DIRECTOR’S NOTES

A Note from the Director:

The Addams Family is perhaps best known from the 1960s TV show and the two movies from the 90s, but it began as a single-panel comic by Charles Addams in the 1938 New Yorker. As a kid, I would watch the old black and white show with my grandma. As creepy and kooky as the characters were, I was struck by how they were so accepting, supporting and loving. This connects me to our own OLP school culture of building “unifying love” for all people, rooted in that relational acceptance exampled by our Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In researching the play I discovered that American subcultures saw them as a relatable face on TV, showing the experience of an “outsider,” and were embraced by many immigrants and their children. My wife, herself the child of an immigrant, expressed her affinity as a youngster for seeing this family who didn’t quite fit the stereotypical society, living their own quirky and fulfilling life. I think that’s the reason the Addams Family has become such a cultural touchstone. While so much of what they do is abnormal, it all comes from a place of love. In their world up is down, black is white, but love is love. Teenagers certainly relate to this, and according to NPR, this is the most-performed musical in American high schools. With such a large team, comes great gratitude. First of all, thank you to my wife Lorran and son Kanoa for their insights, understanding, and patience when I get overly excited about this or that. Thank you to Ms. Paige and Ms. Marshall, who are both amazing to create with. I look forward to many more shows! The students’ desire to learn and grow has been inspiring, and there are nearly 70 students involved in this production, representing around 10% of the OLP student body! That isn’t even counting our wonderful Women in Business club, led by Mia Soto ’20, who has taken our concession stand to the next level, or our ushers who help seat our beloved patrons. Thanks also to Thespians for helping run so much behind the scenes. It truly takes a village. Thank you to our wonderful OLP community. Dr. Lek, Mrs. Conroy, Mrs. Hooper, Mrs. Heard, Mrs. Russo, Mr. Boyer, Ms. Sanborn, Mr. Stauder, Mr. White, Ms. Stanko, Mr. Paluso, Mrs. Pippin, Ms. Camarena, Mrs. Bent, and our tremendous teachers who support our extremely busy students. I also have a large number of parent volunteers including Mrs. Webb, Mrs. Sandy, Mrs.Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Tarlov, and so many more who I’m sure will help in myriad ways that I can’t predict at the time I write this. We have some fantastic pros helping us on this show such as Ms. Stephanie Lee from La Jolla Playhouse helping with construction and Miss Leigh Scarritt helping with vocals and casting. Thanks to Stan Sloth and his team at Coronado Playhouse for donating their set and props from their production of Addams Family. Jacqueline Giles ’20 asked them if we could have their set when they were done with it and they donated it to us! Thanks to Trader Joe’s and Jaedyn Lambrecht ’18 for the very fancy shopping cart. Finally, thanks to my seniors. I couldn’t have dreamed of a kinder, funnier, or more dedicated group of students to help me in my first year. I am so blessed to have had this time to learn with and from you. Thank you!

-Justin Tracy
