IT Network Operations/Communications Specialist This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. This position reports to the Supervisor, IT Regional Field Operations and is located in Erie, PA. Under general supervision, this position administrates, oversees and directs the installation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting and repair of wide-area facilities (digital and analog microwave radio, multiplex equipment, fiber, etc.), remote terminal units, carrier current equipment, two-way radio (base stations, repeaters, mobiles and central electronics), leased circuit facilities, PBX-related equipment and miscellaneous electronic equipment. Responsibilities include:       

Working within the confines of FirstEnergy’s electrical substation control house and substation ground grid. Administrating, coordinating and directing the installation, testing and troubleshooting of premise wiring used for voice, data and video applications. Directing and participating in research and development of communications systems, as needed. Scheduling and coordinating work, assigning work to individuals in a work group and managing the group's assignments and maintenance tasks. Assuming supervisor's responsibilities when the supervisor is unavailable. Providing technical support for communications and computer equipment by receiving, resolving, documenting and following up on trouble calls and requests for assistance. Carrying a pager and being available for call-out (on-call) duty, which includes extra hours and participation in on-call procedures.

Qualifications include:           

High school diploma or GED required. Minimum three to five years experience as Network Specialist or military communications/electronics experience is preferred. Education associated with communications/electronics technical skills (Associate Degree, Diploma or Certification) is preferred. FCC General Radiotelephone Operator license or other industry recognized certification is desirable. Must be able to logically plan the group's work and adjust to unexpected changes in the work plan. Must have a thorough knowledge of the utility companies’ power system (Substations/Remote Terminal Units) and communications networks. Experience with personal computer hardware, operating systems and application software (MS office productivity tools) as it relates to FirstEnergy’s IT environment. Must be able to build relationships and foster teamwork. Demonstrate aptitude for leadership, initiative, and the ability to supervise subordinates and create a favorable employer/employee relationship. Must have the ability to solve complex and complicated problems, to configure new electronic circuits or to alter existing circuits to meet requirements. Able to travel, including overnight trips, as required.
