Rotary Club Albany Creek RYDA Rotaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Road Safety Youth Driver Awareness Program The aim is to change the way young people think about road safety. In a one day interactive event, students experience high-speed braking, devise travel strategies that will work for them in the real world and get tips from road safety experts on how to protect themselves, their friends and family. Last year, with our partner Road Safety Education, we completed our first RYDA program on the North side of Brisbane at Bracken Ridge TAFE. It was a very successful day with 140 students from Mueller College being our first clients. We are now looking to expand the program to the rest of the District. It is our intention to involve other Rotary Clubs, and interested parties in the program. The reality is that with the number of potential High Schools on the North Side, one club would be stretched if it has to cover all the associated contingencies! It would therefore make more sense to have a pool of volunteers from other clubs available to help. While Rotary has been integral in the launch of the program, we believe that road safety is a community responsibility, and that the community as a whole should be involved. So far this year, we have six schools committed to the program, but we hope that there will be more. This is an outstanding program that is delivered to thousands of students every year, and has a proven track record of success.

A much-anticipated boutique townhouse development emphasising privacy, lifestyle and green space on the historic former Hawkins Garden Centre site at Albany Creek has been launched by Unison Projects. Construction of the 74 townhouse development featuring a resort-style recreation space on a 3.2ha parcel at 623 Albany Creek Road, Albany Creek, has commenced following 12 months of civil works. Unison Projects’ Matt O’Driscoll said the $37 million estate has been named Preston Point following a competition involving Albany Creek State High School students who were invited to suggest a name and explain their inspiration. “There were many entries with lots of brilliant ideas but the successful entry came from students Madalyn Martin, Kirra Young and Stephanie McBean,” Mr O’Driscoll said. “Their inspiration came from the history of the parcel of land. It was originally purchased on 1 December 1865 by John Preston. The girls won $100 each from Unison Projects and were presented with a certificate by Deputy Mayor Mike Charlton.” Mr O’Driscoll said the Preston Point Residences offers a creekside urban retreat and will feature a 16m residents’ swimming pool with wrap around deck, BBQ area, fire pit, bocce court, communal vegetable garden and large lawn area with football posts.

“This will be a truly ‘green’ community on the banks of Albany Creek, with just two thirds of the 3.2ha site being developed to provide for extensive private green open space and retention of stately 100-year-old fig trees,” he said. “This is a rare blend of urban living and green space, just 14km from the Brisbane CBD and convenient to many local amenities and substantial infrastructure.” Mr O’Driscoll said the architect designed townhouses will have broad appeal to a range of potential buyers from people entering the property market to downsizers who want to stay in the popular and well-serviced area. “With 18 varieties of terrace designs and numerous facades to choose from, there’s a stunning new home to suit all tastes,” he said. “The homes have been masterfully designed to cohabit with their natural surrounds. “Terrace layouts include 2, 3 and 4 bedroom designs, all featuring 2.5 bathrooms and two car garage. Some 4-bedroom options also feature a ground floor master bedroom with ensuite.”

BUZZ 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Now we are Five!

It’s been five years since we published the first Albany Creek Buzz, today we have 17 Buzz publications, but Albany Creek will always be the birth place of the Buzz. In the next three years Brisbane Buzz magazines will be seen in every home in Brisbane but the publication that started in Albany Creek is spreading quickly, the Buzz is now delivered to over 160,000 homes every quarter. I moved to Albany Creek in 1984, in those days the Northern Road was still dirt and there was a cow paddock where Dan Murphy’s now sits. I was a fresh faced young Englishman who was soon to fall in love with the lucky country. Fast forward to 2011 and I spoke to Wayne Goddard and Ron Stafford about starting a local publication, both had grown up in Albany Creek and both thought it was a great idea. Having spent 30 years in the corporate world I was looking for a change of scenery and wondered why such a tight community as Albany Creek didn’t have its own magazine.

...the publication that started in Albany Creek is spreading quickly, the Buzz is now delivered to over 160,000 homes every quarter. I then walked the streets of Albany Creek and after a few months we had drummed up enough support to publish our first issue.

BUZZ 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Although a little thinner than today’s issues our first Buzz was full of some great local businesses many of whom are still in the Buzz today. These include Hello World (Formally HWT) Priceline Pharmacy (Formally Amcal) Albany Creek Optometrists, Preventistry, Ron Lawson Lawyers, RV Warehouse, AC Vets, Portabella, Remax Northern Realty, Peter Campbell Realty, Torque Toyota, Platinum Painters and First Class Accounts Albany Creek. Two years ago after strong demand from the trades and services sector we started the Trades and services Buzz and we have now expanded to 16 publications across over 70 suburbs in Brisbane. Now there are plans to continue to grow and cover the whole of Brisbane with up to 40 different local Buzz trades and services magazines. Albany Creek is very dear to my heart I love the strong sense of community which is the backbone of the Buzz, and having spent 32 years as an Albany Creeker I consider myself a local. Thank you to all the fantastic local community organisations, volunteers and supporters who make our suburb such a great place to live, one of the best days of the year is when we take the big buzz dog to the annual Albany Fair, we get to meet so many friendly happy locals and the kids get to cuddle our Saint Bernard. I recently saw a photo of a sign outside a small butchers shop window it read:
