Sicily Island of Myth and history November 18 – December 3, 2016 Tour leader: Sue Rollin
Sicily
Island of Myth and history
Overview Sicily has a great deal to offer as a destination for ADFAS members. The island’s history and culture are a unique meld of Mediterranean civilizations, encompassing ancient Phoenician, Greek and Roman periods, as well as more recent Byzantine, Arab, Norman and Spanish inhabitation. The setting for this long and distinctive history is unmatched – the towering volcano of Mount Etna which dominates the east coast, rich rolling hillsides in the interior and rugged limestone cliffs along the coast. Very few places can match Sicily for the sheer diversity and beauty of its sites all within a relatively compact area. Popular NADFAS lecturer Sue Rollin has created a unique 16day journey through the history and culture of Sicily, designed especially for ADFAS members. The tour surveys Sicily’s immense cultural heritage, from the Ancient Greeks to the Arabs and Normans of the Middle Ages and the flourishing Baroque of more recent centuries. As well as an in-depth look at famous historic sites, Sue has included out-of-the way villages and country estates, where fine food and ancient traditions still prevail. The journey has all the characteristics of an ADFAS Travel tour – extended stays in small, friendly hotels which have been personally inspected by our staff, background talks before site visits and a maximum group size of just 20. There are plenty of options for extending your travel, with extra stays in Rome, at Taormina or a Malta Extension Tour before the main trip, all easily arranged.

Detailed Itinerary All breakfasts included. Included lunches and dinners are indicated by the letters (L) and (D). Friday, 18 November 2016 Arrival Taormina
Meet your tour leader Sue Rollin on arrival at Catania airport to commence the tour. Transfer together by private coach to our hotel in Taormina. In the early evening we meet for welcome drinks and a light dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight San Domenico Palace, Taormina (D) Saturday, 19 November 2016 Taormina
The chic resort town of Taormina offers a breathtaking landscape dense with outstanding archaeology. After a talk in the hotel we stroll through the town to the majestic GrecoRoman Theatre. The second largest ancient theatre in Sicily after Siracusa, the Teatro Antico was built in the 4th century BC and expanded to an amphitheatre by the Romans, who also added a partial roof, now destroyed. With Etna serving as a dramatic backdrop, this theatre is still in use today. The rest of the day is at leisure for you to explore at your own pace, perhaps shopping in the lovely little boutiques. We gather for dinner in the hotel this evening. Overnight Taormina (B, D) Sunday, 20 November 2016 Mount Etna
Today we travel to the summit of Mount Etna, Europe’s largest and most spectacular volcano that is still very active. Assuming conditions are safe we will explore the south side of the volcano, travelling by coach, cable car and finally jeep to a height of 2,900 metres. The landscape and the views are unforgettable. The land around volcano offers rich soil, good for the production of local wine Etna Rosso. We head to a renowned local winery for lunch and wine tasting, taking a tour of the cantina and vineyards before returning to Taormina in the later afternoon. This evening is at leisure. Overnight Taormina (B, L and wine tasting)

Mount Etna – Suitable Clothing For the trip to the summit of Mount Etna, it is usually cold with temperatures reaching as low as 5 º-10 º C so it is important you have suitable clothing including warm gloves, winter headgear and a scarf along with a warm waterproof jacket. You will need shoes with a good grip as you will be required to walk on uneven and often steep ground. Monday, 21 November 2016 Palazzolo acreide
Above: the seaside village of Siracusa
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Palazzolo Acreide combines an archaeological Greek heritage with fine examples of Baroque architecture. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times and around 664-663 BC, Corinthian settlers founded Akrai. We visit the archaeological ruins before continuing on to the island of Ortigia - the historic centre of ancient Siracuse and today also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The picturesque island of Ortigia is crammed with temples, castles, palazzi, churches and a bustling market. This evening we enjoy a dinner together at an excellent local restaurant. Overnight Algilà Ortigia Charme Hotel, Siracusa (B, D)
Below: detail of Caravaggio's The Burial of St. Lucy and chocolate, Sicilian style, in Modica
Tuesday, 22 November 2016 Ancient Siracusa
Siracusa was the most important Greek city of antiquity, a formidable competitor of Athens. Today we explore the area with a local guide visiting the main archaeological sites of the town. Highlights of our visit include the famed theatre of Siracusa, the altar of Hieron II, and the ancient quarries as well as the recently discovered Byzantine era Jewish baths which are over 1,500 years old. We also visit the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia to admire Caravaggio's The Burial of St. Lucy. The late afternoon and evening are at leisure. Overnight Siracusa (B) Wednesday, 23 November 2016 Sicilian baroque AND CHOCOLATE
This morning we take a round trip of the south-east tip of Sicily, visiting the towns of Noto, Ragusa Ibla and Modica. These towns are famed for their exuberant ‘Sicilian Baroque’ architecture, created after a devastating earthquake of 1693
Sicily Island of Myth and history destroyed the earlier towns. Noto was one of the most powerful colonies of Magna Graecia, and its grand Greek theatre and endless ruins are a testament to its former glory. In Modica we visit the town and head to the renown Caffe dell'Arte for a lesson in the art of chocolate making, Sicilian style. Overnight Siracusa (B) Thursday, 24 November 2016 Piazza Armerina
Piazza Armerina is where you can see the most magnificent mosaics in all of Western Europe. Art lovers travel from all over the world to see the ruins of the extraordinary Roman villa, the Villa Romana del Casale, which houses an impressive display of well preserved mosaics created by masterful craftsmanship. They depict hunting scenes and everyday life, and there's even one of a girl athlete with stitches on her leg. We stop for lunch along the way in the town of Caltagirone, known for its ceramics. We arrive in Agrigento, located on the south coast of Sicily, in the late afternoon. Dinner tonight is in our hotel. Overnight Villa Athena, Agrigento (B, D) Friday, 25 November 2016 Valley of the temples
The Valley of the Temples is home to the best-preserved temples in the world. The most impressive is the Temple of Concord, which is in near-intact condition. The rubble that once formed the temple of Zeus was thought to be the largest temple in the world, and the surviving four columns topped with remains of a pediment and entablature of the Temple of Castor and Pollux is one of the symbols of Sicily. Our hotel has special access to the site, that we visit with a local guide, along with the archaeological museum to see the extraordinary collection of artefacts from the ancient Akragas and the environs. The most impressive remains are the gargantuan telamoni, or giants, as tall as columns that held up the temples. We then head into the countryside to have lunch at an excellent fattoria, sampling the local organic produce and enjoying an olive oil tasting. We return to Agrigento late in the afternoon and the evening is at leisure. Overnight Agrigento (B, L) Saturday, 26 November 2016 SelinuNte and the dancing Satyr
This morning we travel along the south coast of Sicily to
Above: stunning Late Antique mosaics in the recently re-opened Villa Romana, Piazza Armerina Below: Temple of Concordia in the ‘Valley of the Temples’, Agrigento
Sicily Island of Myth and history Selinunte (ancient Selinus). At its peak, Selinus had a population of 25,000 and the extensive ruins give us a good idea of both civic and religious life in a Greek colony. We then stop to see the over life-size Dancing Satyr of Mazara del Vallo, a stunning Greek bronze statue that was found by a Sicilian fisherman in 1998, in the waters of the Mediterranean. We return to Agrigento in the afternoon and enjoy dinner in the hotel. Overnight Agrigento (B, D) Sunday, 27 November 2016 Norman Castles OF Sicily
Today we set out to further explore the Sicilian countryside, with its rolling wheat hills, tortuous river bends, centuries-old farmhouses, and magnificent medieval castles. Our first stop is the castle of Mussomeli which rises atop of a large limestone crag at over 700 metres above sea level and towers over the valley below. Built by Manfredi Chiaramonte in 1370, the castle was built into the rock and is impressively impregnable thanks to the precipitous drops on most sides, the thick walls and narrow windows. We continue on to the pleasant medieval town of Caccamo, whose castle is one of the most spectacularly positioned in Sicily. Built in the 12th century by a Norman Knight Matthew Bonellus, it was subsequently enlarged and reinforced by Manfredi Chiaramonte in the early 1300s. We have lunch in the town before continuing on to Palermo. This evening we have dinner at an excellent local restaurant. Overnight Hotel Piazza Borsa (B, L, D) Monday, 28 November 2016 Palermo
Palermo is a colourful city, with the atmosphere of North Africa or perhaps Asia rather than of Europe. Once conquered by the Phoenicians, Arabs, and Spanish, Palermo today bears witness to its rich past, from Byzantine mosaics and crumbling baroque buildings, to Arabian foodie delicacies in La Vucciria and Ballarò markets. Splendid medieval churches, archaeological gems and first-class museums are what Sicily's capital city does best. Today we tour some of the main historic sites of the old city, including the Norman Palace and Palatine Chapel, with its gold mosaics and the Byzantine-influenced church of ‘La Martorana’. In the afternoon we visit the Moorish inspired 12th century palace of La Zisa and stroll through some of the markets and characteristic back streets of the old city. This evening is at leisure. Overnight Palermo (B)

Below: the impressive mosaics found in Monreale Cathedral
Sicily Island of Myth and history Tuesday, 29 November 2016 GLITTERING Monreale
After a talk in the hotel we head off to see the impressive cathedral and abbey of Monreale, in the hills overlooking Palermo. Founded by the Norman King William II in the 12th century, the superb architecture and vast mosaic decoration are testament to the aspirations of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily. We spend the morning viewing the cathedral and enjoying the surrounding medieval hill town. The afternoon is free either to return to Palermo to shop and/or visit other sites independently. Overnight Palermo (B) Wednesday, 30 November 2016 Cefal첫
This morning we travel along the north coast to Cefal첫, a fishing town dominated by a splendid Norman cathedral, reputedly built after King Roger II survived a shipwreck near the town. Its imposing size dominates the landscape of the town, while the interior is embellished with the first in a series of brilliant mosaics found in this part of Sicily. We travel to a nearby town for a Sicilian cooking lesson, for those interested, afterwards enjoying lunch. We return to Palermo in the late afternoon and have an evening at leisure. Overnight Palermo (B, L) Thursday, 1 December 2016 Mozia and Segesta
Today we take a ferry to Mozia where, among the salt pans, we explore the ruins of the former Carthaginian settlement. The island also houses a small museum with some unique pieces. We continue on to Segesta, an evocative ruin in a hilltop location. Sacked in the 4th century BC and later abandoned, this rugged setting was home to the mysterious Elymian people. The theatre and temple here are truly memorable, and have inspired artists and writers for centuries. In the late afternoon we head back to Palermo. Overnight Palermo (B, L) Friday, 2 December 2016 Palermo AND THE LEOPARD
Today we continue our exploration of Palermo visiting the cathedral, built on the site of an early Christian basilica, which was later turned into a mosque by Arab rulers. We also visit the Church of Gesu with its impressive interior that is a triumph of
Above: the fishing town Cefal첫 Below: we spend the afternoon tracing the life of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa
Sicily Island of Myth and history baroque extravagance. This afternoon we trace the life of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. He is the key chronicler of the rise and fall of Sicily’s aristocracy, most particularly in his celebrated The Leopard – both celebration of an elegy to Sicily’s feudal past. We visit the palace today to meet with the writer’s nephew and adopted son, Gioacchino Lanza Tomasi and his wife Nicoletta, the current Duchess of Palma. The family home conserves an important collection of Tomasi di Lampedusa memorabilia, including manuscripts of his works – most of which were only published posthumously. After an aperitivo with our hosts, we walk to an excellent local restaurant for dinner. Overnight Palermo (B, aperitivo, D) Saturday, 3 December 2016 Departure
On the final day of the tour there is a transfer to Palermo airport timed to coincide with departing flights. Depending on flight schedule there may also be time for some sightseeing today. (B)

Malta Extension Tour November 14 - 18, 2016 A trip to Sicily provides the ideal opportunity to enjoy a short pre-tour excursion to nearby Malta. This small island archipelago is often overlooked as a travel destination (much to the delight of those who know what it has to offer and like to keep it quiet). Malta’s location in the Mediterranean gave it strategic importance over the centuries and it has been conquered by Sicilians, Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, the Knights of St John, the French and the British in succession. This has endowed the small island nation with an eclectic heritage, a quirky character and unique charm. In an area of just 316 sq km you can view prehistoric temples and Baroque architecture, hear North African and Arabic influences in the language and sample the Sicilian-inspired cuisine.
Extension Cost & Bookings The cost of the Malta tour is $1,850 per person twin share (single supplement for full use of a double room is $545). This price includes: 4 nights’ accommodation with breakfast at the centrally located 5-star Grand Hotel Excelsior Day tours, entrances and two lunches as detailed above Transfers to and from the airport in Valletta and the internal flight from Valletta to Catania (via Rome) to join the main tour Should you wish to join the Malta excursion please talk to consultant Hannah Kleboe when you book for the Sicily tour.
