Since medieval times the hill has represented Lithuanian resistance to oppression but the tradition of placing large crosses on the hill is widely believed to have begun following the unsuccessful 1831 rebellion against the Russian occupation. Over time, the site has evolved into a memorial and is remarkable for the sheer number, variety and artistry of the crosses erected. The baltic states & russia sunday 10 april to St petersburg

After a leisurely morning we checkout and travel to the railway station to board our train for St Petersburg this afternoon. We have booked first class seating for the journey of approximately seven hours with light meals and beverages available for purchase on the train. Entry formalities into Russia are completed on board the train. Upon arrival into St Petersburg late this evening we transfer to our hotel. Overnight St Petersburg (B) Monday 11 April Touring st Petersburg

This morning we depart by coach on a city tour of St Petersburg. Our first port of call is the Peter and Paul Fortress. Built by Peter the Great in 1703, it is the first and oldest landmark in St. Petersburg. Several buildings are contained within the fortress, the Peter and Paul Cathedral being the most notable as it contains the tombs of almost all the Russian rulers from Peter the Great. Tsar Nicholas II and his family were finally laid to rest here in July 1998 on the 80th anniversary of their executions. We visit St Isaac’s Cathedral, whose gilded dome dominates the St Petersburg skyline while its facades are decorated in sculpture and red granite columns, and the interiors adorned with detailed mosaic icons, paintings and columns of lapis lazuli and malachite. Overnight St Petersburg (B) tuesday 12 April The hermitage museum

For most people St Petersburg is inexorably connected with its great art museum, the Hermitage, housed in the former residence of the Tsars, the Winter Palace. Built for Tsarina Elizabeth by the Italian-born architect Rastrelli, the Winter Palace was a winter residence of the Tsars until 1904, when increasing unrest forced Nicholas II and his family to retreat to Tsarskoe Selo. During World War I it was used as a hospital for invalids. In July 1917 the Provisional Government took over the palace as its headquarters, and this led in turn to its storming by the Bolsheviks who nationalised the collection. Our day is spent uncovering the many galleries and exploring the amazing collection housed in this extraordinary museum. Overnight St Petersburg (B) wednesday 13 april Catherine’s palace

This morning we drive the short distance to Tsarskoe Selo, formerly Pushkin, where we visit magnificent Catherine’s Palace. Built for Tsarina Elizabeth by Rastrelli in 1752 in the rococo style, it was named Catherine in honour of her mother, Catherine l, wife of Peter the Great. The palace was badly damaged during the German occupation of World War ll, leaving only a hollow shell behind, but it has since been lovingly restored. Inside the palace, our tour takes us through many of the grand state rooms including legendary Amber Room which was restored largely with German funds and re-opened in 2004. We break for lunch at Podvorye Restaurant, located in a typical Russian log house and serving traditional Russian cuisine. After lunch we explore Pavlovsk Park, designed as a Images left: the dome of St Isaac’s Cathedral on Palace Square; Portrait of Tsar Nicholas II which hangs in the Nicholas Hall of the Hermitage museum; and the grand Catherine's Palace in Tsarskoe Selo

classic English landscaped garden and one of the most beautiful park ensembles in Europe. Before returning to St Petersburg this afternoon we stop at the Leningrad Blockade Memorial which poignantly evokes the 900-day siege of Leningrad (1941-1944) and acts as an important reminder of great hardships endured by its people during World War II. Overnight St Petersburg (B, L) Thursday 14 april Artists and poets

Our day starts at the museum of Anna Akhmatova, one of Russia’s greatest poets, who lived most of her life in St Petersburg and whose life and poetry reflects the tragedy that befell the Russian people during the wars, the Revolution, and the years of Stalinist repression. We continue to the distinctive Russian style, multi-domed Church of the Spilled Blood. The elaborately decorated church was erected on the site where Alexander II was mortally wounded by the anti-monarchist revolutionary organisation, People’s Will in 1881. The exterior draws heavily from St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow contradicting the influence of western architecture prevalent in St Petersburg at the time. The interior is covered with an outstanding array of mosaics depicting scenes from Holy Scripture and the patron saints of the Romanovs. This afternoon we visit the Russian Museum, which was opened to the public in 1898 by Tsar Nicholas ll and, along with the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, contains the finest collection of Russian art in the world. Overnight St Petersburg (B) friday 15 april At leisure

Today is at leisure to further explore St Petersburg. Overnight St Petersburg (B) saTurday 16 april To Moscow

After a relaxed morning, we check out of the hotel and transfer to St Petersburg railway station where we board the fast train for our four hour journey to Moscow. On arrival we transfer to our hotel situated in the heart of the city. Dinner is in the hotel this evening. Overnight Moscow (B, L on the train, D) sunday 17 april Touring moscow

Our touring commences with a visit to the iconic Red Square, a vast cobbled area flanked by some of Moscow’s most famous sites, including St Basil’s Cathedral with its extravagant and brightly coloured onion domes, commissioned by Ivan the Terrible and built between 1555 and 1561. Also in Red Square is Lenin’s Mausoleum, where the former leader’s body remains on display to the public, and GUM department store with its elaborate façade and designer stores having replaced the queues of the Soviet era. Today we also visit the New Tretyakov Gallery, home to the premier collection of Russian 20th-century avant-garde artists including Chagall, Kandinsky and Malevich. Overnight Moscow (B) Images right: despair personified at the Leningrad Blockade Memorial; Church of the Spilled Blood, St Petersburg; and the elaborate façade of the GUM department store, Moscow

The baltic states & russia monday 18 april The kremlin

Today we visit the Kremlin, seat of the Tsars, headquarters of the Soviet Union and now the residence of President Vladimir Putin. Since its foundation in 1156, the Kremlin has been a symbol of power of the State. We visit some of the churches in the Cathedral Square, among them the most important church in Moscow, the Cathedral of the Assumption. Also in the Kremlin complex is the State Armory, which showcases the wealth accumulated by Russian tsars over many centuries and the Diamond Fund, which boasts among its jewels the famous Orlov diamond presented to Catherine the Great by her lover Count Grigory Orlov, as well as the Shah Diamond given to Tsar Nicholas I by Shah Mirza. Overnight Moscow (B, L) tuesday 19 april The metro and Pushkin

No visit to Moscow is complete without a ride on its famous underground, the metro, and this morning we see some of the elegant stations decorated in frescoes and lined with marble. Construction work on the metro began in the early 1930s, during the period of Stalin’s first five year plan. Nikita Khrushchev was one of the men entrusted with building a metro that would serve as a showcase for socialism. It was declared that ‘the whole country will build the metro’. Some of the Soviet Union’s finest artists were employed to decorate the metro. Exiting the metro, we visit the Pushkin Museum, famous for its impressionist and post-impressionist paintings as well as its large selection of European works from the Renaissance onwards and a large array of statuary. A gentle walk along the Garden Boulevards through Moscow’s exclusive housing areas leads us to our farewell lunch at the Pushkin Café, an elegant Russian restaurant in a converted baroque mansion. Overnight Moscow (B, L) wednesday 20 april departure

Flights depart Moscow throughout the day. Passengers booking their return flights from Australia through Academy Travel will be transferred to the airport for their departure. (B)

Additional travel AND stopovers We are more than happy to arrange additional travel either before or after the tour dates. Stopovers on the outbound or return flight are also possible for those wishing to break their journey. Please contact Hannah Kleboe on 02 9235 0023 to discuss your requirements.

Special experiences A private viewing of the Sistine Chapel or the Museum of Modern Art in New York? Tickets to a sold-out performance of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra? Many of our tours feature top-flight events not usually offered on group tours.

Expert tour leaders Our tour leaders combine academic expertise with a genuine passion for the places you visit. Under their expert guidance you see rather than just look, hear rather than just listen and understand rather than just observe. Your travel experience is transformed.

In-depth information With extensive printed tour materials, including detailed tour notes, destination guides, and daily programs, you’ll build up a coherent understanding of the country you’re visiting, not just a fragmented set of facts. These materials are also available in electronic format.
