DEAR COMMUNITY PARTNER, Upon commencing my education at OLP, I had no idea that in less than ten months I would develop the courage to change the world. In reality, maybe I did not completely revolutionize the globe in the traditional sense. However, I did make a considerable difference for being only 14 years old. It all started when I was browsing the internet news and discovered an astounding statistic that 1 in 3 women globally have faced sexual or physical abuse. Naturally, reading this terrified me. I kept picturing my all-girls high school gym, full of eager young faces and how statistically a third of the entire student body would experience abuse. This kept me up at night. This made me want to do something. How was I supposed to address a global problem? I revisited the site and learned that they were hosting a hackathon, a problem solving competition with a million dollar prize to address this issue. With a team of innovative colleagues, I headed into a summer break of hard work, tirelessly fighting against abuse. Despite ultimately losing the million dollar prize, my team and I acquired something extremely valuable from that competition: a new view of the world. We were able to meet with the police chief of San Diego and several other high executives to discuss our opinions regarding women’s safety. We were not too young to be taken seriously; our opinions mattered. With persistence, age could not hold us back from tackling the world’s largest problems.
This new view of the world has inspired us to new levels of determination. While the women’s safety hackathon ended, there are still millions of other issues that affect our daily lives. Living in San Diego, we have seen the pollution levels rise, while the trees get browner and the climate gets drier and it is imperative that we devote our efforts to sustainability in the modern world. However, we are not expected to do this alone. That is why we are committed to hosting a hackathon. We will show other young women in our area that they too can use their creativity to instigate change. A hackathon provides a collaborative and relaxed environment to ignite passion and excitement. Not only will it teach proper business skills and engineering techniques, but it will also empower a new generation of changemakers. We need your help to make our vision of a sustainability hackathon for young women reality. With your support, we will initiate a wave of innovation that will truly sweep the world off its feet. Thank you, Emma Rens ‘20 OLP Hackathon Team Lead
2019 Hackathon Leadership Team “Women hold less than 25% of STEM jobs, and hold a disproportionately low share of STEM undergrad degrees, particularly in engineering. However, women who do pursue careers in STEM fields, earn 33% more than comparable women in non-STEM jobs. According to a local CONNECT Innovation Report, the regional innovation sector accounts for more than $55 billion of San Diego’s economic activity and directly impacts 400,500 jobs.” --Ashley Jacobs, CBS 8 News

Team Testimonials “We as a team believe that women in STEM are the face of the future. Together, we can solve problems, find cures, and envision solutions for a better world. If we take the initiative, we can take our passions for science to new heights.” --Elena Ruta ’20 “It is imperative that young women feel capable and prepared to handle the future that we will inherit, as it will be up to us to create the world we want to live in. Now, more than ever, opportunities and spaces for young women to expand their understanding of the world and develop solutions to various problems must be available to every girl, as each young woman has the potential and ability to greatly benefit herself, her community, and the greater world around her.” --Michelle Rickwa ’20
