; some are public figures and many are celebrities. I really love designing for Arab women because they appreciate what I do for them and they are passionate about luxury. “My design are inspirations that range from Erte and early Christian Dior. I love Erte’s gloriously extravagant costumes in contrast to early Christian Dior’s sumptuous simplicity. I’d like to think that my creations are an intermingling of the two. When I do a collection it has to have a storyline. Just like a movie, it has to be dramatic and full of life. 26

Ezra Santos holds court at his ultra plush atelier, EZRA, located at Wasl Road in Dubai.
“Everybody has to get married. There’s still a big celebration to be held somewhere and there are always people ready to tie the knot. This industry is one that has not been affected by the crisis, and for that I thank God.” “I travel abroad to become motivated. The museums and architectures there and other places that I visit really help me a lot in gathering ideas and in stimulating my mind to come up with the creative concepts to start my collections.
“My collection had different stages. ‘In the Beginning’ is my creativity infused with crystal elements CRYSTALIZED – Swarovski Elements. “Afrique de Or” is the inspiration taken from the African Goddess Nubian Princess and the palettes of colour utilized were mostly off white, gold and black.
“Every day is a challenge. Meeting clients’ needs and expectations is one of the most challenging things for me as a designer. Day after day, we encounter new people with new needs and wants, with different perspectives and personalities. I do believe that every customer has to be treated fairly and with great care. It is true that customers are always right, therefore every difficult client that we encounter is properly dealt with, and every difficult situation is solved in a nice way. I see to it that no matter how harsh the clients are, we still have to show them great respect and treat them well so that they go home smiling and satisfied. Every satisfied customer makes me feel good about my job.
“This year has been a good and busy year for me. I did my first gala show here, then I participated in the New York Couture Fashion Week and then in Style Arabia. By the end of the coming next year, we’re hoping to do a prêt-a-porter line for the New York market and hopefully this will come to pass. 27

After I stock my weekly groceries in the fridge, I take the empty plastic bags, roll each bag into a ball and place it in one of those IKEA bag holders. The plastic bags that I collect is recycled; as bin liners or reused to carry stuff around. I have been doing this for a few years now. It is my way to reduce my burden on planet earth. I am proud of my little weekly endeavours, and recently when an opportunity rose to contribute further to the environment, I took it up happily. The chance to contribute came in the form of an opportunity to auction my art for the Green Abu Dhabi campaign organised by Suhail Jashnmal, an initiative of the Indian Embassy and the Higher Colleges of Technology. I gave three of my favourite pieces of work, each 30” by 30” and priced at Dh 4000 to the silent Community Art Auction. Suhail asked me if I was sure I wanted to give such large artworks, as the minimum bid price was only Dh 800. There is always a fear in silent auctions that the bids do not go beyond the minimum price mentioned, but I was sure of what I was doing. I did not want anyone to bid money for the sake of buying art in order to help a cause. I wanted them to feel good about getting a bargain as well as contributing to the cause. Many other artists like myself were contributing to the auction. Mohammad Kanoo and Felicia Agmyren donated photographs, Salwa Zeidan donated large canvas prints, Suhail Jashnmal himself donated sketches. In the UAE, there is a rising awareness about health and environmental issues and I see many artists, designers, and everyday people participating in causes. Some contribute by raising awareness and some by donating their creations. At the recent Dubai Fashion Week, designers Tanya Sarne, Megan Park and Meeta Mulchandani joined hands to raise

awareness for arthritis. Their show sent out a strong message of encouragement and support to those battling the disease. October was the National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and we saw Pink Polo in Abu Dhabi dedicated to the cause. Dubai based Zeina Sultani, the creator of the shoes and clothes brand Ines is one such person who impressed me with her dedication to the cause. One of the Pink Polo Raffle gifts was her beautiful ‘Vie En Rose’ ballerina shoes. Zeina had created the range of ‘Vie En Rose’ ballerinas for Breast Cancer Awareness and sale proceeds went to the May Jallad foundation. When I asked her why she chose ‘Breast Cancer’ as a cause, she replied ‘I am well acquainted with the May Jallad foundation, and our donations helps others who cannot pay for breast cancer treatments. It’s about social responsibility, and I am satisfied to know that there are real women getting relief from the money sent to them’. As a creator, I know how much dedication, sweat, and time goes in creating every little piece of work. To donate a work to a charity or give it away for a piece of you without expecting remuneration. Like Zeina and the others, I too am a proud member of this growing artistic fraternity which is part of the movement to raise awareness for causes that are close to our hearts. Causes come in all forms, whether they are raising awareness for arthritis, assisting breast cancer patients, or trying to help out with environmental issues. If you are reading this and agree, then do join a cause, run a marathon, or support those who are already supporting others. The little actions you take today has great power to transform someone’s tomorrow. Go ahead and make that difference.

LAND OF SMILES
I had some time off so I decided to go to Thailand for two weeks. Why Thailand? It is relatively inexpensive, beautiful and the people are some of the nicest in the world.I stayed in Thailand all this time for what three days in Europe would have cost me. My holiday started in Bangkok. I spent four days sampling the restaurants and cafes in the city center. The food was tasty and healthy and I discovered Thais eat about five times a day. There are street vendors cooking on the sidewalks and the aroma is intoxicating. Bangkok just plain smells good! After dinner there are many lounges to visit for an apertif but be warned, the friendly staff will try to cajole the farang (Thai for foreigner) to buying a round of libations for them. Just say no - they are OK with that. Walking around Bangkok’s streets is a sensory delight. In addition to the aromas from the street vendors, there is plenty of greenery along the way. I was never bothered by beggars or thugs. Everyone gets along. One warning is that the sidewalks are very uneven and shop entrances can be a half meter above grade level so watch your step!
One high point I have to mention is a couple of proprietors I met in their Koh Chang beachside bistro. The place is called Thor’s Palace Bar & Restaurant and is literally located right on White Sands Beach. It is run by Thor and his brother Mal. More gracious hosts I have never met. Google it. So now I am back to real life in the UAE but I still miss Thailand. I really recommend this country for a getaway. It is safe, the citizens are cordial and a nice hotel room is had for just Dh100. Just do it!! I know I will be back.
See more of Randy’s photos on your mobile phone now. Download www.gettag.mobi to scan this tag on your mobile.
Bangkok also has an excellent mass transit system called the BTS. It runs through the backbone of the city and taxis are never far away from the main stations. I went to a large temple in the city one day and for this inexperienced traveller here it was easy and fast. The next few days I spent in Koh Chang. This is an island in the Southeast Gulf of Thailand a six hour bus trip from Bangkok. A one hour ferry boat ride gets you from the mainland to the mountainous island. It was a beautful place with rain forests and great beaches. Unfortunately it was cloudy and windy the whole time I was there so I missed out on the suntan and snorkling but I got to feed some elephants and took a thorough tour of the island. The terrain was stunning and the roads on the island were equally as thrilling as well. 29
