DIRECTOR’S NOTES A Note from the Director: In searching for a way to properly mark and consider the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, the Chair of the History Department at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace (where I am the Drama Director), Mrs. Emily Devereaux, caught me between class in March 2020, right before COVID-19 put us all in lock-down. She proposed that we combine forces to dig into this momentous confluence of History and Herstory. In this play, we seek to tell the truth of our shared story. Often our characters speak the very words—or close to them—of the people who they represent. We acknowledge that any retelling is flawed; our goal in the research and writing process was to learn and to synthesize, and it has been a powerful experience for us. In this retelling of the era that led to the passage of the 19th Amendment, the voices of suffragists are central. By taking the major events in the Women’s Suffrage Movement and bringing them to life in an original theatrical production, they reveal the arduous fight suffragists waged to ensure the right to vote for women in the United States. As we were writing this play, we could not have predicted that this summer would introduce us to another national movement, to George Floyd, to Breonna Taylor, and to so many others impacted by racism and racial violence. In the words of Civil Rights Activist and Former House Representative John Lewis (February 21, 1940 - July 17, 2020), “When you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have to speak up; you have to say something, you have to do something.” We hope that this play does something.
-Justin Tracy
