ABOUT US The Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) degree is a studio-oriented program, preparing students for a professional career related to the design of the built environment. The four-year degree takes on a hands-on approach providing a wide range of technical and artistic skills. Throughout the fourth year of the BID program, students are guided by faculty to apply their accumulated research to a topic and design sector of their choosing. Students have developed design concepts and detailed drawing packages surrounding their research, producing their senior project. We want to thank you for taking an interest in the senior projects and hope that you enjoy celebrating each of the 2021 BID graduates' work showcased throughout this catalogue.

EMPHASIZING SUSTAINABILITY IN PENITENTIARY DESIGN

Project Type: Institutional Supervisor: Alfred H. Baucom Keywords: sustainability, penitentiary, rehabilitation, reintegration, recidivism, environmental psychology

There is currently a disconnect between penitentiary infrastructure and its corresponding social structures, and much of the disparity stems from a lack environmental psychology considerations within the design strategies. Even the word used to describe the facility on its own can produce a negative connotation surrounding the expectations of the institution. For this reason, I consciously refer to the focus of my project as “penitentiary design” as opposed to “prison design” as penitentiary implies a place for penitence and reflection, while the word prison

merely suggests a space for detainment or incapacitation. Ultimately, there are four main goals of the justice system: deterrence, retribution, incapacitation, and rehabilitation; however, the idea of rehabilitating those who deviate from societal norms seems to have become a fantasy of a Utopian society rather than a legitimate correctional strategy. Therefore, I have chosen to design a healthy place in which those incarcerated are met with an attitude of understanding, empathy, and encouragement – a space that emanates the freedom to be reformed.

Brittany Cox My love for designing spaces stems from my interest in healthy living; one of the most important aspects of a healthy lifestyle is ensuring the atmosphere in which the living takes place also promotes wellbeing. With this realization, I strive to create a sense of peace within cohesive interior design solutions to encourage a harmonious relationship between the users, the built environment, and the natural environment. I intend to provide clients with spaces wherein people and nature can coexist.

THE UNSEEN SIGNS OF WAYFINDING ON A CRUISE SHIP Moving around a large cruise ship brings wonder to those who are traveling when it comes to wayfinding, safety, crowding, and reaching services. With the development of technology and resources, cruise ships are becoming unique in shape making the navigation process reaching a certain amenity difficult and frustrating. The major aspect that

Allison Freiha From a very young age, my parents would always come up with new renovation projects around the house; I was intrigued by their designs and convinced them to employ me as their little helper. Although I almost drifted away, it is interesting how sometimes life determines our passions and drives us to unexpected paths so far from our initial destinations. Through interior design, I was able to find an inner infatuation with something that brings out my inner skills and talents. Taking into consideration my cultural background, I aspire to execute designs that reflect various traditions and experiences. Website https:// allisonfreiha. wixsite.com/

RECREATIONAL DESIGN FOCUSING ON MODERN MENTAL HEALTH Nowadays, people are living under huge pressure because they often busy between work and home. People are likely to suffer from mental illness or affect their physical health if continuing the terrible conditions. Research tells us to chat with family and friends can improve a depressed mood.

Project Type: Commercial Supervisor: Tamara Phillip Keywords: communication, friend, families, nature People should reserve some time for themselves to rest and relax, forget their worries, and fully enjoy the surrounding natural environment. Behere which is a board game cafe located in Ottawa, Ontario is established for this purpose.

Yaoyu Jin During four years of studying at BID, my focus has always been to improve users’ experiences in interior spaces to allow users to feel satisfied and healthy. As well, I enjoy making spaces that focus on functionality and sustainability as I believe those are important elements to successful design projects. I am excited to bring the knowledge I have learned these past four years to future designs and to share my passion for design with others. Finally, I want to say that I am very grateful to my parents for their unconditional support and encouragement on my path to complete my

Project Type: Residential Supervisor: Pallavi Swaranjali Keywords: Low-cost, Newcomer housing, Families, Shelters design of newcomer housing is a fundamental component to the success of these spaces. With newcomers’ arrival each day, it is vital to continue understanding how to design better spaces to promote healthy, functional, sustainable, and flexible living spaces to address their needs.

As an Interior Designer to-be, I am thrilled to take the next leap in my professional career. Within the exciting Interior Design field, I seek to understand it into the world we live in. QUEENSWAY CARLETON NURSING HOME FOR NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS

Project Type: Healthcare Supervisor: Tamara Phillips Keywords: neurological disorders, biophilia, long-term care

Neurological disorders are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the world. The Queensway Carleton Nursing Home for Neurological Disorders is a long-term healthcare facility designed for the holistic well-being of all users. The facility uses biophilic design solutions to enhance the mental, physical, and emotional stimulation of the users.

The nursing home consists of two stories which both have access to indoor and outdoor therapeutic gardens. The ground floor is designed for the residents and visitors to socialize, and exercise their memory, and their bodies. The second floor is created for healthcare staff only to have their own space to relax during stressful times.

Pia Marin Barra One of my earliest memories was of me colouring on one of the planes, coming to Canada from Chile at 5 years old. At 8 years old, I started installing drywall and painting walls with my dad across Ottawa. Now, at 21 years old, I will receive my Bachelor of Interior Design! I have grown a passion for hospitality and healthcare design over the years. Many people do not realize how much interior design can impact their daily lives, and I strive to design positive spaces for all my clients down the line. I am forever grateful for my family, friends, and professors that have pushed me in the past 4 years!

FACILITATING AGING IN PLACE THROUGH THE DESIGN OF PREFABRICATED, ADAPTABLE HOUSING

Project Type: Residential Supervisor: Pallavi Swaranjali Keywords: aging in place, adaptable, prefabricated Since our lives are not static, interior designers need to find ways to create houses that can accommodate both predictable and unpredictable lifestyle changes. As such, there is a need for houses that can provide residents with a stable home base in which they can put down roots, grow, flourish, and make lasting memories. The Chronolodge is a prefabricated, adaptable house designed to support occupants throughout their life with particular emphasis on aging in place.

Sarah McKay Interior design has always been a passion of mine. In high school, I submitted a design of a floating house to the Sears Design Exchange national competition. The house was intended for remote northern communities at risk of flooding. I was thrilled to receive an Honourable Mention in the Architecture & Design category, and I felt that this accomplishment further reinforced my decision to pursue a bachelor’s degree in interior design. The aspect of interior design that I find the most rewarding is the profession’s ability to improve individuals’ quality of life.

CO-WORKING SPACE FOR WOMEN AND NON-BINARY PEOPLE Gender discrimination and stereotyping are leading factors for female inequality in a male-dominated workforce, leading to the lack of confidence and success for women in the workplace. The Rise and Shine Co-Working Hub will serve as a

By addressing the needs of the user through catered amenities, resources, and floor plan arrangements, members of the Rise and Shine Co-Working Hub will be guaranteed to rise, and shine, all while being part of a beautiful and inclusive community of like-minded individuals.

Brooklyn Proulx I'm excited to further develop my current knowledge and skills in interior design through experience in the field.
