Lyon to Berlin Art & Design in Europe’s ‘second cities’ October 20 – November 5, 2016 Tour leader: Dr Nick Gordon

Art Trails: Lyon to Berlin Art & Design in Europe’s ‘second cities’

Overview Europe’s art collections extend well beyond its current capital cities and reflect the tumultuous history of numerous duchies, kingdoms and independent states, each of which has sought to establish its own cultural legacy. This tour takes you to the superb galleries and museums that have resulted from this desire for lasting greatness, and explores how the history of each city is reflected in its unique collections. The tour ranges from Roman antiquities, to major collections of Old Masters and Modern Art, contemporary architecture and design. The tour begins in Lyon, the ancient capital of Gaul which rose to become modern France’s second city on the wealth generated by its silk industry. Lyon’s Gallo-Roman museum is one of the most significant collections of antiquities in France, and its excellent art galleries are the legacy of the silk magnates. From Lyon, we travel to Burgundy whose capital, Dijon, was one of Medieval Europe’s cultural centres: the Dukes of Burgundy were important backers of the Cluniac and Cistercian monks and the patrons most instrumental in the emergence of the Renaissance in northern Europe. In Basel, we enjoy how spectacularly a medieval citystate has reinvented itself as an art-Mecca, with fine public and private collections in galleries designed by leading contemporary architects. We continue travelling north-east through Germany, taking in the excellent collections of Frankfurt and trend-setting Leipzig, as well as visiting the World Heritage-listed Bauhaus sites in Weimar and Dessau. The tour ends in Berlin, whose galleries and museums were developed to give a new empire a capital to rival Paris, London and St Petersburg.

The carefully planned itinerary balances guided visits with illustrated background talks and time to enjoy galleries independently. Superior 4star accommodation in city centres makes it easy to relax and enjoy these destinations’ other benefits, while jaunts through the countryside provide you with time to enjoy the world beyond the city limits.

Art Trails: Lyon to Berlin Art & Design in Europe’s ‘second cities’

Detailed ItinerARY All breakfasts included. Included lunches and dinners are indicated by the letters (L) and (D). Thursday 20 October Historic Lyon and its Murals

The tour begins in the hotel lounge in the early afternoon, where Dr Nick Gordon will meet you. We stroll through the World Heritage listed historic districts of Lyon, with their well-preserved architecture and beautiful medieval laneways. We also visit the murals decorating the city: there are more than 60 very large and often playful murals around the city, illustrating aspects of social life in the neighbourhoods. After dinner in a local restaurant, the evening is at leisure. Overnight Lyon (D) Friday 21 October Old Lyon

Above: one of the many trompe l’oeil murals of Lyon Below: The theatre of Lugdunum; the medieval Hôtel Dieu at Beaune, commissioned by Chancellor Rolin (whose portrait by Jan van Eyck is in the Louvre).

Lyon (Lugdunum) was the thriving capital of Roman Gaul and the birthplace of the Emperor Claudius - who is depicted in the mural of famous Lyonnais - and Caracalla. This morning we have a guided visit of the Roman ruins – the oldest in France - and the Gallo-Roman Museum, which has a fine collection of Roman and Gallic archaeological finds from the area, including jewellery, mosaics, sculpture and objects from everyday life. After a welcome lunch in an excellent restaurant, we visit the Museum of Textiles and Decorative Arts, which has one of the world’s largest collections of textiles, and a strong focus on the development of the silk industry on which the city grew in the 19th century. Evening at leisure; overnight Lyon. (B, L) Saturday 22 October Art in Lyon

After a talk in the hotel this morning, we visit the Museum of Fine Art, which has a diverse collection of antiquities, object d’art, and an excellent collection of painting and sculpture from Old Masters to modern painting from Impressionism to Leger, Picasso and Bacon. It also has the world’s second largest collection of Rodin. In the afternoon, we visit the Museum dedicated to the Lumière brothers, the inventors of modern filmmaking, and there is an optional visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art situated across the beautiful Parc de la Tête d’Or from the city centre. Evening at leisure; overnight Lyon. (B) Sunday 23 October Cluny and Burgundy

We depart this morning for Dijon, the medieval capital of Burgundy. On the way, we visit the ruins of Cluny Abbey, the headquarters of the influential Cluniac monks who dominated Europe’s pilgrim routes. We continue onto lunch in the Burgundian wine region, and then to Beaune to visit the Hospices. This 15th century charitable institution is one of the best surviving examples of medieval French architecture and is now a museum, containing medieval tapestries and a beautiful altarpiece by Rogier van der Weyden. Continuing on to nearby Dijon, the evening is at leisure. (B, L)

Monday 24 October The Dukes of Burgundy

The Dukes of Burgundy were among the most sophisticated, powerful and richest men in medieval Europe. At its greatest extent, their territory was larger than the Kingdom of France – indeed, they had appropriated large parts of France by playing the French and English off each other in the Hundred Years War. This morning, after a talk in the hotel, we visit the Ducal Palace, which has been the Museum of Fine Art since the 18th century. After a break for lunch, we visit the Charterhouse of Champmol, built as an extravagant burial chapel for the Dukes of Burgundy in the 14th century and decorated with works by Claus Sluter, one of the finest Gothic sculptors. The evening is at leisure. (B) TuEsday 25 October Besançon

This morning we depart for Basel, stopping to visit Besancon. This small, beautifully well-preserved city is one of France’s hidden gems, although it is the capital of Franche-Comte and near the routes connecting Germany to Spain and the UK to Switzerland. After touring the city, we have an extended break for lunch and you may wish to visit the city’s museums, such as the Museum of Time inside the Renaissance Palace of Cardinal Grenvelle, Emperor Charles V’s prime minister, or just enjoy the French provincial ambience. In the mid afternoon, we continue on to Basel. Dinner at a local restaurant; Overnight Basel (B, D) Wednesday 26 October Art and Design in Basel

Basel was a small independent state in the Middle Ages ruled by a PrinceBishop and an important intellectual centre in the Renaissance; it’s transformation into an art-Mecca is quite recent and extraordinarily successful. After a talk in the hotel, we visit the Museum Tinguely, a gallery designed by Mario Botta on the banks of the Rhine as a setting for Jean Tinguely’s kinetic sculptures. In the afternoon, we visit the internationally renowned Vitra Design Museum, which is housed in a building by Frank Gehry, and the Fondation Beyeler, an excellent collection of modern art in a Renzo Piano designed gallery set in quiet parkland on the fringes of Basel. Evening at leisure; Overnight Basel (B) Thursday 27 October Künstmuseum and Contemporary Art

This morning, we visit the Kunstmuseum Basel, which reopens in April 2016 after substantial renovations and the addition of a new wing. The collections are outstanding and cover from the 15th century to the present. In the mid afternoon, there is an optional walking to visit some of Basel’s commercial galleries, many of which are internationally respected and closely linked to the world of Art Basel. Evening at leisure; overnight Basel (B) Friday 28 October Freiburg and Frieder-Burda

This morning we depart for Frankfurt. We stop to visit Freiburg, the pretty

medieval town whose beautiful Gothic spire was described by Jacob Burkhardt as the ‘most beautiful spire on Earth’. After touring the town, we break for lunch, before continuing on to the Museum Frieder-Burda, near Baden-Baden. The museum, designed by Richard Meier, contains the private collection of a German entrepreneur of the printing industry, which focuses on colourful classical modernism and contemporary art. Continuing on to Frankfurt, we arrive in the early evening. Dinner in the hotel; overnight Frankfurt (B, D)

Above: the view from Freiburg Below: Frankfurt’s Städel Musuem; and Kandinsky’s design for the cover of The Bauhaus Magazine

Saturday 29 October Das StÄdel

Today we visit the Städel, one of the oldest and largest public art collections in Germany, for its spectacular array of masterpieces spanning 700 years of Western art. We begin with a tour of its modern collection, which includes works by Degas, Ernst, Dix, Renoir and Münch. After a break for lunch, we continue our tour with the Old Masters, including paintings by Jan van Eyck, the Cranachs, Vermeer and Rembrandt. The mid-afternoon is at leisure, and we meet in the hotel in the early evening for a musical performance (TBA). Overnight Frankfurt (B) Sunday 30 October Applied arts in Frankfurt

Frankfurt’s museums have gained an international reputation for their collections and for their innovative displays. This morning we have a guided visit of the Museum of Applied Arts, which reopened in 2013 after modification of the building designed by Richard Meier. Its collection of applied and decorative arts includes European, Islamic and Asian works as well as a number of carefully reconstructed period rooms, showcasing interior design and decorative art. The afternoon is at leisure and you may wish to explore some of Frankfurt’s other excellent museums, such as the Museum of Architecture or the Natural History Museum. Overnight Frankfurt (B) Monday 31 October Weimar

The Bauhaus was founded in Weimar in 1919 by Walter Gropius, who called on a range of avant-garde artists and designers, such as Kandinsky and Klee, to join him. Although the Bauhaus was forced to move to Dessau in 1925 – the municipal council cut its funding and forced its teachers to resign – a number of Bauhaus buildings remain in Weimar, along with an excellent museum. Today we depart Frankfurt for Leipzig, stopping at Weimar for a guided visit of the Bauhaus Museum and to see the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Bauhaus buildings and monuments. In the mid-afternoon, we continue on to Leipzig. Dinner in the hotel; evening at leisure. Overnight Leipzig (B, D) Tuesday 1 November Leipzig

In recent times Leipzig has undergone a cultural revival and is increasingly rated as one of the trend-setting destinations in Europe, not least because of its thriving arts culture. This morning we go on a walking tour of the old

centre, focussing on Leipzig’s musical heritage, then, after a break for morning tea, we visit the Museum of Fine Arts, whose collection ranges from Rogier van der Weyden to Max Lieberman and Ernst. In the afternoon we explore contemporary Leipzig with a guided tour through the artists’ studios and galleries at the Spinnerei – a former cotton mill that has become one of the ‘coolest’ places in Europe’s contemporary art scene. The evening is at leisure. Overnight Leipzig (B) Wednesday 2 November Dessau and Potsdam

We depart Leipzig this morning for Berlin, by way of Dessau and Potsdam. Dessau has some of the best-preserved Bauhaus buildings in Germany, including the Masters’ Houses, the home and workplace of Gropius, Kandinsky and Mies van der Rohe. After a guided visit of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed buildings of Dessau, we have lunch in a Bauhaus restaurant overlooking the Elba River. In the early afternoon, we continue on to Berlin, stopping to visit Sanssouci, the rococo summer palace and sumptuous gardens of Frederick the Great. In the late afternoon, we continue to Berlin, a short drive away. Evening at leisure. Overnight Berlin (B, L) Thursday 3 November Modern Art and Design in Berlin

Berlin was the final base of the Bauhaus before it was closed down by the Nazi Party in 1933. Little survives of its activities in Berlin, although its influence has been enduring. This morning, after a talk in the hotel, we visit the Museum Berggruen, which has a fine collection of Picasso, Klee, Giacometti and Matisse, and the nearby Georg Kolbe Museum, the house and studio of the early 20th-century sculptor and favourite of Mies van der Rohe. We continue our focus on modernism in Berlin in the early afternoon when we visit the Bauhaus Archive, with its particularly fine collection of Bauhaus material. The mid-afternoon to early evening is at leisure, before we meet in the hotel to go to a performance by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Overnight Berlin (B) Friday 4 November Old and New Art in Berlin

Berlin’s art collections are extraordinary. This morning we have a guided visit of the Gemäldegalerie with its amazing collection of Old Masters including Jan van Eyck, Vermeer, Caravaggio, Titian, Raphael and Rubens. In the mid afternoon, we visit the Berlinische Galerie for its excellent collection of art in and from Berlin from 1870 to the present, entwining the art and history of a late blooming capital. We meet again in the early evening for a farewell meal in an excellent restaurant. Overnight Berlin (B, D) Saturday 5 November Departure

Our tour ends today. Transfers are available to those who have booked their flights through Academy Travel to Berlin Tegel Airport. (B) Right from top: Rembrandt, Self portrait in a beret, in Berlin’s Gemäldegalerie; the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin, designed by Walter Gropius; Georg Kolbe’s statue Morning in the Barcelona-Pavillon of the house museum devoted to the artist

Like-minded groups Share your journey with fellow travellers who are in tune with your way of seeing the world. A maximum of 20 participants – not too small and not too large – creates a convivial atmosphere.

Long stays Perhaps the most appealing feature of our program. No whistlestop tours, no 7.00am departures, day after day. In most destinations we enjoy three or four nights to really get to know the place.

Special experiences A private viewing of the Sistine Chapel or the Museum of Modern Art in New York? Tickets to a sold-out performance of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra? Many of our tours feature top-flight events not usually offered on group tours.

Expert tour leaders Our tour leaders combine academic expertise with a genuine passion for the places you visit. Under their expert guidance you see rather than just look, hear rather than just listen and understand rather than just observe. Your travel experience is transformed.

In-depth information With extensive printed tour materials, including detailed tour notes, destination guides, and daily programs, you’ll build up a coherent understanding of the country you’re visiting, not just a fragmented set of facts. These materials are also available in electronic format.
