Our excursion today sets the scene for Spain and its musical heritage. We head out of Madrid, travelling first to the monastery-palace of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. This monumental complex was built by Phillip II, a key figure in Spanish history who is also a protagonist in Verdi’s Don Carlos. Containing the tombs of no fewer than 26 Spanish monarchs, the building is adorned with artworks by Titian, Tintoretto, El Greco and Velázquez. After a guided visit, we continue on to Segovia, a city whose history spans the Roman period, the Moorish occupation and the Catholic monarchy. We enjoy a welcome lunch beneath the arches of the great aqueduct before returning to Madrid. This evening we attend a recital of 18thcentury vocal works sung by countertenor Andreas Scholl. After our first pre-performance talk in the hotel, we have a guided visit of the historic centre of Madrid, a mix of monumental buildings and fine parks and gardens. This evening we have a concert performance of Verdi’s Luisa Miller, a tragic tale based on a play by Schiller. Baritone Leo Nucci leads the international cast, with Francesco Meli as Rodolfo. Particularly noteworthy are the sensuously colourful works of Titian, Rubens, Velázquez and Goya. This afternoon it is also possible to visit the nearby Reina Sofia museum, home to Picasso’s Guernica and other masterpieces of the 20th century. This evening’s performance of Parsifal promises to be a musical highlight of the tour, with renowned maestro Semyon Bychkov conducting a co-production of the Zurich and Madrid opera houses. Director Charles Guth and designer Christian Schmidt are sure to present a thought-provoking interpretation of Wagner’s crowning masterpiece. (B) Performance details Venue: Teatro Real Program: Wagner, Parsifal Performers: Christian Elsner (Parsifal), Anja Kampe (Kundry), Evgeny Nikitin (Klingsor), Detlef Roth (Amfortas), Semyon Bychkov (conductor) Monday April 25 To Barcelona – Performance IV

We share a simple tapas meal before our piano recital at the modernista Palau de la Musica Catalana, one of Europe’s most beautiful concert halls. Tonight’s recital is by Vladimir Ashkenazy, who has returned to the keyboard after many years as chief conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Today we visit two fine museums on Montjuic, a hill overlooking the old city. Beginning at the Fundación Jean Miró, we continue on to the National Museum of Catalonian Art (MNAC) where we have lunch in the museum’s fine restaurant before exploring the gallery’s remarkable collection of Catalonian art from the Romanesque to Art Nouveau. The later afternoon and evening are free. (B, L) Thursday April 28 Tarragona

Today we have a full-day excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Tarragona, situated on the Mediterranean coast about 100 kilometres SW of Barcelona. We enjoy lunch in a local restaurant as well as free time to explore the city centre before returning to Barcelona in the late afternoon. (B, L) Friday April 29 To Florence – Performance VI

This morning we head to Barcelona airport for our midday flight direct to Florence. We transfer to our hotel in central Florence where there will be time to freshen up before tonight’s performance. The organisers of Florence’s annual Maggio Musicale festival have scheduled an orchestral concert for this evening which will probably be led by the festival’s director, Zubin Mehta. After a morning pre-performance talk, a local guide takes us to some of the artistic and architectural gems that have made Florence famous over the centuries. As well as the main city, we cross the river to the ‘Oltrarno’ neighbourhood. Here we visit the Brancacci Chapel which is decorated

with important early Renaissance frescoes by Masaccio and Masolino depicting the acts of the Apostles. This evening an opera has been scheduled by the Maggio Musicale, either at the Teatro Comunale or the lovely 18th-century Teatro della Pergola. Performance details will be available in early 2016. (B) Performance details Venue: Teatro Comunale or Teatro della Pergola, Florence Program: Opera, details to be announced February 2016 Performers: To be announced February 2016 Sunday May 1 The Chianti Hills

Today is a major public holiday throughout Europe, and most museums and galleries in Italy are closed. In the late morning we head to the Chianti region, where the rolling hills, olive groves, vineyards and avenues of cypress pines arrange themselves into classic Tuscan vistas. We stop at villages such as Greve, Castellina and Radda for coffee and a wine tasting, and enjoy a special May-day lunch at a country restaurant before returning to Florence where the evening is at leisure. (B, L) Monday May 2 Art in Florence – Optional Performance

This morning we have reserved a group entry to the Uffizi galleries which famously house the art collection of the city of Florence. Founded in the Renaissance by the Medici family in the offices (Uffizi) from which they administered their Duchy of Tuscany, the galleries boast superb early Florentine and Sienese works by Giotto, Martini and others. Botticelli’s celebrated Birth of Venus and Primavera are here, as well as masterpieces by Leonardo, Titian, Bronzino, Dürer and Holbein. This evening there is a good chance of a chamber music concert or recital at the Maggio Musicale, with details available in early 2016. (B) Performance details Venue: Teatro della Pergola, Florence Program: Chamber concert or recital, details to be announced February 2016 Performers: To be announced February 2016 Tuesday May 3 Puccini’s Italy

We depart Florence this morning and head to Lucca, a small walled city near the Tuscan coast. Founded by the Romans, Lucca was the birthplace of no fewer than four composers – Geminiani, Boccherini, Catalani and Puccini. We have a guided visit of this most attractive town and there is time for lunch in Lucca before we continue on to nearby Torre del Lago, a village on Lake Massaciuccoli near Viareggio. Here we visit the villa where Puccini lived and where many of his operas were written. We continue up the coast to Milan, arriving in the early evening. There is a simple dinner in our hotel. In the afternoon, we visit the Casa di Riposo, a retirement home for musicians founded by Giuseppe Verdi. This evening, at La Scala, we see a new production of a long-neglected verismo opera, Umberto Giordano’s La cena delle beffe. The opera premiered at La Scala in 1924 under Toscanini. This morning we travel to Bellagio, beautifully situated at the junction of the two branches of Lake Como. The town is surrounded by villas and gardens and looks northwards to the Alps. After time to enjoy the views and the town, a private boat takes us down the lake, past the neo-classical Villa Melzi and the Villa Balbianello to the Renaissance-era Villa d’Este. This has been one of Europe’s grand hotels for more than a century now, and we enjoy an elegant lunch al fresco on the lakefront before returning to Milan. (B, L) Friday May 6 Leonardo’s Last Supper – Performance IX

After a morning talk on our final performance, we visit the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie to view Leonardo’s Last Supper, a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance painted for the refectory of the church in 1495-8. Tonight, we return to La Scala for a new production of Puccini’s La fanciulla del West. Ever the innovator, Puccini set his opera in the goldfields of California. The new production is directed by Graham Vick, with Riccardo Chailly conducting. The cast is led by Dutch soprano EvaMaria Westbroek as Minnie, with Marcelo Alvárez singing the outlaw Dick Johnson. After the performance there are drinks and supper at our hotel.
