In Side the Ethiopian
Christmas By AklileTsige
If Western-style December hijinks are not enough, why not head for the Ethiopian cities and towns, and join the country’s January Christmas celebration-and take in a trekking holiday while you are at it? Ethiopia, one of the oldest nations in Africa, still follows the ancient Julian calendar, and celebrates Christmas on January 7. Commonly known as Ganna in the Amharic language, this’s a celebration of Christ’s birth. Like in any other Ethiopian holidays, people get dressed in white traditional garment called ‘Netela’-a thin white cotton piece of cloth with brightly colored stripes across the ends. Around the time of Ganna, men and boys play a traditional game known as Ganna, which is played with a curved stick and a round wooden ball, a bit like field hockey. This game is played because according to local tradition, the biblical shepherds were playing this game while tending their flocks on the night Jesus was born. Gone are those days when people used to cut trees particularly fir trees, spruce trees, and cedar trees, and bring them to 04

the house and decorating them with lights, ornaments and sweets. But nowadays, we won’t find any of these trees around, rather we’re compelled to buy artificial plastic trees with twinkling lights. For Ethiopians this holiday time is marked by good food, Church services, time spent with family and having local drinks known as ‘tela’ and ‘tej’. Part of the Ganna celebration usually involves purchasing a goat or cow, and slaughtering it for stew. Ethiopians eat traditional dishes of ‘wat’ which is a spicy thick stew
that contains meat, lentils, and vegetables. These stews are served family style on top of a huge piece of injera, which is spongy, flat, pancake-like traditional bread. These days, smaller pieces of injera are rolled up on the sides and used as an edible spoon to scoop up the ‘wat’. The domestic counters of Addis Ababa Bole International Airport are heaving with passengers going to Lalibela, a town in Northern Ethiopia which is home to what many
No visit to Ethiopia would be complete without a foray into one of its many local markets. Vibrant, colorful and defiantly resistant to Westernized mall culture, these local markets still form the economic and, arguably, social mainstay of Ethiopian village and small-town life, providing an opportunity for subsistence farmers and local artisans to sell, buy or trade goods.

Eve or a few days before this holiday see the hustle and bustle of people at various markets, malls and shops. Down town, young people are busy shopping for Christmas gifts. Addis appears to be blossomed in becoming truly cosmopolitan, if judged by the tradition of x-mas. From a visitor’s perspective, the best buys for local souvenirs include handicrafts such as crosses, hand-weaved cotton “gabbi” and “shemma”, clothes and scarves, more idiosyncratic items like goat skin, paintings and carvings
Africa’s largest open air market packed with foodstuffs, crafts and many more goods. Here it is possible to purchase anything you desire from cheap electronics to exotic fruits, from artificial X-mas trees and the accessories twinkling lights, gifts and sweets to kids apparels and shoes as well as a wide-range of household utensils. Piazza, at the heart of the city, appears to be the most accessible and convenient center of Christmas business for visitors who want to window shop or buy gift articles such as gold and silver rings, bracelets, necklaces and other X-mas related items, including Xmas cards, cookies, kids toys, eye-glasses and modern apparels . The famous holiday business venue_ the Addis Ababa Exhibition Center is one of the mostdesirable trade fair spots in the city. It’s also viewed as the hub of all entertainment , consumer and cultural activities, and is reputed events venue for regional and global exhibiting companies. Days before the holiday the center is usually crammed with shoppers buying anything they want. From gift wrapping to Christmas trees, modern apparels, shoes and bed sheets, to jewels. “live” Santa accompanied by a deafening sound of holiday music coming out of megaphones at the main gates so that they could captivate the attention of any passers-by. What’s common during such festive days is the announcement of “Crazy Sale” or “Big Discount” promotion by some businesses. People usually tempted by the advertisementand buy goods for a price they think is a real discount. Nevertheless, many question the reality of the big sale. Do businesses truly and fairly motivate buyers to visit their malls and shops? Here are five ideas, according to Susan Ward November 27, 2018, for gifting your customers that will help increase Christmas sales and possibly enhance customer loyalty, too. 1.Provide a free Christmas gift wrapping program. 2.Give a Christmas gift with each purchase. 3.Provide free shipping or deliver. 4.Give customers a discount. 5.Give customers gift cards.

The Ethiopian Christmas season, therefore, should not just be about increasing sales. It’s also about connecting with people around us, giving thanks and celebrating. It’s about stretching hands to the needy, visiting people who’rebed-ridden, search for someone to accompany them during agonizing moments. Happy Ethiopian Christmas!

Volkswagen is set to install assembly plant in Ethiopia By: Mekonnen Hailu Volkswagen known internationally as the Volkswagen Group, is a German multinational automotive manufacturing company headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. Volkswagen was founded in 1937, to manufacture the car which would become known as the Beetle. In the early 1930s, the German auto industry was still largely composed of luxury models, and the average German could rarely afford anything more than a motorcycle. As a result, only one German out of 50 owned a car. Seeking a potential new market, some car makers began independent “people’s car” projects the Mercedes, Adler Auto Bahn, Steyr 55 and Hanomag, among others.
Volkswagen Group has maintained the largest market share in Europe for over two decades. The company ranked sixth in the 2017 Fortune Global 500 list of the world’s largest companies.
The company’s production grew rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s, and in 1965 it acquired Auto Union, which subsequently produced the first post-war Audi models. VW also has two major jointventures in China (FAWVolkswagen and SAIC Volkswagen). The company’s operations in China have grown rapidly in the past decades with the country becoming its largest market. Ethiopia has experienced rapid economic growth since 2005 with real Gross Domestic Products (GDP) growth rate of 10.5 percent per annum compared to 5 percent for Sub-Saharan Africa between 2005 to 2017. The country has huge potential in various investment areas including in manufacturing, agriculture and service sectors. Manufacturing is the engine of economic growth and structural transformation. Ethiopia is one of the few African
countries that have formulated and implemented a full-fledged industrial development strategy since early 2000s. The growth of the manufacturing sector within industry is essential to build national technological capacity, industrial capability, technology progress, productivity and capital accumulation. Nowadays, companies from European countries, Middle East, North America, Asia and African countries have been working mostly in the area of manufacturing sector. Consequently, “Volkswagen will start assembling cars in Ethiopia in the near future,” said Gerd Muller, German Development Cooperation Minister, who is in Addis Ababa since last week. He made the statement this afternoon
at the meeting with Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance and Economic Cooperation Dr. Abraham Tekeste. Thus, MoU was signed by Dr. Abraham Tekeste and Dr. Muller to collaborate on multiple areas. The cooperation focuses on capacity development for Ethiopia’s effort of industrialization, including strengthening engineering technology applicable in multiple sectors, ranging from agriculture to manufacturing industries. The government of German has been one of the major development partners of Ethiopia, especially in capacity building education through its different development agencies GIZ, which used to be called GTZ, among others. Minister Gerd Muller has also indicated that Deutsche Telecom of Germany is interested to purchase shares in Ehio Telecom, which is the largest subscriber in Africa.

The
importance of targeted marketing By Dagmawi Tessema
In the current socio/ economic climate it has
become imperative for business to have a crystal clear picture of the market place and assess which if any part of the consumer pool wants or needs to buy their products and services.A business model made without consumer identification is doomed from the beginning. It is believed this is one of the key aspects that are keeping our local existing business in shackles and also keeping new business on the brink of survival. This is where targeted marketing comes into play. It’s commonly said “when you start a business, know who you are selling to”. Well that’s pretty much what target marketing is all about. For example a Company that produces children’s toys can have no illusions about its consumer identity. Whereas a Company producing let say foods and beverages may have to go the distance in their marketing endeavors so as to find out which segment of the market would consider buying their products. Target marketing can be a game changer in developing profileof targeted audience which can be made into customer base The first step of target marketing is all about the identity of your consumer. Categorizing your customer base so you will know which groups use should focus on; where you should spend your valuable time and resources; when you are promoting your product and services. This could be more 10
Abyssinia Business Nework ታህሳስ 2011 / Dec 2018
beneficial for smaller businesses that are not ready to spend a fortune on marketing and promotion. Not only that, but also the theme of your marketing strategy could be more tailored to the section of the market that is more likely to end up being a customer. This step is referred to as segmentation. There are different ways to segment a market. Some examples such as demography (age, marital status, gender) behavioralattributes (brand loyalty...), geographic (country, city, region) psychographic (personality, life style, values) are the main ones. The next step is targeting. After having a better idea about the sections in the market you want to focus on do basic research on the other company’s and service providers that are established in the same groups or sections you have also identified. It’s imperative to know exactly from where the needs of your identified group are being met. A detailed information about their price range and the satisfaction levels of their customers. This will help you compete better in sections where there is room to Co-exist and even surpass other business and shift your focus elsewhere in cases that show the targeted group already being well serviced both in prices and quality. This step will ensure you are not wasting time and resources on places or section that show no promise of customer base.In addition you will know everything about your completion which won’t hurt either. After identifying your segment and your target audience; the final step in this model is Positioning, which basically is you positioning your business in a manner best suited for your targeted market. Customizing your products and services to the competitionin preference of your potential market; key factors like pricing, product quality, promotional scale, distribution capacity and quality will have to be managed to appeal to your targeted market. The motivation that might derive your potential customers to buy your products and services has to be identified and acted on in this final step. This marketing techniques illustrated above have proven to be successful in enriching business all around the globe, existing in different economical and socio/political climates. Especially when the currenteconomic climate is trying to nurture entrepreneurial platform for those who dare to venture into owing their own business, imploring effective business and not relaying on the so called old school business management techniques is essential for improved investment returns and also for paving the road to becoming global competitors.

Perks of Privatization in Ethiopia Contributed by Gedion G. Jalata, CEO, Center of Excellence International Consult, the viewpoints are his own and not of the consultancy firm The Ethiopian government declared to undertake partial and complete privatization on 5th June 2018. While high reforms are being undertaken, it is still in question on whether the financial sector will be open for foreign investors or not. It describes that railway service, sugar plants, industrial parks, hotels and other manufacturing enterprises could be partially or fully owned by the private sector. Precisely, several public enterprises such as large and medium scale industries, small firms operating in the retail trade sector, agriculture enterprises, hotels and tourist attractions have been transferred to the private sector. While at the same time, the government is to retain stakes in EthioTelecom, Ethiopian Airlines, hydropower plants and maritime transport enterprises, and transfer the rest to domestic and foreign investors. Such move indeed is made to boost and modernize the country’s economy.
currency shortage, which has resulted in depletion of foreign currency reserve, the shortcoming of state-owned enterprises in undertaking corporate reforms; promoting the private sector development in the economic sector and the increasing debt threshold of the country. The government subsequently established the Ethiopian Privatization Agency by law by privatizing public enterprises of different size and operating in different economic sectors. Even though the modifications are underway in recent times, the journey towards privatization commenced in 2002. Its breaking point was when the Ethiopian government flung the Privatization Program in accordance with Proclamation No.87/1994. With the verdict already being made by accommodating the concept of privatization in Ethiopia, the public and economic elites have been to and against the adopting the methodology. The supportive views towards privatization are based on the advantages of accepting the idea of ownership of various institutes and companies by the private sector. Proponent of privatization argue that private enterprises are occupied for making profits, they are more eager to cut costs therefore it is reckoned to be efficient than the public sector. privatization also helps to generate revenue required for financing development activities undertaken
The underlying factors that obliged a change includes the persistent foreign 18 Abyssinia Business Nework ታህሳስ 2011 / Dec 2018
by the government. This fact has also been supported by some research on privatized state manufacturing enterprises - beverage, textile and leather sectors- in Ethiopia indicates. During the first Growth & Transformation Plan (GTPI), an ownership of total of 32 public enterprise were transferee to private entities either in the form of direct selling and partial share transfer. The privatization of National Tobacco Enterprise, Assela malt factory and National Alcohol that has brought in hundreds millions of dollars to the government can be a showcase. On the contrary, many opponents have made fierce debates against privatization. They conclude that it leads to less accountability and deterioration in services which will emanate distortion in efficiency. A failed remark would be the experience of Kenyan Airway. Being privatized in 1992 it has been a high loss for the past four years. On the converse, the government of Kenya has been trying to bailout the airlines. In this regard, the government has been trying to buy more shares from the airlines to regain its former control, as reported by the Air Transport World (ATW), a 50-year-old magazine and Financial Times. Despite the fact that foes of privatization argue on the fictional need of privatization. Ethiopia can create a level ground for fair and
free competition among private-public firms. Even though Public enterprises acquires autonomy, there will be rational challenge encountered by both sides to determine their existence through the market forces. There are concerns on the vary of execution cause by lack of experience on the private sector. There are risks where the relocation might deteriorate the conditions of privatized industries if the new owners and their managers did not have a prior experience or adequate information on how to effectively manage privatized enterprises by taking into account their peculiar conditions. Profit maximization being their principal motive, private firms may lay off workers, whose social cost may not be bearable in developing countries like Ethiopia. Profit maximization being their principal motive, private firms may lay off workers, whose social cost may not be bearable in developing countries like Ethiopia. As the Ethiopian private sector, despite showing a considerable growth in size, is still weak and fragile, there would be many gaps if government withdraws from and leaves the economy to private firms. The role of the state should not be limited to the provision of certain economic and social infrastructures. The state should be able to invest in areas where the private sector is incapable of partaking due to fear of long gestation periods, huge capital requirements and less profitable. It should also maintain large ventures under its disposal, the privatization of which might cause social shocks in the process of restructuring. This could create additional production capacity and employment opportunities in the economy. In this context, a cautious move towards privatization
journey is timely and pertinent for Ethiopia. Countries where the state governs the market have been very successful. It is also important to recall the global financial crisis of 2007 and the associated series state bailout measures by the developed countries including the US, which brought back the debate on the role of the state in economic development abundantly. The instance that most illustrates productive outcome of governed markets is he economic rise of South East Asian countries. Naming Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan known as the ‘four tigers’ were economies in which the states had ‘governed markets’ to ensure high levels of accumulation, technology absorption and conquest of foreign markets. The economic rise of as global economic force also reminds us the role of the state in the development process.
This is mainly since the developmental State trajectory of African countries was reversed by the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) of the 1970s and 1980s except for Botswana and Mauritius. SAP has managed to continue their developmental state trajectory and helped them to be among the middle income countries.
The overhead point of view on the subject indicates that now is the certain time to study the impact of past privatization in the country in order to draw an important lesson before we embark the new initiative on privatization.
to harness local, bottom-up problem solving and opportunity-creating energies; and embraces a wide range of governance modalities and mechanisms action, to achieve a national development vision” (2009:15). Therefore, the role of a strong democratic developmental state, rare bird in the governance terrain, is to bring inclusive economic transformation and equity. This quality is boldly underlined priorities in both SDGs and Agenda 2063’s ten-year plan. This factors indicate that its inevitable for African countries.
However, as to my personal observation, I figure that it cautious and pragmatic approach adopted by the government may not result in the weakening and ultimate demise of developmental state as it happened in many African countries.
Ethiopia’s trend still indicates that the government still in the driver seat. The state will retain the majority share in the strategic sector of the economy such as the airlines, telecom, and energy generation among others. To sum up, it is worthy quoting UNCTAD report: “what is required is a new [democratic] developmental State that is adapted to the challenges of the twenty-first century; creates and renews the microfoundations of democratic practice

Womanhood in Ethiopia
By Tsigereda Zewudu
“When you educate a man you educate an individual, but when you educate a woman you educate the whole family.”
T
he basic unit of society is a woman as she makes a family, family makes a home and homes make a society. She is the inherent part of our society and an important element of our humanity. She plays her roles with great responsibilities in upbringing of a healthy solid society. She is believed to have her aspiration, abilities and qualities as a man does have and it is also agreed that she should have the opportunities to develop her faculties and to express them according to her own choice. The very first and best school of child is its mother’s lap. From behavioral to health education, women have their hands in. It’s a women who teaches how to behave, how to speak and how to deal with different classes of people. A good healthy society
doesn’t automatically emerge on its own and stands firm but it needs to be emerged and for its emergence women play a pivotal role. Since she plays roles as a mother, a sister, a daughter, a wife, she can help the society in various ways. She can engage in social activities and work for the betterment of the society. These all indicates women are the main contributors in building up a strong society. We all know that without education, no development is possible likewise we should never think that a society would come into existence without the contribution of women. The role of women in society has been greatly overseen in the last few decades but now it is coming to a more positive perspective. In the early days women were seen only
20 Abyssinia Business Nework ታህሳስ 2011 / Dec 2018
as wives who were intended to cook, clean, and take care of the kids. They were not even allowed to vote while men took care of having jobs and paying any bills that had to be paid. Although women in much of the world have gained significant legal rights, many people believe that women still do not have equality with men. This is evident at home, at their workplace, and in society in general. The traditional role of man was to work and make money, which would be used by all in the household. The traditional role of the women was to stay at home, take care of the children, clean the house, and cook. Because society has always associated money with power, the person bringing home the money had the power. The problem is that there are still more
getting Image job offers for men and it is still easier for a man to climb the social ladder. A man can have both a family and a successful career whereas women want to fulfill themselves as professionals have to sacrifice their personal life in most cases or, if they choose to have a family as well, they are sometimes regarded as bad mothers because they don’t allocate 24 hours a day to raising their children.
dedicated their entire life to raising the children and being a good wife, get divorced or, even worse, became widows. In such situations many of them find it impossible to find a place to work and have to live in more or less poverty. Without women a man wouldn’t be a man at all and would not have the comfort of having someone by his side through the rough and bad times.
Taking these considerations into account, it is still a problem for many women to assert themselves, irrespective of their educational background. Furthermore, many women choose to lead an unhappy life for fear that they wouldn’t be able to find a job, because many employers would still choose to employ a man over a woman. There are unfortunate cases when women who have
Fortunately, more women have made vast improvements in their lifestyles in the past few decades from holding positions in governments to simple things like getting a job and supporting themselves. We cannot forget that a women’s life is a lot more complicated than a man’s life. A woman has to take care of her own personal life and if she is a mother, she also has to take care of
her children’s life. Women will always be important to society because they bring a sense of love, and emotion, and for this reason a least, society should start considering their situation more carefully. All in all, there is a lot be done regarding to increasing the role of women in a society. Women are not only for home - making and child – rearing but they must also be given chance to put their hands a little forward in building up of a good solid society. A good solid society is a good indication of development. In order for a society to be a pure society, both men and women should think, dress and behave in ways that allow pure thoughts and actions to dominate the way of life and create a social climate conducive to the achievement of the real goal of life.

Employment Relationship and Contract of Employment
By: Yonas Mulatu Investment and Immigration in Ethiopia Ethiopia has been one of the fastest growing economies in the world for the last ten years. The economic growth was matched by growing foreign direct investment (FDI) into the country. Growth in FDI has also meant increasing number of expatriates residing in Ethiopia. In this piece, we will discuss the immigration rules and regulations governing foreign residence in Ethiopia. The two basic laws that govern immigration matters in Ethiopia are: The Immigration Proclamation No. 354/2004 (“Proclamation”) and the Council of Ministers Immigration Regulation No. 114/2004. The Main Department for Immigration and Nationality Affairs (“Office”) is the key regulatory body that implements these laws. The Office has enacted directives and circulars that further govern the immigration of foreign nationals. One of the basic requirements for a foreigner to enter into Ethiopia is a valid Visa, with the exception of Kenya and Djibouti, that have a special agreement with Ethiopia. There are different types of visas such as Tourist Visa, Business Visa, Diplomatic Visas etc. All investors seeking to do business in Ethiopia must enter the country with a valid Business Visa.
As part of facilitating Foreign Investment and offering one stop shop services, the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) provides visa services by liaising with the Office. The key documents that must be presented to the EIC for business visa applications are:

Increased investment in security, soaring Kenya’s tourism By Josephine Wawira
clashes, and/or terrorist threats often lead to tourists scare and travel advisories from major tourism markets. Apart from notable bans that Kenya has previously received from the UK and the US among others, Uganda is currently suffering a blow as The United States and Canada issue travel warnings against the country, following ongoing protests over Bobi Wine’s arrest. As a result, we experience a significant drop in tourism revenues; as one of the major contributors to Kenya’s GDP; which is projected to rebound to 6% by end of 2018 and 7% by 2019 from a low of 4.9% in 2017. Towards putting in place strategies that would cushion the industry
Kenya’s tourism industry is increasingly driving exports and providing foreign exchange, earning the country tourism expenditures of about 1.2 billion US Dollars in 2017. This represented a 20% increase from approximately 989 million US Dollars in 2016, according to a hospitality report by Jumia Travel. This improving sector performance is being facilitated by various factors, among them a steady macroeconomic environment, improved budgetary allocations by the government, increased air connectivity within Africa, infrastructural developments like The Standard Gauge Railway, and enhanced security in the country. This article focuses on the later element. Image by Olivier Le Moal Security concerns in any country can weigh a great deal on the tourism industry; as instances including political tensions, tribal 26 Abyssinia Business Nework ታህሳስ 2011 / Dec 2018

from any turbulence, the Kenyan government has in recent years increasingly fortified security mechanisms. In a report by the Oxford Business Group, security upgrades were a major government focus in the FY 2015/2016 budget, with a surge in military and police funding of $2.3bn up from $2bn during the FY 2014/15. The same report further notes that the government also worked on measures to improve Kenya’s tourism image internationally, by increasing the budgetary allocation to the Ministry of Tourism by 91%, to Ksh10.7bn ($104.4m) in the FY 2015/2016. Out of this, Ksh4.5bn ($43.9m) was channeled into marketing Kenya’s tourism products, with a full recovery in performance expected by the end of 2018.
The impact of these efforts are already paying off. We are seeing less reported cases of insecurity that pose a threat to the growth of the industry; and an impressive drop in travel advisories into major tourist destinations in the country. Notably, as a result of the increased stability, Kenya received record 1.4 million international tourists in 2017, up from 1.3 million in the previous year. Respectively, domestic tourists spent approximately 4 million bed nights in 2017, growing their expenditure with 16%. It is therefore assertive to state that the industry still holds massive potential for better performance in coming years, if among other factors, security is highly maintained not only in Kenya but also across the region.

Drones: Bouncing Business
A few years back, in Ethiopia, a permit from the Office of Government Communications Affairs used to be secured through paying $50 for photography and $100 for the drone. In addition, a company or a person who secured the permit had to recalibrate, prior to each drone flight, the drone compass due to the volcanic activity and the resultant differences in the magnetic field.

My cell phone was ringing ……..I picked it up and said, “Hello! Dear” “Please come to me! I’m at Bole Airport” said someone from the other endwith sobbing voice. She was my cousin. I had to move… It was painful to see this strong and industrious girl like this. All I could do was embrace her and let the torrent of her tears soak through my shirt. I could feel her clench, her fists, not knowing whether to be mad or to give up hope all together. I could hear her silently screaming, suffocating with each breath she took holding onto her pride. I ran my fingers through her hair, time and time again, in an attempt to calm the silent war within her mind. After minutes of silence she angrily told me the drone her brother had sent her from abroad was seized by the airport custom authority. Unfortunately, there was nothing I could help her except sharing the pain. Lucky are those who have intentionally or unknowingly managed to import or bring with them various types of drones into Ethiopia until the concerned custom office was given strict order from the Federal Government to ban the entry of this new technology. While these people have been enjoying the application and uses of drone secretly others are shedding tears standing at concerned office doors, demanding the release of their drones mainly from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport Customs and Security. 28 Abyssinia Business Nework ታህሳስ 2011 / Dec 2018
History has it that It was on February 4, 2002, the CIA first used an unmanned predator drone in a targeted killing. The strike was in Pakita Province in Afghanistan, near the city of Khost, and the intended target was Osama bin Laden, or at least someone in the CIA had thought so. As we are probably aware, many individual entrepreneurs, small business and large companies are putting robotic aircraft to good use. Non-military drones have become an inexpensive and accessible way to help accomplish many tasks. To most people, a drone is one of the two very different kinds of pilotless aircraft: a toy or a weapon. But once you have a flying camera, there are lots of things you can do with it. Journalism, filming, aerial photography, shipping, disaster management, search and rescue, structural safety inspections, wildlife monitoring, border patrol and storm tracking or forecasting as well as agricultural precision are the main applications and uses of drones different private and state institutions worldwide make to enhance their businesses.
As a script writer for some documentary film production companies, I have witnessed that producers use drones to shoot top views of mountains, tall buildings and wide sceneries. Some of the lucky ones also make money by renting their drones to other film production companies.
of the law, adding that the endorsement of the law is very crucial as it significantly contributes to the various development endeavors being undertaken across the country.
No one is there to control or monitor the movement of these drones; no permission is requested to operate them; nobody knows who to ask for permission, and many don’t know whether it requires law, regulations or a sort of license, and the lucky ones have continued to take advantage of their escaped Drones. This time around, custom and security authority officials pointed their fingers to two government institutions: the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority/ECAA/ and Information Network Security Agency /INSA/ as responsible organs for the permission. Nevertheless, both institutions seem to have confusion as to which party is responsible for the entry permitsince there is no clear legal framework on the subject. Laws on the use of drone have not yet been endorsedin Ethiopia despite the growing demand through time. It’s obvious that the use of drones in different socio-economic activities in developing countries like ours is of paramount importance. Officials in the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority have recently disclosed that they are striving hard to the realization
The increased use of drones for civilian applications has presented many countries with regulatory challenges. Such challenges include the need to ensure that drones are operated safely, without harming public and national security, and in a way that would protect areas of natural, historical, or natural importance. Assume that drone regulation has now been effected in Ethiopia and you bought a drone. You’re probably chomping at the bit to get the battery charged and take it out for the first test flight. But before you do, you need to be aware of the rules and regulations, which I believe;ECAA would put in place for flying drones in Ethiopia soon. And you should also be aware of your rights and rights of those around you. Imagine a drone flying over the roofs at your village and delivering small packages, breads, letters, medicines, beverages, and most importantly, sugar and edible oil at short distances. Imagine a drone with thermal sensors quickly discovering the location of lost persons especially at night or in challenging terrain. Can you imagine how pleasant and wonderful life would be? Look up the sky! No drone around? Have some patience! Abyssinia Business Nework ታህሳስ 2011 / Dec 2018
