LETTER FROM THE ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER

For every show there is vision, and in OLP’s rendition of Newsies, it is an inspiring one: the youth must stand up for what is right, because they can make a difference. The camaraderie shown throughout the musical shows that just because you’re young doesn’t mean that you can’t make a difference in the world. Furthermore, the friendships created during the story (as well as in the actual cast and crew) show that family can be found anywhere and through anyone.

Newsies is the story of the brave, daring, and adventurous newsboys in 1899 New York who stand up and strike against the exploitative newspaper companies, proving that young people’s voices deserve to be heard. This is as true today as then, and at OLP we have so many opportunities to be the change we want to see.

One way we bring the story to life is through props and sets. While learning about the show and getting inspiration from the Broadway version, our sets and props designers have added their own twists and ideas to the art while making sure it’s all accurate to the time and place of 1899 New York. For example, the hand-painted sign on the door to The World newspaper building is modeled after the actual logo from the newspaper at that time.

For our costumes, we did extensive research on the fashion and styles of the late 19th century. Our team scoured vintage shops and consulted with historical experts to get the details just right. We wanted to make sure that every character looked authentic and true to the time period. We also worked with our students to ensure that the costumes were comfortable and easy to move in, as they will be doing a lot of dancing in the show!

Our lighting and sound teams worked hard to create an immersive and dynamic experience for our audience. We experimented with different lighting and sound effects to create the mood and tone for each scene. Our students also had a hand in this process, helping to choose the music and sound effects that will bring the show to life.

From beginning to end, our student management and production team poured countless hours into researching and creating every aspect of our production of Newsies. We are excited to share this incredible show with our community and hope that audiences will be transported to the streets of New York City and feel the energy and passion of our characters. We can’t wait for you to see the magic that our team has created!

We hope all you enjoy our show that all of the departments have worked so hard to bring to life!

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Approaching Stage Combat and Romance at OLP

Thank you for joining us in our production of Newsies, a show we have been working on since November and are so glad to share with you all. Here at the Academy we value Faith, Courage, Excellence, and Heart, and we seek to produce shows that align with these values. However, drama is dramatic! And often it’s that side of life that makes for the very best plays and musicals. Newsies is uplifting, funny, spirited, but also challenging at an all-girls Catholic school.

We cannot stress enough the importance of precise rehearsal when it comes to stage combat and stage romance. These are both aspects of “intimacy” that require a great deal of attention and care from both the actors and the production team.

For this reason, we spent over 10 hours teaching our students stage combat and coming up with the blocking for the big fight at the end of Act 1. Safety was of the utmost importance, and we made sure that all actors felt comfortable and secure in executing the moves. The result is a breathtaking scene that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats.

Similarly, the actors playing Jack and Katherine were instructed that their romantic moments should give the illusion of contact, but no actual kissing occurs. We understand that this can be a difficult concept to grasp, especially for high school actors who may not have had much experience with stage romance. However, we worked closely with our actors to ensure that they felt comfortable and confident in their performances.

At our all-girls Catholic school, we are dedicated to promoting peace and harmony. However, we also recognize that entertainment is often predicated on struggle and conflict. Our production of Newsies explores the struggles of working-class youth in New York City at the turn of the 20th century. Through the power of music, dance, and storytelling, we hope to transport our audience back in time and inspire them with the resilience and determination of our characters.

We are immensely proud of the hard work and dedication our cast and crew have put into this production. We hope that audiences will appreciate the attention to detail that we have placed on both the stage combat and stage romance aspects of the show. Most of all, we hope that everyone enjoys the show and leaves feeling inspired by the power of theater to bring people together and tell meaningful stories.

Thank you for joining us.
