Careers Division Plenary: Panel Discussion on Careers and Governance DATE: Monday, August 10 TIME: 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM LOCATION: Hyatt Regency Vancouver Regency Ballroom C The Plenary session builds on the Careers division’s multi-disciplinary tradition and on the 2015 conference theme, Opening Governance. The Privatization of Global Governance and the Asymmetries of Power DATE: Monday, August 10 TIME: 11:30 AM - 1:00PM LOCATION: Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel Ambleside I This symposium is a critical assessment of how globalization has turned production, service delivery and governance into the private domain of non-state actors. Some of the means through which this is achieved are analyzed in this symposium and they include global production networks, the political CSR of MNCs, and the collaborative global policy networks of knowledge, aid and finance. The processes through which private actors deliver public goods, apoliticised norms and values, and public policy are fraught with power asymmetries. Each of the four presentations in this symposium analyze how power is divided between local and global, public and private, corporate and non-corporate actors.

This showcase symposium features a panel of six diversity scholars (including a contributor to the Lean In book) from three different countries who will provide their views on what the ‘Lean In’ phenomenon tells us about the type of career guidance women are seeking, whether there are useful lessons for academia to draw from the approach, and the appropriateness of the approach in light of the latest research.

IM Division New Forms of State-Business Governance in Emerging Economies DATE: Monday, August 10 TIME: 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM LOCATION: Vancouver Convention Centre Room 014 Recent research has identified many ways in which states can affect the development of firms and their capabilities in the current context of intensified international competition by developing new governance mechanisms. However, there often remain substantial barriers to these developments and in this symposium we will examine how novel forms of firm governance and state-business relationships are being

established and what are the problems in achieving this. In particular, our focus is on comparing these novel governance processes in emerging economies, especially across Asia and Latin America. States at both national and local levels are becoming more willing to experiment in new forms of co-governance and business-state collaboration that can lead to increased firm level innovation and upgrading. However, success and failure in these ventures is often difficult to assess and systematic comparative analyses of barriers to the development of experimentalism and learning from these processes have yet to be conducted. This symposium will be an opportunity to examine these developments.

MOC Division Being, Becoming, Feeling: Bridging Research on Identity, Identification, & Affect in Organizations DATE: Tuesday, August 11 TIME: 1:15 PM – 2:45 PM LOCATION: Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel Pinnacle Ballroom III This symposium aims to accomplish three goals: 1) to highlight new findings and emerging theory on the relationships among identity, identification, and affect in organizations; 2) to compare how these relationships differ across organizational contexts; and 3) to provide a forum for discussing the challenges and opportunities of conducting research on identity, identification, and affect in organizations. Identity, identification, and affect interact differently in a variety of contexts. This symposium will explore: (a) how emotional events occur while “playing professional”, (b) how socialization “controls targets’ identities” inducing negative feelings; (c) how identity and image influence the experience and outcomes of guilt for managers who perform “necessary evils” at work; and (d) how legacy identification of university alumni is impacted when the university is under significant identity threat.

TIM Plenary Session: Management Theories Without Sufficient Empirical Support? Some scholars have argued that often these theories are not properly tested or developed and that therefore their adoption and usage produces more problems than solutions for our field. Should we, can we, as a scholarly community, have a stronger role in showing which theories are developed and tested enough to be promoted among practitioners? This panel session will present divergent views on what our role should be, and the advantages and disadvantages of the existing transfer process between the theories generated in academia and those adopted by the business world.
