2022-2023 Annual Report

A Letter FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Holy Cross Community,

The Academy continues to build its financial resilience and use our resources to support our distinctive academic and extracurricular programs. Our amazing students and faculty are engaged in creative work every day. Our alumnae engaged wholeheartedly in the mission of Holy Cross ensuring generations of success. We are especially grateful to the trustees, foundations, corporations, past and present parents, and friends who have stepped up to demonstrate support of The Academy of the Holy Cross.

The success of this institution in supporting the educational dreams of our students is a community effort. Without this effort, we could not provide ample opportunities, scholarships, an array of innovative outstanding academic initiatives like our engineering and computer science programs, the arts, nor a championship-winning athletic program. We appreciate what this community has done to gather support in helping us bridge gaps in supporting the future of #EmpoweredGirls.

You will find enclosed the names of those who made a difference at Holy Cross with a gift in our 2022-2023 fiscal year. These gifts empower current and future generations of Tartans to explore who they are and who they were meant to be, fulfilling their full potential. The Holy Cross Fund serves as the school’s financial lifeline. It covers expenses that are not included in tuition revenue. The Holy Cross Fund and the #EmpoweredGirls Campaign remain the best ways for alumnae, current and alumnae parents, grandparents, and friends of the school to maintain and strengthen the mission and future of The Academy of the Holy Cross.

On behalf of the entire Holy Cross community, I extend heartfelt gratitude to all who supported our school and helped make the 2022-2023 school year so successful. In my over 50 years in education, I have never felt the support of a community as strongly as I do now at Holy Cross. Your belief in the mission of the school, your support of the faculty and staff, and your generosity allows Holy Cross to continue to make a difference in the life of every student.

“Education is the art of helping young people to completeness.”
BLESSED BASIL MOREAU

Sincerely,

MISSION STATEMENT

The Academy of the Holy Cross, a Catholic college preparatory school sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Cross since 1868, is dedicated to educating young women in a Christ-centered community which values diversity. The Academy is committed to developing women of courage, compassion and scholarship who responsibly embrace the social, spiritual and intellectual challenges of the world.

A Letter FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear Members of the Holy Cross Community,

Standing once more on that cusp of seasons and semesters at Holy Cross, there is an incredible harmony of promise and fulfillment. Just as the colors and temperatures of our seasons predictably transition, so do the energy and expectations of each semester’s sports, courses, adventures and goals. And the perspective of the Holy Cross cusp is perpetually inspirational and comforting in its persistence.

Often as I arrive at the Academy entrance and work my way to the Circle, I reminisce about my first journey - as a freshman carpool passenger packed in that three-row Chevy station wagon in pressed uniforms and shiny shoes. And I imagine so many others’ first journeys and which parts of our days we fought to keep and which parts we fought to forget. Some fights worked - we got the juke boxes and got rid of the saddle shoes. Those were truly big deals at the time. And, although the stakes are now higher and the issues now less singular, fewer contained to our building and even fewer resolved within four years, our students are just as empowered and engaged as ever. An enduring quality --- we hope our girls will always be looking for just the right fight to fix.

Moving on from shoes and music, our students and alums are now tackling disease, discrimination, prejudice, poverty, war, crime, injustice, abuse and desperation. We find their way through what we saw, whom we met and what we learned just past that Circle. Somehow the issues to be won became more obvious and inviting in a community with those we have learned to love.

We know that the degree and diversity of our girls’ successes are the result of the encouragement and support of our dedicated and skilled faculty, coaches and staff.

The Annual Report reflects the resources required to bridge the financial gap left by the tuition we set to remain available to our students. We know that providing the academic, spiritual and athletic resources to generate classes offered 200+ college acceptances, five NCAA athletic offers, $22 millions in scholarship offers, national recognition for athletic and academic accomplishments.

We have much to be grateful for and much work ahead. For all of us who have made that journey up the long drive to the Circle --- as student, parent, driver, teacher, coach, athlete, camper, worshiper or patron of the arts --- the journey continues. Keep with us or come join us.

Hail from your Daughters, Holy Cross.

WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

In 2022-2023, the Academy recognized a loss of approximately $560,000. This was due in large part to a decrease in enrollment from the budgeted number, while financial aid remained at the budgeted level of over $3.6 million. In addition, the covid relief programs ended, which had supported the school in the previous year, and the school’s investments continued to report a loss. While revenue decreased by over 11% from 2021-2022, expenses remained at approximately the same level as the previous year.

The #EmpoweredGirls Campaign continues to generate funds for the new Athletic and Wellness Center planned to begin construction in the summer of 2024. A major campaign development in 2022-2023 was the $1 million pledge made by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, an important reminder of the ongoing and special relationship between the Sisters and the Academy. Although no Sisters currently work or reside at the Academy, they continue to serve on the Board and remain committed to the mission of the School and to all the students, past and present, who they pray for daily.

Please continue to support the Academy with gifts to our Annual Giving and #EmpoweredGirls Campaign. Your support makes the difference every day for our girls and our families.

This 2022-2023 Annual Report covers contributions to the Academy received between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023. Holy Cross is grateful for the invaluable generosity of our donors, including those who have chosen not to have their names published herein. Thank you for making Holy Cross a priority in your charitable giving.

WAYS OF GIVING

Making a gift to Holy Cross is truly an investment in the future of our students and our school. Our students are doing great things thanks to the generosity of donors – past and present! Please, consider the following ways that help you and Holy Cross.

MAKING YOUR DONATION

You may choose to make your donation by check, by credit card or by ACH or Wire.

Check: Please mail your check to The Academy of the Holy Cross, ATTN: Advancement Office, 4920 Strathmore Ave., Kensington, MD 20895.

Credit Card: Either online at www.academyoftheholycross.org/giving or by calling Denise Hardison at 301-929-6498.

ACH/Wire: Please contact Cassandra Hoye at choye@academyoftheholycross.org for the ACH/Wire instruction.

MATCHING GIFTS

Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees. The impact of your gift maybe doubled! Contact your employer for matching gift information.

BEQUESTS AND TRUSTS

Bequests and charitable trusts are a wonderful way to help the Academy in perpetuity. Contact your financial planner or legal counsel for ways you can help Holy Cross through your will, retirement plan, a charitable remainder or charitable lead trust.

GIFTS OF STOCKS OR APPRECIATED SECURITIES

Gifts of stocks or securities are a great way to receive a tax deduction and eliminate capital gains taxes. Please contact the Advancement Office for transfer instructions to make a gift of appreciated assets. Written correspondence in the form of a letter or email to the Advancement Office indicating that the transfer will be taking place is greatly appreciated for tracking purposes.

UNITED WAY & CFC

The Academy of the Holy Cross is a proud member of both the Combined Federal Campaign and United Way of the Nation’s Capital Area. Please contact the Advancement Office if you have designated your gift through UWNCA #9182 or CFC #83484.

GIVING FROM YOUR IRA

If you are age 70 ½ and have an IRA, consider taking a QCD (Qualified Charitable Distribution) from your account. Take advantage of not paying Medicare or Social Security taxes while making a dramatic impact to Holy Cross. While you should certainly contact your financial planner for advice, here are three steps to make it happen:

1. Use the IRA distribution forms provided by your IRA custodian and a letter to direct that a distribution be made to the Academy of the Holy Cross at the following address: Office of Institutional Advancement – The Academy of the Holy Cross, 4920 Strathmore Avenue – Kensington, MD 20895.

2. Make sure the cover letter specifically request that your IRA custodian (a) memorialize your name and address as the donor of record in connection with this transfer and (b) copy you on the transmittal.

3. Email a copy of your IRA distribution for and your transmittal letter to Cassandra Hoye at choye@academyoftheholycross.org.
