Job Description: The SOUTHCOM analyst will support the Marine Corps Center for Advanced Operational Culture Learning (CAOCL). Show expertise in specific countries and regional areas. Possess cultural knowledge including but not limited to: understanding of the population and cultures of specific areas. Able to identify and incorporate operationally relevant knowledge into training and education programs for Marine at all levels of maturity, grade, and responsibility. Possess a research and writing capability with sufficient capacity to provide analytical rigor necessary to generate operationally relevant cultural products. Roles and Responsibilities: Research, analyze, develop and revise country and regions specific culture publications and content for curricula as subject matter experts in partnership with curriculum developers. Provide culture briefs, lead guided discussions, participate in panels, and serve as guest lecturers. Network and collaborate with other subject matter experts in support of tasks. Produce all-source products and/or operational culture intelligence products for assigned regions of South America, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Research and develop regional briefs, country briefs, country guides and other publications as required. Focus on operationally relevant behavior, relationships and perceptions of indigenous security forces against or with whom Marines operate; civilian populations among whom Marines operate; indigenous communities or groups whom Marines wish to influence; international partners in coalition operations. Maintain contact with military attaches to collect information regarding their military culture. Provide operationally relevant regional culture and language knowledge. Travel as needed to train Defense Language Institute instructors. Provide individual and group pre-deployment briefs, global and regional studies programs, training on assigned regions in support of training sessions. Provide material and resources in support of the client vision to develop program for career-long learning in language and culture with other language learning resource centers.
Skills: Possess In-depth knowledge of USMC operations in Mexico, Central America, Caribbean Basin, and South American countries. Familiar with the traditions, history, economic challenges, social norms and national customs, in particular the following countries: Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile and the Guianas, Panama, Mexico, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti, Dominican Republic. In-depth understanding of regional dynamics and cultural mechanisms across Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean Basin and South America. Must possess working knowledge of Microsoft office. Ability to build a professional network and interact with the region’s communities in Washington D.C. area. Ability to develop training curriculum for military personnel. Ability to write well in English.

Ability to synthesize cultural data and translate into briefs, written documents and products relevant to Marines’ operations. Current U.S. Citizen or a permanent U. S. Resident.
Education and Experience: Master’s Degree in regional/security studies within the regions of Mexico, Central, and South America and the Caribbean. Extensive operational knowledge of the area (i.e. Marine deployed to Latin America as part of a MCTAG team, multiple FAO assignments, SC/HA/DR missions in the SOUTHCOM/NORTHCOM AOs. Experience living or frequently visiting the region. Experience in instructional delivery or public speaking is required. Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese; Fluency in French a plus. First hand military experience and knowledge in regional studies may be considered in lieu of formal education.
