Dear OLP Pilot Community,

As we celebrate the completion of our Boundless Campaign, I am filled with immense pride and joy for what we have accomplished together. This transformative journey began with the vision to enhance our campus, ensuring it continues to serve as a beacon of educational excellence and faith. Today, that vision is realized with the renovation of our historic Esther San Filippo Navarra Hall, the creation of the Shiley Center for Science and Innovation, and the final touch—the opening of the St. Thérèse Library and Performing Arts Center.

In 2020, we embarked on the ambitious task of renovating Navarra Hall, our original academic building, and establishing the Shiley Center with its six new multidisciplinary science labs. These spaces have already begun to inspire the generation of women leaders and changemakers. This May, we celebrated the final phase of our campaign with the completion of the St. Thérèse Library and Performing Arts Center. The unbridled joy that emanated from our students and employees as they explored this new space was truly heartwarming. It is a joy that reflects our community’s spirit and dedication to learning, creativity, and faith.

A standout feature of the new building is the two-story spiral slide descending from the second-story library. The slide is a tangible reminder that joy and laughter are integral to our lives. In the spirit of our Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, we believe that no one is ever too old for joy! As Ross Gay beautifully writes in his book, “What delights you, what is impossibly beautiful, makes you reach out to touch who’s sitting next to you... My delight grows—much like love and joy—when I share it.”

This final addition to our campus stands as a testament to the boundless possibilities that lie within our community.

OLP is a place where learning, creativity, and joy come together—a space where student arts are celebrated and where St. Thérèse, one of the only four female Doctors of the Church, is honored. Her presence on the grand staircase is a reminder of the hope and faith we carry through life’s challenges.

In this magazine, we are also thrilled to highlight the outstanding achievements of our Class of 2024. These remarkable young women have received 1,188 offers of admission to 223 universities worldwide, including Ivy League institutions, top-tier public research universities, and highly selective private schools. Notably, 16% of our graduates are the first in their families to pursue a college degree, and an impressive 46% have chosen to major in STEM fields, where women still remain underrepresented. Moreover, 76% of our seniors were awarded merit-based scholarships, totaling $21,875,786. These achievements underscore the strength of an OLP education and the dedication of our students and faculty. Through these pages, you will witness the spirit of OLP—the commitment to excellence, the joy of learning, and the strength of our community. You will see our students, past and present, soaring to new heights and making a profound impact on their communities and the world.

As we move forward, let us carry the joy and hope that this campaign has ignited in our hearts. Let us continue to inspire and support one another, grounded in our faith and united in our mission to educate and empower young women.

Have a blessed and joyful summer!

Welcoming Peter Harris: A Leader Rooted in Catholic Education

It is with great pleasure and anticipation that we introduce Mr. Peter Harris as the newest addition to our Academy of Our Lady of Peace family. Beyond his professional achievements, Peter embodies the spirit of servant leadership, characterized by compassion, respect, and an unwavering commitment to community welfare. His leadership philosophy seamlessly aligns with our school’s values of unifying love and service without distinction, promising to enrich the educational experience for all members of our community. As we embark on this new chapter together, we extend our warmest welcome to Peter Harris. We are excited about the positive impact his visionary leadership and compassionate spirit will undoubtedly bring to our community.

The Boundless Journey Comes to

It started out with an idea, one that whispered of possibilities and potential. Little did the visionaries behind it know that their aspirations would blossom into a monumental testament to the enduring spirit of generosity and dedication. The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP) embarked on its first ever comprehensive multi-phase capital campaign, Boundless, which was publicly launched in January 2019. It would be a journey, which would culminate in the spring of 2024 with the unveiling of the St. Thérèse Library and Performing Arts Center, a beacon of academic excellence and artistic enrichment nestled in the heart of our historic campus.

The grand reveal marked a significant milestone in OLP’s history, made possible by the unwavering support and contributions of donors and supporters. With hearts full of gratitude, the OLP community welcomed the newest addition to its campus, a sprawling 23,000 squarefoot subterranean marvel that promises to redefine the landscape of education and creativity. The St. Thérèse Library and Performing Arts Center transcends the conventional boundaries of academia, embodying the holistic philosophy embraced by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Beyond its role as a space for intellectual exploration, the complex stands as a sanctuary for joy and laughter, a playful reminder of the inherent delight found in the pursuit of knowledge.

St Joseph Scholars

The Academy of Our Lady of Peace has expanded its learning support program to cater to all students, enhancing academic support for all Pilots as well as for the Sisters and Scholars program. In addition, this school year introduces our St. Joseph’s Scholars Program for students with diverse learning needs. These comprehensive programs aim to provide tailored assistance and resources to students to achieve academic progress and success. To further strengthen these efforts, the school has welcomed two dedicated professionals: Julia Marentez, Learning Support Specialist, and Fallon Tureson, Education Specialist to work alongside faculty and counselors to support Pilots throughout their educational journey. Their expertise and collaborative approach will ensure that students receive individualized support, fostering academic growth and success across the entire student body.

It is our pleasure to introduce Julia Marentez ‘97, our Learning Support Specialist at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace. Julia joins us with over 25 years of teaching and leadership experience within diverse learning communities in both public and private schools located in the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Kapolei, Hawaii, and finally, bringing it full circle to the Diocese of San Diego. Julia is passionate about lifelong learning, continuous improvements, and advocating for increased inclusion in Catholic K-12 schools to improve the educational experience and maximize student learning so that all students can achieve their full potential.

Julia earned two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Liberal Studies and Chicano Studies, along with a Multiple-Subject Teaching Credential from California State University Northridge, a Master of Arts degree and Administrative Credential in Educational Leadership from Point Loma Nazarene University, and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Education degree, specializing in Educational Leadership with an emphasis on Pre-K-12 School Leadership at San Diego State University. The combination of her experience and knowledge of special education, creating meaningful learning support programs, differentiated learning, Universal Design for Learning, providing 1:1 and group intervention support, monitoring student progress, and working cooperatively with parents, Local Educational Agencies (LEAs), and community resources, will enable her to strengthen the support services for our students.

As a proud OLP alumna and product of Catholic education, Julia brings a wide range of expertise and dedication to our Pilot community. With a deep commitment to Catholic education and enhancing educational opportunities for all students, she is eager to share her knowledge, experience, and leadership in the newly launched St. Joseph Scholars Program, and collaborate closely with faculty and counselors to provide an inclusive learning environment for young women with mild to moderate cognitive disabilities or significant learning challenges at OLP.

Introducing Fallon Tureson, our Education Specialist at The Academy of Our Lady of Peace. Fallon brings a wealth of experience and dedication to our community, with a profound commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for all students. As a seasoned educator, Fallon’s journey began 17 years ago within the Chicago Diocese, where she taught Music and specialized in Special Education Mild/Moderate. Her background extends to Resource/Education loss prevention, socialemotional education, behavioral therapy, and middle school Science & Literature.

Fallon holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Performance and a Master of Science in Education, enriching her practice with a deep understanding of student needs and individualized learning approaches. Her expertise in advocating for Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) underscores her passion for inclusive education.

As a military spouse and devoted parent of three children, including a son with mod/severe Autism, Fallon’s advocacy is deeply personal. She values time with her family, whether attending softball games or exploring new states—having visited 35 out of 50 so far.

Fallon joins OLP as part of our commitment to expanding learning support programs. Collaborating closely with faculty and counselors, Fallon’s role ensures that every student receives the tailored support needed for academic progress and personal growth.

Senior Spotlight

As a college preparatory high school, OLP values academic success and is proud to recognize the following students from the Class of 2024 who have demonstrated excellence, persistence, and desire for lifelong growth in both academics and extracurriculars.

Q: If you could give your high-school freshman self one piece of advice, what would it be and why?

A: If I could give my high-school freshman self one piece of advice, it would be to cherish every moment because time flies. While it is important to focus on your academics, you should also have a balance and prioritize your well-being.

Q: What’s one hobby or interest you’re excited to explore further in college?

A: Through OLP’s AP Seminar and AP Research classes, I’ve discovered a passion for performing independent research, particularly focused on international communities and relationships. At Georgetown, I hope to use the university’s resources to study modern American economic practices and their impact on developing countries’ economies, with a unique focus on the nation of Haiti.

Q: What’s one thing you hope to accomplish or achieve during your freshman year?

A: During my freshman year at UCLA, I aim to excel academically while fully immersing myself in the university community. I plan to join various clubs and programs to broaden my perspectives, build meaningful connections, and enhance my personal and professional development.

Danganan Accelerated Pre-Pharmacy Program

Q: Who or what will you miss most from OLP?

A: Something that I will miss the most about OLP is definitely having the opportunity to perform in the annual Dance Showcase every spring. It brought feelings of joy, love, and appreciation through the art of dance. Throughout my four years being on the OLP dance team and being in Coach Kelly’s dance classes, I had the opportunity to learn and personally choreograph new pieces and showcase all of our competition routines from that season to the OLP community as well as our family and friends. Performing under the lights and hearing claps and cheers from the audience has truly impacted my experience at OLP as it formed so many fond and cherished memories that I will never forget.

Q: Describe your ideal roommate in three words and why those qualities are important to you.

A: My ideal roommate would be organized, independent, and considerate. These qualities are important to me because in college I want to surround myself with people who will encourage me to step outside of my comfort zone at the same time as being kind and respectful towards me!

Ava Bayne Biology

Q: What’s one item you plan to decorate your dorm/room with that reflects your personality?

A: I plan to decorate my room with California and coastal themed decor. I wanted this to be my room theme because San Diego has been such an amazing place to grow up and I want my dorm to remind me of my home, my loved ones and all of the wonderful memories here.

Gabby Cimmino American Sign Language-English Interpretation

Q: If you could take any elective course at college just for fun, what would it be and why?

A: I would take Italian as a foreign language. While at RIT, I plan to study abroad through the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and learn Italian Deaf culture and sign language. I think it would be cool to tap into my own heritage and learn the language my great grandparents spoke.

Q: What’s one memory from high school that you’ll always cherish, even as you move on to college?

A: One memory that I cherish most from OLP is winning first place at Nationals with my Cheer Team my Junior Year. We did our best and ended up having the highest score in the entire competition. It was so satisfying when our hard work paid off.

Valentina Zepeda Biomedical engineering

Q: Describe your dream study spot on campus—whether it’s a cozy café or a peaceful outdoor nook.

A: My favorite study spot on campus is Mrs. Allen/ Ms. Hartman’s classroom in Qualiato with the reclining chairs. I loved getting to school early when the classroom was peaceful and getting my chair in the perfect position, to lock in on making my notecards and study guides.

Q: What’s your go-to comfort food when you need a break from studying?

A: My go-to comfort snack would definitely be the Trader Joes tortilla chips. They’re the perfect combination of crunchy, spicy and salty.

Looking Back, Moving Forward: The Journey Continues

Merriam-Webster defines dance as “an act or instance of moving one’s body rhythmically, usually to music.” For me, dance is moving in a way that connects to or communicates emotion. It is a forum for me to share feelings I have difficulty expressing in words.

I have been dancing since I was a child. I started at the age of three and, since then, have dedicated nearly all of my free time to perfecting my skills. In my nearly fifteen years of dancing, I have logged countless hours in dance studios. Those studios and competitions promulgated the idea that winning was the only way to be successful in the world of dance. That was something I, too, believed until I joined the dance team at OLP.

While most studios pressure dancers to focus exclusively on the destination, OLP’s dance coaches taught us to focus instead on the journey. No matter the outcome, we were encouraged to feel proud of the time and effort we invested and the skills we developed.

Because of my love of dance and the incredible support I received as a member of the OLP Dance Team, I plan to pursue a professional career in dance. I want to teach young girls about dance and help them

develop their self-expression and confidence. Additionally, because dance is such a powerful tool for processing and communicating feelings, it has the potential to positively impact mental health and emotional well-being. By teaching dance, I hope to empower others to find their voice and express themselves freely.

My journey with dance has taught me that success isn’t solely measured by trophies or accolades but by the personal growth and connections fostered along the way. As I look forward to my future in dance, I am grateful for the lessons learned and excited for the opportunity to inspire others through this art form that has shaped my life so profoundly.

Northwestern

When I was little, I was an absolute menace to my parents. The second I found something intriguing, my curiosity controlled me. I would wander off for hours while my parents were frantically looking for three-year-old me since, supposedly, I was lost. Let’s just say Alexandria, Egypt, was not the safest place to wander around at night, but fiveyear-old me determinedly journeyed to the beach to investigate where the water ended. When I was six, my mom had a business trip, and I ran away to a nearby garden every morning, passionately discovering if flowers became more colorful. When we immigrated to New York City from Cairo, Egypt, seven-yearold me independently took public transit to the city, exploring all that it had to offer through new routes as I adventured to my favorite public library. When I moved to San Diego just before my freshman year of high school, I fervently observed all that OLP has offered me, participating in every opportunity I could to become the history and English nerd that I am today. Fast forward four years later, and here I am, still losing myself to curiosity and letting it guide me as I embark on a new journey at Northwestern University. This is because no matter what, my life story will always be an opportunity to learn, to be an overly curious nerd who wants to change the world.

My name is Nicole Rubio, and I am a proud member of the Class of 2024. I’m thrilled to share my high school journey with you. Navigating the halls of The Academy of Our Lady of Peace has been a journey filled with both challenges and triumphs. From the excitement of joining the tennis team to the unexpected twists and turns brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, each experience has shaped me in profound ways.

High school—a journey of self-discovery, growth, and resilience. As I bid farewell to this chapter of my life, I’m compelled to share the triumphs, challenges, and invaluable lessons learned along the way. Join me on a reflective journey through my four years, where each obstacle became an opportunity, and every setback a stepping stone to greatness.

The tennis court became my sanctuary, a place where passion met perseverance, and victories were forged. My sophomore record of 40 wins to 2 losses symbolized not just athletic prowess, but the unwavering dedication and camaraderie that fueled my success for the rest of the season. From intense matches to nail-biting tournaments, each moment taught me the importance of teamwork, discipline, and unwavering determination in the pursuit of excellence.

Senior year marked a turning point—a time of exploration and self-discovery. As a marketing and communications intern, I stepped into the world of professional communication, navigating the intricacies of branding, strategy, and storytelling. From crafting compelling content to engaging with my fellow classmates and the community, each task challenged me to push beyond my comfort zone and embrace the power of effective communication.

Simultaneously, my journey in journalism opened doors to new possibilities. As a morning news anchor, writer, and designer, I immersed myself in the art of storytelling, capturing the essence of school life through captivating narratives and visually stunning designs. From covering breaking news to producing feature stories, each assignment ignited my passion for journalism and fueled my desire to make a meaningful impact through the power of words and images.

Beyond the realm of academics and extracurriculars, my high school journey was defined by leadership and service. As a Carondelet Circle Student Ambassador and Link Crew Leader, I had the privilege of guiding and inspiring my peers, fostering a sense of community and belonging that transcended the confines of the classroom. Through mentorship, teamwork, and a shared commitment to excellence, we worked tirelessly to create a school culture rooted in inclusivity, empathy, and mutual respect.

Additionally, my involvement in clubs like BeYOUTiFul Club and service organizations like ECYD and Fundacion Castro. Limon provided me with countless opportunities to give back to my community and make a tangible difference in the lives of others. From organizing fundraisers to volunteering, each act of service reinforced the importance of empathy, compassion, and selflessness in creating a more just and equitable world for all.

Yet, even before I set foot in high school, adversity had already made its presence known. Just days before my birthday, the world as we knew it came to a grinding halt as the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe. Plans were shattered, dreams deferred, and the future suddenly seemed more uncertain than ever before.

As an eighth-grader transitioning into high school, the abrupt shift to remote learning and social distancing posed unexpected challenges. What was supposed to be a time of excitement and anticipation quickly turned into a period of isolation and uncertainty. With the cancellation of the much-anticipated East coast trip and the transition to virtual classes, I found myself navigating uncharted waters, grappling with feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Yet, amidst the chaos and uncertainty, I refused to succumb to despair. Instead, I embraced the challenge headon, turning adversity into opportunity and uncertainty into possibility. Through resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering belief in the power of hope and determination, I navigated the stormy seas of the pandemic, emerging stronger, more resilient, and more determined than ever before.

As I bid farewell to OLP and embark on the next chapter of my journey, I carry with me the lessons learned and memories cherished. I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the teachers who have guided me through these formative years. Mr. Moreno, Mrs. Flannery, Mrs. Wilson, Coach Betty Muzquiz and Coach Dan Manlongat. Your dedication and support have made a lasting impact on my life, and I am deeply grateful for all that you do. From the trials of the pandemic to the halls of Villa Montemar, each experience has shaped me into the person I am today—a person defined not by the challenges I’ve faced, but by the resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in the power of possibility that have guided me through even the darkest of times.

To my fellow and future sisters, I leave you with this: embrace challenges, seize opportunities, and never lose sight of the incredible potential within you. For in the face of adversity, we discover our true strength, our true resilience, and our true capacity to rise above even the greatest of obstacles and soar to new heights of greatness.

Au revoir to Villa Montemar
