THE ACADEMY OF OUR LADY OF PEACE PRESENTS

A Night at the Museum SPRING SING 2019 MARCH 1-2, 2019 | BALBOA THEATRE

WELCOME TO OUR 49TH ANNUAL SPRING SING! As parents, alumnae, students and friends, we once again gather in the Balboa Theatre to celebrate the 2019 musical extravaganza, Spring Sing, choreographed and produced exclusively by our very own students. For those who have not experienced OLP’s campus in preparation for Spring Sing, it is an all-encompassing event. From costume work, scene preparation, choreography, acting, directing, singing and dancing, the students invest incredible amounts of time learning roles comparable to CEO, CIO, COO, CFO and much more! Tonight’s event will be a wild adventure as we experience frosh as The Scream, sophomores as The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, juniors as A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte and seniors as The Elephants. Rest assured that you will never look at “A Night at the Museum” in the same way! It is with sincere pride that I recognize the hard work and dedication of each and every student who undertook the additional commitment beyond her rigorous academic schedule to prepare this truly amazing musical show. Not only do audience members gain insight into the many talented individuals who comprise the OLP student body, we can also see first-hand the spirit of collaboration and sisterhood amongst the girls. This spirit of unifying love speaks directly to the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and is what pulls us together as a community of faith. On behalf of our entire OLP community, I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude for all you have given to allow this special tradition to continue. For many parents, this meant extra time commuting back and forth and coordinating carpools. I also want to acknowledge our faculty and staff for their tremendous dedication and helping them achieve beyond what many thought they were capable. I know that some of our alumnae in the audience have traveled from afar to be here in celebration and camaraderie with their alma mater. We also welcome those prospective Pilots joining us in anticipation of their OLP journey ahead. Thank you for your presence and your gifts in support of our school. Again I welcome you to our grand event. May your heart be touched by the joyful noise of the gifts endowed to our girls. Now on with the show! Lauren Lek, Ed.D. Head of School

A LETTER FROM GABRIELLE PASCUA ’19 Four years ago, when I was in 8th grade, I took a seat at the Balboa Theatre in the audience of my first Spring Sing — just as you are right now. Like many prospective students, I took advantage of the two complimentary tickets offered to me whilst nervously waiting for my admissions interview in February of 2015. At the balcony level with my mom seated to the left, the locally famous Mrs. Hooper and her family in my peripheral to the right, and the vast stage with its vibrant curtains still closed diagonally below, the experience at that moment was a great deal for 13-year-old me to take in. Though not that long ago, it feels like I was an entirely different person then. A month before, I had just taken the placement test and so many overwhelming thoughts were surging through my head. What will OLP be like? How will I make any friends? Will I even belong? But then the lights dimmed, the spotlights shifted, the curtains lifted, and the show began. The answers to those questions? I found them that night through Spring Sing. By witnessing the unifying love known as the OLP Sisterhood demonstrated on stage, I got a taste of what my future could be like as an OLP Pilot. As my worries about high school melted away, I left the theater craving so much more. I dreamed of taking on the stage with my own OLP sisters someday — and, for four years, I’ve done exactly that. Spring Sing has transported the Class of 2019 from sunny San Diego to a Mardi Gras parade on Canal Street, to the Queen’s birthday party at Buckingham Palace, across the universe to the realm of elemental Dragons, and finally into the depths of Africa where The Elephants roam. I’m absolutely enamored with the journeys Spring Sing has taken me on and looking back on all the memories feels so bittersweet. Each performance yields a thrilling chapter added to the stories of our lives. Now, as a Senior, I just wish this chapter didn’t have to end. I can confidently say that OLP is a unique experience and Spring Sing, to me, is the pinnacle of it all. It is stressful, it is tiring, and rehearsals can be chaotic — but ultimately, sharing the stage with my sisters transcends all the hiccups and bumps in the road. It is the most worthwhile and magical feeling I’ve ever felt. As you enjoy your “Night at the Museum,” though our shows have been inspired by famous paintings, the real art is found in the substance of heart we manifest on stage. Hopefully you, too, will be able to witness the radiating tenderhearted magic of OLP as I once did while seated in the audience all those years ago. The judges have the difficult task of rating the four classes on just two nights of performances. Decisions are guided through the lens of our charism and CSJ mission and guided by the following criteria: Singing: projection, pitch and enunciation Acting: actors are fully committed to character, characters are specific and well developed, actors’ voices are projected and articulate, full use of stage to support story Chorus Participation: chorus is fully integrated into story, knows movement and stage positions for each song, creative use and movement of full stage Costumes: actors’, dancers’, chorus’ costumes are creative and appropriate to character, costumes portray cohesiveness

Dancing: choreography is creative and original, each dance supports the story, dancers know steps and are together on timing, different dance styles incorporated to support story Props/Sets: relevant to storyline, creative, use of props enhance story Story Line/Script: originality, songs appropriate to script, clear and logical plot structure, adherence to theme Theme: clear and interesting

We are deeply indebted to the judges for performing this task. Each class extends itself to the fullest, presenting to us exemplary performances far in excess of our anticipation. Congratulations to each and every one of our performers!

Freshmen-”The scream” by edvard munch

Three students, one teacher, and four personalities. When this class embarks on a field trip to the National Gallery, they come across a painting known as The Scream. The teacher, of course, poses the question of why the person is screaming, sparking an entire debate over the famous painting. This musical is a quirky, comedic, and energetic interpretation of friendship that ultimately aims to answer the following questions: Will this debate tear the class apart? Or will it make them grow closer?

Thank You! To begin with, the freshman class would like to thank the faculty supervisors, Ms. Yang ‘09, Ms. Nagem ‘70, Mrs. Rodriguez, Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Gibbs, Ms. Carr ‘10, Mr. Paluso, Mrs. Hicke, Mrs. Williams, and Mrs. Vasconcelos for their dedication to the spirit and success of Spring Sing. We’d also like to recognize our faculty moderators, Ms. Cunningham, Ms. Purpera, and Ms. Stanko for their constant support and help without which our show wouldn’t have been possible. Their leadership and example of positivity throughout Spring Sing is greatly appreciated. We’d definitely like to thank Mr. Tracy, Dr. Dicce, Ms. Marshall, and Ms. Young as their expertise and guidance made it much easier to produce this show. Finally, we want to thank each other, sisters of the Class of 2022, for working hard day in and day out to bring this show to life. Without one another, Spring Sing would have been a far less memorable and exciting experience.
