CALF MANAGEMENT Five Simple Rules For Feeding Colostrum 1. Say Good-Bye to Mom. Remove the calf from the dam before it has a chance to be exposed to pathogens from nursing or from the calving environment.

Maximizing the genetic potential of the herd begins with a successful calf-raising program. Accelerated Calf Technology (ACT) provides products designed to assist the newborn calf through the critical first months of life. COLOSTRUM REPLACEMENT First Day Formula® 30240 500 gr.

A colostrum supplement and replacement product for dairy and beef calves that contains dried, natural bovine colostrum safe for newborn calves. First Day Formula® is fortified with essential vitamins and chelated trace minerals. This product’s unique and healthy combination of proteins, vitamins and minerals make it an ideal supplement for poor quality colostrum or as a replacement when fresh colostrum is not available. Should be fed within the first few hours of life.

Calf Tube Feeder 30123

An ideal tool for feeding colostrum or re-hydration products to young calves. The stainless steel tube is specifically designed for young calves and the bulb-end helps facilitate placement into the esophagus. A clamp on the rubber hose can be released allowing the calf to be fed only when you want it to be. All parts, including the one-gallon reservoir, can be disassembled for cleaning ease.

Early Calf Care First Life Formula 30273 30274

5 lbs. 25 lbs.

A supplement to be added to milk replacer or whole milk. It should be used during periods of stress to promote calf health and vigor. First Life Formula includes porcine plasma and porcine serum, chelated minerals, essential oils, vitamins and other key nutraceuticals which have been shown to improve calf health and performance especially during high stress situations, such as shipping, weather, or other environmental conditions. Should be fed during the first few weeks of life.

2. Feed A Gallon and Feed It Early. Passive transfer – the measurement of the calf’s absorption of the protective antibodies in colostrum (IgG’s) - is affected by the quality and amount of colostrum fed and the size and age of the calf. For Holstein calves, feed 4 quarts of colostrum within the first hour (Jersey calves and small Holsteins should be fed less). 3. It’s OK to Force the Issue. Few calves will freely drink 4 quarts of colostrum. Use an esophageal feeder if necessary. 4. Not All Milk Is Created Equal. Colostrum is the secretion from the mammary gland for the first 24 hours after calving. Transition milk is the secretion beginning at 24 hours and after 72 hours transition milk becomes milk. Colostrum differs from transition milk and milk in concentration of protein, fat, lactose, vitamins and most importantly, IgG’s. Only colostrum from disease-free dams which is free from blood, mastitis, manure or other contaminates should be fed. A colostrometer can be used to measure colostrum quality. 5. Fresh is Best. High quality, fresh colostrum is best; however, unused colostrum can be refrigerated for up to 48 hours or frozen for up to one year. Store colostrum in 2 quart or smaller bottles or plastic zip-lock bags. Containers should be marked with the date collected and the ID of the dam. Refrigerators should be set for under 40°F. “Frost-free” freezers which go through a freeze-thaw cycle are not ideal for long-term storage. Thaw colostrum in a warm water bath (110° to 120°F). Thawing in a microwave is not recommended.

CALF MANAGEMENT MILK REPLACERS Five Factors Affecting Calf Performance 1. Colostrum: A good colostrum program consists of feeding at least 4 quarts of a high quality, clean colostrum to an average sized Holstein calf within an hour of birth. Colostrum should be the first milk from the udder after a dry period of at least 30 days from a properly vaccinated dry cow that is on a good nutrition program. Colostrum products from Accelerated Genetics can supplement low quality colostrum or be used as a replacement feed if no fresh colostrum is available. 2. Cleanliness: Reducing pathogen load is critical for a successful calf raising program. This is done with good biosecurity such as following “all-in allout” principles with calf housing. Follow proper cleaning and sanitation protocols for all feeding equipment on a consistent basis. Good cleaning is not using just a dish soap on equipment. For best results, use the same system used in a milk house for cleaning the milking equipment. 3. Nutrition: Use a good quality milk replacer and feed it at recommended levels. Start feeding a good quality calf starter by day 3 in small quantities. Keep the starter fresh by replacing daily and offer free choice clean water at all times. Work with your local Accelerated Genetics representative to fine-tune your nutritional products for maximum performance goals. 4. Environment: Keeping calves comfortable will reduce stress and improve performance. Make sure they are properly bedded, kept dry and there are no drafts. In addition, during cold weather, make sure calves have a place to “nest” to stay warm. 5. Reduce Stress: Stress reduces calf performance. Stress occurs during dehorning, vaccinating, tail docking, weaning, moving, grouping and socialization. Plan today to spread out the above activities with your calves and you will minimize stress. Remember that preweaned calves are still babies. They need to be treated this way.

Premium quality calf milk replacers providing high digestibility and performance. ACT – Accelerated Calf Technology is Accelerated Genetics combination of specialized ingredients, state-of-the art manufacturing and professional technical support with one goal in mind – to get the optimum performance from your calves. ACT milk replacers are made with food grade ingredients to ensure a consistently high quality product to support optimal calf growth. Our unique manufacturing technology results in a 100% instantized product so powder goes into solution with minimal mixing and is consistent from the top to the bottom of the pail or bottle. Bio-Mos® has been added at research levels and has been shown to improve calf health and growth by binding pathogenic bacteria that are a major cause of scours. Chelated (organic) trace minerals are used instead of traditional inorganic trace minerals because of the improved efficiency of the calf to utilize these resulting in better health and growth. Adding Accelerated Genetics’ direct-fed microbial, Tri-Mic WD, has been shown to improve feed intakes, feed utilization, digestive health and immune system response. Bovatec® (Iasalocid) is an available option for those looking for control of coccidiosis caused by Eimeria bovis and Eimeria zuemii.

Heifer calves are the future of the milking herd. Evidence is accumulating that indicates growth rate and health during the first 8 weeks of a calf’s life can impact lactation performance as a cow. In order to evaluate the success of a calf program, calf raisers need to know where they stand in terms of calf growth rate and health, and compare those values against industry standards (i.e., benchmarks). Growth: A general goal for calf growth, regardless of breed, should be to double the calf’s birthweight by 60 days of age. For a 90-lb. calf, this means that the calf should gain 1.5 lbs./day in order to reach 180 lbs. by 60 days of age. Several factors influence calf growth, including breed, colostrum status, environmental pathogen load, type of calf housing, liquid feed source and feeding program, calf starter management, and weaning age. All these factors are interrelated, such that inadequacies in any area can influence the outcome of another. A conventional milk replacer program (20-20 or 22-20) can meet the goal of doubling birthweight by 60 days provided the other factors mentioned do not inhibit calf growth. Health: Recent USDA data indicates that 7.8% of the heifer calves born and alive at 48 hours of age die prior to weaning, with the majority of deaths due to: 1) scours, diarrhea, or other digestive problems (56.5%), or 2) respiratory problems (22.5%). Less than 5% mortality from 48 hours of age until weaning is the recommended benchmark, but every calf raiser’s goal should be to keep driving this number lower. Clearly, calf death loss is the least desirable outcome, but high incidence of calfhood diseases can significantly influence long-term productivity and profitability. Less than 25% of calves should be treated for disease prior to weaning. Death loss or treatment rates exceeding these benchmarks call for an investigation (in conjunction with your veterinarian, nutritionist, and/or calf specialist) to determine the source of infection and identify corrective actions.

CALF MANAGEMENT ACT Calf Accelerator Calf Starter is based on expert-reviewed, controlled research, proven repeatedly to improve calf performance, efficiency, and economics of production. Calf Accelerator is high in starch and low in fiber to promote consumption, rapid rumen development, and rate of gain (J. Dairy Sci, 2008). The energy ingredients are only corn and oats, not fibrous by-products. A blend of short chain fatty acids, medium chain fatty acids, and essential fatty acids repeatedly shown to improve calf performance are included in Calf Accelerator. The mode of action of these fatty acids is increased development of the intestinal mucosa and pancreas, antimicrobial properties of the fatty acids, and supply of essential fatty acids that are deficient in the diet. Several controlled trials with these nutrients have been published and summarized with these fatty acid blends known as Neotec4®. In the trials with calves less than 2 months of age, an all-milk protein milk replacer was fed. In both starter and grower trials (Table 1), calves fed Neotec4® had greater average daily gains, feed efficiency, and changes in hip widths with no change in starter intake or body condition scores (BCS). Additionally, a blend of various botanical products, Apex, is included in Calf Accelerator. Apex has been shown to improve calf body weight gain, starter intake, feed efficiency, and hip width change in calves under 2 months old fed a soy-based milk replacer (Table 2). CALF MANAGEMENT

COLD WEATHER CARE The Thermal-Neutral Zone (TNZ) is a temperature range where animals are neither too hot or too cold. The range for calves is from a low of about 50°F to a high of 78°F. (10-25°C) When the temperature drops below 50°F calves will start to use more energy to maintain their body temperature. During these cold weather times, extra energy and/or outerwear is necessary to keep your calf’s growth on track. In cold weather, energy can be a limiting factor to growth, leaving calves susceptible to sickness. Feeding a high quality milk replacer to pre-weaned calves makes economic sense and helps prevent weight loss in cold weather environments. The chart at right estimates daily gain expected at feeding rates and temperatures when feeding Accelerated Genetics milk replacer.

The digestive system of cattle is populated with a wide array of microorganism, each playing a specific role that affects animal health and performance. These populations of beneficial microbes can be adversely affected by stress factors – such as calving, feed changes, production challenges, movement, disease and illnesses. Feeding Accelerated Genetics’ exclusive line of Direct-Fed-Microbials (DFM’s) is one step towards assuring optimum animal performance and health. Our DFM’s are made from a combination of live, viable microorganisms – each selected for their role in cattle. These microbes are packaged using state-of-the-art technology to guarantee viability and the highest activity once fed to the animal. With 20 years experience, Accelerated Genetics is recognized as a leader in the field of DFM’s.

DIRECT-FED MICROBIALS (DFM)

Tri-MicWD 30497 500 gr. 30507 5 kg A water dispersible direct-fed microbial (DFM) specifically designed for calves. Promotes the early establishment of beneficial digestive bacteria necessary for proper digestion of milk and grain diets. Aids in rumen development when transitioning to a dry feed diet. Reduces the occurrence and severity of scours. Helps re-establish digestive bacteria following antibiotic treatment, illness or environmental stress. Can be mixed into water, milk replacer, whole milk or rehydration products. Should be fed from birth through weaning.

CALF MANAGEMENT Bloating in Calves The following risk factors for bloat in dairy calves are a summary of several field observations. Adapted from: http://www.nwnyteam.org/AgFocus2007/Oct/ BloatCalves.htm and http//www.dairyherd.com/adviser/ cha_070625.htm. Colostrum collection, quality, and storage • Every effort should be made to provide clean quality colostrum (4 L as soon as possible after birth) to the calf in order to prevent bloat-causing bacteria from establishing in the calf’s digestive tract. Cleanliness of feeding equipment and calf hutches/pens • Pathogens that cause bloat are abundant in the environment, therefore cleaning and disinfecting feeding equipment between feedings and calf pens/hutches between calves is a very important practice. Consistency of milk replacer from feeding to feeding may be a factor (intervals, concentration of powder to water) • Consistency is very important. This refers to maintaining a consistent feeding schedule and consistent mixing protocols (ratio of powder to water). Inadequate milk or milk replacer temperature • Feeding milk or milk replacer at 95ºF or below may induce bloat. Feeding temperature should be closer to 101ºF-102ºF–the body temperature of a healthy calf. • Higher risk in the winter, which may be related to rapid cooling of milk replacer solution, resulting in milk temperature being significantly cooler than intended. More common with higher feeding rates • Be careful when introducing high feeding rates, perhaps use a conservative step-up approach. • High feeding rates have been successfully implemented on several farms. May be more common in higher protein milk replacer use • This observation is likely due to greater nutrient intake providing more substrate to organisms that lead to bloat. Lactose levels do not appear to be a problem Fast milk flow-rate through the nipple hole • Don’t cut calf bottle nipples to increase the diameter of the hole. Replace nipples regularly to maintain proper hole diameter.

Tri-Start Jr. 30386 Bolus

36 ct.

A direct-fed microbial (DFM) for dairy and beef calves in bolus form. Helps stimulate feed intake during periods of change. Contains optimal levels of beneficial microbes necessary to jump-start a calf’s stalled digestive system. Administer when calf is three days old to help make the transition from colostrum to whole milk or milk replacer. Also administer during any management-induced stress such as dehorning, shipping or moving, weaning, vaccinations and antibiotic treatment.

“Dunker” calves • These calves submerge their muzzles into the bucket and drink aggressively. Use a floating nipple or toy rubber duck to train these calves to drink slower. Higher incidence without free choice water or quickly freezing free choice water • Water is the most important nutrient! Usually occurs between 7-21 days of age, but has been seen in older calves Farms have noted increasing temperature of water used for mixing replacer by several degrees only (108ºF-114ºF as an example) was coincidental with start of problems • These temperatures should not be a problem if a high quality milk replacer is fed. Farms increasing liquid feeding rates in the cold weather on a 2X basis could avoid the problem by feeding 3X

NUTRITION KEY POINTS ON HEAT STRESS Heat stress can be one of the most costly events on the farm during the summer. Here are a few key points to remember: • Only 10 to 20 percent of inseminations result in pregnancies when cows are under heat stress.

Catching fresh cow problems early and taking appropriate action can help minimize dramatic economic losses and prevent further problems later in lactation. The management of a fresh cow program can be complimented with the use of specialized nutritional supplements which are designed to counter the stress and challenges of calving. Accelerated Genetics’ Fresh Cow Care products are formulated to meet the challenges high-production dairy cows experience during calving.

ELECTROLYTE Bovine Accellyte II 30487 25 lbs.

• Increasing nutrient density of rations can help the cow meet her needs on less feed. • A direct-fed microbial can also aide in increasing feed intake.

Table 1. Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) Impact on Dairy Cattle THI

Symptoms

72

Cattle start to feel heat stress. Reduced feed intake and increased respiration rate may occur.

77

Begin losing milk production. Symptoms become more apparent.

80

Rapid shallow breathing, profuse sweating and a 10% decrease in milk production.

90

Severe loss in milk yield (>25%), decreased feed intake, and panting. Risk of death if ill or calving.

• Lower intakes and a higher concentrated diet will also increase the need for buffer in the ration.

Mild Stress

Medium Stress

There are ways to lessen the impact of heat stress on cattle. Ways you can minimize the effect include:

• Heat stress depresses feed intake, so it is important to adjust the ration to meet the same requirements.

°F

• Temperature levels that may be comfortable to people can be stressful on high producing cattle. Ideal temperatures for a dairy cow are between 41˚ and 77˚ F.

• At least one water source is needed for every twenty cows at all times. Keeping the water clean and fresh is also important. Cattle will drink more water when a cool clean source of water is available.

A unique electrolyte designed to combat the losses due to dehydration. Can be used for both pre-hydrating (prior to stress) and re-hydrating (post stress) cattle. Contains electrolytes to replace those lost during stress, energy to provide an added boost when needed most, minerals needed to compensate for deficiencies from reduced feed intakes and vitamins necessary for life. Can be used as a drench, added to stock tanks or individual water feedings. It also can be dry-mixed into feeds for group or herd application during periods of stress such as calving, vaccinations, feed changes, temperature extremes and illness.

• The effect of heat stress on cows can also affect milk quality. Heat stress can depress the cow’s immune system and high heat and humidity is a great environment for bacteria.

Severe Stress

• Ventilation must be designed to exchange the warm air around the cows with cooler air from outside the barn. A sprinkler system can also reduce heat stress if set up correctly. At the end of the day, the key goal is to help the cow maintain production and stay healthy throughout the year. Controlling body temperature with adequate facilities, maintaining dry matter intake, and meeting nutritional requirements regardless of intake, will all help keep cows productive and healthy.

NUTRITION Trace Minerals: An Expensive Way to Cut Expenses in Dairy Cows During difficult economic times, it is tempting to cut expenses in areas that have dramatic impact on profits in the long run. The role of minerals tends to be underestimated but minerals are required for growth, muscle and nerve function, immune system and reproduction. Here are some key points in the importance of vitamins and minerals in dairy cattle:

ACCELERATED NUTRITION Two major components of a dairy cow’s diet are vitamins and mineral fortification. These components may not make up a significant portion of the dry-matter intake, but nonetheless they play a major role in immune system function, reproduction and for optimum milk production. Since most essential vitamins and minerals are insufficient in the forage and commodity portion of the diet and cannot be synthesized by the animal, these must be supplemented in the ration. Accelerated Genetics’ line of high-quality vitamin and mineral supplements and premixes are formulated to compliment any forage and commodity base diet.

• Specific requirements depend on age, size, status (pregnancy, milk production, growing).

Accelerated Heat 30149 30 lbs.

• Subclinical or marginal deficiencies may be a larger problem than an acute deficiency because specific signs of deficiency are not evident, however, the animal continues to grow, produce and reproduce at a reduced rate.

Designed to enhance reproductive performance in dairy and beef cattle including embryo transfer donors and recipients. Contains 100% chelated trace minerals for increased bioavailability, high levels of Beta carotene and Vitamins A, B12, D, E, and K. Crumble form makes it ideal for top dress feeding.

• For trace minerals, as their status declines in the body, immune and enzyme functions are compromised first, followed by growth, and fertility, before evidence of clinical deficiency. • In general, trace minerals identified as important for immune function and disease resistance include zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and Selenium (Se). • Soils in some areas of the U.S. are deficient in Se. Therefore, crops grown on these soils also are low in Se. Selenium deficiency in dry cows has been reported to cause retained placenta, abortions, poor fertility, and high incidence of metritis, a higher level of general infection.

Accel Fortifier 1:50 30206 25 lbs. A concentrated source of chelated and inorganic trace minerals with vitamins intended to be mixed into premixes, minerals, supplements and total mixed rations. Can be added to diets for dairy and beef cattle (including dry cows and bred heifers) during periods when added nutrients are required such as: calving, peak production, breeding, or during environmental challenges.

• Studies imply that it is important to have animals in adequate mineral balance prior to and over-lapping periods of greatest risk of stress. • Reproductive performance of cattle may be compromised if Zn, Cu, or Mn status is in the marginal to deficient range. • Trace minerals are more effective when bound to organic sources (amino acids) due to better absorption. Trace minerals are critical for body function and fertility. Mineral deficiency affects animal performance shortly after mineral deprivation, but it may take several months before showing clinical signs. Cutting minerals in a cow’s diet it is actually setting a timer for production and reproduction disaster.

Dairy Performulator V-TM Plus 30121 50 lbs. A high quality micro-trace mineral and vitamin mix designed for adding to macro-minerals to form a custom premix.

NUTRITION Macrominerals are important to cattle diets Having a healthy cow means making sure there are enough minerals in the diet to help the animal meet all of its needs. The bullets below show most important minerals and their role in a healthy dairy cow: Phosphorus (P): Phosphorus is commonly referred to as the “fertility” mineral. Inactive ovaries, delayed sexual maturity and low Chromium (CR) have been attributed to low P intakes. Overfeeding P levels over NRC recommendations (0.37%) do not gain anything in production or reproduction, but could increase environmental damage and increase feeding costs. Calcium (Ca): Cattle need Ca for skeletal growth and milk production. From mid to late pregnancy, a bred cow’s requirement for Ca increases by 22 per cent and after calving by an additional 40 per cent. A deficiency can lead to milk fever around the time of calving particularly in high milk producing breeds. A greater incidence of calving difficulty, retained placenta and prolapsed uterus may also occur. Potassium (K): Potassium functions in pH balance, osmotic pressure and the amount of water retained in the body. High levels of K may inhibit Magnesium (Mg) absorption and cause metabolic problems, especially in grazing systems. Other studies also report lower fertility in cows fed high levels of K or diets in which the K-Na ratio was too wide. Sodium (Na) and Chloride (Cl): Sodium and chloride, are critical in the electrolyte balance. In addition, Na affects the absorption of sugar and proteins from the digestive tract. Salt (NaCl) deficiencies can affect the efficiency of digestion and indirectly the reproduction performance of cows.

that prevents the tractors from colliding. In addition, keep people from walking around the bunker, trench or pile during filling and packing, as the equipment operators may not be aware of them and they could get run over. Cover Silage with Care When you cover the bunker, trench or pile, it’s easy to slip on the plastic and tumble off the edge of the bunker – especially during wet weather. To prevent this, face the walls of the bunker. Then, work your way from the edge toward the center of the bunker as you cover the silage. Furthermore, use an unloader bucket to carry tires up the slope of the silage instead of tossing them over the wall onto the silage. Avert Avalanches

AccelEnsile forage inoculants contain multiple strains of acid-producing bacteria, which act as an aid in the fermentation process of forages. Our patented process of stabilization and packaging insures that all AccelEnsile inoculants contain live and viable bacteria specifically selected for the crop being ensiled.

Do your employees or family members refuse to remove silage from an overfilled bunker or silage pile? If so, they have good reason if the silage pile is at an unsafe height. In fact, those employees had good reason to avoid a feedout face that could easily ‘avalanche’ and bury them beneath tons of silage. Following are some ways to avoid a silage avalanche:

AccelMX600

Don’t undercut. Undercutting occurs when you dig the unloader bucket into the bottom of the silage instead of shaving it down the face of the bunker – a situation that is quite common when the unloader bucket can’t reach the top of an overfilled bunker or pile. Undercutting creates an overhang of silage that can quickly loosen and tumble to the floor of the bunker.

SAFETY AROUND SILAGE

Take Precautions During Silage Packing

Many producers, employees and family members become complacent with regards toward safety when working with silage in bunkers, trenches and drive-over piles.

Tractor rollover is one of the main concerns during silage packing. To prevent a tractor turnover, or to protect yourself if one occurs, here are some guidelines:

Follow these precautionary measures during packing and feed removal to protect your family, employees and yourself around silage:

Don’t Overfill Silage To prevent accidents, don’t pile forage any higher than what your unloading equipment can safely reach. Typically, an unloader can reach a height of 12 to 16 feet. Thus, if the walls of your bunker stand 16 feet high, don’t try to pack 40 feet of forage into the structure. If you have excess forage to store, consider using plastic silage bags or several small, covered silage piles to store the excess forage.

• • • • •

• • • •

Always use a packing tractor that has a rollover protective structure (ROPS). Wear your seatbelt at all times. Allow only experienced operators to drive the packing tractor. Set the tractor’s wheels as wide apart as possible, or use dual wheels to increase the tractor’s stability. Use a four-wheel drive or front-wheel assist tractor for better control. Pack the forage at a maximum slope of 3:1 – pack 3 feet of silage horizontally for each foot that you pack vertically – to prevent the slope from becoming too steep. When packing on steep slopes, back the tractor up the slope of the forage instead of driving forward up the slope or parallel with the slope. During packing, slope the forage away from the walls. In a trench silo, pack forage evenly in both directions so that you can drive off the wall onto the ground. When two tractors pack one bunker, establish a driving procedure (Continued on side column)

Use these additional precautions when you feedout silage from a bunker, trench or silage pile: • • •

Use caution when removing the tires and plastic prior to feedout, especially during wet conditions that can cause the plastic to become slippery. Don’t stand on top of a silage overhang. Your weight can cause it to collapse. To prevent a rollover, don’t carry silage in an elevated bucket. Instead, push silage in front of the unloader blade or bucket.

Stay away from the face. The face of a bunker silo should not be a gathering place for tours of your dairy or a place where your nutritionist takes a feed sample. To discourage these situations, fence off the area and post a sign which reads ‘Danger: Do Not Enter! Authorized Personnel Only’ at the entrance of the bunker, trench or silage pile. If you need to take a feed sample, take it from the unloader bucket after the silage is removed from the face of the bunker or pile. Use these precautions to prevent injury or death when working with silage in bunkers, trenches or drive-over silage piles.

ESSENTIAL SOLUTIONS

O

ne of the single biggest factors in having a healthy productive herd is to have a balanced ration not only for the cows, but for the millions of fungi, bacteria, and yeast that are living inside the cow. To maintain an efficient and healthy animal each type of microbe has to be present at the proper ratio in order for itself to survive and give the animal the nutrients it needs. Any variation, such as a pH change caused by overfeeding grain or a mycotoxin from poorly stored feed, can destroy specific microbes and throw the balance off which causes problems both in the short term (production) and long term (reproduction). Accelerated Genetics has years of experience with DFM’s with our Tri-Mic line of products and have used that knowledge and experience when we designed our latest DFM. Essential Solutions DFM is a combination of ruminant specific microorganisms that promote proper rumen micro flora function and growth for a more stable and effective digestive tract. Use of DFMs in a cow’s diet are very effective. With an improved rumen environment it can lead to higher production, allow for better feed efficiency, and reduce the risk of pathogenic microbes becoming established in the digestive system. Together this improves overall animal health. In addition, stable digestive tracts are better equipped to absorb required nutrients needed for crucial biological functions such as reproduction. Sometimes it is difficult, if not impossible, to maintain the correct balance of rumen microbes through diet alone. When this happens, there are many products or tools out there that can help achieve the desired balance. Traditionally, this balance has been achieved by fighting the microbes that we don’t want. Ionophores such as monensin,

are used to give preferential treatment to specific rumen microbes by suppressing growth of less desired rumen microbes. Antibiotics are used in a similar way, but they fight foreign microbes that invade the digestive tract, but they can also attack the beneficial microbes at the same time. DFM’s, on the other hand, act to improve rumen function by adding beneficial bacteria to the rumen to outcompete less desirable microbes. By doing this, it allows the rumen’s own defense system to balance itself to improve efficiency. There are many advantages to the Essential Solutions Direct Fed Microbial product. They include product stability, dry formulation, special packaging ensuring the product stability for months, guaranteed viable microbe count and it is USDA certified organic. Further, the on-farm product trial showed improved production when Essential Solutions DFM was fed. Essential Solutions DFM is easy to use as it can either be used as a top-dress once a day or added into a TMR ration.

ESSENTIAL SOLUTIONS ESSENTIAL SOLUTIONS ORGANIC CERTIFICATION The term “certified organic” has been applied to many livestock feeds and supplements but exactly what does this mean and what assurances do the farmers have that these products are indeed approved for use on their organic farms? “Certified organic" means that a nonprofit, state or private certification organization, accredited by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), has verified that a product labeled as "organic" meets the strictly defined organic standards. Certification is important for consumers, the industry and the regulatory community in order to assure organic integrity from farm to retail shelf. Accelerated Genetics’ Essential Solutions line of organic feed supplements has been reviewed and approved for organic use by Midwest Organic Services Association (MOSA). As a USDA-accredited certifier, MOSA strictly follows the USDA National Organic Program guidelines to ensure all USDA requirements are met. As part of their USDA accreditation, MOSA updates programs and policies as needed to ensure ongoing compliance with National Organic Program guidelines. The USDA Organic Seal and the MOSA Seal, which both appear on all Essential Solutions products, signify that these products have been verified as certified organic in compliance with the strict USDA federal regulations for organic. When feeding Essential Solutions products you can be assured that not only are these products formulated for optimum livestock performance but also that these are truly “organic certified”.

The first key to having a successful mastitis control practice is to have good milking procedures and to maintain as clean of a living environment as possible. Keeping a consistent and high level of management in both areas at all times is the only way to ensure that mastitis cases are kept to a minimum in the herd. The second key to a successful program is to constantly monitor the herd’s milk quality status. Monitoring herd bulk tank somatic cell counts on a daily basis and occasional monitoring of individual somatic cell counts (DHI testing) is the minimal amount of monitoring any herd should be doing at any time. The next step is to take a bacterial milk culture of the bulk tank on a routine basis. This will help identify the type of organisms that were present in your herd the day of the test and will help determine what areas of management need improvement. Intensively managed farms use the California Mastitis Test (CMT) or individual cow milk cultures to determine treatment strategies on a case by case basis.

32 oz.

An alcohol-based teat protection dip that sanitizes and seals the teat canal for 3-7 days. Excellent for use during drying-off and precalving periods when the potential for mastitis infections are at their highest. Apply at dry-off following dry-cow treatment. If environmental conditions warrant, apply again 7 to 10 days prior to calving.

30132

Mastitis is an infection caused by microorganisms that invade the mammary gland and damage the tissue that produce the milk. When this happens the body’s immune system reacts and sends white blood cells, which are a major component of the somatic cell count in the milk, to fight off the infection. Visible signs of mastitis include a swollen udder and abnormal milk, but many cases of mastitis show no visible signs and can only be detected by testing for a high somatic cell count.

The final key to a good mastitis management program is treatment. In the past, most cases of mastitis have been treated with antibiotics, but we now know that antibiotics are ineffective against many different types of infections. For contagious mastitis Strep ag can be cured relatively easy with antibiotics, Staph aureus is much harder to control. Currently, there is no effective treatment for mycoplasma. Most environmental mastitis, while effectively treated with antibiotics, may be prevented by maintaining cow cleanliness and an up-to-date vaccination program. In any case, when a problem is identified it is important to go back to the first key and review the farm prevention program.

BEDDING CONDITIONER

SOP® PRODUCTS

SOP® products function due to the innovative Sirio Operating Process® technology. Sirio Operating Process® treatment involves the transfer of specific bio-frequencies onto a “carrier.” These frequencies, in turn, are transferred to the environment in which the carrier material is distributed, whereby they inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria. Eventually these changes to the bacterial load in the environment can have a significant impact on animal health, comfort and well-being.

SOP® C COW 30368 2 kgs. (4.4 lbs.) For use in free stalls, bedding packs and compost barns. One bag for 200 cow treatments. Treat once a week (twice a week treatment in maternity pen or double application once a week).

SOP® products are made up of purely natural substances and do not contain bacteria, enzymes or disinfectants. They are not medications (and should not be intended as such) and they do not substitute, in any way, any veterinary interventions.

Benefits: • Reduces the number and severity of new cases of environmental mastitis with a consequent reduction in the somatic cell count. • Reduces moisture in the bedding pack which keeps the udders cleaner. • Reduces amount of bedding required. • Reduces ammonia related stress in the cows. • Reduces flies.

BREEDING SUPPLIES It takes the right tools to achieve a successful breeding program. Accelerated Genetics is your source for quality breeding supplies and professional services. From time management and estrus synchronization programs, to reliable and safe storage options, to the highest quality technician-tested supplies – Accelerated Genetics has it all.

There are a wide variety of products available for use as soaps, sanitizers, and disinfectants. All commercially available products have been tested to some degree and any claims of “antibacterial, sporacidal, virucidal, or fungicidal activity” must be demonstrated to some degree before marketing the product. It is important to evaluate any products selected for use in the dairy for performance under “on-farm” conditions and to also consider economy, safety, efficacy, the spectrum of activity against a wide variety of microorganisms, and any environmental concerns with use on and around livestock and humans. Nolvalube® is an obstetrical lubricant containing Nolvasan® disinfectant (0.1% chlorhexidine acetate). It is supplied ready-to-use as a non-greasy, and non-irritating formulation. It will not injure rubber appliances or surgical instruments, retains its efficacy in the presence of organic matter such as manure, urine, dirt, blood, serum, and body oils, has a proven ability to bind to skin proteins and retain residual activity for as long as 48 hours following application. Nolvalube® is safe for all obstetrical applications.

ESTRUS SYNCHRONIZATION SUPPLIES Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® Cattle Insert 30586 Insert 30587 Insertion Gun The Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® Insert is another valuable management tool for estrus synchronization for dairy and beef heifers and cows. The Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® Cattle Insert, first developed in New Zealand, dramatically improves reproductive success by allowing producers to breed more cattle in less time. Used in breeding programs with Lutalyse® Sterile Solution, the Eazi-Breed™ CIDR® Insert helps control the estrus cycle, producing tighter estrus synchronization and induced cyclicity in some anestrus animals.

In a recent study, “Using Controlled Internal Drug Release (CIDR) Inserts for Estrus Synchronization in Dairy Heifers”; A.K. McLean, W.M. Graves, R.C. Smith, B.C. Lance, and L.E. McKee of the University of Georgia, Athens evaluated timed insemination protocols in dairy heifers.

Novalube® (For CIDR insertions) 30584 8 lbs. Ready to use, antiseptic lubricant containing Nolvasan® for topical or intrauterine application. Nonspermicidal, non-greasy, free from irritating effects. Will not damage rubber appliances or surgical equipment. Contains 0.1% chlorhexidine acetate. Research has shown reproductive benefit when used with CIDR insertions.

The 164 dairy heifers taking part in the reproduction experiment with CIDRs were evaluated for the effect of lubricants on vaginal discharge and pregnancy rate.

Lubricants were applied to the CIDR insertion device when inserting CIDR into animals.

CIDR insertion devices were dipped in a properly diluted Nolvasan® solution (1 oz./gallon), excess fluid was shaken off, and the devices were wiped with a single use towel between heifers in the Safe Lube treatment group.

CIDR insertion devices were wiped only and more Nolvalube® was added between heifers in the Nolvalube® treatment group.

Lubricants were randomized between animals such that Safe Lube used with 81 heifers and Nolvalube® was used with 83 heifers.

Summary of Pregnancy Results: Percent of Total Animals Diagnosed Pregnant Safe Lube = 35.8%* Nolvalube® = 48.2%* P>0.05<0.1 Percent of Bred Animals Diagnosed Pregnant Safe Lube = 43.9% Nolvalube® = 52.6%

The authors report, “Nolvalube® was much faster for inserting CIDRs, with the same cost, less discharge, and more heifers bred.” An increase of 8.7% in pregnancy rate was obtained in heifers whose CIDR insertion devices were lubricated with Nolvalube® as compared to heifers whose CIDR insertion devices were lubricated with a non-disinfectant lubricant.

BREEDING SUPPLIES

Accelerated Genetics offers a complete line of dewars (liquid tanks) and vapor-shippers (dry shippers) to meet the storage and shipping needs of any breeder. We are proud to offer only the highest quality tanks from the world’s leading manufacturers.

IS IT TIME FOR A NEW SEMEN TANK? Take this short quiz to see if you need to replace your semen tank: •

Is the time between fills becoming shorter?

Do you notice an increase in liquid nitrogen use?

Is condensation or frost noticeable on the outside of the tank?

Is your current tank more than 8 years old?

If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions, it is time to replace your semen tank. Don’t leave the safety of your genetic investment to chance. Monitor nitrogen levels between fills, replace worn or damaged neck corks, store your tank in a dry, safe and secure area, check the tank regularly for signs of vacuum failure and if transporting your tank make sure it is properly labeled, secured in the vehicle and resting on a mat or other material to absorb shocks.

HEAT DETECTION AIDS KAMAR® Heatmount® Detectors 30343 25 ct. 30921 50 ct. 30920 100 ct. 30344 KAMAR® Heatmount® Adhesive

BREEDING SUPPLIES

KAMAR® Heatmount® Detectors are a valuable heat detection aid that assist in identifying cows ready for artificial breeding. The detectors are a pressure sensitive device with a built-in timing mechanism designed to be activated by standing heat behavior. Glued onto the sacrum (tail head), pressure from the brisket of a mounting animal requires approximately 3 seconds to turn the detector from white to red. This timing mechanism helps distinguish between true standing heat versus false mounting activity. Standing heat behavior in the bovine is the most reliable sign that a cow is ready to be bred. Estrotect® Heat Detector 30919 Red/Orange 30905 Blue 30906 Green 30918 Pink The Estrotect® heat detection system is an excellent aid to the herdsman’s visual observation program for detecting cows in standing heat. Apply Estrotect® heat detectors to your cows prior to standing heat or when your cows are given injections to synchronize their estrus cycles. The detectors have a silver scratch-off surface. The bright signal layer underneath, in red/orange, blue, green or pink, will begin to show after the first mount. Additional mountings result in increasing color exposure. You know exactly what’s happening with no false readings. Your cows are bred at the ideal time resulting in more pregnancies greatly improving your bottom line.
