Lakes and villas of northern Italy

April 21 – May 7, 2016 Tour leader: Dr Nick Gordon

Villa Balbianello on Lake Como

Lakes and villas of northern Italy Overview Since Roman times, well-to-do Italians have sought to ‘get away from it all’ by building beautifully sited and exquisitely designed countryside residences. The design and construction of these villas often involved the finest artists and architects of the day. This 17-day tour begins on the shores of Lake Como. We follow a circular route around northern Italy, visiting the foothills of the Apennines in EmiliaRomagna with their medieval towns and contemporary villas, and then travel to the Veneto where we admire the Renaissance country houses and palaces of Andrea Palladio. The tour concludes on Lake Maggiore. The tour makes the most of the spectacular spring colours of pre-Alpine Italy and the region’s culinary delights. Accommodation is in superior four and five star boutique hotels. Most of the time is spent in small lakeside and hill towns, rather than large cities. This allows you to enjoy the gentle pace and everyday elegance of provincial Italian life, free from noise and the tourist crush. The itinerary is gently paced; busy days are interspersed with quieter ones. Some highlights

Tour Leader Dr Nicholas Gordon has a University Medal and PhD in Italian and English history from the University of Sydney. He has taught European history at universities in Sydney and has led several tours to Italy for Academy Travel. His technical expertise and aesthetic sense as a painter complement his deep knowledge of the art and history of Italy.

Lakes and villas of northern Italy Detailed Itinerary All breakfasts included. Included lunches and dinners are indicated by the letters (L) and (D). Thursday 21 April Orientation

Above: Varenna, a fishing village on Lake Como Below: the entrance to Villa Balbianello from Lake Como, and the gardens of the Villa Carlotta

A group transfer to Bellagio, spectacularly sited on Lake Como, is available for those arriving in Milan’s Malpensa airport on early morning flights. Those travelling independently should make their own way to the hotel. On arrival there is the chance to freshen up (hotel rooms may not available until early afternoon). This afternoon we tour Lake Como on a private boat, stopping at the pretty fishing village of Varenna for afternoon tea or an aperitif. There is a light, early dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight Bellagio (D) Friday 22 April Lake Cruise

Today we tour Lake Como by private launch. Our first stop is the 18th century Villa Balbianello, occupying an extremely beautiful site on a promontory overlooking the lake. We tour the interior, decorated in the 20th century by Italian entrepreneur and explorer Guido Monzino. We continue along the lake, passing exquisite properties owned by some of the most prominent Italian families, until we reach the 16th century Villa D’Este, the best known villa on Lake Como. Here we enjoy a relaxed welcome lunch in a restaurant overlooking the gardens and the lake. Overnight Bellagio (B, L) Saturday 23 April Bergamo

Today we travel 90 minutes south to Bergamo, where we spend the day. The fine medieval town of Bergamo Alto sits on a hill overlooking the Lombardy plain. We will explore the main square, the fine church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the selection of Renaissance art from the Accademia Carrara collection which is on display in the old town. Overnight Bellagio (B) Sunday 24 April Neo-classical villas

This morning we visit the elegant 19th century Villa Melzi, close to our hotel. The villa was built in the neo-classical style for Napoleon’s VicePresident in Italy, Francesco Melzi D’Eril. The extensive gardens are exquisite, and the Japanese garden should be rich with spring colours for our visit. This afternoon we visit the Villa Carlotta, across the lake from Bellagio. This villa contains neo-classical sculptures by Antonio Canova and others, and is renowned for its rhododendrons, which should be in full flower during our visit. Overnight Bellagio (B) Monday 25 April Into Emilia-romagna

We leave Lake Como today and travel to Cremona, stopping at Castel

d’Arquato, a beautiful medieval fortified hill town with a fine Romanesque church and fortress overlooking the valley, after which we enjoy the wonderful regional cuisine in a top local restaurant. In the afternoon, we continue on to Cremona, a pretty medieval city famous for violins. Overnight Cremona (B, L) Tuesday 26 April Modern Villas in Emilia Romagna

Italy’s love affair with the villa has not flagged. This morning we visit Magnani Rocca Estate, with its private art gallery, restaurant and extensive botanical gardens. After lunch at the villa, we visit the Labyrinth of Franco Maria Ricci, one of Italy’s leading publishers, in the centre of which is a gallery housing his invaluable collection of art, printed material and incunabula. We return to Cremona via Fontanellato, whose medieval fortress – one of the few remaining in Italy with its moat intact - was renovated by its 16th century occupants, who employed a young Parmagianino. Overnight Cremona (B, L) Wednesday 27 April Palladio and Vicenza

We depart Cremona today and make our way to Asolo via Vicenza. The town was the home of Andrea Palladio (1508-80), the great Renaissance architect whose Four Books of Architecture are among the most influential works ever written in the field. Our tour begins with Palladio’s Teatro Olimpico and continues by looking at the palaces and public buildings he designed. In the afternoon we visit the best known of his ‘suburban villas’ – the Villa Capra (also known as La Rotonda) before heading to Asolo, our base for the next three nights. Dinner is in our hotel, which happens to boast one of Asolo’s best restaurants. Overnight Asolo (B, D)

Above: the stark Romanesque beauty of the Collegiata church in Castell’Arquato

Thursday 28 April Villa Barbaro and the ValdoBBiadene

This morning we visit Palladio’s masterpiece, the Villa Barbaro, commissioned by two senior officials in the government of Venice and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The extensive fresco decorations are the work of Paolo Veronese. After lunch on the estate, which continues to produce its own wine, we travel to the nearby Valdobbiadene, a string of pretty valleys along the Piave River most famous for producing prosecco. After sampling prosecco at the source we return to Asolo via the village of Possagno, hometown of the 19th century sculptor Antonio Canova, whose works we saw in Bellagio. We visit his monumental tomb, modelled on the ancient Roman Pantheon. Overnight Asolo (B, L) Friday 29 April Asolo

Asolo is one of the most beautiful hill towns in Italy, and the morning and early afternoon are free to relax in the charming town. There are numerous walks through the countryside or up to the medieval fortress above the city, as well as an interesting local museum, cafes and small shops, and a cathedral. This afternoon we take a short excursion to Palladio’s impressive Villa Emo, the most perfectly conceived of Palladio’s villas. Overnight Asolo (B)

Palladio’s Villa Rotonda, in Vicenza (above) and Villa Barbaro in Maser (below)

Lakes and villas of northern Italy Saturday 30 April Verona

This morning we travel to nearby Verona, stopping to visit Bassano del Grappa, with its spectacular view of the Brenta river and bridge designed by Palladio. Verona was an important city in Roman times as well as an important medieval city, ruled by the Della Scala family. This afternoon we take a walking tour of the old city, learning about its history, art and architecture. We visit the Piazza delle Erbe, Della Scala family tombs, and the church of Sant’Anastasia. This evening we dine in a local restaurant. Overnight Verona (B, D) Sunday 1 May Lake Garda

Above: the beautiful city of Verona

This morning we travel to Gardone, on the western shores of Lake Garda. Here we explore the villa of the 20th-century war hero, poet and eccentric Gabriele D’Annunzio. The interior is extraordinary: dark, intense, eclectic and certainly unique. It is complemented by peaceful gardens and terraces extending down to the lake shore. In the afternoon we travel to the eastern shores of Lake Garda, where we have free time for lunch in a medieval town before taking a cable car 1,700 metres up Monte Baldo. After we return to Verona, the evening is at leisure. Overnight Verona (B) Monday 2 May Villa Arvedi and the Giusti Gardens

We begin the day with a visit to the Villa Arvedi, a few kilometres outside Verona, which remains the residence of the Count Arvedi. The villa boasts frescoes by French artist Ludovico Dorigny and a fine parterre garden ‘all’italiana’. Returning to Verona, we visit the Giusti Gardens. Secluded beautifully from the city centre, the Giusti gardens display the elegant formality of the Italian garden. The afternoon is at leisure. Overnight Verona (B) Tuesday 3 May Franciacorta, Lake Iseo and Lake Maggiore Above: The Giusti Gardens in Verona Below: View over Lake Garda

This morning we travel Lake Iseo, a less frequented lake which remains popular in Italy for its tranquillity, scenery and hiking. We tour the lake by boat, stopping at Monte Isola – the island mountain rising spectacularly from the water. On the border of Lake Isea is Franciacorta, a small, hilly district that produces Italy’s premier sparkling wine. After enjoying the produce and wine of this region at a local restaurant, we continue on to Stresa on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Overnight Stresa (B, L) Wednesday 4 May Isola Bella

The Borromean islands, lying just off the shores of Stresa on Lake Maggiore, are named after the noble Milanese Borromeo family, who have owned them since the 13th century. This morning we take a private boat to Isola Bella, an entire island given over to their Baroque palace and theatrical gardens. We return to Stresa and the afternoon is at leisure. Overnight Stresa (B)

Thursday 5 May Isola Madre and Villa Taranto

This morning we take a private boat across Lake Maggiore to visit Isola Madre. In contrast to the Baroque display of the Isola Bella, this Borromean Island was landscaped in the English style in the early 20th century by English designer Henry Cocker. After travelling by boat to the north-eastern shore of the lake for lunch, we visit the exceptional gardens of Villa Taranto, also designed by Henry Cocker, with their extraordinary collection of exotic plants. Returning to Stresa, the evening is at leisure. Overnight Stresa (B, L) Friday 6 May Lake Orta

This morning we travel to the nearby lake of Orta. This lake is yet to be discovered by mass tourism and we visit peaceful Orta San Giulio, a small town on the shore. A private boat takes us to nearby Isola San Giulio, the site of an ancient church, which is still a monastic retreat. After time for lunch, we return to Stresa where the afternoon is at leisure before we meet for our farewell dinner. Overnight Stresa (B, D) Saturday 7 May Departure

An early morning group transfer to Milan’s Malpensa airport is available for those joining midday flights.

Carefully planned itineraries All itineraries feature a carefully thought out balance of walking tours, gallery and museum visits, scenic excursions, dining and performances.

Like-minded groups Share your journey with fellow travellers who are in tune with your way of seeing the world. A maximum of 20 participants – not too small and not too large – creates a convivial atmosphere.

Long stays Perhaps the most appealing feature of our program. No whistlestop tours, no 7.00am departures, day after day. In most destinations we enjoy three or four nights to really get to know the place.

Special experiences A private viewing of the Sistine Chapel or the Museum of Modern Art in New York? Tickets to a sold-out performance of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra? Many of our tours feature top-flight events not usually offered on group tours.

Expert tour leaders Our tour leaders combine academic expertise with a genuine passion for the places you visit. Under their expert guidance you see rather than just look, hear rather than just listen and understand rather than just observe. Your travel experience is transformed.

In-depth information With extensive printed tour materials, including detailed tour notes, destination guides, and daily programs, you’ll build up a coherent understanding of the country you’re visiting, not just a fragmented set of facts. These materials are also available in electronic format.
