CALF MANAGEMENT Five Simple Rules For Feeding Colostrum 1. Say Good-Bye to Mom. Remove the calf from the dam before it has a chance to be exposed to pathogens from nursing or from the calving environment.

Maximizing the genetic potential of the herd begins with a successful calf-raising program. Accelerated Calf Technology (ACT) provides products designed to assist the newborn calf through the critical first months of life. COLOSTRUM REPLACEMENT First Day Formula® 30240 500 gr.

A colostrum supplement and replacement product for dairy and beef calves that contains dried, natural bovine colostrum safe for newborn calves. First Day Formula® is fortified with essential vitamins and chelated trace minerals. This product’s unique and healthy combination of proteins, vitamins and minerals make it an ideal supplement for poor quality colostrum or as a replacement when fresh colostrum is not available. Should be fed within the first few hours of life.

Calf Tube Feeder 30123

An ideal tool for feeding colostrum or re-hydration products to young calves. The stainless steel tube is specifically designed for young calves and the bulb-end helps facilitate placement into the esophagus. A clamp on the rubber hose can be released allowing the calf to be fed only when you want it to be. All parts, including the one-gallon reservoir, can be disassembled for cleaning ease.

A supplement to be added to milk replacer or whole milk. It should be used during periods of stress to promote calf health and vigor. First Life Formula includes porcine plasma and porcine serum, chelated minerals, essential oils, vitamins and other key nutraceuticals which have been shown to improve calf health and performance especially during high stress situations, such as shipping, weather, or other environmental conditions. Should be fed during the first few weeks of life.

2. Feed A Gallon and Feed It Early. Passive transfer – the measurement of the calf’s absorption of the protective antibodies in colostrum (IgG’s) - is affected by the quality and amount of colostrum fed and the size and age of the calf. For Holstein calves, feed 4 quarts of colostrum within the first hour (Jersey calves and small Holsteins should be fed less). 3. It’s OK to Force the Issue. Few calves will freely drink 4 quarts of colostrum. Use an esophageal feeder if necessary. 4. Not All Milk Is Created Equal. Colostrum is the secretion from the mammary gland for the first 24 hours after calving. Transition milk is the secretion beginning at 24 hours and after 72 hours transition milk becomes milk. Colostrum differs from transition milk and milk in concentration of protein, fat, lactose, vitamins and most importantly, IgG’s. Only colostrum from disease-free dams which is free from blood, mastitis, manure or other contaminates should be fed. A colostrometer can be used to measure colostrum quality. 5. Fresh is Best. High quality, fresh colostrum is best; however, unused colostrum can be refrigerated for up to 48 hours or frozen for up to one year. Store colostrum in 2 quart or smaller bottles or plastic zip-lock bags. Containers should be marked with the date collected and the ID of the dam. Refrigerators should be set for under 40°F. “Frost-free” freezers which go through a freeze-thaw cycle are not ideal for long-term storage. Thaw colostrum in a warm water bath (110° to 120°F). Thawing in a microwave is not recommended.

CALF MANAGEMENT MILK REPLACERS Five Factors Affecting Calf Performance 1. Colostrum: A good colostrum program consists of feeding at least 4 quarts of a high quality, clean colostrum to an average sized Holstein calf within an hour of birth. Colostrum should be the first milk from the udder after a dry period of at least 30 days from a properly vaccinated dry cow that is on a good nutrition program. Colostrum products from Accelerated Genetics can supplement low quality colostrum or be used as a replacement feed if no fresh colostrum is available. 2. Cleanliness: Reducing pathogen load is critical for a successful calf raising program. This is done with good biosecurity such as following “all-in allout” principles with calf housing. Follow proper cleaning and sanitation protocols for all feeding equipment on a consistent basis. Good cleaning is not using just a dish soap on equipment. For best results, use the same system used in a milk house for cleaning the milking equipment. 3. Nutrition: Use a good quality milk replacer and feed it at recommended levels. Start feeding a good quality calf starter by day 3 in small quantities. Keep the starter fresh by replacing daily and offer free choice clean water at all times. Work with your local Accelerated Genetics representative to fine-tune your nutritional products for maximum performance goals. 4. Environment: Keeping calves comfortable will reduce stress and improve performance. Make sure they are properly bedded, kept dry and there are no drafts. In addition, during cold weather, make sure calves have a place to “nest” to stay warm. 5. Reduce Stress: Stress reduces calf performance. Stress occurs during dehorning, vaccinating, tail docking, weaning, moving, grouping and socialization. Plan today to spread out the above activities with your calves and you will minimize stress. Remember that preweaned calves are still babies. They need to be treated this way.

Heifer calves are the future of the milking herd. Evidence is accumulating that indicates growth rate and health during the first 8 weeks of a calf’s life can impact lactation performance as a cow. In order to evaluate the success of a calf program, calf raisers need to know where they stand in terms of calf growth rate and health, and compare those values against industry standards (i.e., benchmarks). Growth: A general goal for calf growth, regardless of breed, should be to double the calf’s birthweight by 60 days of age. For a 90-lb. calf, this means that the calf should gain 1.5 lbs./day in order to reach 180 lbs. by 60 days of age. Several factors influence calf growth, including breed, colostrum status, environmental pathogen load, type of calf housing, liquid feed source and feeding program, calf starter management, and weaning age. All these factors are interrelated, such that inadequacies in any area can influence the outcome of another. A conventional milk replacer program (20-20 or 22-20) can meet the goal of doubling birthweight by 60 days provided the other factors mentioned do not inhibit calf growth. Health: Recent USDA data indicates that 7.8% of the heifer calves born and alive at 48 hours of age die prior to weaning, with the majority of deaths due to: 1) scours, diarrhea, or other digestive problems (56.5%), or 2) respiratory problems (22.5%). Less than 5% mortality from 48 hours of age until weaning is the recommended benchmark, but every calf raiser’s goal should be to keep driving this number lower. Clearly, calf death loss is the least desirable outcome, but high incidence of calfhood diseases can significantly influence long-term productivity and profitability. Less than 25% of calves should be treated for disease prior to weaning. Death loss or treatment rates exceeding these benchmarks call for an investigation (in conjunction with your veterinarian, nutritionist, and/or calf specialist) to determine the source of infection and identify corrective actions.

CALF MANAGEMENT ACT Calf Accelerator Calf Starter is based on expert-reviewed, controlled research, proven repeatedly to improve calf performance, efficiency, and economics of production. Calf Accelerator is high in starch and low in fiber to promote consumption, rapid rumen development, and rate of gain (J. Dairy Sci, 2008). The energy ingredients are only corn and oats, not fibrous by-products. A blend of short chain fatty acids, medium chain fatty acids, and essential fatty acids repeatedly shown to improve calf performance are included in Calf Accelerator. The mode of action of these fatty acids is increased development of the intestinal mucosa and pancreas, antimicrobial properties of the fatty acids, and supply of essential fatty acids that are deficient in the diet. Several controlled trials with these nutrients have been published and summarized with these fatty acid blends known as Neotec4®. In the trials with calves less than 2 months of age, an all-milk protein milk replacer was fed. In both starter and grower trials (Table 1), calves fed Neotec4® had greater average daily gains, feed efficiency, and changes in hip widths with no change in starter intake or body condition scores (BCS). Additionally, a blend of various botanical products, Apex, is included in Calf Accelerator. Apex has been shown to improve calf body weight gain, starter intake, feed efficiency, and hip width change in calves under 2 months old fed a soy-based milk replacer (Table 2). COLD WEATHER CARE The Thermal-Neutral Zone (TNZ) is a temperature range where animals are neither too hot or too cold. The range for calves is from a low of about 50°F to a high of 78°F. (10-25°C) When the temperature drops below 50°F calves will start to use more energy to maintain their body temperature. During these cold weather times, extra energy and/or outerwear is necessary to keep your calf’s growth on track. In cold weather, energy can be a limiting factor to growth, leaving calves susceptible to sickness. Feeding a high quality milk replacer to pre-weaned calves makes economic sense and helps prevent weight loss in cold weather environments. The chart at right estimates daily gain expected at feeding rates and temperatures when feeding Accelerated Genetics milk replacer.

Colostrum collection, quality, and storage • Every effort should be made to provide clean quality colostrum (4 L as soon as possible after birth) to the calf in order to prevent bloat-causing bacteria from establishing in the calf’s digestive tract. Cleanliness of feeding equipment and calf hutches/pens • Pathogens that cause bloat are abundant in the environment, therefore cleaning and disinfecting feeding equipment between feedings and calf pens/hutches between calves is a very important practice. Consistency of milk replacer from feeding to feeding may be a factor (intervals, concentration of powder to water) • Consistency is very important. This refers to maintaining a consistent feeding schedule and consistent mixing protocols (ratio of powder to water). Inadequate milk or milk replacer temperature • Feeding milk or milk replacer at 95ºF or below may induce bloat. Feeding temperature should be closer to 101ºF-102ºF–the body temperature of a healthy calf. • Higher risk in the winter, which may be related to rapid cooling of milk replacer solution, resulting in milk temperature being significantly cooler than intended. More common with higher feeding rates • Be careful when introducing high feeding rates, perhaps use a conservative step-up approach. • High feeding rates have been successfully implemented on several farms. There are ways to lessen the impact of heat stress on cattle. Ways you can minimize the effect include:

• Heat stress depresses feed intake, so it is important to adjust the ration to meet the same requirements.

• Temperature levels that may be comfortable to people can be stressful on high producing cattle. Ideal temperatures for a dairy cow are between 41˚ and 77˚ F.

• At least one water source is needed for every twenty cows at all times. Keeping the water clean and fresh is also important. Cattle will drink more water when a cool clean source of water is available.

A unique electrolyte designed to combat the losses due to dehydration. Can be used for both pre-hydrating (prior to stress) and re-hydrating (post stress) cattle. NUTRITION Trace Minerals: An Expensive Way to Cut Expenses in Dairy Cows During difficult economic times, it is tempting to cut expenses in areas that have dramatic impact on profits in the long run. The role of minerals tends to be underestimated but minerals are required for growth, muscle and nerve function, immune system and reproduction. Here are some key points in the importance of vitamins and minerals in dairy cattle:

NUTRITION Macrominerals are important to cattle diets Having a healthy cow means making sure there are enough minerals in the diet to help the animal meet all of its needs. The bullets below show most important minerals and their role in a healthy dairy cow: Phosphorus (P): Phosphorus is commonly referred to as the “fertility” mineral. Inactive ovaries, delayed sexual maturity and low Chromium (CR) have been attributed to low P intakes. Overfeeding P levels over NRC recommendations (0.37%) do not gain anything in production or reproduction, but could increase environmental damage and increase feeding costs. Calcium (Ca): Cattle need Ca for skeletal growth and milk production. From mid to late pregnancy, a bred cow’s requirement for Ca increases by 22 per cent and after calving by an additional 40 per cent. A deficiency can lead to milk fever around the time of calving particularly in high milk producing breeds. A greater incidence of calving difficulty, retained placenta and prolapsed uterus may also occur. Potassium (K): Potassium functions in pH balance, osmotic pressure and the amount of water retained in the body. High levels of K may inhibit Magnesium (Mg) absorption and cause metabolic problems, especially in grazing systems. Other studies also report lower fertility in cows fed high levels of K or diets in which the K-Na ratio was too wide. Sodium (Na) and Chloride (Cl): Sodium and chloride, are critical in the electrolyte balance. In addition, Na affects the absorption of sugar and proteins from the digestive tract. Salt (NaCl) deficiencies can affect the efficiency of digestion and indirectly the reproduction performance of cows.

In addition, keep people from walking around the bunker, trench or pile during filling and packing, as the equipment operators may not be aware of them and they could get run over. Cover Silage with Care When you cover the bunker, trench or pile, it’s easy to slip on the plastic and tumble off the edge of the bunker – especially during wet weather. To prevent this, face the walls of the bunker. Then, work your way from the edge toward the center of the bunker as you cover the silage. Do your employees or family members refuse to remove silage from an overfilled bunker or silage pile? If so, they have good reason if the silage pile is at an unsafe height. In fact, those employees had good reason to avoid a feedout face that could easily ‘avalanche’ and bury them beneath tons of silage. Following are some ways to avoid a silage avalanche:

Don’t undercut. Undercutting occurs when you dig the unloader bucket into the bottom of the silage instead of shaving it down the face of the bunker – a situation that is quite common when the unloader bucket can’t reach the top of an overfilled bunker or pile. Undercutting creates an overhang of silage that can quickly loosen and tumble to the floor of the bunker.

SAFETY AROUND SILAGE

Take Precautions During Silage Packing

Many producers, employees and family members become complacent with regards toward safety when working with silage in bunkers, trenches and drive-over piles.

Tractor rollover is one of the main concerns during silage packing. To prevent a tractor turnover, or to protect yourself if one occurs, here are some guidelines:

Follow these precautionary measures during packing and feed removal to protect your family, employees and yourself around silage:

Don’t Overfill Silage To prevent accidents, don’t pile forage any higher than what your unloading equipment can safely reach. Typically, an unloader can reach a height of 12 to 16 feet. Thus, if the walls of your bunker stand 16 feet high, don’t try to pack 40 feet of forage into the structure. If you have excess forage to store, consider using plastic silage bags or several small, covered silage piles to store the excess forage.

Always use a packing tractor that has a rollover protective structure (ROPS). Wear your seatbelt at all times. Allow only experienced operators to drive the packing tractor. Set the tractor’s wheels as wide apart as possible, or use dual wheels to increase the tractor’s stability. Use a four-wheel drive or front-wheel assist tractor for better control. Pack the forage at a maximum slope of 3:1 – pack 3 feet of silage horizontally for each foot that you pack vertically – to prevent the slope from becoming too steep. When packing on steep slopes, back the tractor up the slope of the forage instead of driving forward up the slope or parallel with the slope. During packing, slope the forage away from the walls. In a trench silo, pack forage evenly in both directions so that you can drive off the wall onto the ground. When two tractors pack one bunker, establish a driving procedure (Continued on side column)

Use these additional precautions when you feedout silage from a bunker, trench or silage pile: • • •

Use caution when removing the tires and plastic prior to feedout, especially during wet conditions that can cause the plastic to become slippery. Don’t stand on top of a silage overhang. Your weight can cause it to collapse. To prevent a rollover, don’t carry silage in an elevated bucket. Instead, push silage in front of the unloader blade or bucket.

Stay away from the face. The face of a bunker silo should not be a gathering place for tours of your dairy or a place where your nutritionist takes a feed sample. To discourage these situations, fence off the area and post a sign which reads ‘Danger: Do Not Enter! Authorized Personnel Only’ at the entrance of the bunker, trench or silage pile. If you need to take a feed sample, take it from the unloader bucket after the silage is removed from the face of the bunker or pile. Use these precautions to prevent injury or death when working with silage in bunkers, trenches or drive-over silage piles.

The first key to having a successful mastitis control practice is to have good milking procedures and to maintain as clean of a living environment as possible. Keeping a consistent and high level of management in both areas at all times is the only way to ensure that mastitis cases are kept to a minimum in the herd. The second key to a successful program is to constantly monitor the herd’s milk quality status. Monitoring herd bulk tank somatic cell counts on a daily basis and occasional monitoring of individual somatic cell counts (DHI testing) is the minimal amount of monitoring any herd should be doing at any time. The next step is to take a bacterial milk culture of the bulk tank on a routine basis. This will help identify the type of organisms that were present in your herd the day of the test and will help determine what areas of management need improvement. Intensively managed farms use the California Mastitis Test (CMT) or individual cow milk cultures to determine treatment strategies on a case by case basis.

Mastitis is an infection caused by microorganisms that invade the mammary gland and damage the tissue that produce the milk. When this happens the body’s immune system reacts and sends white blood cells, which are a major component of the somatic cell count in the milk, to fight off the infection. Visible signs of mastitis include a swollen udder and abnormal milk, but many cases of mastitis show no visible signs and can only be detected by testing for a high somatic cell count.

The final key to a good mastitis management program is treatment. In the past, most cases of mastitis have been treated with antibiotics, but we now know that antibiotics are ineffective against many different types of infections. For contagious mastitis Strep ag can be cured relatively easy with antibiotics, Staph aureus is much harder to control. Currently, there is no effective treatment for mycoplasma. Most environmental mastitis, while effectively treated with antibiotics, may be prevented by maintaining cow cleanliness and an up-to-date vaccination program. In any case, when a problem is identified it is important to go back to the first key and review the farm prevention program.

The detectors are a pressure sensitive device with a built-in timing mechanism designed to be activated by standing heat behavior.
