New York State Campus Compact & AmeriCorps are seeking a VISTA Veterans Services Coordinator who will develop and coordinate activities, events & materials in support of veterans in the Jefferson Community College service area. AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is one of many national service programs administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). VISTA members devote a year of their lives to challenge poverty’s root causes. They achieve this by mobilizing volunteers and local resources and by increasing the capacity of individuals in low-income neighborhoods to rely on themselves to make positive changes. Although nationwide most VISTAs serve in human service agencies, Campus Compact has pioneered the use of this resource to enhance civic engagement in higher education.
Position Description Jefferson Community College, as part of a grant from the New York Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA Program, is seeking a VISTA Veterans Services Coordinator who will develop and coordinate activities, events and materials in support of veterans in our service area. The VISTA Veterans Services Coordinator will identify community agencies that serve veterans and work to build strong community relationships. Through community collaborations, the VISTA Veterans Services Coordinator will develop a support network to identify and continually assess the unmet needs of veterans in our service area and find sustainable solutions to support and resolve their unmet needs. This project will work to alleviate poverty and encourage capacitybuilding and community empowerment among veterans and veteran-serving agencies. The VISTA employee will be positioned at Jefferson Community College and will identify and collaborate with community organizations and veterans to address unmet needs and services, develop/market a resource guide for veterans, provide resources and support to enable veterans to reach their educational and career goals, and develop College resources to provide a veteran-friendly educational environment for veteran students. Qualifications A Bachelor’s Degree, commitment to serving full-time for 1 year without outside commitments, strong written and verbal communications skills, demonstrated leadership, public speaking and event planning experience and/or abilities, knowledge of and interest in working with students and diverse groups and a commitment to and experience in community service are required. A valid driver’s license is also required, as is proficiency in Microsoft Office including Outlook. A military veteran is highly desired. Knowledge of social media outlets is preferred. To Apply 1.
