Brothers and Friends of Acacia,

A concept that has gained widespread attention in recent years is “minimum viable product”. Popularized in Silicon Valley, a minimum viable product is, “that version of a new product which allows a team to collect the maximum amount of validated learning about customers with the least amount of effort.” (Eric Ries, The Lean Startup)

An example of minimum viable product being applied can be found in the story of the genesis of Netflix. Founder Reed Hastings was motivated by being charged $40 by his local Blockbuster Video store for losing a VHS tape (yes, undergrads, there used to be thousands of stores which carried movies on VHS or DVD, and was one of the only ways to watch movies).

As a computer scientist, he envisioned a future where consumers would be able to stream movies reliably and on-demand via the internet, but he knew that it would take time for the internet to be fast enough. In the interim, he thought he might be able to get started using DVDs, sent through the mail.

Jumping back to today, and looking at what a behemoth Netflix has become, one might think that Hastings sat down and developed an extremely detailed strategy, including multiple areas for research and development, and financial models to project future profits. However, his next step was much more simple. He sent himself a single CD through the mail.

As the story is relayed in the recent book, Effortless, by Greg McKeown, “Hastings …looked for the ridiculously simple first step that would inform then whether they should take a second step or just walk away. Mailing that single disk turned out to be the simplest, most obvious way to set their immense idea in motion.” When the CD arrived intact, Hastings knew the idea might work.

The Acacia Headquarters Staff embraces this concept and approach to the projects that we work on. An example is the rollout of the new “Pathway to Membership” pledge program. While the program and documentation provided to chapters at Conclave are complete and comprehensive in terms of providing a framework to prepare a pledge to be initiated, we fully expect that we will receive valuable feedback from chapters during this year. We will then adjust as

it makes sense, improving the program every year going forward.

In other words, we weren’t intending to put out a program that would stay the same for decades, just because we took the time to put the first edition of the program out there. We’re saying to our chapters and chapter advisors, “Hey, here’s a new program to consider and take for a test drive. We’d just ask that you share feedback as it occurs to you.”

This concept of minimum viability can be applied to life for our members!

Consider Seven Days of Service. This annual week exemplifying our motto of Human Service could be planned for months. You could set aside a large budget and time to do very involved events – but that could seem very intimidating if it’s your chapter’s first year and could result in not doing anything at all because it all seems to be too big.

If it’s the first year your chapter is taking part, brothers could simply volunteer at a soup kitchen every day of the week. That is something that you know you can do!

Everything starts somewhere. The largest streaming service started with a single CD sent through the mail. And your chapter’s legacy of Human Service can begin with a single small, but meaningful, event.

Don’t aim for perfection, but progress. Use the resources you have with you and better resources will appear along the way.

As men of action, let’s remember to keep things simple, take action on what is most important to us and our chapters, and make adjustments as we learn more.

One final note, you can view the final results of the 2018 Strategic Plan at acacia.info/ asp-18-data . More information about the 2022 plan will be coming soon!

T E R N A T I O N A L P R E S I D E N T

In March of 2020, I was onboard the Norwegian Gem, escaping the typical cold and snowy Canadian winter, cruising around the Caribbean. Every night on board, while indulging at the ship’s pub, the television would broadcast all of the developments surrounding COVID. When the cruise left New York City, it was still largely a virus that was relegated to the other side of the world. When the cruise returned, it was an extremely different story. Shortly after returning, our past International President, Scott Meyer, convened a call of the Council to determine the impact of this on the fraternity and it’s operations across North America. While we were forced to shift to a virtual Conclave, we still couldn’t be certain how we could possibly retain members and grow as a fraternity given our ‘new normal’.

Fortunately, owing to an extremely agile headquarters staff and extremely responsive membership, we are one of the few fraternities that grew during the pandemic. While we have unfortunately lost some chapters, we have strengthened our rolls to our highest level in over 25 years!

In the upcoming biennium, as approved by Conclave, Acacia will seek to continue to present itself as the finest fraternal opportunity for undergraduates and alumni alike. We have developed our Pathway to Membership program (a standardized pledge education program), revamped our Chapter Standards program (previously known at the Spirit of Excellence), and continued to enhance our communication with chapter leadership. In the past biennium, our Chapter Coaches had over 6,000 touchpoints with chapter officers, the results of which are evident in our ongoing success!

Our dedicated and industrious staff continue to work to further develop these and other programs. We were also recently recognized by the NorthAmerican Interfraternity Conference (NIC) with a Laurel Wreath Award – a first for Acacia – for excellence in education programming, as a result of the development of the Lee Kearney Summit. I strongly encourage all chapters to send as many

current and future leaders as possible to our upcoming Summit (3-5 January 2023). Not only is it an opportunity to develop personally, fraternally, and professionally but it helps brothers connect with one another and see what Acacia is at an international level.

Going forward, Acacia will be implementing an ambitious plan to continue to position itself for the future. The development of our strategic plan is shifting to a shorter planning horizon to be more responsive to dynamic priorities. This will also include reviews and assessments of our work to ensure that we’re putting our best foot forward and investing in programming and services that provide value for undergraduates and alumni. As passed by Conclave, the three areas of focus in our 2022 plan are to focus on:

• Growth (individual chapter membership and International Fraternity)

• Well-Being & Development (of our members)

• Engagement (developing engagement strategies/models for alumni, parents of members, and our communities)

While this plan is indeed ambitious, each pillar will be directly overseen by a member of Council, supported by staff, and driven by volunteers (both undergraduate and alumni alike).

In order to harness the power of our brotherhood, I would invite you to consider providing your subject matter expertise and volunteer your time to the fraternity. Whether you can spend 1 hour a week or 1 hour a month, as a member, your input and opinion are valued. We need brothers to roll up their sleeves and help out at the chapter level, house corporation board level, and to serve on international committees and the Council. Please consider visiting acacia.org/volunteer and submitting the online form to help shape the future of our fraternity. Your resourcefulness is key to our continued success!

FALL 2022 5 Start
of Fall 2022

We all know the positive impact that Acacia has had on our lives. From lifelong friend ships to professional preparedness and from developing us as leaders to fostering a mindset for service, Acacia helped make us who we are today.

We know that. But recent research on fraternities has actually proven the impact Aca cia and fraternities have on men in college and throughout their lives.

Research proves that fraternities foster positive mental health, serve as an accelerator for success and engender tremendous loyalty and connection to their campus, com munity and brothers.

Here are three key takeaways from a collection of independent studies on fraternities:

FALL 2022 5

Fraternity members experience stronger mental health and wellness.

While college men are experiencing loneliness and depression at increasing rates, fraternities empower students to create a strong support system.

Research shows that this connection can create a strong sense of belonging, leading members to have more positive mental health and less anxiety and depression than other students. Brothers feel comfortable having tough conversations and learning from each other, and when they seek help, members are twice as likely to reach out to a fraternity brother than anyone else.

“In a dorm or apartment, students can feel isolated like they can’t lean on others. At Acacia, I know that if I’m having a tough day, much of the stress melts away the second I walk through the door of the chapter house. There are always brothers doing something fun, going to a service event, planning a brotherhood kickback, or just hanging out. If a brother is going through a rough patch, they feel safe opening up to each other. It means a lot to live with 30 of my best friends with whom I’ll have lifelong connections.” –Mason Merkel, Purdue ’18

Students spend 90% of their time outside the classroom. Fraternities capitalize on those hours by preparing men for success in college and in their futures far beyond what their peers experience. A study of thousands of alumni of diverse backgrounds shows this holds true regardless of an individual’s background or socioeconomic status entering college.

Because of higher expectations, as well as the support and network fraternities provide, members experience greater gains in learning and graduate at higher rates than their peers. 83% of members say their confidence in their leadership skills increased because of their membership. Fraternity members also report higher levels of interaction with people different from themselves, lending them being more prepared than their peers to join a diverse workforce and community.

“My Fraternity has challenged me in more ways imaginable. I have been pushed so far out of my comfort zone by my brothers and that truly allowed me to grow as a person, student and leader. I attribute my successes in college to the efforts of my fraternity brothers for encouraging me to try new things and for inspiring me to strive for greatness.” –Braden Black, Kansas State ‘21

STUDIES PROVE FRATERNITY

Fraternity men love their collegiate experience – as students and as alumni. In fact, more than 8 out of 10 fraternity members say they would rejoin their organizations. Research shows fraternity membership connects men to the university in a way that nonmembers simply don’t experience. They’re more satisfied as students and as alumni are more likely to recommend and give back to their alma maters.

Members are more engaged inside and outside of the classroom than their peers—they report feeling more supported by their faculty, and nearly half serve in leadership roles across campus. They’re also more connected to their local communities, with research showing they spend significantly more time volunteering than non-affiliated students.

FALL 2022 6
Fraternities are an accelerator for success, in college and beyond.
Fraternities create lifelong connection to the campus, community and their peers.
3x more likely to obtain an internship while in college
Almost 2x as likely to have a job waiting for them when they graduate 2x as likely to encourage others to attend their alma mater 5x as likely to give back financially to their alma mater
Almost 5x as likely to be satisfied with their lives as alumni
MEN ARE:

Atlanta, Georgia was home to the 62nd Biennial Conclave of Acacia Fraternity!

Held August 3-7, over 150 members and guests assembled in the “City of Trees” to congregate and celebrate Acacia Fraternity’s accomplishments for the previous biennium and conduct the business to propel the fraternity towards success for the next two years.

During Conclave, speakers presented topics, members gathered to discuss topics, and committees developed reports on their recommendations for improvements. Our first speaker was James Robilotta who spoke on the topic, “Men: Work in Progress.” Members were engaged as they discussed doing the “cool” thing opposed to doing what is true to themselves.

A second speaker, Woody Woodcock, came to Acacia on behalf of Phired Up! to help celebrate the wins of recruitment and encourage every chapter towards the mindset of “Recruitment is Won in the Off-Season.” Members heard from their peers about the success they have found by adopting this mindset and learned how to implement the Acacia Growth System in their own chapters.

A big congratulations to Purdue chapter for their success that led to winning the Malcolm Award for being the Chapter of the Biennium! Read below for a full list of the new council officers and awards presented.

It was truly a great Conclave. For those who couldn’t join us this year, you were missed! We hope that you can save the date to join us July 31-August 4 in Phoenix, Arizona for Conclave 2024!

NEWS & UPDATES

2022)

The updates below have been submitted by chapters. In the case that an update wasn’t received, a simple update on membership numbers and Conclave awards was written on behalf of the chapter. If you have any questions or would like to get in touch with the chapter, please reach out to communications@acacia.org.

83 CALIFORNIA OF PENNSYLVANIA

VENERABLE DEAN WADE WOLFGANG

During freshman move in, we have managed to obtain about 14 potential members, some of which would like to wait until next semester, some are ready right now. We currently have 7 pledges (which more than doubles our numbers!). We have been holding 2-3 events each week whether that is basketball, cornhole, a social gathering, or something as simple as a bonfire. These have allowed the new guys to build a solid connection with each other along with the actives.

94 ARIZONA STATE

Last semester the Arizona State Chapter initiated 9 men into their ranks. They currently have 47 pledges and look forward to growing the chapter with these great men. They were recognized at Conclave with awards for Athletic Achievement, Community Relations, and Human Service. They continue to be a leader on their campus and look forward to an excellent fall semester.

NEW AUBURN

The Auburn Associate Chapter currently has 5 members and 1 pledge. They have been working closely with Acacia HQ to grow and develop as an associate chapter. If you are in the Auburn area and would like to support the associate chapter as an advisor, please reach out to communications@acacia.org.

05 CALIFORNIA

The California Chapter currently sits at 37 members and 7 pledges. They have been rapidly growing on their campus and were approved to have their charter granted at the 2022 Conclave. They were also recognized as the Best Young Chapter / Colony of the Biennium!

California Chapter will be holding their Founders’ Day and Rechartering Banquet on April 14, 2023 in Berkeley. Keep an eye out for more information about this and we hope to see as many brothers as possible there! For more information on their chartering, or if you have interest in advising the chapter, please reach out to communications@acacia.org.

These men are thrilled to unite with their pledge brothers and solve any problems that may come their way throughout the process. Thanks to Ian Finn and our housing corporation, we just received shipment of doors/ locks and kitchen cabinets that will be installed soon. Lastly, our rush T-shirt fundraiser has been extremely successful, and we extended the purchase order to every chapter that was present at Conclave in Atlanta. I would like to thank every alumnus that has donated money in any amount, we wouldn’t be where we are today without your help.

85 CARLETON

VENERABLE DEAN NICHOLAS VECCHIOLA

Over the last three weeks, the Carleton Chapter of Acacia has managed to build a strong campus presence, coming out of the COVID-19 years on top. Our recruitment period is coming to an end this week and we are looking to extend more than 15 bids to some very promising potential new members.

Over our recruitment period, we managed an incredibly successful wing night which paved the way for a strong recruitment period. Last week we had several brothers come out to help in the Terry Fox run, restoring our long lasting relationship with the Terry Fox Foundation.

25 COLORADO

Our chapter has been very busy in Boulder since you last heard from us. Between growing our numbers, improving social relations with our neighbors and greek system, and dedicating ourselves to taking a more active part in the affairs of our community, we can confidently say that we have set our future brothers up for success.

While we have over 30 new active brothers, one of the more notable additions to the house is certainly Chop the pig. He is under a year old, but has been growing rapidly and appreciates being able to be around the brotherhood. Chop is very popular with our neighbors as well, whom we diligently welcomed throughout moveins by dropping off housewarming baskets. We are currently also in the process of organizing a block party with the neighboring fraternity. Continuing on our greek

CHAPTER & ASSOCIATE CHAPTER CLOSURES

Illinois Wesleyan Chapter

Our chapter at Illinois Wesleyan University was closed during the spring of 2022 due recruitment issues. Due to the size of the chapter, an undue burden was placed on the remaining members and a decision was made with the membership to close for a short period of time and allow the existing members to focus on their academics. As part of the closure process, we secured a return to the campus in the fall of 2023 and look forward to returning to campus with a healthy and sustainable group!

relations, our last formal, hosted in Steamboat Springs, was an amazing weekend full of skiing and hot springs visits.

This semester we had a very successful rush season, which was kicked off by the performer of Boulder’s Welcomefest, Mike Dimes, attending and promoting our welcome week events and was finalized with the smoking of 100 lbs of brisket. However, our biggest improvement so far has been on the Human Service front. Through offering various different volunteer opportunities, and thanks to organizations such as the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless and others, we have managed to get every active member to contribute to our goal of 150 hours as well as our monthly clean-ups of the neighborhood.

14 CORNELL

Fall is in full swing at Cornell Acacia. Over the summer, our common room’s floors were redone to great affect, while many bedrooms were re-painted and beautiful skylights were installed in the dormer.

The semester started well, with every room in the house being occupied, and only got better as fall rush yielded 4 excellent pledges. Now, the brothers are buckling in to maintain our chapter’s A- GPA this semester.

9 ILLINOIS

73 ILLINOIS STATE

We have been enjoying our new permanent house that we just obtained in the spring after renovations. We recently expanded our executive board from seven to nine with the additions of Standards Chairman and Chaplain. In addition, we have Inducted 46 pledges for the 2022 fall semester.

This year marked the fiftieth year of the original chartering on Illinois State’s campus, as well this is our tenth year on campus since the rechartering in 2012. Thank you to the support of all who have helped make this possible!

27 INDIANA OF PENNSYLVANIA

VENERABLE DEAN DYLAN FLASHER

We have come a long way since our last chapter update in 2019. Our chapter has expanded into double digits including our two newest members! We also have been busy recently with another successful philanthropy week ending with our 3rd annual Pong for Pups water pong tournament!

During IUP’s homecoming week our chapter alongside Tri Sigma, ASA, and Sig Kap placed 3rd in the homecoming float contest. We all have worked hard to get to this point. We will continue to improve so that our chapter keeps thriving as well as give back to the community in which it resides! Proud to be an Acacian!

20 IOWA

In the spring of 2022, the Iowa Acacia Fraternity added 5 new members. Fast forward to the fall of 2022, we currently have 12 pledges. Including current pledges, we are the largest we have ever been! Also, in the Spring of 2022 we achieved a chapter average GPA of 3.21.

19 IOWA STATE

Spring 2022 was a busy semester for the Iowa State Chapter as we brought back many events that had been cancelled due to COVID-19, including: Mom’s Weekend, Acacia Acai Bowls, and our Formal.

TOPP

Over the course of 2022 our chapter has had many successes. We were able to participate in many sorority philanthropy events. Over the summer we were able to redo our kitchen flooring with the help of our greatly appreciated donations. We are hoping to have an amazing rest of the semester.

Our Mom’s Weekend consisted of several community service projects, making tie blankets with our moms, and watching the Iowa State Women’s Basketball game. This was a great time for our brothers to spend time with their moms. We hosted our second ever Acacia Acai Bowls, a philanthropy we started in 2019. This was well attended and was the second public event we have hosted at the new chapter house. We raised money for

YSS, an Ames-based non-profit that helps at-risk youth and adolescents in our community.

Our formal was in Des Moines and was a relatively small event but was well received and is a great baseline for us to build on as we did not have any members with experience planning a formal still in the active chapter.

In March, we hosted alumni, international staff, council members, and members from other Acacia chapters at our house dedication. This was the first time that many of them were able to see the chapter house in person since its completion in August of 2020. At the dedication, seventeen brothers and one friend of the chapter were awarded the Order of Pythagoras, and two brothers were awarded the Award of Merit. The chapter was also presented a reproduction of the original charter that was lost in the 1990s.

In a change of pace from recent history, we focused heavily on our Greek Week participation. This resulted in our pairing (Acacia, Tri Delt, and Sig Ep) winning Greek Week. This puts us at a 2-win streak after our pairing (Acacia, Chi O, and Farmhouse) won Homecoming in the fall of 2021. We also worked with Pi Alpha Phi, an MGC fraternity, to make and hang banners support survivors of Sexual Assault for the month of April. Near the end of the semester, we hosted a formal dinner with guest speaker Bill Post, the 2021-2022 Grand Master of Masons in Iowa.

As Fall 2022 starts, we are optimistic in growing our chapter and building off our previous successes. We are working hard to add a 3rd win to our streak this Homecoming and hope to include that in our next report.

Finally, we would like to express our appreciation of the Iowa Chapter for hosting some of our members at their house during the Iowa vs. Iowa State game at the start of the semester. The game was an upset as Iowa State won for the first time in 8 years. Go Cyclones!

95 JAMES MADISON

VENERABLE DEAN MASON SHEETZ

James Madison Chapter currently sits at 37 members and 7 pledges. They have been rapidly growing on their campus and were approved to have their charter granted at the 2022 Conclave. They were recognized at Conclave with an award for Human Service due to their efforts in their community starting and maintaining a non-profit organization.

The James Madison Chapter desires additional alumni advisors and anyone who is willing to give back to Acacia - whether an hour a week or an hour a month - is encouraged to reach out to communications@acacia.org.

27 KANSAS STATE

VENERABLE DEAN BRADEN BLACK

Hello! My name is Braden Black and I am the current Venerable Dean of the Kansas State Chapter of Acacia.

FALL 2022 CHAPTER NEWS & UPDATES 11

We are off to a great start to this semester. We are glad to be back in the house and on campus.

This fall, we welcomed 15 new members to our chapter and we can’t wait to see what their future in Acacia holds for them. Before we moved back in, Sam Ward, Hugh Sidabutar, and I traveled to Atlanta for the 62nd Biennial Conclave. We had a blast and enjoyed getting to meet brothers from across the country.

After Conclave, we took home 5 Chapter Excellence awards along with Outstanding Chapter of the Year. With much to look forward to this semester, we are ready to get to work and to persevere.

We appreciated seeing all of the local alumni at our 1st annual week-long philanthropy event ‘Pawsitive Vibes’ starting October 3rd and for the Homecoming football game on October 29th! So Live.

52 LOUISIANA STATE

The Louisiana State Chapter of Acacia is excited to announce our largest pledge class since returning to campus. With the addition of 58 new members, the chapter is looking forward to the rest of the year.

The chapter has improved their Judicial Board by introducing an accountability plan which will make enforcing punishments easier and more efficient. The chapter is looking forward to several upcoming date events, brotherhood events, and tailgates.

4 NEBRASKA

Nebraska has made considerable strides in preparing new members for the future by creating new systems and resources for all new members and members who will soon be officers. Inspired by the new Pathway program, we have completely revamped our pledge education into something more challenging and enriching for these men’s college experiences. There’s also been a lot of emphasis on preparing the future executive teams, we’ve been hard at work getting ready to take new officers through a more closely performed transition.

We’ve also made significant steps in Human Service by bringing back 7 Days of Service to our chapter and raising even more money for several different charities. Perhaps our most fun project as of late, though, has been our flag football season, where we’ve produced hype videos, playbooks, and depth charts, all for the love of the game!

42 OHIO

VENERABLE DEAN RYAN JUNKO

The Ohio Chapter is excited to be back on campus for another year! On September 3rd, our executive board visited alumni Brother J. Scott Cleland’s house for the fall retreat. Fall rush was a success and we are thrilled to welcome our 23 new pledges.

6 OHIO STATE VENERABLE DEAN MATTHEW FINKELSTEIN

As of the Fall of 2022 the Ohio State Chapter of Acacia has 70 members, which includes five pledges of the fall class.

84 MILLERSVILLE

The Millersville Chapter participated in multiple successful events for other organizations last semester. In our most successful fundraiser we had last semester, we raised $800 for St. Jude’s Children Hospital. We had people pay us to eat peppers all the way up to a ghost pepper for $50. Another fundraiser we participated in was the Walk Like MADD event where we raised over $400 to help support the family of Stephen Daverio who passed away because of a drunk driver.

One thing that would be of great benefit to our chapter is to have additional alumni advisors to work with our officers. If you are willing to give some time to support the chapter, please contact communications@acacia.org

For our philanthropy, we are currently putting together two events. The first being a basketball tournament with active members in which everyone contributes 10 dollars and the winning team gets to donate all money raised to the non profit organization of their choice.

The second event is a food drive in which we are partnering with a supermarket and will ask patrons to buy extra items that we will donate to a local food bank.

Moving to our social schedule, we had a joint parents and alumni weekend for our football game versus Iowa which was October 22nd. We rentad a venue for all the parents, active members, and alumni and had lunch on the Sunday after the game. In addition, our executive board elections are this November.

Our current board is looking forward to a great semester and passing the torch to the young and future Acacians.

FALL 2022 CHAPTER NEWS & UPDATES 12

35 OREGON STATE

Last semester the Oregen State Chapter initiated 7 men into their ranks. They currently have 8 pledges and look forward to growing the chapter with these great men.

They were recognized at Conclave with awards for their Pledge Education Program and Social Development Programming. They look forward to an excellent fall semester.

21 PENNSYLVANIA STATE

Last semester we raised $249k for THON (our most ever to date) and ranked #1 in GPA amongst other Penn State fraternities. In addition, we came in 2nd place in three different fraternity intramural league tournaments.

This semester we took a fall pledge class significantly larger than in years past. We are very excited about this pledge class because of the size and quality of its members. We are excited to continue growing and strengthening our great brotherhood.

15 PURDUE

Fresh off of winning the 2022 Malcolm Award, the Purdue Chapter is in full swing! We’ve recruited a strong pledge class of future leaders who have joined the brothers in running multiple alumni Cornerstones events, serving the campus & community, and hosting a huge alumni event for the classes of 1969 & 19761980 where the Dean of Greek Life spoke about the our chapter’s strong future.

Reach out if you would like to visit, become an alumni mentor, or see the architectural renderings for which fundraising is in process!

44 RENNSELAER

MILES

A year ago we were down to just 8 undergraduate members, 6 of which were seniors. We are now up to 14 undergraduate members and only one is a senior! We also have 2 more due to return to campus next year from Arch.

The chapter house is now fully occupied once more and we are doing numerous quick repairs as well as long-term renovations. Big projects to improve the facility this year include redoing the wing windows and repainting the fire escape. We hope you can come by and see how much everything has improved sometime!

80 SAINT CLOUD STATE

Our chapter has been very active and ambitious this semester in hopes to improve our experience in the fraternity. Planning multiple fundraisers and mixers each month, supporting the school’s food pantry and the local humane society, participating in more events with other Greek Life Orgs, and taking on projects to improve our chapter house.

The members have also taken steps to improve our GPA to ensure our members succeed in school. Finally, we have recruited four promising members with more potentially coming later in the semester.

67 TRINE

Last semester the Trine Chapter initiated 4 men into their ranks. They currently have 6 pledges and look forward to growing the chapter with these great men.

They were recognized at Conclave with a Chapter Excellence award for their Human Service efforts. They look forward to an excellent fall semester.

38 WASHINGTON STATE

The Washington State Acacia Chapter has been slowly settling into their new house. With a new house, attitude, and image, we hope to expand into the chapter we want to be.

After this fall semester, numbers should be in the 2025 member range, a number we hope to continue to grow. Our philanthropic efforts continue to excel as we raised over $800 for Shriners in during our Acaciadilla event in the spring. We plan to increase that amount

FALL 2022 CHAPTER NEWS & UPDATES 13

this fall during the week of Halloween through not only selling quesadillas but also through merchandise. As well as strengthening our ties within the community, we have also strengthen our relationships with the Greek community through support on their philanthropic efforts as well as collaborating for social events.

A few weeks ago, we had another successful golf classic and continue to put together more events for alumni even if it is just offering parking for football games. We have recently seen more and more alumni support from both recent and past alumni and it has helped us tremendously. Alumni are always welcome to stop by the house anytime, and are especially welcome to stop for our initiation this fall and this coming spring.

12 WISCONSIN

VENERABLE DEAN MIKA CAVANAGH

Last semester the Wisconsin Chapter initiated 11 men into their ranks. They currently have 26 pledges and look forward to growing the chapter with these great men.

They were recognized at Conclave with Chapter Excellence awards for Campus Leadership & Involvement and Social Development Programming. In addition, they were recognized with the President’s Award for Greatest Growth among chapters of Acacia.

They look forward to an excellent fall semester!

Acacia returned to the University of Texas at Austin during the Fall 2021 semester and began a new expansion at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas in the spring of 2022. For the Fall 2022 semester, we have two expansion projects in the state of North Carolina in progress. Acacia has re-started our project at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after it was stalled due to COVID-19. We are excited to have 10 founding fathers at Chapel Hill who are already working on the process of officer selection. Additionally, a brand new expansion project is happening at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Their IFC requested Acacia start recruiting after their formal recruitment period, so we have just begun our efforts. Several undergraduates from other chapters of Acacia have visited Expansion Coordinator, Christian Taulli, in North Carolina to support him in efforts to bring both associate chapters to fruition this semester.

Northern Colorado Brothers Reunite! by James Valdez, Northern Colorado ’66

“Once a brother, always a brother” sounds a bit cliché; but for the alumni brothers of the University of Northern Colorado, this is their mantra. Although defunct since the 1970’s, a recent gathering/reunion of alumni members took place in Castle Rock, CO with activities planned for brothers as well as their spouses.

The reunion was hosted by Brothers Tom Glasmann, Lanny Munson, and Tom’s wife, Kathy. The planned events included a golf tournament, and a hike in one of the many local state parks, and topped off by a fabulous picnic. Two out-of-state brothers from Nebraska and Maryland joined the activities. For some brothers, it had been over 50 years since they last met. Friendships picked up as if the brothers had never been separated.

Attendees included members who graduated between 1964-1971 and their spouses. Next year, organizers Neil Best, Bob Childers, Mike Usher, and Lanny Munson will be casting a wider net with a nationwide mail-out campaign to attract more alumni participation in this event.

Next year’s event will be held in Greeley, Colorado. where the brotherhood began. Organizers are looking at a schedule of events that will include an afternoon golf outing, events for non-golfers and spouses, and a fun evening of food and frivolity. Recognizing many brothers may not have been back to Northern Colorado since graduation (many, many, years ago) a tour of the campus is under consideration.

Seeking Your Rockwell Moment!

I remember when...

We all have those special memories – perhaps aided by a photograph, a program, a shingle, or a citation – that bring a special sense of fulfillment or happiness...a ‘Rockwellian’ moment, if you will.

You may have never heard of Norman Percevel Rockwell, however his name is synonymous with his over 300 paintings that adorned the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. Known as the ‘storyteller,’ his illustrations traced the history of the United States during the middle of the 20th century. Rockwell created works of art that evoked a strong emotional response - memories of formative events, nostalgia, or feelings of American pride! During his career, he produced an astonishing amount of original works, over 4,000.

The Acacia Fraternity Foundation is blessedto have its own Norman Rockwell in David R. Quick, Rensselaer ’93. You may have met Brother Quick at various Fraternity events as Dave continues to pay it forward, serving as a Director on the Foundation Board. Rather than using a paintbrush, Dave’s canvas of choice is a camera! Whereas Dave calls it a hobby, his work is ‘Rockwellesque’ and captures life’s optimism,

enjoyment, simplicity, and sentimentality. You may have seen some of his creative work in Acacia publications or at acacia.org/foundation (events). You can see his work for Acacia and more by visiting his webpage at photo.ritrian.com/Acacia

Somewhere in your attic, basement, storage room, or college yearbook is that ‘Quickwellian’ picture that brings Fraternity to life and encourage you to share your Acacia nostalgia. You may not have the skills of a Rockwell or Brother Quick; still, we wish to bring the Acacia experience to life and ask for your assistance.

Nearly seven years ago, the Acacia Fraternity Foundation adopted the phrase, Team Acacia – not four years but for life. For many, we think of the Fraternity experience as a four-year proposition and then onto the next phase of life. However, deep inside, Acacia and that ‘trip to Egypt’ was a defining moment in our lives – it made for memories and friends for life. It is this trove of Acacia memorabilia that we encourage you to share.

Recognizing the lifelong impact of Acacia is a reminder of the opportunity we have to positively change the lives of today’s college men through a high-quality fraternity experience. Whether it’s pictures or memorabilia from a bygone era, or to find out how you can make a difference for the next generation – the Acacia Fraternity Foundation is here for you. I remember when… and thousands of others reading this do too!

A growing number of alumni have stretched their contributions to the Foundation by contacting their respective employers for matching gifts. The Acacia Fraternity Foundation wishes to recognize the following companies for the support of their employees and giving back to the community. Please consider contacting your Human Resources department and see if you, too, may be able to double your dollars. AT&T
