Professional development tour for history teachers Overview Academy Travel is delighted to present an outstanding professional development opportunity for current History teachers and student teachers. This 11-day program is designed to cover key syllabus areas from both the HSC Modern History syllabus and the VCE History syllabus.

Delve into Revolutionary Paris with visits to Versailles and the Tennis Court Museum, plus relevant sites around the city. Journey to the Somme Valley to traverse battlefields and see poignant memorials to the fallen soldiers of World War I. Investigate the rise and fall of the Third Reich and the resulting Cold War in Berlin, with visits to extensive museums and tours with local experts. Travel to Russia to see the sites associated with the 1917 Revolution, the 1944 Siege of Leningrad and the Cold War with academic expert Dr Matthew Del Santo. This carefully planned program will be escorted by an experienced tour manager and include a series of guided tours, on site visits with experts and workshops, alongside time for sightseeing, shopping and soaking up the local cultures. Matthew was born in Sydney and now resides in Copenhagen. He has a Bachelor of Arts with FirstClass Honours from the University of Sydney and a PhD Philosophy in History from Cambridge University. He is an historian of contemporary postSoviet Russia and a Danish Research Council post-doctoral fellow at the University of Copenhagen. His present project investigates narratives of Russia's past in contemporary Russian political discourse. He has worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is a former Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. He is also a regular contributor to the ABC on matters of international relations, policies and politics. Matthew speaks a number of European languages, including Russian.

Your tour itinerary begins in Paris at 4pm on Monday, 4th July. If you are arranging your own individual flights, you will need to ensure your flight arrives in Paris by at least 1pm on that day. The tour program ends at 12pm on Thursday, 14th July. July is the peak period for travel to Europe, therefore we suggest you book flights at the same time as you are confirmed to be on this tour. We can also provide a quote for airport transfers in Paris and Moscow on request. Travel insurance Academy Travel requires that all participants have comprehensive travel insurance. We can arrange a policy with Suresave for $145.00 per person (for persons aged up to 49 years). We welcome partners of teachers to accompany them on tour, and we do understand that not all activities may be of interest to non-teachers. Alternative activities for accompanying partners can be suggested by the tour manager (please note there are no refunds/discounts for unused portions of the tour). Non-teachers with a strong interest in the subject matter are also welcome. Passports and visas Your passport must be valid until January 14th, 2017 or will need to be renewed prior travel. Australian passport holders do not require a visa to travel to Europe; however, all visitors are required to obtain a visa to enter Russia. The processing fee for a single entry Tourist Visa for Australian citizens is $120.00. More information on visa applications will be provided in your welcome pack.

Tour itinerary Please note this itinerary is subject to change dependent on local conditions, weather, opening hours, availability of experts, availability of access, etc. Included meals are indicated: breakfast (B), lunch (L), dinner (D). Day 1: Monday, 4th July – Arrive Paris

Arrive Paris and make your own way to the hotel. Meet your tour manager and group in the hotel lobby at 4pm for an introduction to the city. Visit gothic Notre Dame Cathedral and the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank before enjoying a one hour sightseeing tour along the River Seine. Dinner will be included at a local restaurant. (D) Day 2: Tuesday, 5th July – Revolutionary Paris Trace the ground of the French Revolution, beginning with a guided tour of the Chateau of Versailles: King Louis XVI’s lavish palace that became a symbol of the excess of the French monarchy. Spend time in the small yet fascinating Tennis Court Museum, site of the famous oath.

Returning to the city centre, enjoy a self-guided visit of the Military Museum and Napoleon’s Tomb at Les Invalides. A local expert guide will then lead a walk past sites that played important roles in the 1789 Revolution, such as Place de la Concorde, the Conciergerie and Place de la Bastille. (B)

Day 3: Wednesday, 6th July – Somme Valley A full day on the World War I battlefields of the Western Front with a local expert guide. Walk the ground at Pozieres, the site of the Australian Imperial Forces first and bloodiest battle in the Somme. See the original trenches and mine craters at the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial. Visit the imposing British Monument at Thiepval before an included lunch at the Old Blighty Tea Rooms. In the afternoon, there will be stops at the Australian Corps Memorial at Le Hamel, site of General Monash’s legendary victory, and the Australian National Monument at VillersBrettoneux. En route back to Paris, we visit the Armistice Museum at Compiègne. (B, L)


Tour itinerary Day 4: Thursday, 7th July – To Berlin Private coach transfer to the airport for the flight to Berlin. After checking in at the hotel, we will visit the German Historical Museum. A museum guide will provide an introductory talk on “1918-1945 From the Weimar Republic to the Nazi Regime” before time to explore at your own pace. The Museum has an excellent collection of permanent exhibits tracing the country’s history from the Middle Ages, through the Wars until unification. (B) Day 5: Friday, 8th July – Third Reich and Cold War

Full day coach and walking tour of significant sites related to the recent history of the city. We will begin at the Reichstag and visit inside the building’s dome (subject to availability). Our local guide will take us to the Brandenburg Gate and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. A little further afield, we visit the expansive Soviet Memorial at Treptower Park and the Eastside Gallery, the largest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall now converted into an open air art exhibit. We will also visit Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall Memorial. (B) Day 6: Saturday, 9th July – Sachsenhausen and afternoon at leisure Today we head outside of the city to visit Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial with a local guide. We return to the city centre by lunchtime, and the remainder of the afternoon is free to explore the city at leisure. The city of Berlin is full of fascinating museums and sites for you to discover. We will meet again in the evening for dinner and a local cabaret performance, a Berlin tradition. (B, D) Day 7: Sunday, 10th July – To St Petersburg Private coach transfer to the airport and fly to St Petersburg. After checking in to the hotel, our local Russian guide will provide an orientation walk of the area before an included dinner at the hotel. The group will be provided with academic content through Russia by Dr Matthew Dal Santo. Tonight, Matthew will present a talk on “Russia’s Revolution” before leading an orientation stroll along the canals to the Winter Palace to enjoy the city’s “White Nights”. (B, D)

Tour itinerary Day 8: Monday, 11th July – The Russian Revolution Today we will tour the sites relevant to the 1917 Revolution. This will include a visit to Lenin’s secret flat where he hid for 3 days in 1917 and the Church of Our Savior of the Spilled Blood. You will also have time to explore the State Museum of Political History. Important sites such as the Tauride Palace and Smolny Institute will be viewed, plus the Alexandrovksy Palace at Tsarkoe Selo where Nicholas II lived and was detained with his family. Day 9: Tuesday, 12th July – 1944 Siege of Leningrad and to Moscow The focus shifts to World War II history and in particular the 1944 siege of the city by the Germans. We will begin with a talk on “Russia’s Second World War”, followed by a visit to the small yet interesting Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad. We will explore sites around the city, including significant memorials and cemeteries. We will take an afternoon fast train to Moscow, arriving at the hotel in time for dinner. (B, D) Day 10: Wednesday, 13th July – Cold War Moscow This morning Matthew will present a talk on “Russia’s Cold War”, before embarking on a full day touring Moscow with a local guide and private coach, visiting sites from the Soviet era. We will see the Kremlin, Red Square and the ex-KGB headquarters. Travel 65 metres underground to visit The Cold War Museum located in Bunker-42; complete with KGB rooms, raid sirens and series of tunnels. Onto the city’s highest point, Poklonnaya Hill, home to memorials, WWII tanks and the Great Patriotic War Museum.

After a farewell dinner with the group, we will attend a local ballet performance. (B, D) Day 11: Thursday, 14th July – Depart Moscow In the morning, our local guide will take us on a tour of the Moscow Metro stations containing marble decorations, stained glass, chandeliers and mosaics that stand as a testament to Stalinism. We will end with a stroll through the sculpture garden outside the New Tretyakoz Gallery. The tour officially ends at 12pm. (B)


Hotel information All the hotels selected by Academy Travel offer good facilities, secure locations and free wi-fi (however some may only offer access in the public areas of the building). All rooms are twinshare with private bathrooms (single supplement available). Paris: Ibis Bastille (3 nights) Located in the exciting Marais district in the centre of Paris, this three-star hotel is well located and comfortable. Part of the Accor group of hotels, the Ibis Bastille is used on a regular basis by our groups. The rooms are small but modern and clean with phone and television. There is a restaurant that services a daily buffet breakfast and lobby bar. The hotel is 500 metres from Bastille Metro station, which connects to all major lines across the city. The Marais district is famous for its diverse range of restaurants, cafes and bars.

Berlin: City Hotel am Gendarmenmarkt (3 nights) A three-star hotel located right in the heart of the Mitte district of Berlin. This property has all the essentials for a comfortable stay plus soundproofed rooms allowing for a peaceful stay whilst enjoying the city’s most central location. Gendarmenmarkt Square, Checkpoint Charlie, FriedrichstraĂ&#x;e shopping street and Stadtmitte underground stop are all in walking distance. The hotel restaurant serves buffet breakfast, dinner and room service daily. St Petersburg: Holiday Inn Moskovsky Vorota (2 nights) This hotel is located just minutes from Moskovskiye Vorota Metro Station and 4 metro stops from St Petersburg city centre. Air-conditioned rooms are large, modern, and include flat-screen TVs, refrigerators and comfortable seating areas. The hotel has 2 bars, 3 restaurants and a night club plus free wi-fi throughout. Moscow: Holiday Inn Moscow Lesnaya (2 nights) Surrounded by the restaurants of Lesnaya Street, this modern, 4 star hotel in central Moscow offers soundproofed rooms with flat-screen TV, international cuisine, and a gym. Free WiFi is available in all areas. The hotel has a restaurant serving breakfast and dinner daily and a lobby bar. The Holiday Inn Lesnaya is a 5-minute walk from Belorusskaya Metro Station, just four stops from Red Square. Please note: Hotels may be subject to change (to another hotel of equivalent standard). A moderate level of physical fitness will be required in order to participate in the tour and enjoy everything that the itinerary has to offer. Specifically you should be able to do the following: • • • • • •

Keep up with the group at all times Walk unassisted for up to three to four hours with only short breaks Walk up and down slopes Negotiate steps and slopes on archaeological sites, which are often uneven and unstable Get on and off coaches/public transport unassisted Move around airports with luggage unassisted
