DIRECTOR’S NOTES A Note from the Director: Welcome back to live theatre! It’s hard to believe but the last time we put on a “normal” show was TWO YEARS AGO with our production of Hamlet! It has been a joy to put “Shrek the Musical” together, and it’s so exciting to see so many students share their passions. “Shrek”, in my opinion, is a show that has held up very well since the movie premiered in 2001. The story of a very unlikely hero venturing to save a most unusual princess has a delightfully subversive throughline that explores prejudice, societal norms, and self-acceptance that elevates it far above the veneer of “gross” that is also fully formed. I guess I have a soft spot for work that is both silly and deep, simple yet meaningful. And the songs are just so darn catchy! We live in an age where self-definition is at the center of so much, especially our teens. I hope this examination of the tropes that inform our collective unconscious helps us to find acceptance even of that which we don’t understand. Enjoy the show!

-Justin Tracy
