Art, History and Culture April 22 – May 8, 2016 Tour leader: Dr Matthew Laing

Jefferson’s Monticello

Boston, washington & New York Overview The cities of Boston, Washington and New York boast some of the most richly-endowed cultural institutions in the world. These cities are also brimming with history, from the first settlement of Europeans in America, through the struggle for independence and the civil war to the emergence of the United States as a major power in the 19th and 20th centuries. This 17-day tour begins in Boston, scene of the earliest European immigration and a thriving 19th century literary and artistic culture. Over four nights in Washington we witness how the grand aims of the Union are played out in monumental art and architecture. The tour concludes in New York, the greatest city of the 20th century and home to an extraordinary range of cultural sites. Also included are excursions to the ‘gilded age’ mansions of Rhode Island and to Jefferson’s Monticello estate in Virginia. A highlight of the tour is a private before-hours visit of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Accommodation is in comfortable four-star hotels throughout. Some highlights

Moving around New York

Most of our travel from site to site in New York will be in taxies. Taxies are much faster than buses and give us total flexibility in the program. On one or two occasions we will also use the city’s subway system. Please note that there is considerable walking in the New York section of the tour. A moderate degree of walking fitness is essential. Monday May 2 Art Deco and the Harbour

Above: Central Park’s Boathouse Restaurant in its lakeside setting

This morning we explore some of the Art-Deco architecture of New York’s midtown district. We explore icons such as the Chrysler Building, the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and the General Electric Building. We enjoy lunch at Cipriani Dolci, located in the main hall of Grand Central, a magnificent Beaux-Arts building. This afternoon we take a Circle Line harbour cruise, showing us the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Brooklyn Bridge. (B, L)

Below: Frank Lloyd Wright’s last major work – the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum in New York

Tuesday May 3 Fifth Avenue and Central Park

This morning we visit the Frick Collection, a unique museum of European art displayed in the former private home of Pittsburgh entrepreneur Henry Clay Frick. The exquisite taste and refinement of the house belie Frick’s reputation as the archetypical ‘robber baron;’ of the Gilded Age. We continue with a stroll through nearby Central Park, watching New Yorkers enjoy their day. Our visit culminates in lunch at the Central Park Boathouse, surely one of the city’s most pleasant eateries. In the afternoon we visit the Guggenheim Collection. Frank Lloyd Wright’s last building is an icon of 20th century architecture and features world-class exhibitions. This evening we attend a new Broadway musical, selected from the 2015 fall premieres. Overnight New York. (B, L) Wednesday May 4 Metropolitan Museum of ART

This morning a coach takes us to the northern tip of Manhattan, where we visit ‘The Cloisters’, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s medieval collection, housed in a monastery-like structure. After

Boston, washington & New York our guided tour here, we spend the rest of the day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s main campus on Fifth Avenue. This vast collection encompasses just about all known fine and decorative arts from ancient Egypt onwards. After an introductory orientation, we explore the American galleries. You will be free to explore the rest of the museum independently. The late afternoon and evening are free. Music lovers may like to attend a performance at historic Carnegie Hall, just a few minutes from our hotel. Overnight New York. (B) Thursday May 5 Brooklyn and Downtown

This morning a local historian shows us Brooklyn Heights, New York’s best-preserved residential district, with streets of brownstone terraces, historic churches and great views across to Manhattan. For those with the energy, there is the chance to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge at the end of our tour. This afternoon we visit the downtown financial district, walking down Wall Street and visiting the moving September 11 memorial at the World Trade Centre building site. This evening we attend a performance at the Lincoln Centre by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra or the Metropolitan Opera (performance schedules to be advised). Overnight New York (B) Friday May 6 Modern American art

An undoubted highlight of our tour will be this morning’s private tour of MoMA – New York’s famous Museum of Modern Art. A museum lecturer guides us through the museum’s greatest works before the museum opens its doors to the public. Following the tour you have free time to explore the museum’s collections. At lunchtime we head to the Chelsea Food Markets, located in a former Nabisco factory. In the afternoon we visit the newly-opened Whitney Museum of American Art, now located in Chelsea. The museum holds a definitive collection of paintings by Edward Hopper, and other important modernist pieces. There is also time to stroll the High Line, an innovative urban park created from a disused industrial rail line running above the Chelsea district. Overnight New York (B)

Boston, washington & New York Saturday May 7 Midtown and the Cloisters

This morning we join our MAS guide for a tour of the Rockefeller Centre, whose 11 buildings comprise one of the most remarkable architectural projects of the 20th century. Our tour culminates at the “Top of the Rock”, the observation deck at the top of the 70-storey GE Building which is the centrepiece of the Rockefeller Centre. The area is built to resemble the deck of an ocean liner and offers spectacular views over the city. This evening we enjoy a farewell meal at a New York restaurant. (B, D) Sunday May 8 Departure

On our final morning you are free to relax. There is the option of visiting the JP Morgan Library and Museum, one of the world's greatest private collections of artistic, literary, and musical works, established by banker and voracious collector Pierpont Morgan. Mid-afternoon we transfer to New York’s JFK airport, where the tour ends.

Boston, washington & New York visa requirements In order to enter the United States all travellers are now required to complete an online form, the US government’s Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (or ESTA). Full details are available at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov (image right). In making the application you will need details of your arriving flight to the USA and also need to provide the name and address of the first hotel we are staying at. The first hotel for this tour is: Hilton Downtown/Faneuil Hall 89 Broad St, Boston, MA 02110, United States Phone: +1 617-556-0006 The cost of the ESTA is currently USD $14 and you should receive an authorisation immediately. Print a copy of your ESTA and carry it with you on your flight.

USA travel advice Overall, the United States is a safe place to travel, but you should take sensible precautions. There is no need to feel concerned while on tour – just be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings at all times. Tipping is widespread in the United States, and often baffling and slightly distasteful for Australian visitors. Every service provider from a taxi driver to a hairdresser expects a tip of 1520%. Whether you agree or not with tipping as a principle, it will be expected and as a visitor you will find yourself reminded about ‘gratuities’ in a most unsubtle fashion. Group tips to restaurants, drivers and local guides are included in the tour cost. The cost of medical services in the USA is very high and it is essential you have good insurance coverage. Check carefully the limits to coverage for medical expenses, disruption of your travel plans, theft, repair and replacement of luggage on your policy. If you are not satisfied with them, look for another policy or talk to the insurance company about having limits raised. This is especially important for older travellers, as many policies limit the amount paid for medical claims according to your age.

Physical fitness for this tour Academy Travel’s itineraries avoid whistle-stop coach visits, but offer instead lots of walking and extended site visits. We do not have age limits on our tours, but we ask you instead to consider carefully your ability to meet the physical demands of the tour. You should be able to:  walk for 2-3 kilometres at a moderate to slow pace with only short breaks  stand for a reasonable length of time listening to explanations in museums  negotiate stairs and escalators into and out of subway stations  get on and off a large coach unassisted  move your luggage a short distance if required This tour moves at a reasonable pace with extended stays in each city. We are happy to accommodate the needs of any traveller with a physical disability as far as reasonably possible, but it may not be possible to undertake all activities. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to discuss the demands of the tour in more detail.

Special experiences A private viewing of the Sistine Chapel or the Museum of Modern Art in New York? Tickets to a sold-out performance of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra? Many of our tours feature top-flight events not usually offered on group tours.

Expert tour leaders Expert leadership by NADFAS and ADFAS-approved lecturers, who combine academic expertise with a genuine passion for the places you visit. Under their expert guidance you see rather than just look, hear rather than just listen and understand rather than just observe. Your travel experience is transformed.

In-depth information With extensive printed tour materials, including detailed tour notes, destination guides, and daily programs, you’ll build up a coherent understanding of the country you’re visiting, not just a fragmented set of facts. These materials are also available in electronic format.
